The Plight of Duty Roulettes

If you . . .

. . . play DPS, then:
1. your tank will be slow and pull 1 thing at a time
2. your healer will be oblivious

. . . play healer, then:
1. your tank will never use AoE attacks to aggro enemies, so they charge at you instead
2. your DPS will stand in every enemy AoE

. . . play tank, then:
1. your healer will only cast Cure 1 and stand there doing nothing in-between casts
2. your DPS will not know 90% of their abilities and will deal less DPS than you


The fundamental laws of MMOs, as inviolable as the laws of physics! ;)

Also, roulettes have a really bad retention rate in general. If you did them every day for a month by the next one, you'd rather do anything else. It's like gearing on a casual level takes way too long that by the time I am geared, I want to unsubscribe from the fatigue of it all. It's cheap consumable content. I don't remember the good groups and gripe about the bad ones. It as a system is stale. It has been for years. It was stale when it came out, let's be honest. You can only play Wrath of the Lich King of fantasy for so many years before you want off the ride. I don't even gear anymore. I one and done and unsubscribe. Something has to give.

TBH the single-pulling tank is the worst thing that can happen in a dungeon - just painful to experience.

I used to not mind them, but over ten years of this is enough for me. I find myself playing and being subscribed less and less. Even this new event I logged in did the event logged off and unsubscribed. Obviously, I'm still interested in the game, and I try to keep up with it, but I'm kinda done grinding tomestones.

my mileage has varied with roulettes, but I mainly heal

its been slow for content, so people tend to pick up jobs they arent fond of or rarely play, which is why you often get less than ideal tanks, dps or healers.

never really have any problems, but then, I dont go in with expectations either

That's why I do mine with friends.

You need to pug more dungeons, because it definitely isn't.

I like wall-to-wall pull as much as the next Dyskrasia-spamming Sage, but occasionally getting a new tank who pulls small is a nice change in pace. I just relax and go with it.

Fixed this for you:

If you...

Play DPS ...
... then you have the easiest role in the game. You just run after the tank and hit things, and if you mess up the healer should look after you, so chill out and enjoy the ride.

Play healer ...
... then it's nice when the tank asks if they can do big pulls and the DPS at least try to avoid mechanics. Just use all the buttons and remember your ABC.

Play tank ...
... then you should certainly use AOEs to keep aggro, but one mob at a time is just fine. Don't feel pressured into speeding up if you don't want to.

In all honesty my experience of 5 years of roulettes on EU, JP and OCE has been pretty relaxed anyway, so if any new players are reading this please don't be put off by all the negative posts in the forums about not being good enough. As long as you're being polite and trying your best you're doing an awesome job.

SE's solution to all those plight: create EW WAR.

Da one man army! Now the rest of the party can afk to have their dinner while the WAR c##k them out of their roles.

The roulettes just aren't rewarding enough for folks to really stick themselves in there more than is absolutely necessary.

I only do them if and when I have something to level, and even then it's only until I get to 71 and can do literally ANYTHING else (Bozja, Trusts, etc).

And I feel like it's unique to this game, where I feel that way. Rift? Did em all day long. WoW? Don't think I spent any time OUTSIDE the queue.

But those games had a lot more flexibility. Your healer lost connection and you're waiting for one to replenish? Oh yea I have a healer spec, I don't do it often but for this one dungeon so we can move along, yea lets roll. Want to double check something in my FC board or see who's online? No worries, you aren't locked out of any panels for arbitrary reasons of "socialize in the dungeon" or whatever stupidity SE implemented that for.

So no, I really, really, really don't want to roll the dice on dungeons here, unless I have to.

And that's even setting aside how brain-dead and dumbed down SE has made so many of the earlier ones, taking out the interesting mechanics because... I guess... folks couldn't do dimension doors or something. So it's either 123 brain dead patchwerk fights or telegraph LITERALLY THE WHOLE FLOOR and dance in and out of the clear spots in half a minute intervals.

I really hope that Dawntrail is something... different.

i dont think i've ever really had an healer who didnt heal because he dps'ed too much. (well, aside from a few new healers who got tunnelvision, but thats alright they have to learn too. better than just standing around) and i play this game a lot. just because they wait til its efficient to heal, doesnt mean they forget to heal because of dmg.
complain when you're dead. 5% life is still alive

'oh no an auto-attack hit me... again... only 95% life left. healer you have to heal me... 90%, why do you only do dmg? i'm soon gonna be dead. again a healer who forgets to heal me because of dealing dmg' *uses clemenz to heal at 90%*

Whenever I heal, I have a pretty high chance of getting tanks who either single pull (leaving me to just idly spam attack spells most of the time), or tanks who don't use CDs (forcing me to spam heals to keep them off the floor). Sometimes I get a tank who does both to make it an even more awkward combination of stressful and boring.

Whenever I tank.......I'm probably on WAR, so unga bunga kiddos, I'm gonna finish this dungeon with or without you. But it'll go faster if you help out.

Whenever I DPS, I just go with the flow, because if I wanted something else, I had the option to take responsibility for it.

If I didn't get lousy players in my roulettes, I wouldn't have fun stories to tell. Just today I got Titan Extreme in mentor roulette as Summoner and spent the entire time ressing the healers as they took turns being knocked off by Landslides and Upheavels.

Well I mean the tank doesn’t need the healer anyway so why bother actually healing, you are just wasting button presses

TANKS:
⯩The no cd tanks
⯩No-AOE and Tanks who toggle their [tank stance] on/off all the time(in combat, in dungeons).
⯩Only use midigation when they fall below x%.
⯩Use all def cds at once and have zero cds after the 40s mark.
⯩Dosn't use def cds when TB.
⯩The 8+ vul stacks tanks, who eats all dmg - dosnt bother to dodgde/avoid.
⯩The Boss-spinners, no swappers and stackmark -clevers.

HEALERS
⯩POP all heal cds at once.
⯩Constantly overwrite/overheal their co-healers heals.. Like useing direct heals when hots is active.
⯩Ineffective healers; better known as cure 1 / medica II spammers.
(only uses weakest heals, only uses like 2-3 types of heals / dosn't use cds / ogcds)
⯩No dps healers; healers who will just wait around until they see somone who drops down to 1%...
⯩DPS-ONLY-Healer, who refuse to use any global heals,ress,esuna, and push all healer responsibility on their co-healer
(prioritize their own dmg over keeping their party alive).

DPS:
⯩Who stands in front of bosses, gets hit by cleves / TBs.
⯩DNC and BRDS not dancing, playing songs.
⯩DPS who only uses 1-3 abilties , and make fights last forever...
⯩The dps who dosnt dodge/avoid mech - they spend more time dead on the ground than alive.
⯩DPS who dosn't use AOE ( when they have aoe).

Note: Some of these are common mistake new players makes too ,
but new players are forgiven - they dont know better..

Probably an unpopular opinion since most of mine are, but about the only time the crystal tower alliance raids are entertaining is when half the party doesn't know what they're doing.

This is rarely the case for me. My roulettes tend to go like this.

As healer: "I hope I don't get a WAR tank so I can actually do some healing." Annnnnnnd.... of course... A WAR tank. Here comes that one button ST/AoE spam everyone dreads.

As DPS: "At last, time to fight to boss. I can practice my mid-fight rotation during it's more interesting mech.... ah, schite! It's dead already??"

As tank: "OMG, I DoNT kNoW WHat IM DoINg!!"

Haven’t had (too) much annoyance with roulettes since I came back except the leveling one.

Why. Do. I. Always. Get. Ifrit.

It’s a trial in the dungeon queue and it saps up all that sweet sweet experience I should be getting besides the bonus.

I'll trade you your Ifrits for my Sunken Temple of Qarn. Seriously, six days in a row on two characters, what the hell.

i completely agree. not just in crystal tower though. in any a-raid. these are actually the moments i have the most fun in this game. between dungeons where barely anything matters and savage with its stale high-precision mechanics

This is a reason I often tank. Tried expert roulette once as a DPS and they pulled 1 pack at a time. I think maybe Saint Moccianne’s Arboretum was current then. I was so bored as a MNK. Plus the queue times then.

I love that dungeon! The HM version as well.

My leveling roulette is a mixed bag for sure. I can't really say I get any specific duty repeatedly.

I liked it better when people actually did the scales. Now everyone just runs by and ignores it, since mobs don't give EXP and the gear is outdated too fast to matter.

There are tanks who cant handle a wall to wall pull. As in even with def cds rolling they get face smashed so hard, the healer has to dedicate themselves to healing them. Has happen to me quite a few times over years of playing 14. A good tank will no doubt see their hp falling faster then a brick off a 10 story building and ease up a little.

The weird thing about this is that it so rarely happens EXCEPT in 5/6/7/8 roulette. If I queue into that roulette, it's almost 100% chance the tank will single pull. In the rare instances where I want to do that roulette for something, I've just started tanking them myself. But I cannot remember the last time I got a single puller anywhere but 5/6/7/8 roulette.

This is dangerously too relatable

When I tank, it's always W2W and, if healer is a Curebot, I tell them to, please, use damage spells. If they give attitude at the mere suggestion, it's harrassment. The only reason I've ever been forced to W2W are those runs where the healer didn't bother gearing up with the essential stuff (i.e. healers with no accesories in ARR).

When I heal, it's always W2W because, if tank doesn't have the guts to do the deed, I'll do it for them. It's my job to keep the tank alive and the only thing the tank has to do is keep aggro, DPS and throw mitigations so, when it comes down, I am the one who actually keeps track of how many pulls can we handle.

When I DPS, it's always W2W because, if tanks or healers can't bring themselves to do so, I'll have to show them they can do so for like, 95% of the dungeons, and having them actually handle bigger pulls is the fastest way they'll realize there is no point in doing single pulls in anything other than, perhaps, Stone Vigil or Aurum Vale.

Had you asked me several years ago, my answer would've been the opposite but, after grinding so many Mentor Roulettes, I've grown to realize that coddling players is the very last thing that should be done. If someone messes up, that's okay but, at the very least, let it not be for lack of actually trying. I'm done passively accepting mediocrity and laziness.

God yes. To this entire post.

Setting up the instance servers so you can't see your social windows or whisper people from inside them was one of the many, many bad choices they made with this game.

Whats really gotten to me lately is other Scholars either using Stratagem late or overwriting it.
