RESTRICT act also know as the TikTok ban adds a ton of broadly worded language that in some people's opinion lead to criminalizing VPNs.
What is the FFXIV community's views on this.

why are you bringing real world drama that has to do with tik tok into this game? also going to point out that vpn's are widely used to by pass country stuff. netflix is a huge example of that where people with vpn's will connect to other countries to watch different programs. in gaming. it might help with latency but still its bypassing your own country and hiding your ip as being from another country.
If it shuts down TikTok in the West I'm all for it.
(insert upsetting conspiracy language here)
Oh nooooo where will the cringy kids dance anymore?
of course people are focusing on tiktok and not everything else the op has posted lol
Who cares, I don't I will contine to love tiktok and other things using all the damn time anyway I want. I dont care what some old fat sacks of meat say i will do as I please. Noone will follow what the boomers are trying anyways so I say to hell with them
My thoughts.
It will be old news soon enough, and a new service will come into power to replace it.
Or people will just flock over to a new place.
Youtube shorts is actually doing pretty good.
If government wanted to ban Tik Tok they would just make a bill that bans Tik Tok. This one doesn't even mention Tik Tok so that should tell you everything you need to know about it.
I don't care because I don't use Social Media apps like TikTok. Social media does more harm than good in my opinion. It's distorted the meaning of "friend". It's led to unrealistic expectations in people. It's encouraged people to engage in extremely dangerous stunts not just to themselves but to others all the sake of getting a few views.
It was weird but I was reading an article about what "Zoomers" wished that "Boomers" could understand (I'm not a Boomer but I'm closer to Boomer than Zoomer). The most mentioned complaint was how much pressure and stress social media apps puts on Zoomer lives. My immediate thought when seeing that was "why on earth are you continuing to use something that you acknowledge is unhealthy for you and is completely optional?" There are other ways to stay in contact with family and actual friends.
So I'm honestly fine if it gets banned along with other social media apps. Any provisions related to banning VPNs will likely end up amended or deleted so that shouldn't be a worry to gamers.
Because it's trying to dramatize the VPN part of the legislation.
I haven't read it in detail but my understanding that is the legislation would make it unlawful to use a VPN to access TikTok if it is banned. I haven't heard anything saying that the legislation would ban use of VPNs in general.
Sadly if it shuts down...a new one will rise from the ashes...like a Phoenix.
TBH the only reason I see for the US Gov to want to ban Tik Tok is because it's Chinese and denting the wallets of US based social media platforms.
If they do ban it then the next thing they should ban is warning labels... So many of the worlds issues would fix themselves if they just banned all warning labels... Stop fighting natural selection... >.>
There are other ways to find communities, like going out and meeting people in your real life local community.
Most social media isn't very good for holding actual conversations. A lot of people would prefer to talk with each other instead of simply at each other.
Boomers don't hate their lives. They just have different ideas of what they want their lives to be than you do.
There are plenty of other social media platforms out there for people to switch to. Congress is very unlikely to go after any that are based in the US or its allies. The focus on TikTok is because of its alleged use by China for espionage and gathering data on the US.
The other aspect is because Tik Tok is a Chinese company (which means it is beholden to the CCP) there is no effective way for government to regulate it like they could do with US based companies. That being said, government is so deep in the pockets of big tech that they don't regulate them anyway so...
does that bill even mention tictok? pretty sure its just the patriot act internet edition, it basically creates a bunch of laws that make it illegal to do anything online that wont be enforced unless you have "wrong-think" and they want a excuse to jail you. so the fear of the CCP is just allowing a new grp to be just as corrupt, cheers.
I think people are hysterical... and also it is not related to FFXIV at all.
Would be the same to put a ban on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter.... they all do the same... collect information.
I'm in EU, so I don't care. But dear US, please get your shit together.
For those that think this is US only, it is not, other governments have restrictions on Tiktok for people in public service.
Close but not quite. It is true that social media is general is a major issue.
However, Titkitok is a special case. PRC can use TikTok for information to formulate propaganda, and considering how easy it is to polarize and lie to Westerners, that's a major concern. Tiktok reports to the parent company, which reports to the CCP.
That said, this bill sucks. It's vague and more government power generally leads to bad things.
Funny how many people have been like "good, TikTok bad" when seeing this. Giving up a lot of freedoms just so that you don't have to think about an app you don't have to use yourself existing.
I think all social media is terrible for society as I said in my post. In a different post I said that the biggest problem with Tik Tok is that it is under the control of the CCP and we can't regulate it effectively, but we can regulate US tech companies. As for banning it, I don't really care. If it gets banned, something will fill the void by it no longer existing, as has been seen in other countries that banned Tik Tok. The real thing that needs to be fixed is that there is no data privacy from big tech and no one in government cares enough to pass a law to deal with that.
I mean, isn't tik tok notoriously used by pedophiles?
If so, ban it to the moon and back.
Also, it just seemed like a sad program anyway in general. A bunch of children acting like adults and adults acting like children.
