Because she 'needs' us to help her ascend the throne, despite having the almighty power of friendship.
If you're seriously considering a refund I just want to offer 2 points of info:
1. Any disputed charge that I've seen through those that have done so in game results in an automatic full account ban. No exceptions. So if you're going to dispute a charge and get money back from SE, please expect your entire account to be deleted.
2. Regarding the story, I can only speak for myself and the many comments I've read thus far (not all of them, but many many comments), as well as coming from a once toxic positivity person that defended Yoshi P against many criticisms; the story gets much, much worse if you think its bad now. In other words, if you don't like Wuk Lamat, it wont' get better. If you love Wuk Lamat and really enjoy her character as well as the pacing of the story, you'll love the rest of the expansion.
In my opinion, the story doesn’t really pick up until around the 3rd zone, which has some decent story stuff to it. Everything prior was just a slog. The lead up to the 93 trial and dungeon weren’t terrible, though. 4th zone is the best in my opinion, if only because it gave me the “new adventure” vibe I was hoping for. Everything really picks up by the time you reach the 5th zone, but there’s still a lot left to be desired in my opinion.
All that said, the second half did have more of my attention than the first half. If you have it in you to muscle through, I’d give it a shot. I will let you determine the worth, though. Reviews for DT are fairly critical at this stage, but there are still others enjoying it. Maybe you will be able to find some good in it at the end.
That's awful to hear, and I'm sorry that's been your experience so far. There are some really good groups of people to be found, but a MMO without friends is a hard game to stick with. There is a community center on the lodestone that has people recruit for their social groups, as well as lots of discord servers for XIV. I know these may be exhausting to search through, and trust me, I hear you on the tired comment - me too. I just hate to hear you've had such a bad experience so far. Different datacenters might be an option to. I play on NA and there are a number of social groups around - not just RP stuff either. Try out Aether or Crystal. I've also had lots of nice experiences on Dynamis too.
The dungeons and trials are great so I recommend at least trying those since you are sitting at the first dungeon.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it gets worse. All the fun tropes of a self insert main character come out in force and the story notices you less and less. Some people think the last areas improves but it still falls prey to CNU3s worse habits and Wuk is still hamfisted into everything.
This was also my approach. I just started to skip every scene by the end of the third zone in which the characters had to reiterate their goals and feelings, and it became a much better experience from that point onwards without missing the big plot points.
It really shows how padded DT is.
Scion: Where's Wuk Lumat?
Quest: Speak to Wuk Lamat
Quest: Speak to Wuk Lamat again.
Quest: Speak to Wuk Lamat a third time.
Quest: Find Wuk Lamat
Wuk Lamat: Friendship/Hope/Leadership/Alpacas/Food/Zoom in On fist (Use a roulette wheel to choose)
WoL: Nods in agreement to whatever the roulette wheel chose.
Repeat this for every zone.
It's not a very good story to begin with, but it lives or dies depending on how you like Wuk
If you love her you will be fine I guess. If you don't....let's just say you will see her face all the time all the way to the end
Skip the story, fast as you can. Enjoy the dungeons and trials. Quit after you do them all. Serious.
It gets worse. Honestly, skip cutscenes and watch some youtube summary. Save yourself the hell I failed to save myself from.
It's the most boring expansion I have played so far for FFXIV. It should be called Wuk Lumat Journey.
In the future, they really need to make the player have choice and that choice matter. Imagine a Dawntrail where we were presented with the claimants of the throne and each had its own separate story that the game branched from. The people who liked Wuk from the beginning could have chosen to side with her in an option at the end of 6.55 whereas players who met her and didn't see her as a candidate for such an important role could have opted to not support her and instead ended up teaming with Koana, Thancred and Urianger - or even the others whose names I forget.
They have already shown us that they are capable of making it at least seem like the player has choice, even if those choices ended up at the same end destination. During Endwalker when a Scion was knocking on the door, that had so many people going back to the Inn room to see what happened with the others. That alone was far more engaging and made something as simple as a chat seem more exciting.
There is a way to appease people in this situation. In a roleplaying game, allow the player to actually roleplay rather than being a silent mouthpiece watching the world around them. Let our choices matter, and give us choices that change the outcome of something from time to time while pushing the narrative in the direction that it was decided to go in instead of the typical "enthusiastic response" "joke response" "..."
FF14 questing has always been boring as hell, 5 expansions in and still there's nothing more than talk to bob, talk to sally at the other end of the map, talk to bob again rinse repeat.
To be honest really underwhelmed with the new maps and how on earth did they miss the story just jumps from early 91 straight to 92. Really you have to spam a dungeon twice with full xp buffs this early in the game just to progress?
So yea feel your pain. Am plodding on hoping things improve. FF14 is always strongest in it's crafting and it's endgame imo so fingers crossed. That said, loving the repeat buff they introduced with gathering :-)
How many stories are great 100% of the time? This is chapter 1 from a 60-chapter story concluded in version 14 or 15 of the game.
No, this is book 1 of a new series. How many crappy starts to a series end up in a book or movie not getting a sequel? Tons.
It's one thing to expect greatness 100% of the time, and another thing to expect a decent product from a team that has shown themselves to be able to deliver that time and time again. Dawntrail, from a writing perspective, comes off as fan fiction trash and could very easily hurt the MMO we all at one time enjoyed.
Square Enix's revenue is already way down recently. If they make another Dawntrail next expansion, or even if the post patches suck just as bad, you can bet Final Fantasy will be in trouble.
Smh you guys are so negative and it is really sad.
It gets better around 95+ in my opinion.
I really liked Wuk Lamat right up until the level 92 quest with the stealth. I took a break and played with my alt that's in Stormblood for a couple of days and came back. I'm glad I did because the level 93 quests/dungeon/trial were all quite good.
Honestly I'm more annoyed with the writers than I am Wuk Lamat, at this point.
It doesn't get any better post 95 it actually gets worse. The lack of any combat for the MSQ this time around alongside poorly written characters didn't help skip cutscene becomes the winner after the halfway mark. It was a sadly predictable and poor direction writing wise ;
Quest: Speak to Wuk Lamat
Wuk ; Speak to random villagers x 3 then another 3!
Quest: Speak to Wuk Lamat again.
Wuk: Im hungry but we should talk to 6 moar people WOL: nods like a derp
Quest: Speak to Wuk Lamat a third time.
Quest: Find Wuk Lamat
Wuk: That's it we're storming the dome to deal with Zoraal Ja WOl :NODS and fist bumps like derp lets do dis!
Inside the dome after a resistance faction advises the folks aren't real and cant be trusted
Wuk: lets eat and talk to these not real people and completely forget the reason we breached the dome in the first place WOL: Nods like a derp some more with no hint of a snide remark about Wuk forgetting the plan already .
If its new writers they need to learn fast otherwise dont think i could deal with another expansion written this horribly the character development was lacking as was the pacing and the plot armor was blatantly thick lol
The start is slow for sure but i have not found the story boring at any point.
Dawntrail has persuaded me that the concept of "Returning to a Normal Adventurer again" doesn't suit this game. The latter half of the expansion convinced me that high stakes are necessary, as low stakes result in uninspiring, shallow world-building that offers little enjoyment without constant hand-holding.
I mean low stakes would be fine if we were a part of it, but when the highlight of the "low stakes" are an NPC going off to capture a beast alone and not shown while we wait patiently over night with the quest giver, then you know you have failed as a story writter, the narrative is that we are not here except to be Wuk's Navi, we exist to bear witness to her is all, and we dont even get to say "Hey, Look, LISTEN!"
I said this in another thread too, but we didn't even return to being normal adventurer. The whole premise is that we came to be a secret weapon, the strongest person in the world, for Llama Tea, not adventure... ironically the only time we do go adventuring normally we instantly are stopped by a quest to get Llama Tea's nannys bracelet, so even when we go exploring we are still helping her, and after that there is nothing "normal" about the story.
I do agree and it's funny given the thousands of tweets on Twitter comparing the Warrior of Light in this arc to a mentor figure, calling us Wuk's Uncle Iroh. However, in reality, we provide no mentoring whatsoever. We served as Wuk's advantage in a contest we had no legitimate reason to participate in.
Your at 91 level quests and you already want some kind of climax? Ever heard of rising action? You have so much more to go through, a new story needs time to build up.
I will note here by saying that Yoshi P said this was not the definitive start to a new long term story arc. It's simply a break and they will decide where to go after this depending on player feedback. We got our literal beach episode that was promised and in my own opinion I loved it all. I liked taking a step back from the savior of so many nations and the literal universe and a few of its shards as the warrior of light/darkness. This is Wuk's story and we are along for the ride, I doubt we would even go to tural at this time if it wasent for her.
Mericidia looked like it was the most likely place to go to before wuk recruited us for her journey.
