End-of-duty loot campers

(Yes, this idea did come to me because of the comic The_Eggroller posted recently)

We've all had it happen. The Alliance Raid has finished, and everyone is rolling on the loot. Everyone except the one player who's hoping to wait out all the people who rolled high so they can claim the loot they want by default.

It seems to me that allowing them to do this is rewarding them for toxic behavior. The determined and petty among us might wait out the five minute timer, but that's not a guarantee. Finding the holdout is possible, but naming and shaming them could easily just compound the toxicity, and a report for griefing won't release the loot any faster.

I have a simple solution. Once the duty has completed, every time a player rolls on the loot, the loot timer maximum is reduced by a percent of its total. For simple math, let's say 10% of the 300 second timer. So the first person to roll on the loot drops the timer from 300 seconds to 270, roll two lowers it to 243, and so on. At that rate, if 23/24 players have rolled, the single holdout has a maximum of about 30 seconds that they can waste of everyone's time. Naturally these percentages can be tuned, a minimum time could be added, or other adjustments could be made to leave everyone enough time to roll.

Thoughts?

I'm just curious what happens to people that are in cutscenes. Some of those cutscenes can get pretty long.

As far as I know, most of the custscenes post-raids are after the player exits the duty, aside from the monster briefly thrashing around as it dies, and the players putting away their weapons looking pleased with themselves. A buffer for cutscenes would definitely fall under the "other adjustments" category, though!

If they did implement something, maybe not have the chest available to open till everyone is out of the cutscene. I'm horrible at ideas.

The loot timer should be 90s, no more than 120s. There is no situation in which someone should take longer than that to decide if they want something, even if they have to come out of a boss death cutscene first. Even a raid group trying to divvy up gear for the weekly clears should be able to do it in less than two minutes; if it takes longer, the group needs a better gear tracking system for their members.

Yes, anything. Imo if you dont roll within 3 min youll loose the loot this week as a punishment for grieving. And no if something is up, you can either quickly roll or just leave right away.

To be honest i dont see the issue, just go sit down. Any holdout will usually quickly realise that their tactic wont work and roll. Its rather rare that the timer counts all the way down.
A shorter timer could be problematic. I dont know if loot timers with different lengths can be used because chests during dungeon or raid cant always be voted right away. Group is usually so impatient in tackling the next boss that any checks on dropped gear will make you hit the lockout of the arena.

I'm on board for the end-of dungeon loot, but I don't really mind the 5-minute timer during the dungeon, especially since if you don't click on the chest yourself, the only indicator in the UI that you have something to roll on is a small notification, usually hidden in a corner of the screen. But as soon as the last boss dies, the timer on any outstanding loot, including the ones from the final chest, should be reduced down to 120s if it is currently greater than that.

I have dual monitors, i would just go watch a YouTube video or something while that last person decides if they’ll roll or not

The thing I don’t get is like, has ‘loot camping’ ever actually worked for anyone? lol
Everytime I see it, they hold out for a bit but eventually give up when they realize everyone else is just as willing to play the same game lol. Still annoying though

It's absolutely fine to use for a brief period.
When you have a one-loot lockout rule, you pass on everything you don't want, hold off on the one thing you do, and you wait 15-30 seconds for other people to claim their preferred items.
This prevents other people who may have just rolled on everything willy-nilly, from snatching up that one and only thing you needed. That's perfectly fair.
But after about 30 seconds, and/or as soon as every other item has been claimed, it's apparent that someone else also wants what you want. Then you roll and get it over with, because the two of you aren't gaining anything from waiting any longer than that.

Same goes for rare loot without lockouts, if people haven't left the duty in the first few seconds, they're obviously holding out the same as you and you have nothing to gain from waiting, just roll.

That said the roll timer is there for a reason, and it would inconvenience those in cutscenes or otherwise unable to roll if that timer was reduced further.
The best thing would be periodic warnings, prompting people to roll for loot, perhaps once per minute.

So I did a Euphrosyne the other day and I was waiting on the TT cards to be awarded. And some guy sat there and sat there and realized he was on my server. Ultimately, about 18 or so people left and this guy won the card. After we got out of the duty, I sent him a tell - trying not to be nasty or confrontational about it.

He claims he was on his 35th run of Euphrosyne and had lotted upwards of 97 and never got the card. And he wants all of them. And he's lost cards multiple times to people that win 2 cards in one run or people that even openly boast that they are lotting Need even though they already have it.

I feel for this guy. In some cases, players find something lacking in the system, something developers should have addressed years ago and then take advantage of it so they can move on.

I don't agree with loot camping and I do wish the timer was less than 5 minutes. But players will do what they can do "beat the system" especially if it is completely "legal" to do so. Look at what happened with MSQ Roulette. The number of people dropping Castrum became such a problem that SE eventually just killed Castrum/Prae and remade it to sort of even out the reward vs time aspect of it.

Players used to also keep backing out of dungeon queues popping because it wasn't Party In Progress since they wanted that quick clear. They put in the "3 withdrawals and you are out" penalty. In a similar vein, they also put in the 30 minute dungeon abandon penalty.

Withdrawing/abandoning in favor of another duty is within the rules, the same way waiting 5 minutes is. Maybe SE will eventually address it. Personally, I think the 5 minute rule is partially in place to give players that unfortunately DCd at the end of an instance enough time to log back in.
