[Request] Address gear with gendered differences

(I made this thread in the General forum a long while back but I realized this section may make more sense given items being the subject matter and also General being a cesspool of nonstop troll spam.)

It is a very, very good thing that the game has masculine and feminine options for players, but players should have the option of which look they would like to use. The devs have been doing a great job going back and making gender exclusive gear available for everyone and I believe eventually they will do so for everything. However, that still leaves the issue of gear pieces that differ in appearance depending on who equips them.

One example is the Casual Attire:

The female version turns the top into a long dress with shorts far above the knee. The male version's shirt ends much further up with longer shorts. I would personally much prefer the male version which I feel suits the highlander tomboy vibe much better, and I'm sure there are many players who feel the same in either direction.

Another excellent example is the gear from the Nier raids:

I would absolutely love to be able to use the male versions of these sets. They look so dignified!

One of my most coveted items is this Nier Tower chest piece. It looks so cool with the ammo vest and raised scarf!



So what is the solution? It seems like there are two potential options.

1. Split every piece of gendered gear into [M] and [F] sets like the Rathalos gear.
This seems like the most realistic solution. People who already have the gear would probably have to be forced into one or the other during the transition, then can go trade it for the opposite one if they want at the Calamity Salvager or some other vendor. The issue with this solution is how it impacts the actual drops. When you defeat a boss in Copied Factory would it now drop two of every item? Does it drop a token you turn in for the look of your choice?

2. Leave the gear as is but add an NPC or right click menu option that flips the appearance from one look to the other.
This would be the ideal solution IMO but I have no idea if it's even possible given how the game works under the hood.


What do you think? Which solution would you like to see implemented, or is there an even better one you would prefer?

I fully support your idea. My character is female, but for my personal preference I would like her to wear handsome masculine clothing.
I think the first idea you propose is more feasible, though it could use some modification. As an example, players can get a [Obsolete Android's Cloak of Aiming Coffer] during the Duty. After Use this coffer, players can get both [M] and [F] gears. Or the players can get the coffer and choose [M] or [F] for themselves.
But all options are predicated on the premise that "the devs can modify all gender-specific clothing for the other gender". Obviously this will be a difficult task...

Yes. Please. Yes. I'm so sick and tired of seeing appearances that I really wish I could use but can't because it's specific to one gender. Hells, the new crafted gear in the next patch is a perfect example. Why can't I be allowed to just wear booty shorts on a male character??? Let my catboy show his thighs, damnit! 'Cause out of all the options for really short shorts in this game, 90% turn into pants when worn by a male character and I hate it. And I've love to be able to use the female versions of the Nier gear too- and a bunch of other stuff. And if I did play a female character, I'm sure I'd very much be clamouring for a lot of the pants that only male characters get.

more option are great is a +1 for me. However alot of other do not see it that way.

Oh, that's a great idea! I hadn't even considered a coffer option. That pretty much solves the drop issue entirely. So then it's just a matter of if the devs feel like doing the work. I wonder how much goes into adapting the model from one gender to another?

A software was mentioned in FFXIV Backstage Investigators. It can automatically modify equipment to match each race. However, the article mentions that equipment still need to be manually adjusted by the artists.
I don't know if manual adjustments are a chore. But the impression I got from the article was that "it's not impossible to do, and it's not even as difficult as I thought it would be". (To be honest, I think the gender stereotypes of some devs are probably the bigger problem. They always think that women should wear less than men!)

I see. Well I suppose we can remain hopeful that one day it will happen. They've done the same thing at least once before with the Rathalos gear so it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.

Considering all the pants that turn into panties if your character is a woman, even in artifact gear, I wholeheartedly support this, please let me have pants for my female characters. :D That said, making an M and F version would also mean I'd have to get a lot more glamour dresser space, considering there are some gear pieces where I like the look of both versions. Maybe one could just introduce a toggle somewhere in the character window, like for visors? (Would have to be more than one button I guess so you can have the [m] jacket but the [f] boots of something for example, but it would be easier than having to exchange things at an NPC.)

That reminds me, another great example is the summer set from last year. When the sets were data mined I was so excited to finally have some knee length shorts for my character, but then it turned out to be another gendered item that forces me into bikini bottoms #17862378123. :(

Hehe, I might have thought of that attire (and lvl 70 WHM gear) when I wrote that post. Such a damn shame... And I bet this year's Moonfire Faire will be just the same in this regard. :/

Not at all. There are a good number of outfits in this game where I prefer (or equally like) the male version of a varied design, or prefer how a unisex piece looks on a male character to a female character.

Because pirates like their booty?

In all seriousness, however: what you're seeing is the perceived preferences by "The Majority". It's not always agreeable with our own tastes in wardrobe. I'm a sarong guy myself, so I like having that extra bit of swimwear; plus I like wearing short shorts (as a guy).

As far as the outfit pictured. I'd prefer the option for short shorts on the girl and running short length on the guy.

It's all subjective and all the more reason to give everyone the option to choose what they prefer. :)

Bumping with another example. I'd love to use that male tanking set, and if a dude wants to use the frilly saloon dress, why shouldn't he? I use it on MCH sometimes, it's great!

Not making them basically the other way around, the dresses for the guys and the pants for the ladies, when they reintroduced the Neo-Ishgardian gear as crafteable EW gear was such a missed opportunity. (I know a guy playing a male character who would love to be able to wear that saloon dress. And I would be very happy if I could use the vest-shirt thing from the Roe on the left with some sturdy pants on my catgirl.)

The answer to why it's not a thing is likely the mundane problem of development time.

They have to develop a male and female version already, but having each of those also fitted to the gender they weren't initially designed for doubles(or increases) development time for artists.

It's also going to add to the game's file size as you'll need new models for each - the textures at least could be recycled.

Retro-fitting all the existing gear would be an absolutely massive undertaking and they're likely budgeting dev time to expansions and patching instead. I think the best you'll see is a few popular pieces getting ported over as time allows if the art team is caught up on higher priority work.

There really aren't that many pieces of gear as a whole that have this problem, and I don't think it's that intensive to port them over. Many of the male items I've mentioned in this thread can be used on females right now if you don't mind breaking ToS.

And Dragoon's Wyrm/Drachen ARR artifact gear. I'm not against the exposed stomach on female, but having a fully protected version for female would be nice too (and obviously males getting an open stomach version of some kind.

This would be a pretty intense endeavor for the devs, but since they've been putting in more effort to gender-unlock previously restricted gear and release new sets that have both masculine and feminine alternate pieces rather than having the same piece have different appearances (like the Woodland Warden set), I don't feel like this is that insane of an ask for further down the line, once the graphical update and 2-dye system are fully implemented. It's certainly worth calling to their attention, at any rate. Personally I get immeasurably jealous whenever I see male characters wearing Neo-Ishgardian gear, Type-51 gear, the Summer Sunset pants, etc.

This set as well. Snow's outfit is one of the most popular glams and it's a travesty that females can't use it! The hair too.

Please, for the love of all things, I really hope this gets fixed eventually. Cool shorts? Lol, sorry, female only. Guess that means I have to wear long pants for playing a male character… irritating. I get that the devs are gradually making more gender-exclusive gear available for everyone, and that’s awesome, but there’s still a lot of pieces that look completely different depending on who equips them. It’s just frustrating when you want a certain aesthetic and the game forces you into something else. They've made great progress, but alas, things like this still exist and bother us.

I think that if they added a vendor section to trade the coins you get from the ARs, you can then buy whatever piece you want. The coffer would most likely match your character's gender by default, unfortunately... or they could come up with a new UI thingie that asks you what you want upon opening it. Would be terribly useful for savage/EX when we gotta switch to different jobs to open coffers, then switch back to keep on farming.

After glamour is fully unlocked in 7.4, the gender locked stuff is the final frontier for forbidden glams. Hopefully they're able to do something about the items mentioned in this thread in the not too distant future.

The AF gear is actually the worst offender here. I'm still mad about dancer AF.

On a similar note: race specific looks ... I'm referring of course the Hempen Camise. As much as I love the unique look my elezen gets from the top ... I would really love the option of the halter top that some of the races get. Or maybe they just need to make another piece in game that is a halter top.

Nothing like clicking on someone because they're wearing a cute piece you've never noticed before only to find out it looks totally different on your character.

I hope they're able to get to this eventually but I understand if we need to wait an xpac or two first.

Aymeric's set is old as b#lls, and that hairstyle was always unisex. So none of that "butbut npcs--" works here.
Unless there is something interesting we dunno about good lord de Borel.

I support this just because I want to have the female lvl 50 dragoon artifactgear without that belly hole. Some people like it, but it always felt dumb to me.
