Dawntrail- so many clenched fists

This is probably a silly thing to get hung up on in the grand scheme of things-and honestly, I don't want to pile on with more criticisms- but I haven't noticed anyone else posting about this: What was up with all the clenched fists? Every few cutscenes, I felt like we got a zoomed in closeup of someone (usually Wuk) dramatically clenching their fist. This happened throughout DT, but was particularly bad in Zone 5- Early 6.

I don't think I've ever noticed anything like this happening in FFXIV before. I have to wonder- does production sit down and watch full sections of cutscenes in a row? Like, one after the other for an entire zone? Because- this time- the repetition felt excessive.

Because it's a cliche, and the writers are amateurs who don't know how to convey emotion without it.

It's the same reason whenever something even remotely off-putting pops up Wuk Lamat has to make a silly face and go "I-I'm not scared!". Boats. Heights. Alpacas. Lava. Gets funnier every time. To them that's comedic writing. Definitely not a cliche trope of every clumsily written Mary Sue character.

as someone who plays a female highlander our fists are always clinched so i dont even notice it anymore

also clinched fists is an extremely popular anime trope, its a japanese MMO so get used to anime tropes cause this is how things are done in japan

To be fair I was also clenching my fist whenever Wuk is on screen or there is some long winded boring yap going on

This is a thing throughout the entire msq, not just DT.

In fact I wanted to make a compilation video, but I'm too lazy to watch all the cutscenes again.

Yeah it's dumb but all the freaking boob pats were FAR more irritating (for me), why did they decide to force the male emote on everyone -.-

its happened in FFXIV for.. ever.

actually, I am likely wrong but I think DT actually has LESS clenched fists than the previous expansions. either that or I just dont even notice any more.

Clearly whoever was writing had just found out about the ‘Arnold clenching fist’ meme and found it so hilarious they just had to recreate it in Dawntrail as often as humanly possible.

…that’s the only explanation I can think of.

i mean with how many times i have punched my other hand in agreement with a npc....it seems like a internal joke how long they can do something.

I'm happy to be wrong if this isn't a DT specific thing!! I think that perhaps it was particularly noticeable because I've tuned out my own emotes and don't really notice them anymore, while this expansion showed more of Wuk than of my wol- so when the clenched fist things happened multiple times in a row it was jarring.

The expansion so far is written like a generic shounen anime, and it's not unexpected. Writers love using popular tropes to get their jobs done easier instead of trying anything bold. It is a little disappointing though when you consider that this game has done some genuinely compelling storytelling before. And a little extra disappointing when you remember that this is the beginning of a new saga. Then again, ARR was... a lot... but it got better in HW.

All we need to complete the shounen trope though is a tournament arc......wait, the raid series....

Whenever Wuk clenched her fist I thought "With those nails?!". Those are daggers, she would be bleeding every time.

Oh my god this though!!
I was wearing that one bikini/jacket combo (you know the one from the billboard?) 'cause beach episode, and just every other scene my wol was giving themselves a hearty squish squish.

Like I know it's a generic "leave it to me" emote, but like... can I do a thumbs up???

To clarify- I know this is a trope that has been going on for ages- it just seemed excessively used in DT- more than other expansions. I think at one point I saw it happen at least 4 times in a 20 minute span of cutscenes!!

Omg I didn't even think of the boob pat thing. I think I've completely zoned it out completely and it doesn't even register anymore. That's definitely more frequently used.

Wuk clenched her hands way too much. They really got mileage out of that animation.

I'd take a million clenched fists over even *one* more cs where you hand an invisible item in your palm to a quest NPC.
