FF 16 cross over event... A HUGE DISPOINTMENT

I was extremely excited for the FF 16 event til I did it... it was sooo short! The way YoshyP hyped this event had Mr thinking this was a full pledge event.. but all we got was a few dialog, ifrit, a little more dialog and done.. took like 20mins. This event was a joke and felt lazy AF. My rating for this event is 2 out of 5..below average. Ifrit was fun, the story wasn't interesting and was extremely short... do better YoshyP

Thank God the story wasn't long. I was so bored skipping dialogue and cutscenes. The fight was somewhat interesting with a bit of iframing introduced - hopefully a feature we're gonna see sometime in the future

I mean, we were expecting it to be like the FF15 event, which was about the same. It was always gonna be a slow, over-telegraphed version of what the game is actually like with mostly just a fight with a primal from the game and then a bunch of gold saucer rewards.

I will not be surprised if WAR mains will clamor should other tanks get it. All the sodium chloride emanating from the spoiled children of Eorzea then they'll get buffed through the roof, once again.

What even is a full fledged event in your eyes in this game? Some dialogue and more dialogue describes 90% of events, throw a solo duty or FATE in and that's the remaining 10%. It's about on par with other ff crossover events, and frankly, idk what got you so hyped thinking it'd be next gen different or something.

It was pretty much on par with the XV event, which is what I was expecting.

Every single event from the beginning of the game to now has been this, except this one at least has a boss fight with some kind of mechanic in it, if anything it's above average for an FFXIV event... do you even play the game?

The event was about the length I expected but I do think giving Clive such powerful amnesia and making the WOL useless so yoshi p could be the star was a strange decision

I preferred the FFXV event to this one. It had more stuff to do. There was an open world FATE you could run a few times to get all the orchestrion rolls, as well as a unique solo instance boss battle with a demon in East Shroud, and then finally the awesome battle against Garuda where you could use the Warp Strike. The dodge action they gave us in the FFXVI Ifrit battle was fun, but I think the Warp Strike's utility was more satisfying.

I think the story scenes in the FFXV event were more fun too, like how Cid is involved, you have the little campfire scene in the forest, having Garuda from Noctis's home world be a conduit that ends up being the solution to him getting back. As someone who still hasn't played either FFXV or FFXVI yet, the FFXV crossover story made more sense to me and was more interesting. I found the FFXVI crossover dialogue pretty boring, and him turning into Ifrit to beat up the other Ifrit is just nonsense with no explanation. Also, I didn't know that Clive was responsible for Joshua's death. Seems they spoiled the story of the game..??

It was cool that they were able to get the producer of FFXVI to do a cameo appearance though. I wonder if he plays FFXIV. Someone should tell him about the expanded free trial which you can play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and the award-winning Heavensward, and thrilling Stormblood expansions up to level 70 for free with no restrictions on playtime.

it was pretty much exactly what I expected and was neither surprised nor disappointed.

what is it you were expecting OP? a multi part quest chain stretching until release of 7.3?

Yoshi P didnt want to spoil much, so it ended up pretty resticted and bland. That being said, post PC launch of FFXVI wouldnt mind if they added more to it...

Well said! I completely agree with you. I like to do activities to earn the rewards.. they could've made ifrit farmable to get some of the scrolls instead they put them in the Gold Saucer...

There are no shortage of posts on this forum complaining about the FF15, FF16, or Yokai Watch events among other things. People forget one key thing: this is Final Fantasy XIV by Square Enix. You can't expect Blizzard levels of content in this game.

Agreed. Apart from the Fall Guys, Yokai Watch, Garo, Dragon Quest, or Monster Hunter events, FFXIV has always been about getting your gear quickly so you can go back to your idle spot and play other games. Especially considering that this is a cameo for another Final Fantasy game. I mean, how much material could they possibly be working with? This isn't the same company that made FF1 through 10. Did anything notable even come from FF16 besides how badly it impacted Endwalker? Do we really need to see more from Clive of all people?

"Silent Hill" seems like it would be a lore-appropriate Hellsguard Roegadyn name, like Curious Gorge or Hoary Boulder.

I just did the event. Oddly enough, it actually exceeded my expectations. Unlike the XV collab event, this one actually got me interested in XVI. It's still not going to make me go out and buy it, though, as I would also have to dump cash into purchasing a PS5. The gaming industry, particularly Sony continue to hit the accelerator towards the iceberg with all the censorship, ESG, and DEI BS, that I just can't justify spending money on anything new. My recent purchases towards games have all been older games such as Metroid Prime Remastered, NieR: Automata, and Super Meat Boy. All for Nintendo Switch, and all having original releases prior to 2020. Even though I will be picking up the DT expansion, it is still something I consider to be a purchase towards an older game.

As for the event itself, there are some specific reasons why it was able to resonate with me. One reason was how it used Phoenix to tie the worlds together, which I thought was brilliant. The battle with Ifrit was also really good. Not as good as the fight with Garuda for the XV event, but still engaging and fun. Clive is also very handsome. It was a good thing G'raha wasn't around to see my character's reaction to his presence, lol. I can even see his thoughts, "Wait a min... I traversed time itself, sacrificed my body and soul multiple times, pledged myself to her cause, bled with her. And all this guy had to do was show up??" Sorry kitty. Two words: Friend zoned.

Most of all though was his amnesia. I am currently writing a science-fiction-ish story and my MC suffers from retrograde amnesia as well, and for similar reasons (subconscious protecting the heart from past traumatic events). I just find it really crazy all the coincidences I keep running into when it comes to writing it.

At leas the Ifrit vs. Ifrit could have been a controllable part instead of a cutscene.

Playing as other characters during solo duty is not new to this game.

It was as long as it needed to be. You got a nice mount from it. Even that was more than I was expecting.

16 has this weird cult of hatred mostly from older final fantasy fans who believe that 16 “abandoned” old fans by being a dark, gritty European fantasy and having action combat rather than what you’d expect from the single digit final fantasy titles

Now it’s fair to say it’s easily the biggest tonal departure from an FF game (except maybe type 0) but it’s still a fantastic title in its own right. It nails its themes, Clive is in contention for best protagonist along with titans like cloud and squall and it’s one of the most beautiful games that’s ever been released

This isn’t to say it’s flawless. It struggles with exploration, a lot of its side quests feel very MMO’y and it underdevelops some side characters. It also tonally shifts half way through though that’s more divisive. People who like JRPG’s tend to favour the change while people attracted to the game via its GOT influence probably say it was a change for the worse (I personally think it was for the worse)

It’s an easy 8.5/10 for your average player if you go into it unbiased and just experience it as a game. If you go in expecting a single digit FF experience expect a 2/10 game because it’s the furthest FF has ever deviated from the single digit formula

Nah they're right. XVI is very shallow, and all the GoT influence is only skin-deep. It's the second lowest selling mainline entry so far and failed to sell PS5s for a reason.

They were just channeling the spirit of XVI.

The event being disappointing means they nailed it.

That's what 90% of events are in this game, OP. An hour long walking simulator ending in a solo duty if you're lucky. Once in a blue moon we'll get something that inspires people to play the game together, like a moogle event or maybe a yokai watch type thing, but those are fairly rare, once-a-year type things because god forbid we have a long lasting event with replayability that encourages playing the game with each other.

At least this one gave a nice reward.

It's a bad game for several reasons, I'll list some here:
Firstly it's not an ARPG it's a Character Action game wearing a RPG mask with the battle system being made from a DMC dev.

Stats have no real meaning after every single boss you get a weapon upgrade handed to you not really any meaning behind gear it's all just damage stat stick.
Magic damage is basically just shoot Dante's gun, for example, I hit a bomb with fire it damaged the bomb. The other downside to the combat is, Although it's a Character Action game, it faintly trying to masquerade as an ARPG causes it to fail to be a good Character action game as well, you unlock titan block and garuda claw very early on, from that point in the game everything is just braindead.

Then let's get onto the fact that your basically just teleported back to the hub after every boss fight, it's the most corridor a FF has ever been.

Finally the abomination that is the plot. I have no issue with the "dark" theme. The issue is they ignore or contradict their own character development.

Spoiler ahead, although to be honest read on and save yourself hours of a terrible story.

Clive has an entire character story around him not taking the world on his own shoulders, learning to rely on his friends etc. Has a massive moment with his love interest right before the final mission in which he agrees to let them help him and not go it alone, then immediately leaves them all behind and goes on a suicide mission, cause yeah don't think about it.

Omega, Basically a god, created humans, waited millennia for a human to be born able to contain his power without dying, he determines through a test that this is Clive, it's the entire driving point of the game. Last 5m of the game after takes his power he literally says. O I guess he was wrong and I can't handle it, then basically dies............

Mid, Her entire story was that she wanted to bring tech to people so they wouldn't rely on magic. Just before the game ends she is functionally at what will be the new world government, she functionally with her team created the equivalent of a steam or jet engine. The post credits show a world a few hundred years after the ending, the people are wearing hempen clothes and have a tech age somewhere around the 14th century. Several hundred years after the invention of the jet engine..........

So yeah it's not just old fans who believe ff16 abandoned them, it's empirically a BAD game, the story is terrible, the combat is shallow.

Generally belongs at about a 4/10

Eh, I took XVI at face value and have had fun with it. (I say this, currently stuck on the DPS check on the Leviathan DLC. Yes, there's a proper DPS check on one fight. I came back under leveled and rusty after 9 months, I need to retool my kit and try again tonight. It was good maintenance filler last night, at least.)

As for the event, I also got everything I wanted out of it: Clive's outfit, Torgal mount, Torgal minion, and Clive getting a taste of a non-shitty life for a few brief hours. Poor boy has had a fairly miserable time in his 20s.

A 1-10 system does not mean a 4 is barely functioning. A 1-10 scale for bad or good means essentially the following

-1 Terrible game, does not function, crashes that do not get fixed, These Rarely come along, games have bad launches but generally bad crashes that make the game unplayable are fixed in a matter of days.
-2 Has major issues but doesn't crash
-3 Works but some features are not usable
-4 Features work but the game elements are not good or don't blend together, Bad story, shallow gameplay, poor art work etc, basically bad design not bad implementation
-5 Average, it's not a bad game it's not a good game, it doesn't crash just isn't really memorable in anyway.
-6 Good Game Good design, gameplay and story not the best but was fun. ( 6-7 are very subjective as we get away from actual provable issues and move into the personal taste of a game)
-7 Good Game Good design, gameplay and story not the best but was fun.

On no metric of 1-10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best, would a game like fallout76 be a 4, that's near the halfway point in what you expect a game to be, it would be a 2 maybe a 3.

You don't call a game good with incredibly shallow combat and inconsistent and contradictory storyline, with shallow gameplay elements like the examples given above around stats meaning nothing, magic meaning nothing aero, fire, thunder, stone all just coloured particle effects with no gameplay impact on which you use, just a filler for an incredibly bland 3 hit combo combat system.

You can't disagree with the spoiler interpretations because that wasn't an interpretation, that was exactly what happened in game. I didn't adlib I didn't claim something from my own head cannon, that's exactly what happened in game in the story. I would respect it if you said my opinion on the combat being shallow is just that, and opinion, but the comment I made about the story being trash is 100% factually accurate.

For example elemental magic not following the elemental wheel being bad is entirely a subjective opinion, the eikons all play different, the game design doesn’t work if you were pigeonholed into playing Garuda because it’s a fire enemy. My personal opinion is elemental interactions are superficial

I cannot look at your list and give 16 anything less than a 6 because it’s a complete package, the story barely contradicts (your only example is mid’s inventions which she specifically said she was locking away) and develops Clive well and the gameplay is fun if a little barebones

I had to do the event on 6 characters so I'm glad it wasn't very long and drawn out. Did it slowly first time and spammed skip cutscene for the alts. I loved how Ifrit looked, made me wish they would revamp old bosses to look better.

You clearly not discussing in good faith anymore by trying to twist things to your narrative. 6-7 is the spectrum of a good game where all the elements of the game are good and it's down to the individual on where they would place it. One could argue that the spectrum is actually closer to being a 6-9 on preference, but that doesn't change a thing about 16 being a 4

I will say again, I gave it a 4 because the Core Gameplay was subpar as in does not meet the standard of GOOD. The Story was terrible because it constantly contradicted character growth, ignored established story elements, making the entire plot a shambles. That's not preference that's not in my opinion that's what actually happened. If you wrote a story about a man who is blind, and then right after you have him sitting at the window saying, I love watching all the people walk by it's so nice to see. Well you would say, this story makes no sense, you just said that man is blind how come he can now see. That's the point I'm making about the story, it's not opinion it's just bad writing.

In isolation certain elements weren't terrible.
Combat - 5 in isolation although shallow, combat was responsive, the camera was bad but not to awful, the fights were far too easy but ultimately combat acceptable
Story - 2-3 As described in more detail before
Core Gameplay loop - 4 while not broken it's by no means good, gear is practically pointless just new upgrade handed to you after boss fight, no real stat build, no special effects just here's a new stick that does more damage. You're teleported back to hub town after every "Quest" sometimes teleported about multiple times during quests so you character is constantly just fade to black moved about the world losing all sense of grandeur.
Artwork - 6 Good graphics nothing animated or looked horrible

I personally can't take 16 seriously since it came with its own auto play/one button mode as an option. I'm sure it's wonderful for those with physical limitations (and I'm happy it's there for them) but it just reminds me of a cheap mobile game that encourages not using brain cells to get through content when it comes to people using it that don't have limitations/just want to use it to make the game less complicated.

I’m just gonna leave it here because you are functionally saying “this isn’t an opinion this is what happened” then proceed to state your opinion on the subject given you still haven’t actually provided reasonable examples of the story being a massive contradiction (I’m not asking you to I’m just saying you haven’t because the one you did was explained in the story you apparently didn’t read)

Where do I state my opinion on the story? So far you've called me wrong 3 times, but not once have you actually come up with a rebuttal about what I've said.

It was pretty bad tbh and really didn't get me interested in ff16. It was just a chore really to get the glam at the end that I won't even use. Kinda embarrassing compared to the pretty solid ff15 collaboration

They used to make events much longer and needed more work to get the rewards. People complained that it took too long. Made it too hard to get everything, especially if they wanted to get the stuff on multiple characters. Some people didn't give a jack about the story, and just wanted to get the stuff and be done.
So they made events shorter. If people are going to complain either way, might as well pick the option that takes less time and resources.

I'm trying to recall what events took noticeably longer than what we have now, all the way back to events like Lightning Strikes and the Dragon Quest X one back in 2014, and I'm drawing a blank. I suppose the FATEs gave them a bit of extra fluff but the story bits themselves were much the same.

I liked the quest a lot, but I wish that the duty had a permanent trial version, like Rathalos. It was a blast and I liked its pacing and animations, so it's a shame it was used exactly once.
