Fisher NEEDS a rework

I'd say, not like rework rework but more "FSH needs to be relevant".

Because, let's be honest here. You are only reminded about fishing when the new aethersand tier drops in and you need ones that come from fishes. Aside from it, how does it feel having an inventory full of stinky and absolutely useless fish? That only one CUL on your server will ever buy from you on marketboard?

It's insane how FSH is not relevant when put against other two gatherers. 95% of the fishes you catch are absolute junk that you can only put on the canvas, the other 5% are needed for CUL recipes and well, good luck selling that. And what's the point of big green named fishes other than you can put some in aquarium?

If you compare FSH to BTN and MIN in terms of scrip farming, again, it's WAY easier to pull out the other gatherers. Same for treasure maps.

FSH needs some more recognition! They should do something about it because it's been this way for god knows how long. The last meaningful addition to fishing was ocean fishing but well, who goes ocean fishing once they get all the rewards from there?

Maybe one step into the right direction would be increasing the amount of scrips you get when turning in collectable fishes compared to logs or ores. The other proposition is to add some actual rewards for catching big fishes, maybe add some NPC who will accept them for monetary reward (gil or scrips or maybe a new currency entirely).

And yeah, I understand that maybe the main point of FSH is being a fun, relaxing and non-commited job that kills time in between roulette queues, while you listen to lofi radio, I get all that. But honestly, to me it's a damn shame that such a fun job really falls behind the other two gatherers in terms of actual usefulness.

I feel like a tackle box should be the first in line QoL for fishing

After that, yeah, we can start looking into other improvements. A new fishing minigame perhaps (tied to ocean fishing or certain fish?), a overall review of the rewards when compared to the other gatherers, etc

My personal approach would be to add fish bounties in a board similar to the hunt board, awarding the reward for catching it yourself and not from the Market

Complementary, allowing "useless" fish to be turned for steamed or dried fish, or kelp perhaps, for fishing-related crafts or generic food would be a welcome adition

Yeah, fish bounties sound like a great idea! Maybe there can also be weekly challenges for catching specific type of fish or maybe even fisher's leaderboards for big fishes!

Fishing is mostly fine as is. A few QoL improvements would be nice (better bait management, longer windows for certain fish, etc), but beyond that I don't think it needs much. Yeah, most of the fish are literally worthless, but being a mostly self contained collectathon is kind of the point.

Fishing is more of a hobby than a dedicated gathering job in this game. I level mine so I can get what little I need for crafting on my own then otherwise ignore it. I've got much better ways to make gil.

If you're trying to make gil from it, go after the more interesting aquarium fish. Some will have good market value depending on popularity and how much effort is needed to get them.

Then why it is a separate gatherinmg job, with its own tools, MASSIVE fishing log and even it's own minigame for spearfishing? They clearly wanted fisher to be more than just a hobby, even judging by a sheer amount of effort they put into it, from descriptions of every fish, 95% of which are just useless fillers, to different baits, aquarium fishes, fishes on canvases etc etc etc

It's a helluva lot of effort for a hobby job to me. And it does seem like wasted effort because most of fisher's content do not have practical uses.

Why is BLU a separate combat job with its own tools, massive spell log, and even the masked carnival minigame? Clearly, they wanted BLU to be more than just a limited job and piece of side content, judging by the sheer amount of effort they put into it, descriptions for all the spells, most of which really aren't used, to different spell vfx, etc. They even keep adding new stuff to it every few patches.

The thing most players miss about Fishing is that while Fisher may have started as a gathering job, it very quickly evolved into basically a DoL limited job akin to BLU for DoW's. It's an optional side thing that you can choose to do, or not to do. There is nothing wrong with giving people something to do. It's ok to have something to do and it not have a 100% purpose, some people just like to do things to do the thing.

When I checked about a year ago, ignoring the "I caught that" achievements, where you could make the argument every fish as purpose... Over 50% of fish had an actual use, either as a leve, GC turn in, quest turn in, delivery, big fish, crafting, etc.

Fishing is more along the lines of 'gotta catch em all' passive. How many people do you know that have their whole fishing log completed?
You can also desynth the stinky fish for crystals.

Or you can avoid the inventory clutter by tossing the stinky fish back into the water after you catch them with the job action Release List.

Fruity Snacks came and said what I wanted to. I don't think it's fair or necessary to compare FSH to other gatherers. Way I see it, it has two faucets to it. The first is purely of utility and how it can get things to get materials as a means to an end. It's the easiest class to level in the game, and they've made it competent for doing allied quests and custom deliveries. Get what you want and get out.

But that's not what people who love fishing see. They see the collection minigame, using fish to learn more about the lore of the setting, a sense of community, and a fun challenge. Fishing has a unique experience of planning and timing and both working with and besting nature. Like I agree we could do with some QoL but overall it's rewarding enough, both in terms of experience and monetary benefit. Think it's no coincidence fishing has worked out well when integrated with housing via aquariums, since both are largely activities you do as its own rewards.

To you perhaps. It is very different for others, especially those in the JP player base where fishing is extremely popular.

Just because something is there doesn't mean you need to do it if you don't enjoy it. I level fishing strictly so I can catch what few fish I'll need for crafting and otherwise ignore it.

That doesn't mean I think it should be altered to suit me while destroying it for those who enjoy what it currently is.

If you're not having fun with it, don't do it.

I understand that some people wish for FSH to have more utility than it currently does, but personally, I'm quite satisfied with its current state. It seems that other fishers share this sentiment, especially considering the recent updates in DT.

You have to get a bit creative but there is more than fish for craftigen recipes and aether sands. You can still fish for the bathing suits and sandals, collect gathering scrips and turn them into money with materia or the new mount for example, you can grind in Diadem for Ishgard reconstruction and sell mounts and stuff you can get from the skybuilder scrips.

Sadly the pets you can fish are worthless now since they added the loot boxes for GC seals.

If you actually want to play fisher you can always find a reason to do so and make some money. But if you don't look deep enough you will only see the 2-3 fish used for crafting recipes and that's it.

I would like for the fishes in general to be more relevant than they currently are. A lot of them are worthless once caught, and the rest have their usefulness vary depending on the expansion/patch.

How many CUL recipes use fish vs the stupid amount we have?
How many other crafters use fish?
How many fishes are available to be showcased in aquariums? Currently we are missing other fishing environments that could be very interesting (skyfishing aquarium? Yes!) and a very minuscule number of the fin-havers can even be put in there. Not to mention that you cannot remove them once in, which I would like as a QoL.
Can I please have a tacklebox, my inventory is drowning in bait.

I'm satisfied with the current gameplay of FSH, just not the relevance of the catches.

Fair amount actually! Beyond CUL using fish, Alchemist use fish as well, and the latter's fish products are used with basically every other crafter. There's even unique fish-only sands each expansion. (Mythbrine, for DT for instance, if you're raiding and crafting your own gear, you'll need it)

162 Rod Caught Fish, 51 Spearfish can go into aquariums.

And yes, I would also like to see at least Aetherchemical or Salt-lake fish get added as aquarium biomes.

This has actually been addressed! One, you could use Versatile Lure if you want, but two... SE has already stated that (at the time) they would rather give everyone more general inventory space than a specific tacklebox only a small portion of players would use. There's MORE people fishing now though since that was aid, so who knows if that'll change.

Some other facts:
There's 197 total collectable fish, some of which are used to desynth into sand or glioaethers.
15+ desynth into a glamour items (one is actually a piece of crafting gear, another a crafted primal weapon)
288 (at least) give materia of some sorts.
There's a handful of minions that come from Fishing as well.


1,418 rod fish and 289 spear fish are in the game as of patch 7.0.

... There's a lot used. Not all of them, but WAY more than people expect.

I enjoy fishing, but I would be considerably more motivated if they added more variety to what can be put in an aquarium. There's a long list of what can be showcased, but many of them are very similar or just boring to look at.

I like fisher and the DT updates were extremely good.

I wish more desynths were interesting.

the only thing fisher needs is a high lvl spear fishing gig. It annoys me so much to have that lvl 61 offhand.

There's an easier way to fix that. Don't include the offhand slot when it comes to calculating average item level. That shouldn't be difficult consider all the combat jobs that don't even have an off hand.

Some of the green fish desynth into rare drops. It makes fishing a little more exciting and worthwhile.

Overall fishing needs to be more rewarding. There are a ton of fish that are absolutely worthless. Every fish should have a purpose outside of desynth into common drops. It would even be nice if they gave more and different kinds of crystals.

Shrieker (common fish) - Waterproof Cotton Cloth
Archbishop (Big fish) - Cane of the Round (crafted version)
Glarramundi (Big fish) - Onishi Dogi

Also the last fishable minions were in Stormblood!
Tiny Tatsunoko is spearfished in the Ruby Sea
Castaway Chocobo Chick was added to the Isle of Endless Summer Fishing spot in Costa Del Sol, E. La Noscea, with patch 4.0 (when swimming was added).

Also ignores some fish which drop pigments!

Finally someone addressed this complaint I had for years. Its had to hear people agrue that 10/1000+ items is relevant. I want more for FSH. But after hearing other FSHs voice their opinions, I have to respect there is a community that enjoys the vibe. It would be nice to get the better pool of useful items as well as a vibe. Maybe one day

You just can't give hundreds of fish a meaningful purpose.

The purpose of the useless fish is to be a gameplay element anyway. If you were always winning at the gamble machine where would be the fun in it?

i wish bait was more useful to the fisher. Certain bait should exclude certain fish in each fishing hole. right now all the bait seems to be the same

Baits also have varied bite-times and bite-rates of fish that do bite on them, which is an added layer of optimization you can make.

Years ago I suggested adding some craftable items as desynth for each level range that would be used by CUL/ALC (mainly) like fish meat (filet/steak/paste/etc) byproducts (bones/scales/liver/etc). that way, no need for thousands use, just a few recipes every 10 levels
