Benchmark Male Miqo'te Face 1 Feedback: Nope, still F#%@ed.

As I suspected, every issue I brought up about the male miqo'te model have gone unresolved. My character still looks like a soulless husk whose personality has been butchered.

The shape of the eyes is obviously different.

As shown in the image above, the issue lies primarily in the upper eyelid which I assume is meant to be an abstract form of eyelashes. Original on the left, new on the right. You can see a noticeable difference in expression based on how the thickness and shape of the eyelashes affect the look of the eyes, with the older model's eyelashes being thicker, thus contributing to a more awake and alert look.

At the very bottom, I modified the new model's eyes in photoshop to demonstrate how a change to the eyelashes could change the eyes to more resemble the old model. The eyes used in all of these images is option 6 (because that's the one I prefer using).

Probably the most egregious error is in the mouth, which I pointed out in my previous thread as well. The shapes and nuances of the lips are just completely wrong all over.

First of all, the mouth is definitely too wide, there's not much doubt about that if you ask me.

Aside from that, the shape of the lips, as shown in the image, is all wrong. Aside from just the shape itself being different, they also extend further to the sides of the mouth rather than receding inward, further contributing to the appearance of the mouth being too wide.

There is some different in the upper lip too, particularly in the fullness, but that's not enough of an issue that I can't live with it so long as the lower lip is changed.

As shown in the image, the changes become especially pronounced in mouth 4, which may as well be a completely different option now. I assume that the options outside of mouth 1 are just squashed and stretched variants of mouth 1, and with the changes to the shapes and textures, this causes mouth 4 to completely lose its distinguishing features because the shapes formerly present in mouth 1 are no longer there to be pronounced further.


Overall, I'm extremely disappointed. I'd really expect the developers to do better, and hope they'll take the time to adjust what needs adjusting. There is no way to return my characters to the way they're supposed to be even with fantasia because of these changes, and it's honestly making me dread the release of Dawntrail rather than look forward to it.

I agree with your assessment, the changes made are clearly different from the original model and while I understand the need to innovate and update the models I must say it should be done whilst still preserving the characters overall look and style. I hope that the dev team do take these criticisms and actually attempt to revise the the changes made to certain miqo'te faces.

You seem like someone who will never be happy regardless. End of the day, no one is getting everything they want. They said characters WILL look different. End of story. DT is going to get delayed because you don't like the changes.

I don't see where you got that notion. I can accept that some change is inevitable, but this is way too much. The entire character of the face is ruined. And Squeenix specifically said they want to do their best to preserve the spirit of the models. I don't see much of a point in updating the models if all it achieves is alienating the players from their own characters, and I know I'm far from the only person who's unhappy.

Yeah, male miqo'te face 1 still feels a bit "dead inside". I don't think the changes to eyes did much for us.

I also agree that the changes to mouth 4 are too big, as it's just a slightly shorter mouth 1 but lost many of its other features. I'm personally not too bothered by it, but it does mean a loss of options for those wishing for a smaller and tighter mouth and lips...

Let's hope they address this in the future.

respectfully, do you have anything better to do than barge into every thread providing constructive feedback on the graphical changes (which the devs encourage, btw) and waggle your finger at how ~ungrateful~ and ~unreasonable~ people are being over significant changes to their characters that they can't do anything to fix? i promise you square enix won't collapse into dust over the criticism.

I am devastated to see that nothing has changed for male miqo face 1 between the last benchmark and this one. After the first benchmark was released I even went as far as to post on the japanese forum (with auto translate) to try make my complaints with the new mouth shapes heard. But from what I saw scouring both forums there were really few people actually talking about this, despite face 1 being the most used for male miqo. Kinda feels like we're actually in the minority finding these changes worse?

To me it literally looks like a different person after the update, this is not one of the things that can be tweaked with the free fanta. Face 1 ceases to exist with Dawntrail if these changes go through, to be replaced with something entirely different. This is not what they promised us when they said they would keep the images of our characters with the graphics update.

Honestly, would it be too hard for square to allow us to have the old face textures as an option in the settings?
Might cause problems with future helms i suppose, is why they don't want it.
I'm very happy with my character personally but the option would be nice

People are allowed to express their disappointment in this with whatever words they want, and zooming and redlining is an important tool for pointing out the specific things that are bothering them in a way that is actually actionable. I've had clients, plural, redline my own art to point required changes out, so saying that having to do that is a sign of making up problems is just being dismissive and petty when you could just ignore the thread.

frankly im tired of the disaster that cats have largely been through all this so no effort for a better comparison
face 1 mooncat, mouth 4 got completely destroyed, mouth 4 is now just like any other mouth, long wide normie, the only small mouth REMOVED from cats, not to mention the narrowing of the nose to lip ridges are so narrow, the already tragically none existent eyebrows are even more non existent now, might as pull a highlander and look like super saiyan 3, the scars are crazy long now, culminating in my main character looking like they got hit with the derp bat.. repeatedly

theres also countless other issues going on with cats but ill focus on face 1 for here, all in all with how long the graphics update was planned, with the level of "unintended" issues, complete changes to some features and faces, it really feels to me like something either went seriously wrong or is still going wrong and they have had to try and do all this in very little time, not from the time that a graphics update was announced like i would hope
this isnt an attack at the devs, im sure they are working themselves to the bone and shouldnt be unappreciated and rarely are issues caused by devs themselves, i just hope all this can get fixed even if its after the launch

this has all very much shown me that ffxiv is in desperate need of a character creator update to add more faces and features to increase customization (like adding back mouth 4, or changing it back and adding the current mouth as a mouth 5 for example) (and for other races faces like male viera having very dirty nose or less dirty, face4 female miqo having a mouth gap or not, viera having larger or smaller pupils yes pupils not iris) as all these changes between the benchmarks and before end up just being discarded assets and effort, which is quite sad, when all those "changed" features could be their very own options giving more creative freedom to have more unique characters

I agree with all of that, yup. Mouth 4 really has been absolutely shafted incredibly hard and it's really affected my alt that uses it. Like I mentioned, I think it's rooted in the shape of the base mouth, so hopefully it's as simple as fixing that and the other mouth options will look the way they're supposed to as well.

Disappointing that barely anyone seems to care about this. I see so many people complain about face 4, but they screwed up face 1 just as much if not more :(

Seems like anytime someone brings up a change that really does destroy a character's vibe, people just dismiss it as if they are the same, regardless of how obvious the changes are. People seem to think just because they don't play the race or use the same shape of face that it's okay to belittle others, especially if their race actually survived the transition without any obvious deformities from the original design.

Seconding this SO MUCH. PLEASE HELP, my gorgeous thoughtful-looking sparkly-eyed boy turns into a vapid-looking person with a vacant expression in the benchmark and I hate it so much; it's actually making me cry.

I thought the graphical updates were going to update textures not CHANGE THE LOOK OF OUR CHARACTERS' FACES TO SOMETHING HORRIBLE?

Please put face 1 back the way it was!! The incorrect eye shape and lip shape make his face look squashed and vacant.

I have a gorgeous male keeper of the moon in the current game and the benchmark COMPLETELY WRECKS HIM. I spend most of my time in-game staring at him because he's so pretty and if this goes through I will hate to look at him. I love this game and spend time almost every day in here and have a community- please don't destroy my pride and joy. Instead of looking forward to Dawntrail I feel like it's just a ticking clock on losing him forever. Please fix this and make face 1 the way it was.

He has eyes 1, mouth 3, jaw 3 and nose 3. OP is very right that the eyes and mouth and shape of the face changes, which I think is to blame for most of the moronic look, even if the washed-out part was fixed.

Other issues I will note more elsewhere as this post is focused on basic facial structure problems: he's super washed out, the heck? His HAIR is supposed to be a nice saturated black, what is happening here. His SCAR is also way too long; it should not extend nearly down to his mouth. See the much smaller scar in the comparison pic where it stops at the end of his nose. If Square wants to add a longer scar, they should add it as an option, not randomly change what we have into something very different.

PLEASE DON'T TURN MY GORGEOUS BOY INTO THIS VACANT DEFORMED STRANGER. I upgraded my entire computer for DT in order to keep my boy looking good, not... like a vacant moron.
We need face 1 and the eyes and mouths drawn back the way they are!! We've loved these characters for years, a graphics update shouldn't change the fundamentals of their facial structures.

I would like to thank them for listening to the feedback on moonkeeper fangs and restoring them. There are also a few more lights in the eyes than the first benchmark, however, they ONLY SHOW UP WHEN ZOOMED IN AND MOVING. My mooncat's shiny eyes are one of my favorite features about him. The irises should have a shimmer to them and they should *always* have lights in them. Please give us an option to toggle the catchlight back on since the "dynamic" lighting isn't working when they are standing still or at a comfortable zoom.

The scar should end at the nose length. If Square wants to add one that goes down to the mouth, they should add it as an additional option, not take away what we have.

The hair is also clearly washed out as noted above. It should be a saturated black. It looks nearly grey in the Benchmark video itself.

As soon as I saw a picture of the new cat boy NPC in DT (Koana) sporting the messed up face 1 before the 2nd benchmark released, deep down I knew they weren't gonna do jack shit about it. I wish they'd just let him have a unique face and fix it for the rest of us, but seeing how few people are complaining about this - despite face 1 being the most popular one - I think we'll have to accept the new reality that face 1 as we know and love it will not exist anymore 2 weeks from now... I hate to be such a downer, but there's just not enough people making a stink about this :(

I am hopeful that they will follow on the feedback we've given when it comes to face 1.

While not as numerous as face 4, there's been quite a bit of posts about it and many in the JP thread are asking the devs to clarify the timeline of taking feedback into account when it comes to the graphical update of the characters.

I want to believe that they'll keep including changes for a while.

Yup, 100% agreed about the scar, it is way too long.

Regarding what you said about the hair, I think that applies to all characters, not just ours, so hopefully that's likely to get looked at. But man, our characters really aren't looking themselves in DT. I hope all our catboys will be fixed.

So, I go over this in my own thread but the changes to mouth shape are absolutely not specific to male miqote face 1. It's a consistent issue across many faces in the game and easily the one change that contributes the most to our WoLs appearing different in ways we don't want.

This change to the lower lip shape happens to almost all races when lip color is applied:

I don't believe the physical geometry of the lips actually changed, which you can confirm by turning off lip color. This means we could get an improved appearance for all of our characters if they adjust how lip color is applied to the lower lip. I would prefer this change as an option but it's clear that many people are unhappy with the change to the lower lip.

If you want to see changes, I recommend not hyperfocusing on your own WoL's face but instead try to highlight issues that are common across many different races and genders. It will be harder for the dev team to justify the changes as an intentional "we did say your WoL would look different" if they're shown that all races now have the exact same lower lip makeup. It's such a small thing but it seriously messes with the perception of our characters.

I would highly recommend using Google Translate or DeepL to post your concerns over in the JP bug report forums. I just saw today that someone's bug report for Face 4 M Miqo got moved to the "accepted and scheduled for fix" thread--there's a good chance that you'd get somewhere with the same process for Face 1!

The Face 4 bug report detailed specific graphical glitches such as seams in the ears. Even if they did mention places where it simply looks different aesthetically I really don't think that's the part of the bug report that was "accepted." Nothing described in this thread strikes me as an actual bug, and even if there was you'll notice the English forums have an "Accepted Bugs" section that the community team is actively moving reports into, so there shouldn't be a need to google translate your bug report.

They were very clear in saying that our WoLs would look different and are generously giving us a fantasia, so describing specific changes to one face on one race would probably be met with a collective shrug. Again, I don't think having a "male miqo face 4" thread and a "male miqo face 1" thread will accomplish anything on their own.

What needs to happen if we're going to nudge the dev team into making subjective, aesthetic changes to improve our WoLs' appearance is to identify common, pervasive issues affecting multiple races to ensure everyone is on board with it. Otherwise people will just be like... eh, I don't play catboy so w/e.

After posting in the general benchmark thread, I've been trying to figure out what it is that bothers me so much about the changes to face 1. They really are subtle, but I guess it's because the face itself is very smooth, a bit of a baby face, that they stand out so much. To me, most of the detail and charm and sharpness is in the eyes and the lips. Here's my Keeper from Endwalker to first Dawntrail benchmark to updated benchmark, mouth 4, eye shape 3.

You may be right about the lips. The mouth is still definitely too wide though, so just adjusting the lip texture won't be enough, and there's several other issues specific to this face.

My post on the low resolution textures found on the male miqo'te face 1 has been moved to "accepted bugs" and hopefully the other one on graphical issues on the ears of male miqo'te will, too, after I expanded it with extra information.

If there's any specific issue that you think they could fix such as lip shape being changed for almost all faces and genders, consider writing a detailed bug report. It might get accepted.

This change in the lips is the biggest thing bothering me now- even without lip color (which I dislike because lips naturally have some color to them!), the new mouth 4 lips are... not right. In addition to what you've said (lips too wide, shape is wrong) I think the shadow under the lower lip is also contributing- the different shape it has in the benchmark (shorter and wider) just accentuates the changes to its shape. Overall it looks more like the old mouth 3 I think.

Another issue I've run into with the benchmark is the eyebrows (type 5 is what I use)- the 6.58 eyebrows have thicker lines; the newer ones are a lot thinner (I assume with the texture upgrade), but they didn't add more of them- so the newer ones aren't as noticeable as the old ones (which were already not very noticeable to begin with). At least with the coloring my miqo has (pale skin with dark hair- though I can also see the smoothing effect on OP's miqo too- it's worse in the 1.1 Benchmark than the original benchmark too) the actual hair of the eyebrows is pretty much entirely lost in the eyebrow ridge/shadow now- contributed to by the change in the shadows above the eye. It looks okay up close, but from a distance it's not a great look and it contributes a lot to the blander, more baby-faced version of this face in the benchmark. It would be nice to have a toggle for thicker eyebrows (like face 4 has in Facial Features).

I also noticed the neck seam Aco505 mentioned in their bug post- impossible to miss from the side, regardless of face or skin color. It bugs me less than the mouth and eyebrows though! (Other minor issues I've seen are the eye color is a lot darker in the benchmark- easy to remedy with the free fantasia, fortunately and the texture of the non-removable "cheetah" lines under the eye & in face paint being noticeably not upgraded and looking worse now for the comparison.)

I agree with everything. There's a lot of things that would require some tweaking to make them look better:

- The lip shape #4 being changed, which means the male miqo'te face 1 doesn't have a true small mouth option anymore.

- The color of the eyes being darker now, which also has the effect of making the slit pupils of Seekers less noticeable. You can choose a lighter color in the same line in the character creator but it may inevitably introduce changes elsewhere (e. g. depending on lighting) so either you get used to the new tone or you get used to a relatively similar one that can still be different.

- The eyebrows being thinner and the lack of thickness options.

- The markings below the eyes for males having low resolution even though they're not paint, I guess due to the fact that all face paint is still low res.

- Low resolution textures or issues on some parts of the face and ears, including the neck seam.

- Many haircuts still looking too pixelated and with strange shapes, as well as the problem of hairstyles showing noticeable gaps between skin and hair.

There's probably more that I'm forgetting but clearly there's still things to improve. I've given feedback about these in different posts and threads, including my own, just like so many other players both in the English and Japanese forums.

Let's just hope that all this feedback actually materializes into fixes for face 1.

After that, we need a character creator expansion and overhaul with things like beard options for all faces, as well as a graphical update to bodies at some point. Otherwise, it's going to be too jarring to have high resolution heads and faces while the rest of the body is low resolution.

Same.. although I'm bracing myself for the inevitable disappointment when I log on tomorrow to see nothing has changed.

The reason why I'm invested in seeing this fixed is because my boyfriend plays a male face 1 mouth 4 miqo and he is literally disgusted with the changes. He doesn't wanna post here on the forums, but he has expressed to me how he is not looking forward at all to logging in to his char looking like that... breaks my heart to hear him say that :(

Here's hoping that once the patch goes live people who have been sleeping on the benchmark will see the changes and start nagging SE to fix it.

Well, that's a little promising. I won't get my hopes up though. But it does seem they're listening which is good news, so that gives me some hope that if it won't be all good at launch, they'll continue to work on it!
