Even if Green Mage isn't the caster, it should still happen

For all of Final Fantasy history, we have only known of White, Black, Red, and Blue Magic. Green Magic was an introduction in the series that is underutilized, and honestly it rings right off the tongue. Having a fifth "green" colored magic job with its own flare to how it uses magic, would be an incredible idea, and I hope even if it turns out to be just fan speculation, that we get it in a future expansion.

The job barely has an identity, but a few side games have dared to create it, and I think that the whole clover mage aesthetic is just down right lovely.

Green Mage/Green Magic originates from the Ivalice entries (FFXII, FF Tactics & spin-offs) and essentially is built around buffing allies (Protect, Shell, Bravery, Faith) and debuffing enemies (Blind, Silence, Sleep and Poison usually).

It technically makes more sense as a dedicated Healer job, however a support-oriented Caster (more-so than Red Mage) with both offensive and defensive effects could be created, with using damage built around status effects (DOT application, ripping DOTs out for spike damage, delayed damage although that's more of a Time Mage thing).

Regardless if Healer or Caster, Green Mage would definitely be a favourite of mine as a job hailing from the Ivalice series.

We may get something like a Green Mage, but the job will be named "Turtle"

I have a hard time picturing Green Mage in FF14 unfortunately, Haste a massive buff from them tends to be detrimental in 14, messing with folks rotaions. And debuffs aren't really a thing in ff14 beyond mitigation, in a similar vein to Blu.

woo, what about a Time Battlemage. Green + Time + crossbow!

I have been saying this for literally years, but Green Mage and Geomancer would synergize extremely well as a concept.

Green Mage is about support and has a hammer.

Geomancer is about areas of influence (again, support) and is very terrain/earth themed.

It seems logical to me that, especially if we are not getting Geomancer outright in FFXIV, a Green Mage that influences the terrain and surrounding allies/enemies by SMASHING THE GROUND WITH A MALLET is just good, synergistic design.

Plus, I really like the idea of Green Mage's weapon being the inverse of Red Mage's. Instead of having the focus at the hilt of a sharp weapon, it should be inside the head of a blunt object.

I think it would be a really cool roll. Buffing your party, while also poisoning enemies.

When the game adds a 5th and 9th, 10th party members and the role Support, taking a lot of the support from all other roles and giving them a more interesting diverse rotation.
Making a 4th role needed to meet up new requirements of combat and battle design like elementality, actual buffing/debuffing and this might as well be the place to put back the DoT into these classes.

I would even move existing classes into this role just as they don't have to release 3 new jobs.
Bard/Dancer and Scholar are perfect candidates. Green Mage perfectly could be the 3rd pick. And a XIV original? There you would have 3-4 picks for this role on release.

Make the color purple while at it too.

There are no purple stars.

Green Mage has so little presence in the franchise, I was really surprised by all this support it gets in the forums.

If it's actually Green Mage it'll most likely get the Sage treatment and be repurposed for this game with a different identity, Green Mage as most people know it doesn't really have a place in XIV and certainly not as a magical ranged DPS.

The fact that it's kind of a blank slate maybe adds to the excitement and support.

Double/ Triple, Haste, Slow, Stop etc. could be weaved in with attacks as well as having abilities like Scan (increase in crit/ guaranteed next shot crit), Reflect (generates a shield that unleashes an attack relating to the amount absorbed on expiration), Shell and so on. Green Magic has been around since like 1997 or thereabouts. It's hardly "new". It's just somewhat poorly defined and varies based on which game we're talking about, the origin being the Mystic/Oracle/Beowulf Jobs/Character from the OG FFTactics.

The main thing about is that it's a debuffer with a handful of buffs on the side. This is why I called Summoner "Green Caller" in FFXIV until 6.0, because it wasn't a Summoner, it was a Green Mage with a few simple Summons (Egis) on the side, sorta like FF9's Eiko being a White Caller or FF4's Rydia being a Black Caller. "<Color> Caller" is nomenclature that is kind of like how Red Mage is "low-to-mid level White Mage + low-to-mid level Black Mage" in older FF games, a <Color> Caller is "low-to-mid level <Color> Mage + low-to-mid level Summoner", and that's what "WoW Warlock with Final Fantasy skin" "Summoner" was.

So what would a Green Mage in FFXIV, considering we have cases like RDM and SGE that are, in various ways, not entirely true to their roots but were massaged (in the case of RDM) to outright made up completely separate from their history (in the case of SGE), look like?

Probably a DoT mage, if the Devs have decided to go back on hating DoTs (or have figured out some other way to code them). Utility debuffs are nice, but don't fit FFXIV's combat model outside of Eureka/Bozja/PotD/Criteron. It's unlikely it would be a healer, nor is there a precedent that "Support Jobs are Healers in FFXIV", as RDM is generally considered a support Job, and while it COULD have been a healer, it clearly is not. Likewise, Bard and Dancer are support buffer and debuffer, respectively, in other FF games, yet are DPSers here.

Honestly I think it would just be a green themed mage, and would probably have some of those classic spells, but tooled in a way that is balanced and fair. I.e. protect, and shell come back, but they are on cooldowns. Would be the opposite of Dancer in the way that Dancer gives you mostly attack buffs. Green Mage would focus on additives of defense. Could also potentially fill in the niche that Astrologian left behind when its cards got ruined.
