DLSS and Graphical settings.

I do not get it at all.

New City. 30+- fps.

DLSS of FSR do not do ANYTNYNG, not even +1 fps.

I tried all settings, its absurd.

PS: Yes I know it`s not a gaming CPU, but all other modern game on max is no problem for it, DLSS just do not work for me somehow.

I was testing my system to see how much the GPU load changes, and it "feels" like the game doesn't change when you switch from FSR to DLSS. Like it's only enabled if you switch to DLSS, restart the game, but then if you change any setting it's turned off.

Then again I have a 3090, so it might simply be that it doesn't hit below 60 fps for me in the first place to turn it on.

This game is weird.

It's not like they're weak PCs either, all high end. My current build is a 7800X3D setup and I can barely get 110FPS with FSR on max(50).

You have a 4090 — the most powerful GPU on the market — paired with a 3960X, a CPU made for productivity, not gaming.

You are CPU-bound. Practically everyone is, especially on the AMD side, as Intel CPUs perform better in this game (see GamersNexus benchmarks)

The DLSS implementation is forced to be dynamic res right now. It checks the GPU load and progressively lowers the resolution if it's too high.

If you use debug tools to check what DLSS is doing, you'll see that it's staying at DLAA (100% res), considering how overkill your video card is.

Therefore, lowering your resolution using FSR (or DLSS) would not net you any performance gains.

It`s all good and all, but why any other game of this year or last works on max, some even without DLSS?
For instance dead island 2, last year game, all maxed, 60+ fps stable (Monitor 60Hz). No DLSS. Played yesterday.

FFXIV is just a CPU-bound game (especially with tons of players on screen, as is likely to happen right now, during the expansion launch).

You can mitigate this by reducing the "character & object quantity on screen" setting, found under the [...] button under system settings.

DLSS or FSR or any technique like it will NOT DO ANYTHING if your game is CPU bound and not GPU bound.

Your old threadripper is holding ffxiv back a lot depending on your character limit and object limit settings. Turn down your settings that have to do with the CPU, profit

Mmm, on minimum EVEYTHING including "character & object quantity on screen" still 30 fps when I stand near the NPC with 10–15 players around. This is absurd! It's not a core duo from 2005.
Moreover, I got Very Hight in the Downtrail benchmark, so, you are saying that very high from SquareEnix means 30 fps?

This CPU from 2020, was announced in November 2019. This CPU is for work, very powerful, and once again: The only game I have problem with my CPU+ GPU is FF14. All other games, from Cyberpunk to the latest Elden Ring DLC, are on MAX.

You complain about a game that uses like 4 threads very heavily about how bad it runs on your *WORKSTATION* CPU.... ya know how -redacted- that sounds? it sounds like you have more money than sense. You don't buy a EPYC CPU and run star craft 2 on it and expect it to run at 500 FPS. Sure that 128 core cpu running at 3 ghz per core is super good at rendering using all cores but when you throw a game at it that uses 1 or 2 cores it sucks... because duhh. An extreme example for sure but one that hits home just how ridiculous you are making this out to be. I mean the 5950x beats your cpu in some multithreaded tasks for crying out loud and the 9000 CPUs are about to come out.

Time to upgrade.

I have a 5900X with PBO2 on (4.9ghz in games such as XIV) and i get 100-120 at no matter what my settings are for the most part. Hoping for the ryzen 10000 CPUs to really bring it for me to upgrade finally.

You clearly are doing something wrong as the CPU should NOT be preforming that poorly but it still wont preform well as it is not what that CPU was made to do. I don't understand how someone who "needs" that cpu to work for a living can understand so little about technology.

On my potato GPU i noticed that switching ambient occlusion from HBAO + Quality to something else, gives me a pretty big fps boost.

While possessing impressive multi core performance, Threadripper of that era has middling at best single core performance compared even to CPUs of its own generation due to lower clock speeds. I's expect modern Ryzen to have nearly double the single core performance (unverified, only suspected, not checking benches right now MSQ to do) which, by the way is what XIV likes. It does NOT multi thread well. When one is CPU bound as you are no reduction in graphical settings will make any difference in performance whatsoever.

I'm getting around 80+fps in the new city right now on Maximum settings.
Late night so not as many people around so might tank a little more if there are.

He clearly doesn't understand this. No amount of talking sense to him will reason him out of the position that he didn't reason himself into.

When you look at the imbalance of the hardware, one has to think that the gpu and ram were just slapped in there (huge waste of money too as the ram and gpu are completely wasted ) recently without regard as to the rest of the system. You don’t turn a Corolla into Ferrari by putting a Ferrari engine in it. There’s probably a bunch of outdated things in there too + bloat. Power supply could be an issue too powering that. OP should post a dxdiag as just the very basic hardware is insufficient.

No, that not the case. I know what I put on my PC. The only not that fast thing except CPU is RAM, its 2.66 overclocked to 3200, but it could not affect so much.

it’s one of the most imbalanced systems for someone who knows what they put in their pc. The ultra expensive (and now old) mobo doesn’t make sense either. Why don’t you post the diagnostic as required? Just the name of the hardware parts is insufficient. Make sure drivers and bios are up to date.

Could be a pcie bus problem too with that Mobo. As for hardware, whoever advised you, had no clue what they were doing and made you waste money for absolutely nothing. Could have gotten something much more balanced and better for a lot less.

Workstation PC or not, the game should be performing a lot better on that setup. To be honest, it feels like the game runs pretty poorly for the visual upgrade we did get.

Their DLSS implementation is 100% busted (anyone who argues against this is wrong -- people are getting better FPS on FSR which is just silly). It's been a problem since the benchmark and was never addressed.

The best approach I've found is to use some of the DLSS tools available and force the quality preset settings across all presets since they don't give you control over which one is running. You'll actually get some benefits if you do that and should get a better frame rate.

I noticed it degraded my benchmark score by around 1K, so I leave it set to FSR (AMD GPU is disabled) I''m running at 1920 x 1299 native, so no need for scaling anyway.

If your system is CPU limited then DLSS will not improve the performance. DLSS helps the GPU. But since you have a RTX 4090, it very unlikely, that your GPU is the bottleneck.

There seem to be stuttering issues with a lot of varying setups, not just OP's. Even lowering the settings to the lowest still has issues. FPS drop in any area, usually from above 60 down to 10-ish everyy few seconds. No idea why it's happening.

Whatever DLSS setup they have implemented it is completely bogus.

In other games, I can see a noticeable difference in GPU utilization depending on whether DLSS is off/on.

Not so in XIV. No matter what I set, my 3080 just doesn't give a hoot.

I also find it very strange that XIV can tax my GPU to 100%, barely managing a stable 60FPS @ 4K with (supposedly) DLSS active, considering this game doesn't even employ any ray tracing. o_O

I haven't noticed any discernable difference between FSR and DLSS from my time playing so far, and opted to just stick with FSR for now. I seem to have no trouble keeping a consistent ~60 (manually capped at 62) FPS with my 3070 at 1440p with maxed out settings. Even in crowded areas I don't seem to go above 60% GPU usage.

Has everyone that's having issues made sure to update their graphics drivers? There was a new Nvidia driver that was released a few days ago that included optimization for Dawntrail.

How does a driver update make you want to call them ngreedia? Like there are real reasons to hate on Nvidia but releasing a driver with optimizations for your game isn't it.

DLSS looks blurry when walking running. During cutscenes the graphics would drop to low settings randomly.

30fps seems like a bit of a specific framerate. Are you sure you screen isn't set to 30Hz, either in the FF display settings itself if that is set to "fullscreen", or in the Windows monitor settings if FF display settings is set to "borderless windowed". If that is set to 60 (or higher), maybe your fps is capped to half/quarter rate at the bottom of the FF display settings? Or double check the Nvidia control panel for a framerate cap, either globally or in the FF profile.
