One small worrying issue I have with Dawntrail (Ending Spoilers)

Dawntrail was advertised everywhere as the 'story reset' expansion, something on the level of ARR that would "provide the foundation for another 10 years of story". That's all well and good, but after going through the Dawntrail MSQ, I find that it's lacking pretty much any of the keystones needed for such a foundation.

In ARR, we were introduced to the following story beats that weren't resolved during the course of it's MSQ:

• The Ascians. They would go on to be the main antagonists of the entire ARR arc, and we'd see them in pretty much every expansion.
• The Garlean Empire. Another, more tangible and political antagonist that filled in when it wouldn't make sense for there to be Ascians everywhere.
• Hydaelyn and Zodiark. The dicotomy of the two pretty much defined all of our actions from 2.0 all the way up to the end of Endwalker.
• Ishgard. While we couldn't access the city itself or anything north, they were present in conversations and the story, and we could tell they would have more to do in the story in the future.
• Ala Mhigo. Same deal as Ishgard, probably even moreso because the presence of the Ala Mhigan refugees were probably responsible for more than half of the political strife stories seen in ARR.
• The Allagans. Their past actions are pretty much entirely responsible for the events of ARR-forward, and we deal with them until the end of Endwalker as a result.

Seems like a good foundation.

In DT, we were introduced to the following story beats that weren't resolved during the course of it's MSQ:

• Another reflection, potentially already rejoined (jury still out, although wasn't it heavily implied that the Source's Calamity of Lightning happened because of what happened in Alexandria?), that we summarily dealt with, cut off from the Source, and likely won't be seeing again soon.
• The "ramifications of interdimensional fusion."
• Another Azem macguffin.

...and that's about it.

This doesn't seem like a fantastic foundation for another 10 years of story. It just feels like 'another expansion'.

This doesn't have to be a problem, but I foresee it being one. Not because I have any doubts that Square Enix will be able to pull another story out of their corporate cheeks, but because this is the same pitfall that caused me to abandon WoW for FFXIV in the first place.

3000 character limit lulz

In WoW, a main problem people had was the lack of a cohesive story. After a certain point (I think, maybe Cataclysm?), when one expansion ended, it was pretty much entirely bookended. You'd count yourself lucky to see a reference to past expansions in future ones unless they A. had their roots in the old Warcraft games (see: Lich King), or B. had new races or classes, which meant that they had to be included for the sake of the players playing them. There are some exceptions, such as Gul'dan from Warlords of Draenor being the catalyst for the events of Legion, but otherwise it's exceptionally slim, and it not only made it difficult to immerse yourself in the world, but also made the new player experience horribly fragmented.

FFXIV's long, continuous MSQ made this a non-issue in the past, although I started getting those same question marks hovering above my head in 6.5. The entire post-MSQ was a side story almost completely unrelated to the events that came before it, and then found out in 7.0, also completely unrelated to the events that came after. This is a first for the MSQ as far as I can tell (memory somewhat hazy, although skimming the patch cycles seems to confirm this).

So, is this what we're doing now? Because the Hydaelyn saga is over, we're just going to do the same thing as WoW and fragment the expansion stories to be entirely self-contained?

Before, we could somewhat tell what would come next. Even before 2.1, there were so many established story beats to explore that it was almost certain that there would be more to come exploring them. We get an Ascian story with HW, then a Garlean story with SB, then another Ascian story with ShB, and finally the end of the whole saga. It made sense.

Now... I have honestly no idea where they could go from here. Tural's problems seem solved, and other than the weird cyberpunk city that appeared on Tuliyollal's doorstep, there don't seem to be any threads we can follow. Well, there's also the key/chalice/Azem macguffin that everyone decided it was okay for me to hold onto, but as far as I can tell from the story, it's just 'thing that will help us go to some isolated locale for an adventure and then come home'. The only other people who knew of its existence are now either dead or couldn't care less.

Things seem dim for the progression of FFXIV's story, and with all the complaints most everyone has had with DT's MSQ, it doesn't give me faith that things will improve.

well with how things go next expansion is the void as it was set up during post EW. like with the first being set up with post HW.

i will say i feel there is a ton of ways to go with the story the biggest is we will continue our adventure to follow in azems footsteps while doing whatever good we can do. we now have 2 full worlds to choose from not counting more of the source they could choose to explore too. not only that we now have a unstable but possible way to unsunder the world that if looked into and explored can be done without the death of every being ever. we also can look into the creator of this relic that seems to be even more advanced than the ancients.

When YoshiP said something to the affect of them going in a new direction and that, if we like it, then it may lead into the direction of future expansion? I think we all assumed that the direction will be built on the 7.0 story, but not last more than 1 or 2 expansions even then. The more I think of this expansion, the more I think maybe he did mean the WoW style of expansion stories. I know he does still look at WoW (as any MMO dev should), but I don't know if he fully understands why many of us were disappointed with the expansions.

It was not just "Torghast" and it was a mixture of issues. For many of us the "bookended" stories were also a factor. The stories were not always congruent with lore and some characters just seemed to age or act as needed for that expansion's plot. For players that care about lore, it reduces their investment in the game.

I'm pretty sure that Doma and Zodiark were the only new elements that ARR added over 1.0. Plus nothing stops them from taking 1 existing element and extrapolating it, the few that were added actually have bigger consequences than any older one.

I agree, I dont think 7.0 established anything that should be built upon, it felt like a standalone story, the writers could just ignore it and write another xPac with 0 connections to 7.0, damn, I hope they do that.

A.) I feel like several of the "different" stories alluded to in the original post could just as easily be combined. The Ascians, the Garleans, Ala Mhigo, and Hydaelyn/Zodiark are all just different facets of the same proverbial coin. In other words, it sounds like individual stories are being separated when considering ARR but conflated when considering DT and then concluding there's more in the former.

B.) Remember that the end of EW featured Emet-Selch teasing multiple different future stories, and we've only seen a little bit of that. In addition to the new plotlines to expand on from DT itself, there's also several remaining "loose ends" of EW still to go.

I think they'd do well to not try for another 10 year long epoch of five expansions.
A sweet spot might be three. We've got the preliminary setup, then we can have rising action and stakes, with a cohesive conclusion.
Though I don't share this criticism, a lot of people found Endwalker's story cluttered and unfocused. So it might benefit to wrap it up quicker next time.
Plus, they admit to not having a full idea on where the story was actually going until the early writing stages for Shadowbringers. So they planned Shadowbringers, and a bit of Endwalker together, and started on that path from Stormblood patches onward.
They've talked about how they're sort of seeing how things go with Dawntrail for now, so I think it'd be a perfect opportunity to figure out where this story is ending. Assuming that hourglass key isn't just going to be handed off to G'raha and Y'shtola to be fully reverse engineered in a fade to black, they could use that to keep going with the stories in the future.
Although, I'll be honest, having a "you can explore every shard now" McGuffin sounds downright terrible, as it makes it seem like visiting a new shard will just be as simple as waving a wand, as opposed to the very specific circumstances that brought us to the 1st and 13th. Plus, after the 2nd (I'm not calling it the unlost world, you can't make me) There's only three left that haven't been rejoined. I worry that we'll just blow through them as one zone each next expac, sort of like how the 2nd was two zones this time.

The only one we haven't seen yet is Merycidia. All the others he mentioned were Alzadaal's Legacy, Mount Rokkon, Dawntrail, Aloalo, and the Endwalker Alliance Raids. I was almost certain that we were going there for the latter half of Dawntrail. It could also give an opportunity to tie in the Azdaja story since that's seemingly where a lot of dragons live (Don't quote me on that, I can't remember where I got that from aside from some enemies in the Bahamut raids)
It's a bit disappointing that we just blasted through all of those amazing plot hooks, when they could have actually been used to set up the next massive story.

Despite my detest for the DT, we have quite a few things set up and yes it seems we will be traveling a lot outside of the Source.

While we can assume that the device is most likely Azem's, at this point we cannot be sure and I believe this will be important, we can by now assume who will want to use it asap just to get back to the first. We know it does two things:

1. It allows for travel between the shards
2. Modification by the Milala (lala) allows for interdimensional fusion

This said, neither of those seem to be core functionalities of the device (key) since most likely it was created before sundering, although if it was it seems rather small for Ascian device.

1. Either it was crafter before sundering by Azem to be used by the sundered, which to be fair would make it a macguffin and I do hope it's not the case
2. It's part of much larger device and the purpose of it was not travel between the shards, it's just a biproduct of a sundering that happened after, in which case, we may be opening something that should have remained locked.

So yea, at this point we do not have any antagonist before us...

But we do have Zodiark leftovers in other shards and clearly some civilizations in the other shards pushed the advancement well beyond what is know in the Source and may be a threat as well. At this point at least until we will have new antagonist or a specific problem on the horizon its hard to speculate, what we know is that there sure will be an attempt at opening permanent gate between Source and First, and it can lead to complications.

This is also my opinion. DT, as bad as Wuk Lamat was, had actually a solid story ground with the other shard that was lost to lightning and Azem's hourglass (I call it this now).
Did I get it right that Sphenes world was actually rejoined in the past and only the small bubble and living memory remained?

It can be used for the future because we don't know what the actual function is and one thing they did right is to make it so it can be linked to Azem without going so much into it to give them any deeper character to damage headcanons of the players.

For me personally with it's shape it seems more like a device linked to time then dimensional travel and that the later thing is more a simple form of it's use.

I don't want them to ignore DT for the future but to build on the best parts of it. Ignore Wuk Lamat and Tulliyolal and embrace the deeper lore. Let us go adventuring while maintaining the curiosity of stuff like this key. Make it less about one single character and allready perfect harmony cultures but about us exploring the world being part in the change in it.

You know now that I think about it this is probably the biggest fail of the story.
It was so badly executed that the only topic is Wuk Lamat. Even here she overshadows all. xD
In other expansions you would see lore threads about the key and the path forward but not this time.
That is for me the biggest telling of how the MSQ failed.

Nope. 1.0 opening movie. The Keeper of the Lake (Midgardsormr) crushes the Garlean airship it hits lake Silvertear, and from this we see a bunch of primals being released. What we learned from post-HW, Shadowbringers and Endwalker is that the "1.0" opening is "the first" before the light consumed it. That might be a "retcon" but we know as early as Stormblood that the "1.0 cutscene map" had to still exist because they used it for the Red Mage marketing with the 1.0 Miqo'te character from that cutscene.


1.0 had Ishgard in it (or at least you could get up to the loading tunnel.) Mostly. we actually lost all but a small part of Coretheas between 1.0 and 2.0, so HW was pretty much re-incorporating it proper. But all Corethas definitely was in it. You can see the "broken" aetheryte camp in one of the areas that is from 1.0. Just like the broken 1.0 tents just outside Mor Dohna's walls.


There is a lot of "unresolved" things about 1.0/2.0 that are still in the game
- Who founded Gridania /Gelmorra
- Who founded Ul'dah (and no the variant dungeon is just a one-off story)
- Who founded Limsa Lominsa

There were entire dungeons built in 1.0 that no longer exist because they were "outdoor" dungeons

The entire "storyline" for both Limsa Lominsa and Gridanaia if you started in those cities haven't been mentioned except in passing. "I saw a Treant eat a wolf" is a reference to starting in Gridanaia.

I would accept a story where we use the key to other worlds to visit one that is very much like the source, except the three city states of Eorzea are actually at each others throats instead. The leaders we know, do not exist.

Because that is something we never really "did ourselves", that was something that happened because of the Garleans, so what if there was a reflection where the Garleans didn't invade, there is no Dalamud, and no Midgardsormr. What would it look like.

The Battle of Silvertear Skies cinematic isn't the one with the proto-Crystarium(it was from a much earlier tech demo of what eventually became 1.0, before it was even called FF14), and the Crystarium wasn't built until after the Flood.

One small detail about the Azem hourglas I haven't seen mentioned anywhere. It seems to not only allow for dimensional travel but also for time travel. The Lalafell used it to escape from the ice calamaty on the Source to whatever shard the lightning calamaty happened on. However the calamity of ice was the fifth umbral calamity, while the calamity of lightning was the second. So the Lalafell not only crossed dimensions, but also travelled into a world that actually shouldn't exist anymore.

It isn't explained in game and Y'shtola even says that there is no way of knowing which shard it is. Personally I doubt that this is the last remnant of a rejoined world. The ascians wanted to rejoin the whole star, they wouldn't let a small bubble remain. Also the calamity of ice that made the milalafell leave the source was the 5th, whereas the calamity of lightning was the 2nd. Kind hard to imagine how they would flee to a shard that had already rejoined at that time.

Hmm I forogot about the Milalla.
Regarding the calamity order. Imo we don't know yet how exactly the time stuff between shards and source works. It could be that it gets so bad that a destroyed shard may still exist in the "past" and that's how the Milalla got there.
That would give us also quite a potential on future stories like getting to a shard while it is rejoined (would also be bad for us while being there).

At least to me everything screamed calamity of lightning there. Not explaining this (or better said no interest from the scions) is just another bad writing issue.
Or they just forgot their own oder of calamities.

Did I miss where the hourglass was associated with Azem? Because I don't remember that ever coming up. Mostly I've just been wondering why the core of it looks like a spiraled piece of white auracite.

I would like them rebuilding more military like imperials or some sort of ascians but stronger with actual deep story linked to azem

When we pull out Azem's Crystal right before The Interphos, we are shown that the key/chalice lights up with the same symbol, in the same color as the crystal. I think this is meant to imply that the key/chalice is also a creation of Azem, or at least invokes the same magic.

Honestly, I still don't see it as a connection with Azem themselves. Azem never would've needed a device to travel between reflections, because they didn't exist. (And we know Azem was sundered, because the WoL is a reincarnation of their shard on the Source, so they couldn't have just made it later or something.) The traveling could maybe just be a side effect or just a fraction of what this thing can do.
If the Milalla story is to be believed it responded to their wish to be saved with a solution. Nothing suggests this is the only thing it can do.

I might be wrong but isn't Azem's crystal also just a wish devise that manipulates dimension whoolwhirwarstuff?

One thing the story is consistent throughout is that prayer is effective. It could be something like the stuff the 12 build at the end of the ARaid

Personally, I think that chalice has the ancient (or at least Ascian desundering) next holder of the seat of Azem in it. My thought process is that after Azem went off not choosing a side in Venat vs Convocation, they started searching for a new Azem, and found one, but the world was sundered before the process could finish. Or at least it was too soon for Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus to go back to calling Azem by his previous name.
I'm mostly basing this on the fact that the chalice has a chunk of what's clearly white auracite in it. Perhaps the rest of the machinery is there to keep him from escaping, like they should be able to do with white auracite.
There's also the possibility that it's a reincarnation of Venat's soul. Maybe after being reborn in the 2nd (or whichever shard Alexandria is on). Time flows differently, so she could have been reborn immediately after being eaten by Zenos, then released back to the aetherial sea after he died. I like to believe that she manipulated the flow of the aetherial sea just a bit so her soul would sunder itself after dying. It feels like what she would have wanted.

The fact remains that we still go to another reflection which only exists because of Hydaelyn, and get an artifact with some connection to one member of the convocation. I'm not just pulling this out of nowhere.
Sequels build on the world building and story from the previous story. This shouldn't be a surprise.
I don't even want Hydaelyn to come back. I just think it would be a neat way to springboard off of the first arc to have a new character with her own new story who happens to be a reincarnation of Venat. Similar to how Ryne was her own character with her own arc despite being Minfilia's reincarnation.

I was neither being passive nor aggressive. Simple fact is, Venat's not coming back. If you're referring to the second part of my post, that was just weariness about the whole argument because, again, it's been going on for two and a half years.

If I was in charge of DT's patch story, I would have figuring out how to use the hourglass to get to other shards as a main priority. However, something everyone has forgotten to mention so far is that there is one other lose thread from 7.0. The upset Rhoneek in Shaaloani. This was important enough to warrant mentioning in the epilogue, so it's likely that will be at least 7.1, if it doesn't stretch out into 7.3. So we might not get to the hourglass until 7.4. I would expect 8.0 to be an investigation into another shard, given the remaining plot hooks. I don't think DT was actually meant to be a new ARR, I think that was just bad marketing. I think DT was just meant to be a filler arc that gave us the new MacGuffin we need for the real storyline the devs want to tell. Which will involve going to other shards. We've clearly seen in the 6.x patch quests that the devs want the story to go in the direction of visiting other shards for some reason. Emet-Selch even hinted at this when he said "some of the civilizations in the reflections will surprise you", and that section was basically the writers using Emet as a sock puppet to tell us about their future plans.

Hopefully we get a really interesting story about some advanced civilization that wants to conquer the other shards down the road. Or they might go the route of having the shards start drift back towards the source in the absence of Hydaelyn, requiring us to either evacuate the shards or prevent their rejoining somehow. The most likely at the moment does seem to be that we just go shard hopping over the next 10 years without any overarching plot; and 7.0 doesn't give me confidence that the current writing team will be able to land even that. Time will tell though. For now we have upset Rhoneek to investigate and a political disturbance to settle in 7.1.

Unfortunately for some reason Yoshi have become hesitant to drag in past side content, like with the shadowkeeper and the failed WoL from the 13th.

They also killed off the political drama which have left a massive hole in the persistent suspense for the game.

All depends on the audience reception to the new story, I believe Yoshida mentioned having a general idea of the story for the next couple expanasion, but if they feel the playerbase isnt enjoying it then they wont continue with it beyond that expansion. As far as I can tell its not so much the base Dawntrail story thats going to make or break any expected Arc but the patch story, well have to wait and see where it all goes...As fir as ties into pervious story stuff might happen more so with side content, Role quests for example all deal with older zones and we've got the next Ult dealing with Eden series.

This is actualy something I'm wondering.
I also remember him saying that they first want to look for feedback before deciding how to continue. I give them probs for taking a risk even though I hate it.

My question is. If they still haven't decided yet how to continue then what exactly do they have planed for the patch story?
If they first wanted to look for feedback (which sounds like they themselfs weren't sure how the response would be) then it would be stupid to continue that story into 7.1 and 7.2 (I guess those are the ones they have already written).
On the other hand they also can not wait before deciding how to go forward.
Wouldn't the safest bet be doing something like the void questline for two patches to have a buffer?

I don't know if I will play patch stories that also have Wuk Lamat as the main character. My WoL being invisible was not the reason why I played this game. They can keep her and even make her appear from time to time but I don't want another story revolving around her 100% of the time.
If that is the future I don't know if I would continue it. I still like the other content but the MSQ and the lore is my main focus in this game tbh.

I guess they tried to look how people responded if expansions were self contained and centered around one character each time instead of us. Maybe that would work but not in this form.
