Can't Continue, Not what I was Hoping

As someone who has played many MMORPGs and recently chose FF14 over years of Guildwars 2, I can say there are really no great MMOs out there right not. I'm dropping my FF14 subscription because I can't sit through the long battle sequences and cut scenes, just to get caught by some one hit kill Boss move, which you can't avoid because you don't know the mechanics.

That's one of the worst things you can do as a developer when it comes to Boss battles... One hit kills.

As Humans, we are not CPUs. We have to see something, think and then react and that's only if what we see is comprehensive to begin with. As developers, it's easy to put something in and think it's ok but that's because you're the one creating the mechanics and know it already. To someone seeing it for the first time, it's a different story, which is why you don't do one hit kills to begin with. You have to allow for Human Error!

This is why players end up blaming other players like Healers when the party gets whiped. They never consider the fact, the Healer has to dodge the same unknown mechanics, all while trying to keep an eye on players health and trying to do both, is almost impossible, which is in itself a developer design flaw for Healers.

Having NPCs for all dungeons would have been a HUGE help because it would have allowed players to learn by doing it over and over and then later run with Humans once they had the mechanics down perfect. That's a boring thing to do but with a game designed as such, you don't have a choice because watching video is just as bad and you should never have to watch a video in order to do a Boss battle.

Being honest, if it weren't for the server-side PvP/WvW cheating of Guildwars 2, that would be the best MMORPG on the market right now. GW2 does not force dungeons. You're free to engage or not engage all content in the game. GW2 is not big on one hit kills either, so it's a lot more casual when fighting a Boss than anything in FF14. If it weren't for the "Devs" allowing their friends, bfs, gfs and family to run around in WvW in God Mode blowing away players with attributes and strengths you can not obtain on any class, I would still be playing it right now and would have never bought the entire game of FF14, expansions and all. GW2 want's you to sink money in the game and have fun at your expense by killing the crap out of you in WvW and after playing all classes and builds for years, it's so easy to spot what's possible and what's not possible in GW2's pvp.

Seriously, for something baring the name Final Fantasy, I am deeply disappointed for I am a Final Fantasy fan, with FF7, 8, 9 and 10 being my favorite FF games.

At this point, I am left without and MMO to play.... (sigh)

Because right now FFXIV is the easiest game in the market right now.

I'm retired and have suffered two strokes, my mental accuity and reaction time is down by a tremendous amount, and even I don't complain about this. While I agree that some of the mechanics aren't intuitive, but once you know how they work, they're easy. I'll give you an example. One boss in Tower of Babil puts these little red bubbles on you. Your first reaction will probably be to isolate yourself from your team mates. Actually, you're supposed to stop attacking and stand still to avoid damage. This game is leaps and bounds ahead of others with it telegraphs, but it isn't perfect. Don't let the nice orange cones and circles lull you into complacency. If you're unsure about a boss's mechanics, look them up. Or, if like me, and you have a physical limitation, tell your party before-hand so the tank and healer can adjust their pulls and rescues for you.

The sheer amount of visual effects (aoe markers, stack markers, status effects, environmental factors, etc.) that happen within boss fights are more than enough to let one figure out what a mechanic does. If you die you just go back and fight again with a bit more knowledge than before. Seriously, the mechanics and visual markers build up to where you can guess most patterns or abilities. Yeah, there are niche mechanics certain bosses have but even then you can pretty easily figure them out.

Your argument that ff is bad because of OHKO boss attacks is rather foolish because the game is so dang easy that most OHKO abilities are telegraphed way in advance to give players ample amount of time to avoid/mitigate it. And if all else fails and you're still stuck at a mechanic - ask someone for help or google it. Many times it boils down to: 1) update gear for dps checks 2) don't ignore the mechanic(s).

You can get around the character limit by editing your post once you've posted it. Not that I thinking you'll reply to this as many who make very vague remarks about I don't enjoy blank remarks and that they are leaving threads tend to not come back. But I wonder what kind of one hit kills you are talking about. Or what you might think are one hit kills. If you die and aren't sure why or how you should ask questions. There's also no reason to need to have to watch a video before a regular dungeon, trial, or raid that's not savage or ultimate. At least if it's not within the first few weeks of somethings release. You also don't have to do any side content in XIV if you don't want to. I'm not sure what you think is side content that you're being forced to do as there's only two things I can think of. Four if you count each hard fight of Titan, Garuda and Ifrit as a separate thing and don't combine them.

There is definetly some criticism here regarding one shot mechanics or instant kill mechanics that I can get behind, but more so in reference to specific pockets of the game. Otherwise, you're handed more than enough tools to learn fights as you go. Mileage will vary depending on what class you're playing. It'd be easier to learn and observe on a ranged class, imo, versus something like a MNK or DRG.

As per the cutscenes - if you don't enjoy the story then I don't really get why you'd be that interested in playing. In some parts, I think the narrative of FFXIV easily exceeds a lot of main line Final Fantasy games.

Other than Doom mechanics (which anyone who has played a Final Fantasy should know how they work already) and falling off platforms, I can't recall there being exactly any mechanics that were dodge or die during the leveling process. At several duties, there isn't even Vuln stacks for failing mechanics. So what you're telling me is a bit hard to believe.

Sorry, but FF14 is the easiest game in the market, besides some Pay2win-Whale-attractor-F2P-games. And onehit mechanics are very very rare in this game as long as you do not play savage raids.

The game becomes a lot easier when you realize most AoEs and one-hit kill mechanics give you a lot of grace. In most instances the moment the orange aoe indicator disappears is the moment its safe, even when the actual graphics of said attack are still going. You're also given a solid 1-2 seconds to escape an aoe even after the indicator is gone because the metcode (as miserable as it is) assumes everyone is playing with at least 150-300ms of lag.

Additionally you don't always need to be super safe and far away from everything because your hitbox is a tiny dot between your feet. Hit F1 on the keyboard to target yourself ad you'll see a dot in the middle of the circle — that's your hitbox. You can test this by going to a jump puzzle or even an edge of a small cliff, target yourself and nudge your character toward the edge and you'll see that your character's hitbox allows you to essentially float off the ground.

So that tiny little sliver of a safe spot in an aoe? Its safe.

OOP! Yeah. Dumb robots all look alike.

The problem I had with gw2 dungeons is that no one wanted to run them which was pretty disappointing. The PvE aspect of the game from my experience were only fractals or open world events which are fun don't get me wrong, but it would've been nice to explore all the old dungeons and their different paths you could take. I love WvW though, I so want to get Warbringer.

That aside, I don't recall many instant death mechanics in this game. I know Doom exists, and you can usually esuna it or get your health fully healed to remove it, but other than that I can't think of anything. There are probably more than I realize, because as I am typing this I remembered one of the later bosses hits you with either a red or blue laser and you have to alternate the color you get hit by and same for some other bosses

DPS and healers are just normally squishy so they can't take a lot of hits

There is room for human error even with one-hit kills. Battle Resurrection. Some games don't allow or limit Battle Resurrection to a specific number. This game allows as many as can be cast before those with a resurrection skill run out of mana.

Don't be afraid of death in a game that has no long lasting penalty for death. Take it for the learning experience that it is.

Many of us don't have issues dodging those mechanics while trying to heal the rest of the party even when we're new to the fight. It's because we've learned from experience over time. We know what to expect. Give yourself a chance to gain that experience as well. Or perhaps try a job in a different role. Not everyone enjoys the healing role in MMORPGs.

I'm also curious where you are having problems with one-hit kill mechanics since those are generally limited to more difficult end game content (including end game of previous expansions). Is it possible that you're being killed by something because you're severely undergeared for the content?

You know yourself and what you like best. If the game's not right for you, then it's not right for you. Have fun in what you do play, whether it's FFXIV or something else.

Part of the reason for that is that dungeons in GW2 are abandoned content.
Aside from adding one new path to Twilight Arbor they never expanded on dungeons or bothered to fix longstanding bugs with them, instead moving their focus to fractals and strikes.
Dungeons can be some of the buggiest, cheesiest content you do in GW2 depending on your party.
The coup de grace was Arenanet unifying the dungeon currencies so now everybody mostly runs whichever dungeon path is the quickest, most painless source of tokens when they need to buy something with them, otherwise dungeons are pretty dead when there isn't a (new) collection that requires a specific dungeon path.
Occasionally you will see people recruiting to run dungeons just for fun or to unlock the dungeon vendors for a new account but it's a rare thing.
At least they reworked Arah story mode so you can run it solo to complete the base game's personal story. As lackluster as the final confrontation may feel.

Pretty much everything else you can do is designed to stay relevant or profitable in some way or another so I can see why dungeons died off unless you need to do them for something specific or manage to recruit people in it for the novelty.
Raids, while another form of content they stopped developing, stay relevant by being generally profitable and being one path to legendary armor, a benefit dungeons in general lack.

It's free-ish. Never hurts to pop back in and see how things changed. Just don't commit to any purchases before you know you want to continue playing.
As someone who plays GW2 off and on since its Beta it's a very different game now.
A lot of things have changed from the state it was in at launch but the base game still remains the worst part of the game, it's essentially all a long tutorial with the fun new systems locked behind expansions because that's one way they make money.
If you do commit, mounts are a complete game-changer.
Content that requires it now supports the holy trinity they initially tried to avoid.
Expansion content generally is a step up in difficulty, though not as steep as it was when Heart of Thorns had just released.
They figured out a way to bring Living World Season 1 content back.
The "MTX" shop and the lootboxes are the same as ever, though the latter now at least have a pity system of giving you a type of currency you can accrue to eventually buy old exclusive items.
Their release model has changed with them now doing annual "mini expansions" instead of the full fledged expansion packs they did before. We'll see how that shakes out for them, personally I'm still salty they completely gutted Runes to sell you a watered-down version of what they removed, locked behind a purchase of their first mini expansion.

Depends on gear and role. Maybe try picking a tank. Hardly anything 1hits in this game, especially in story content.

See cast bar or orange aoe. React within 3 seconds (which is ages). Isn't a problem normally.

I think you may have missed something somewhere. All MSQ dungeons can be done with NPCs. It's the Duty Support system.

Much like other Final Fantasy games, this game puts a huge focus on its story, something a lot of other MMORPGs don't do.

I have never seen a player get chastised for dying to any mechanic. Whether you're new or a veteran, stuff happens, you get ressed, and the fight continues. The best way to learn is through our mistakes, and if dying during a new encounter unacceptable to you, then perhaps a far easier game where it's impossible for fail would be more suitable.

I've seen plenty of new players die to doom because they didn't realize or notice fast enough that it can be removed by standing on the glowing tile. Next would be Titan and not moving out of Landslide fast enough. But honestly, it's not a big deal dying to something new.

I agree. It's a matter of getting used to something. I came from other mmos too and I needed to get used to mechanics here (like in every game). Here for example I struggled with aoe at first, because in some other mmos I used to stay on the aoe until the skill animation, here instead you need to move out before and when there is the animation it's already safe.

This too. In the past I had to deal with people thinking they were sergeants Hartman cosplay, but here is very calm imo. Just once a guy was a bit nevrous but didn't say anything wrong at the end of the day.

I honestly forgot sunken temple of qarn when I typed that but yeah I agree. It also doesn't help that in this game there are different ways to remove the Doom effect depending on the fight. Qarn, those platforms, which is similar to WoD, and then you have something like the hard version of wanderer's palace when you have to be fully healed in order for it to go away. Not to mention the times it can be cleansed.

I haven't seen many people get chastised for it as well, but I have heard stories of people being toxic if someone is dying repeatedly.
It really depends on who you get, as I've mostly had a positive experience with duties. People are chill.

Hope you find something that makes you happy.

I've been here almost 9 years, and have been playing MMO's for over 20 years. None have kept me in them as long as FFXIV has. And as a fan of Final Fantasy since 1987, this is by far my favorite. You can't please everyone. So good luck.
