With the announcement of Viper, the weapon options for jobs are getting scarce

Every job in FFXIV is based around their weapon, and besides Scholar and Summoner who belong to the same base class, they don't really repeat. And with the announcement of Viper, we now have the double sword job. What are we missing?

These are the ones that I can think of:
- Sword and gun;
- Axe and shield;
- Double axes;
- Whip;
- Quarterstaff;
- Maybe curved swords

We can't have more guns because Machinists have all the guns and that includes the crossbow. Maces and mauls are usually skins of tank weapons, so they also don't count. We had card throwing jobs in previous FF games, but we already have Astro, I just wished they would actually throw the cards. So the only option besides the weapons I listed is to add wacky Bloodborne weapons such as the Sage one.

So speaking about wacking weapons, what would you like to see in future jobs? I personally would love a trapper/sapper job with a shovel as a weapon, so I can bonk my enemies with a shovel. I also like the idea of an umbrella for Geomancer and a syringe for Chemist. Maybe gunlance with a harpoon attached? What do you think?

Plus all the various sorts of swords and daggers and everything in between, only some of which are used in the game for now.

And a bunch more I haven't thought of.

I think it will take some time until we run out of weapons.

I still say they should add Chemist and make the "weapon" a backpack full of potions.

Weapons we could still get that are somewhat reasonable:

Doubling up on existing weapons in other roles like the arcanist books.

One handed axes dual wield; with off hand

Mace/Hammers one handed with off Hand; dual wielded, two handed.

Boomerang

Javelin

Pistols dual; with off hand

Cutting pole arms (glaive, naginata, sword staff)

Crossbow

Blow darts

Tonfas

And some more fantasy ones already in the game:

Gunshields

Gungauntlets

Rifleswords (aka garlean gunbaldes)

And of course some potentilally fitting more fantastical ones:

Whip swords

Dualwielding 1h Crossbows

Crystal ball caster foci

Puppets

Mugs

Gunaxe

Firelance/handcannon

Dead animal bit caster foci

And if ast can have cards as part of it's weapon/Design what's stopping dice, coins, etc from being used for a Job?

There are plenty of weapons still available to use, especially considering that the weapons of Sages, Gunbreakers, and Astrologians are entirely made up. As are two swords that become one double sword. If they ever run out of weapons, they can always just keep inventing new ones, or new pairings.

That said, they won't run out. As others have already demonstrated, the martial world is absolutely full of more than enough weapons to last this game another 10 years.

You are discounting the door that Viper is going to open: transforming weapons.

Monster Hunter has Sword/Shield that turns into 2h Axe, 2h Axe that turns into massive Greatsword, I think there was an MMO exclusive one too. So we could have a new class that uses a (current weapon) that transforms into (other current weapon) and that'd count as a new thing technically

Personally, I'd make a KamenRider/GARO themed class, where the 'weapon glam' that changes is not any gear on you, but the suit you change into for the 'not Enshroud' move. The 'weapon' can be a belt since we don't have a slot dedicated to those anymore. And we know Yoshi-P is a fan of Kamen Rider so I bet he'd be on board with it (copyright laws might have a word or two though)

SE can also take some things or change things up from other jobs to get new weapons if for some reason we had any chance of running out.

i will also say there are many types of swords so its not like they couldnt specifically say the kind of sword to get a new sword job course they could always just go with the many many other weapons there are out there or even go with more fictional/ non pratical weapons since its a fantasy world no reason to go by the logic of the real world when we deal with dragons gods and magic on the daily.

A puff of smoke that changes shape depending on the attack would be funny. The job could have attacks with all sorts of shapes: "Axesmash", "HammerThyme", "PuffPuffAOE" (Toxicity DoT -not- included), "Triangle-Smoke-Lazer!"

But chemist would almost need to be a healer and a healer that isn't a mage is a concept to far out for the BU3 :'(

Ah yes the windows exclusive job; Vindow Viper (He vipes da vindows) You a real one for that reference.
On topic a flail esque job would be cool, or a dammy class that uses dummies as what you stick on the floor for the enemies to attack while you're far away throwing random junk at the enemy.

Fantasy archtypes missing from FFXIV:

A magic class with a single dagger. Usually its Necromancer like, but could also work for a druid like job.

A job that wields a symbolic vigil such as an ankh, pendent, etc. Casters don't have to just use wands, staves, or orbs.

An Onmyoji type job that wields a lamp, and tags. This job has been suggested by Yoshi P in the past.

A crossbow. This is an obvious pick for a ranger, and I really hope if beastmaster is a thing, that it isn't the type of weapon used, or that if it is, that since it would be a limited job, they wouldn't mind a regular job still getting its own version of the weapon. I suppose one could wield a light crossbow, and the other could wield a heavy crossbow.

A Zhue Grabbing claw would make for a unique martialist type weapon. Its similar to a whip, but it has a claw on the end.

A scimitar would make for a unique sword look in the future. I hope that if it appeared, it would be on a spellsword type class.

African throwing knives would be unique, though they have a very odd design. Its fascinating.

Uromi would make for another whip class type of a weapon. It was half sword and half whip, and would be badass.

A bell for geomancer would be lovely. I do NOT want a geomancer that uses anything else. I want it to be pure to the series, and when people suggest any other weird weapon for them, I get upset. Reinvent the combat since the mechanics can't be weather based on locales. Just make it a weather themed job that works as dps. And no Geo is NOT similar to Astrologian, or White Mage. I'm so sick of hearing that. I wish it was never in the Astrologian quests because of how fans tend to assume things could never work.

Gunshield. Its a thing of the past. Look it up. Would be an interesting thing.

A rosary for a priest type of job. I know they aren't always popular, but it isn't the worst thing when done correctly. I'm not even a Christian, and I enjoy priest type of healers sometimes. They have interesting lore when they have different ways to customize their faith. I really enjoy how they are in Baldurs Gate 3 with the endless options to express the archetype.


Point is, if they want it. Square Enix can do it. We are now at a point where jobs are going to take extra work and creativity to pull off, and I think its great.

Since Abyssos 6th circle, i want to use a parasitic symbiote as a job weapon :3

Nah. There are still plenty of weapon types left, and even existing weapons can be made to look, and feel different by changing character's battle stance when their weapons are drawn.

Plenty more weapon ideas left but not as many jobs.

I think you're looking at it from an archetypal fighting game perspective than a FF/ RPG one. In that respect, there's still plenty of options left.

In fact, I kind of wish they would be a bit more daring with their choices and delve more into FF's history to give us something a little different and out there like Setzer or Rune's jobs from FFVI. The "super cool" power fantasy classes are getting kind of boring, though that's clearly where the money and popularity is.

I can understand the amount of realistic / practical weapons becoming narrower, but I don’t think that applies to something like Final Fantasy where people have used Harps, Flutes, Mega-phones, Books, Dolls, Balls (lol) and all sorts of weird and impractical weapons. Hell FFIX has those giant tennis racquet staves.
I feel like there’s still tons of cool weapons they could give new jobs in ffxiv. And personally I always prefer the novel/unexpected weapons, like Scholar/Summoner’s books or Astrologian’s star globes

I'm still hoping for a job that uses a Magitek Reaper for a weapon.

Gunlance, Switch Axe, Insect Glaice, and Hunting Horn.

But seriously, a staff-wielding job would be neat.

I want dual pistols myself.

Scarce? pffft.
Is full of weapons: ancient weapons, cultural weapons, medieval weapons, modern weapons and fiction weapons to make thousands of diferent Jobs.

What might be scarce is the imagination of the playerbase and developers, but thats another topic.

I want something kind of like that, but more lightweight with magic (or magitek) forcefields rather than heavy armour. Would make for a different vibe of tank than "guy with a big blade".
