3000 characters is not enough.

Why are we still stuck with this ridiculously small character limit?

Popular threads run at a mile a minute sometimes.

If you're offline for even a few hours, you may already have several posts you want to reply to.

It's considered bad netiquette to spam a thread with several different posts in a row without intervening posts from others. So trying to reply to each post separately is a bad idea, that's why we have multiquote in the first place.

But ... if you try and reply meaningfully to multiple posts with multiquote, you inevitably get told "YOUR POST IS TOO LONG. PLEASE SHORTEN IT." and have to Ctrl-X, post, and edit it afterwards. Doesn't that make the limit a misfeature?

Apparently there is some "quote exploit" to go beyond 3000. I don't know how it works.

Imho if you get told your reply being too long, it might be a good idea to use [HB]. That way, readers can choose themselves whether or not they want to have that wall of essay(s) thrown to their screen/monitor.

Reach 3000 limit. Edit the post and add in the rest. For some reason, edits bypass the 3k character limit.

Literally just edit your post. This is no character limit.

I usually just type out my entire post, if it stops me posting it, copy and delete the lot and post the shortest possible (edit incoming) message. Immediately edit and paste my huge-ass post back in. Done.

Proper: Yesterday I went to the store and bought some milk. While I was there, I also bought some eggs since they were on sale.

After a few minutes, I arrived at the store and made my way inside. Once I got inside I went to the cold section and picked up some milk. While I was over there, I noticed they had a sale going for eggs. I thought to myself "I am running low on eggs" and decided to buy some.

If the entire post doesn't fit on my phone screen, it's too long and I'm not reading it let alone go through the pain of quoting only the relevant parts. People who write an essay quoting my 2 sentences are the worst.

Right? As even if you want to quote multiple people the quotes themselves count as part of the character limit. It's why you will see people delete an entire quote and have snip in the quoted part. Even the text in

here

is counted towards the character limit.

This way people need to think about whether what they plan to post is worth posting separately or if they should combine posts on a related topic together (or if it even should be posted at all). It's extremely rare that I hit the daily limit.

I use to hit the cap daily. Now with the Discord...I don't do much here anymore.

Being an alleged exploit, that sounds ban-risky, but aside that: Quotes don't help you go beyond 3000. They actually eat up your characters.

This basically is the point, or rather, points. The problem is when you're trying to catch up on a thread and want to reply to multiple posts. Even if you try and make concise points, if there's several things to reply to you're going to hit the limit and have to screw around with edits.

Unless we want to do away with actual discussion and just move everything to Tweet style EVERYWHERE, where everything is just done via strict one liners and like/dislike votes unless you're invested enough to set up hosting and a site and literally link a full scale article?

I expect this is more of a culture clash. I guess you can always tell which of us grew up on authors like King, Bradley, Tolkien, Jordan, and Carey. Yanno, "never use one word when ten will do" :)
