This post has been very enlightening, thank you very much for all the insight provided by the players who have contributed to this post!
It is very clear that many players do not want mounts in cities so I have decided to shut this post down and move onto a different direction with a new post.

Already we are getting some fantastic feedback from the players in here! Thank you to everyone thus far.
The fact is that other MMOs do not have any problems with mounts in cities so this game should not have any problems with it either.
Please reply to this thread with which fix you would like to see implemented!
Options to fix this problem thus far.
#1 Implement a zero cooldown sprint, a perma sprint or a sprint buff as soon as you enter a city that does not allow mounts.
#2 Add collision detection around important in game assets such as quest giving NPCs and retainer bells. Allowing players to stand on top of important assets allows for griefing in not only cities but the world as a whole.
No thanks, I kinda like being able to navigate without a ton of mounts in the way. I'm aware I can hold my target filter button to click through them but mounting in cities is rude and probably breaking some city-state by-law or ordinance.
Nobody wants this.
I don't even want to imagine how painful it would be to try to summon your retainer in these conditions.
Nah, I already have trouble rendering Lower Limsa at above 40 FPS without mounts.
What cities need is a more smart Aetheryte placement (looking at you, Gridania) and/or more of them.
No thanks, a majority of the mounts in this game are garishly ugly or oversized and I don't want those cluttering up the screen when I'm trying to do stuff inside a city. Having boring unoriginal people who thought they were funny use their mounts to block NPCs at EW launch was already annoying enough, don't want people doing that 24/7 in cities.
HAHAHAHA CERBERUS GO BRRRRRRRRRRRR
We already have enough fools on mounts blocking NPCs and other things. Don't exacerbate the behavior by being more obnoxious. Moving the AFK kick-out spot for Island Sanctuary was one of the best things they have done for the game. Now, if they could just learn to have collision detection around NPCs and things we interact with so we don't have to keep holding down X to be able to click on something without 50 people standing right on top of it, that would be even better.
I'm good with no mounts in cities, but I would be down for a perma-sprint. Or maybe a skill like we have in IS to where you can have 100% sprint uptime, but you don't have to use it if you don't want to.
Cities can be a clusterfuck at times as they are. No need to make them even moreso with giant whales all over the place.
I'd rather not see mounts in cities. Especially bulky ones like Cerberus and the Lunar Whale.
It would be nice to get the PVP Sprint toggle in cities.
If you need extra speed in cities you can always level up a ranged physical job to get Peloton.
Not wholly against mounts but would rather have perma sprint or IS low cooldown sprint. Something ought to be done though since cities keep getting bigger with not entirely optimal aethernets.
You hit the nail on the head! This is a symptom of a much deeper problem lack of collision detection around things like quest giving NPCS and retainer bells.
Lack of collision detection effects the entire server not just cities and should be rectified.
The fact remains that none of the problems mentioned so far in this thread are problems in other mainstream MMOs so they should not be a problem here.
No thank you
Picture someone with the Lunar Whale in Gridania or Limsa. Most of the cities aren't spacious enough to justify mounts, especially the extra-large mounts.
I suppose the Crystarium has plenty of room, but now that we've moved on from it, I don't see the devs going back to it.
Well it is better that they are not and for good reasons... droppings.
Also think it is more of a dream to get cities free of vehicles and also not much room in these cities for mounts.
FFXIV just kept it realistic one way or another.

Once upon a time, FFXIV wasn't like "every other MMO." Wish it had stayed that way. Go back to WoW and stop pushing for this stuff in XIV. kthx.
Nothing like some good ol' tribalism! Even Yoshi P has said that XIV wouldn't exist without WoW, and that WoW was a game they constantly looked up to.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mgwl...hannel=blluist (use CC).
There is plenty of inspiration that can be taken from XIV's competition. Not everything would work or even be feasible in this game, but there's no reason to have such a knee-jerk reaction to a simple post suggesting a feature found in other games.
"Go back to WoW" is such a lazy reply.
Many years ago, in Ironforge, we had whats called Winter Veil. There are NPC's who hand out presents, that kind of thing. For YEARS, idiots on Mammoths blocked those NPCs , laughing at us when we asked them to stop....then, one year....the players on my server had had a gutful.
"Go ahead and report me, the Gms wont do anything"
The reports started flooding in, HUNDREDS of reports...this time, one by one, the idiots started vanishing.
Rumours abounded until one player told his guildmates that he had been SUSPENDED...turns out Blizzard had turfed out a GM from home ON CHRISTMAS DAY, was told he or she had free rein to deal with it as he saw fit.
So: imagine this: a staffer on Christmas Day, told to come to work and help out because players were acting like jerks...AGAIN.
The GM, more than likely LIVID at having been dragged back into work because of these shenanigans, started banning people left and right. The rest of us were sitting there cheering and laughing our heads off.
Now, that area has a dismount zone.
So a flat NO to mounting in cities.
People saying " no thank u xd"
Limsa,gridania/uldah are the same since ARR. 1 DECADE ago of no updates or whatsoever. All those cities should already be open without restrictions or invisible walls/ loading screens.
Massive open sections for example Uldah should be fully connected with central/western Thanalan.
But nope, people spend 40 usd on exclusive mounts to only use it 20% of their playtime.
I wouldn't mind if we had a very big city. A new city with multiple layers/levels would make use of flying mounts. No to the current starting cities.
They could also make use of the mount debuff (The same one as the island sanctuary) where certain buildings will force you to dismount.
it'd be nice if they could be out and be shrunken down to follow you around like a beefed up minion but the zones themselves are tiny enough that it feels unnecessary when you have mini aetherytes
If you want to show off a mount, go join a hunt train.
