The game might be good but the community is straight up horrible .anything post arr and people are bitchy about anything
This is extremely vague. What are you referring to?
People are human and you get all sorts of behaviours and dramas that you would normally expect from humans, but overall, my interactions with people are pleasant on a daily basis...
My initial assumption was that this was over people complaining about current content in the game, but there is plenty to criticize about ARR too so I'm not sure I follow.
If it's about the community being toxic, I can only go off with my own experiences and generally everyone has been nice - though there are the few times that stand out where people are being outright mean and hateful.
I find the lack of details in here suspect.
you should try runescape
toxic positivity is still toxic... and no its not positiv at all
I find your lack of faith... disturbing.
If you mean Reddit Yes. Don't you dare think the story is mediocre.

Ah, you complained about the world's friendliest and most positive game community of all time? For shame, you toxic troll. You see, unlike World of Warcraft, FFXIV is super duper welcoming to all players (as long as you comply with our demands). Unlike WoW, we will never kick you from a dungeon (unless two of the players are married). And unlike that horrendous demonic ghoulish torture game World of Warcraft, we do NOT have officially state-mandated DPS meters (we have third-party ones instead). And unlike that Guantanamo Bay waterboarding simulator known as Dragonflight, we do NOT require add-ons! Unless you roleplay, or do ultimates, or world first, or anything else in party finder. So I kindly suggest that you move on from your infatuation with that insidious gas chamber known as World of Warcraft right now, because whether you like it or not, FFXIV is way better than your game.
Another Bobby Kotick agent has been neutralized, good work everyone. Mods? Take him away.
Oh dears. This agains. Mao played many MANY MMOs over years and one thing Mao can say is that ALL of thems has their fair share of bad peoples and good peoples. Mao sees FFXIV as being no differents in that regard. Maybe just try ignore bad peoples and make friends with good peoples?
The FFXIV community literally beat me up, stole my wallet and then stole my kidney and undersold my kidney on the marketboard
There is definitely a rabid subsection of this community that acts like enjoying final fantasy 14 is some kind of lifestyle choice or something. These people would win a gold medal in mental gymnastics; you should see how they defend a monthly subscription game that updates less than some free to play games. There are things I enjoy about this game, too. Otherwise I wouldn't still be here. But I'm willing to admit that this game has flaws, and to these people that kind of admittance is like a crime or something. They're here in abundance; you can see them whenever you make a thread just suggesting a minor quality of life adjustment and they pull up to tell you why that's impossible for square to do, as if they know any more about the development process than we do. As if they can speak as an authority on the subject. It's comical.
In game there manages to be a special kind of toxicity as well. Weaponized reporting reigns supreme here. God forbid you upset someone enough to wield this against you. Even though the game has a profanity filter that's ON by default, you can actually make the conscious effort to turn it OFF, get offended when you witness profanity, and then report someone for it. And a GM will take your side! How dare an adult in a game full of naughty words say those naughty words that you have the option to remove with a single click! Don't you worry, we'll take care of him. Of course, this leads to abuse. People who were never offended to begin with will simply pretend to be, in order to wield the draconian terms of service against people they have beef with. This just happened to a JP user. He took a totally SFW picture of his male character and put it on twitter, but HOLY SMOKES you could see a nipple, which meant he was using (gasp, the horror) visual modifications that don't affect his gameplay or give him an edge over anyone. This was probably the second most harmless form of 3rd party tools imaginable (the first being reshade or something), so naturally people who already hated this guy anyway pounced on it, mobilized a squad to mass report him, and got his account in hot water until he apologized publicly for daring to have a nipple. Great community! Hell, there was a thread here where someone got reported for their in game name and made a thread about it. What did the good people here do? Threaten to report him as well! And let's be real; nobody living their day to day lives here was actually pearl clutching over a weird name. They just didn't like OP, or disagreed with him on some level, and weaponized the report system against him for a laugh. This is the kind of person who's emboldened in this game.
My last MMO was bdo and that community was outwardly toxic, but at least you knew where you stood with people in bdo because they'd insult you to your face. XIV is full of sneaky rat snitches. When they show you who they really are, you should thank them, and then never ever associate with them.
Details are lacking which makes me think there's some omitted info here.
Now if I want to take this at face value, then I disagree. The community isn't great for sure, but calling it the worst is a bit of a stretch.
I see this claim put around that people are "unwilling to accept there are flaws", but it's just not true. There are things that everyone, almost universally accepts is a problem.
For example, a reasonable person cannot look at a story that spans the base game, 5 expansions and all their patches and say that it isn't a daunting climb for many players.
A reasonable person can't say that ARR isn't off-putting in some ways with issues such as no mounts until half way into the MSQ, needing to return to the Waking Sands every 5 seconds, item level creep making fight mechanics irrelevant, excessive loading screens compared to expansions, excessive unlock quests for every little thing (like glamour), a non-intuitive map that is only usable when you get used to it, poor default setting choices and HUD Layout compared to some MMORPGs, forced cutscenes out of the blue at level 50, lack of voice acting and inconsistent voice acting in ARR, driving sprouts head-first into high-end Extreme trials to "clear it for the quest" resulting in mentors being dragged into them, lack of experience gain from patch quests that makes progression feel too slow (for players who don't know we had patches).
In places like the novice network you will often see constant defense of the game but on points like the ones above, nobody defends all of that and just has to reluctantly tell them it's one of the issues the game has.
But everyone just throws the "nobody criticises the game" card because someone disagrees with their criticism.
For myself, it's usually not about why it's impossible, but about why SE says it's impossible. I have a pretty good memory for the countless interviews I've read over the years so I just reference that and reiterate what they've said, regardless of its merit. But in most cases they probably would not say "it's difficult" if it wasn't difficult for them.Quote:

However I do have quite a good understanding of this stuff as well so to a degree I can contribute my own assessment of if something would be possible and what the likely issues would be (for example my assessment of DC travel being possible was accurate before we got it, which I pointed out we had with paid transfers as well as infrastructure for it from world visiting and I also pointed out the UI team's claim that a checkmark on collected items was impossible, was just wrong and then they subsequently proved that assessment right by adding it).
I find that bizarre. These people don't represent me or anyone I've ever met or talked to in the community. There's always going to be that weirdo that does something like that on the internet I guess, but they certainly don't represent a whole community of people.
xiv has absolutely become a hellhole of shitty fandom people who, if they don't agree with you, will do their best to make your life a living hell.
bait or not, i agree with op.
This community is as toxic as any other.
Telling about how other communities are also/more toxic, doesn't justify the toxicity in this game lol..
It's called the online disinhibition effect. Plenty of people, given any degree of anonymity and lack of consequences, will gladly show their worst sides. It has nothing to do with fandoms or games. Some people are just awful.
But, y'know, pinning it on a specific community makes for better bait.
I be happy if you do not assume things with my words.
Even I realize that it doesn't only happen only there.
But even respectable streamers/YT content makers get a sharp increase of harassment when mentioning XIV in a non-positive light, satire or not
Hey, but thanks for the subtle insult.
The community I met when I first started wasn't the worst, but I think it's easier to meet people in XIV who hide their shitty side more consistently then others would in other communities. Personally I prefer when people are direct, and more straight up with me when it comes to how they are and who they are. In XIV I have to play the game of *is this person lowkey weird af* when meeting new people.
That being said I've met my fair share of oddballs and individuals who could do with therapy over being in a game. The problem, at least from what I've experienced and have seen, is that a lot of people in XIV excuse behiviors and red flags fairly often and are in some cases too hopeful, conversely I've also met people so weary they aren't willing to look beyond initial interactions and just brush off anything they deem unfit.
Moral of the story, humans are complex, yes, but XIV is very special in how you the individual will have to deal with the nonsense this community will throw at you. Good ol Toxic Positivity and all that.
Most people suck, hence that’s why communities mostly suck too. XIV is no different. When you find people you like, keep them close. That’s all there’s to it.
Two completely different eras. The game was populated by normal MMO players back in ARR/HW, many of whom migrated from FFXI, of which XIV still had somewhat similar elements to. Everything was still relatively humble at the time. Considering the vast majority of players are in their 20s and that was 10 years ago, it's no surprise most of them gradually moved on and got replaced.
The people spamming buzzwords like "toxic" when you ask why they're only pressing one button are this latter generation. This also ties into other recent anomalies, such as all the various complaints about the game being too easy and stale, the influx of wacky dance emotes and cutesy loporrit cutscenes, the banal streamers and "content creators", the heckin' memes and fanart, the ERP epidemic, the WoW whinging, and the existence of Discord. Most of this shifted in ShB/EW.
What other online multi-player games have you been playing that makes you think this is the worst?
What specifically have you witnessed in this game to make you think that the community is the worst?
That definitely does not match my personal experience in 18 years of playing online multi-player games. Any player community has its problem elements but this one also has some positive elements that were totally lacking in other games I've played.
I haven't really experienced any issues in the actual game. Worst I've had in recent memory was someone being a bit sour and passive-aggressive (1 comment) over someone taking too long to roll for an orchestrion roll in, uhh.. O3N? If I recall.
You mean the Players? or the Community?
I would argue this is one of the better communities out there because of its rules, the active enforcement of the rules, and how the developers and organizers keep the community engaged outside and inside of the game world.
Players can be truly toxic regardless of the game or place we find them in, what matters is how theses players are dealt with and the system that is used to repermained them. Is it perfect? no, far from it, but at least we have a system.
But as for the OP, i would suggest that if you do run into people giving you problems or issues; depending on the severity of the issue- to consider making use of the report function in-game.
I don't know if the question/comment the OP poised is genuine or sincere, but i personally will die on this hill that the FFXIV community is the best community in mmorpg gaming; at least from my personal experience.
it isn't that bad.
Bold bit is a bit of a stretch if we're gonna be real considering how many people get stalked without any form of help from the staff. They're on point with stopping people from helping others in dungeons though and scaring people into not wanting to speak because of that.
I keep seeing this, but I help people in dungeons all the time and I've never heard from a GM about it. Of course, most of the people complaining about it have a hostile or insulting tone while complaining, so I don't think it's the helping part that's actually getting reported.
Eden Tier 2, Casually was lvling my SCH, told a guy about how they should use rampart and TBN during pulls, said it in the nicest way possible as the 3 mobs per pack were nuking them, literally. I was a tank main that tier and was oh snap neat a new DRK, and their BRD friend got so pissy with me, I dropped it cuz I just laugh at white knights like that and got a warning from a gm. I have no reason to lie if I was nice or not as I have zero problems telling people their idiots in this game, but that situation really made me not wanna help a lot of new players when I saw em after that.
