Clive's character model

It's likely been said before but I just got around to doing the crossover Clive's character model in the XVI cross over next to ours is just jarring. It reallyn shows how just ugly and cheap looking our character models are. If the graphics update takes us half way to the same level it will be amazing, but it shows that they can definately make better characters if they really want to, even with the current assets.

I am tempering my expectations, but if the graphical update comes with the same fidelity as the Clive model then I am going to be extremely pleased.

Idk, it didn't really look that great to me. Like an altered Highlander Female face #2 with the stubble midlander face. I mean, I guess it didn't look bad by any means, but idk. It looked like it drew from extant faces heavily.

It did pull on the some of the same assets but the textures were way better and there were differences in things like his brow, mouth, nose and eyes which made a huge difference. Just much better all around.

While this does demonstrate that a single character can be made with more detail, what it unfortunately doesn't demonstrate is that FF14 can support having player characters with that much detail. That's because at any given time, there's guaranteed to be only a single Clive on-screen. However, there can and often are a hundred different player characters on a screen. Because the limitation in graphics quality isn't due to not being able to create higher-fidelity assets (although there is certainly a cost to that) but rather hardware's ability to render assets while staying performant. More assets on screen uses up hardware's limited bandwidth, and similarly higher-fidelity assets use up that bandwidth as well. Thus, whether Clive levels of detail would or wouldn't overflow the budget for player character assets is uncertain.

Personally, I'm going in with low expectations. My best guess is that they gave Clive all that extra detail as a compromise because without it he either wouldn't look like Clive (because Clive was designed for a game with much more detail) or he'd look like a meaningfully bad version of Clive.

Clive's model just feels weird to me
I don't know if it's because of the contrast between models but it feels so HD it's funny, like when I first saw the sc a friend sent me of it I thought he was using a sculpt someone had made

Not that is bad, it's just that maybe it's *too* good it's rare

Honestly I would rather they just made a lower quality Clive, then knowing that they could do better but I am stuck playing the Warrior of Wishdotcom

I am actually happy with the character models we have, and I would be happy with just getting slightly less pixelly versions of some gear. I like the plainer textures on old gear over the high-detail ones we've had more recently, which tend to have so much detail up close that they just look like a mess from a distance, while the marks added for texture often don't dye properly and effectively make the item undyeable.

Think what you like, but I enjoyed XVI and Clive in his own game, and didn't mind his soap opera amnesia mini plot in this cross over event.

I’m gonna be honest I agree (though I think his model is good)

I adored 16 so much I headcanon my 14 character (Andreas) as a bearer who fled Valaesthia to escape slavery

I still think the collab story was pretty garbage because it showed off nothing about 16 because Clive didn’t remember anything

I hope Clive was a teaser for what's to come, honestly.

His hair was so high definition that I truly believe they didn't give as part of the event reward kit because how badly would clash - and possibly something on the tech end as well.

Said that, I hope his hairstyle either comes with the return of the event or is added as an expansion hairstyle, probably like WoL's hairbun will.

There is only so much the game can take.
MMOs by default don't have the greatest game models and cut corners where they can.

I think it could have been an example of what's to come, HOWEVER, you have to keep in mind that everything around it was NOT improved. When we get to DT, it will not look out of place because everything will be improved around it (with the exception of some old areas that will be added slowly over time). And by everything, that will include game lighting and shaders. So anything that looked fake or plastic about his model right now could be greatly improved by the new lighting and shaders that will be present with the FULL update come DT.

In short: It was a sneak peak, not a full preview.

this is probably because they were made with the extra dye channel in mind. hopefully.

I mean they're already doing a graphics update, no real reason to complain about anything.

Unless they intend to make us spend both dye slots just to ensure a single surface dyes in its entirety, I doubt it.

I'm talking about things dyeing blotchily where they once would have been a solid colour. Any "high detail" shading or scuffs generally do not take on the dye colour and instead turn grey.

A few particular examples I can recall are the Exarchic armour (pieces where the metal dyes), Radiant armour, Panthean armour (dyeable metal) and for a cloth example, the male Viera starting gear where everything has an ugly grey overlay to all the details.

Maybe the graphics update will fix these things. I certainly hope so. But for now, it looks awful and if the graphics update just adds the same issue to gear that is currently free of it, I will be extremely disappointed.

XVI ifrit model was great too. When our ifrit transformed into XVI ifrit I laughed, it was literally a crying cheems to a buff doge transformation.

You know what Clive's model reminded me of? XII's character models (especially in the more recently released version of Zodiac Age), in a good way. (◉‿◉)
