Single Target Dotons

Hello, I've been playing on and off since a few months before Rogue and Ninja were released. I finally got Ninja to 60 and something's been bothering me.

Is there ever a situation where I should doton a single enemy? I see people arguing about it a lot and want to know the truth. I don't want to upset my team :(

The idea is doing it before a boss pull and refreshing your Mudra before the start of battle; at your level, no. Don't worry about it. Just Huton, Hide, pull with Suiton, and go from there.

You should not be single target Dotoning, it has less potency than raiton and takes an extra button press to execute.

This does not work anymore, hide cancels doton.

There are a very very very few number of instances that doing it would be worthwhile and it's unlikely you would come to one of those instances and even if you did, it's a minimal gain. So I would say "No." is the safest answer.

99.9% of the time no. There has to be a situation where there is downtime (i.e. the boss is untargetable) at a certain point in the fight in addition to said downtime being a certain length and even then, you get like 1 or 2 ticks off on the boss (P8s part 2 is an example of this). Outside of that .1%, never ever use doton in single target.

Never .... this is especially prevalent when you get Raiju at 90, you will lose soooo much damage if you use doton over raiton on single target . Basically the rule of thumb for the most part with any job , if an ability is aoe and doesn't have fall off damage or has a shared cd with another ability that's strictly ST it's not meant for your ST rotation

I only know one justified situtaion for single target doton: Alexander 12, because Time Stop doesn't stop Doton from doing damage

Raiton is 650 potency, Doton is 480 potency. You would be better off using Raiton and there are no instances in that fight where Alex is untargetable and you have the chance to pre cast Doton.

but doton looks pretty

I'm not arguing that Raiton is the better skill for Single Target, my point is that you cannot move while time is stopped and only the Doton DoT actively ticks even in stopped time ^^

Sure, what he's saying though is that if you can use Doton, you can use Raiton and it's better to use Raiton. It's not like you can cast Doton but not Raiton in that instance.

At some point Square needs to just write "Use Raiton instead of this against one target" in Doton's description

My Idea about that is that the Monster/Boss straight up turns to the NIN and one hits them

Using doton in that scenario is a dps loss regardless though so its a moot point if it still ticks in time stop. Even more so if it means losing a raiton during a buff window.

Friends don't let friends cast Doton in single-target fights.

Squenix specifically, at some point between ShB and EW (I forget when) went through and basically removed a large majority of "strange" prepull efficiency things like Doton prepull. That particular thing was "fixed" by, as you saw, having hide remove Doton. Some others were "fixed" by requiring enemy targets to use.

The ONLY instance where Doton could be considered "useful" (kind of) for a single target would be a long stretch of the boss being untargetable (like... 28s) and popping one down where they're going to show up (as long as you get it out right away). Even then, you're only getting 1-2 ticks from Doton which is a small amount of value AND you're possibly letting your rotation drift compared to other players since they'll be holding onto their bursts.

If someone is asking, the easiest answer is "It's never worth it." In reality, it could possibly be a little bit worth it and by "a little" I mean like 0.0001% boost in DPS in very very particular situations. Not worth it.
