Regarding Titus yae Galvus

Did we get any confirmation that he, like his son, Nerva, turned into a blasphemy? Or is he in hiding with the rest of the royal family?

He could be a potential ally and the next emperor of Garlemald if he’s alive.

He wasn’t killed by Varis in ARR, he and his son Nerva took advantage of the rumours that Zenos was possessed by a demon according to Lucia in Endwalker. Of course that was when Elidibus was possessing Zenos.

I think the biggest issue is that it's either said during a quest outside of a cutscene or its in one of the ones that isn't re-watchable and why I can't remember it exactly. But I do think that was the case (granted I also could be wrong too) . Ot something to that effect atleast .. now I really want to know LOL

It's in the questline that branches off from one of the aether current quests: Stranded at the Station. The NPCs during that questline make mention of the royal family during the quests.

Ok so I found the quest. It’s a shame that the royal household have perished. Unless the devs will introduce some survivors in the future. But still, it’s rather vague if Titus was amongst the casualties.

However, Nerva is a member of the royal family but his end was different.

Also keep in mind that if Titus was still important, he probably would've come up by now. FFXIV is not the type of story to just not mention a character until suddenly relevant as some kind of gotcha.

Especially since Titus basically only exists in the Lodestone short stories (he only exists in-game as an abstract, Varis' opponent for the throne is not named in 2.x). You use Titus as an ace up the sleeve for future Garlean content, think about it from the perspective of people who don't/haven't read those stories enough to remember him: that doesn't look like a clever lore pull, that looks like they pulled a crown prince out of nowhere.

Considering how they handled Solus/Emet-Selch, I wouldn't really consider it a stretch as he was mentioned only a handful of times prior to him being shoved into the spotlight at the end of 4.3.

Titus was mentioned more recently in Shadowbringers and Endwalker due to Nerva's involvement in things, so he wouldn't be a total non-entity.

Considering how things went in the MSQ, anything’s possible. Also the twins and Lucia & Maxima are still in Garlemald, so that nation’s story has not yet ended.

I was thinking that maybe he'd be a new leadership for the remaining Garlean legions to rally under...except we already know that all of them outright refused to get involved with Nerva and instead wanted to reclaim the capital on their own terms if at all; likely due to the claims that Varis' death was orchestrated by him and Titus.

I have this lingering suspicion that something big is going on behind the scenes with them, but I'm not sure Titus will be the one responsible.

Or perhaps the nation will return to being a republic again. So many possibilities. Varis’s bodyguards might still be alive tracking down Gaius and Estinien at this point. Since they saw what happened.

Well frankly I didn't like that instance, I've talked before about how I think Emet cheapened the Garlean story. But 'the first Emperor' is a pretty reasonable person to bring up and delve into for a story with an empire, because that guy very clearly existed and was in some way important; even if you forgot his name because he was last brought up back in 2.x, it makes sense. Titus isn't the same; he actually wasn't named even in Shadowbringers and Endwalker, Nerva was the guy that took spotlight as the contender for the throne. Honestly I just assumed Titus died sometime during Heavensward, Stormblood or even pre-patch Shadowbringers when he was so irrelevant that wouldn't even be worth acknowledging.

I was under the impression that Titus was killed in the first of two Garlean wars of succession.

Remember that there have been two civil wars over the throne. The first was Varis vs Titus and the second was Zenos vs Nerva vs pretty much everyone else. If the game is suggesting that he took advantage of rumors of Zenos being possessed by a demon, I don't think that would make sense and I would say it's probably a writing error.

It would not make sense for the loser of a whole civil war over the succession to not only still be alive when his presence threatens the stability of the throne, but still have political power. You would also think that he and not his son Nerva would have been mentioned vying for the throne in the second civil war if he were still alive. The Populares were also Titus' faction that he led and they were almost completely destroyed by Varis through being purged and gassed. If Varis somehow initially survived the civil war he started, there's no way he's still alive now.

On top of all that, there's no mention of him at all by even the Garleans when the idea of rebuilding Garlemald comes up when Fourchenalt brings up surviving members of the senate potentially leading and overseeing the rebuilding.

Titus surviving the first civil war seemed unlikely, but especially not after the second one where Nerva was the other imperial faction leader and EW states that his family and remaining loyalists minus some guards and household support staff were all killed and Nerva himself died. Garlean leadership is reverting back to to what it had been for hundreds of years, aka the Senate. A question is how many of the remaining Senators are related to the pre-Solus Garlemald from 65 years ago via family ties or even if we get an old NPC who remembers the Republic and the lost traditions or if they're all pro-Imperial appointees, and if any powerful non-Galvus families remain with a viable powerbase that aren't warlords in formerly conquered territories like Noah or Valens or the various ex-pat organizations like the Lemures or Ironworks. And who among these factions or what coalition of them are going to form to rebuild Garlemald into a healthier and hopefully more stable (almost anything is more stable than Solus's manufactured horror) governance. And how much of this the game will show after similar narrative beats with Ishgard, Doma, Ala Mhigo, and Eulmore.
I'd more expect an equivalent of a Pompey descendent or a Vespasian, some new character, than a surviving Julio-Claudian Titus. But maybe it's not a weird writing error that Titus has never been outright stated to be dead, only implied.

I have a feeling Landis, which was the first Garlean territory taken before they were called the Garlean Empire (making them Garlean citizens), may be making a move. In the Ogre Battle franchise they were a pretty big empire (and somewhat evil). Landis is also the home of the Magitek Academy, so if there was ever a place for a 2nd Empire to make a seat of power, it would be there. The devs will either just have Landis be the new seat of power for a Garlean Republic that's more friendly, or we're going to be seeing the rise of a new evil empire over multiple expansions.

My point was that my opinion is that it's a writing mistake since that's the only source we have for his continued existence and everything else in the game seems to at least suggest his demise. If he was more important to the plot and the current state of Garlemald, he would have been mentioned more than just once in a throwaway line.

If he's secretly alive, why has no one brought up him taking the throne, why is Nerva considered a possible "next-in-line" when his dad is supposedly alive, and why is a Garlean officer like Maxima going around representing the Populares, the faction that Titus himself created?

It's going to take more than that one line to convince me he's still kicking.

Also that line only confirms he was alive as of Stormblood. That's a whole lot of political turmoil still available for opponents to have unceremoniously lopped off his head. You really think Zenos wouldn't have?

We've reached a point where the story saying he isn't dead and is suddenly relevant would feel like more of an ass-pull than revealing that he died while nobody was looking.

I thought it was mentioned before that Nerva was last of the royals now that Zenos is dead. That's one of the reasons for recreating the Senate in order to form a new governing body for the surviving Garleans.

Have you seen Garlemald? The survivors were struggling, and all the more reason to remain hidden. Even Lyon calls both him & his son cowards in the Bozjan quest. But like I mentioned in the first page, he may have died during the final days after the guard failed to protect the royal household from the rampaging magitek. And Titus may have been one of the casualties.

I’m yet to be convinced that he died before Endwalker in the War of Successions in A Realm Reborn. Again, that line is proof that he didn’t.

Well some people are good at escaping so who knows. Titus is seen a coward so o wouldn’t doubt that he survived him. Look at Nerva, he turned into a blasphemy after 6.0. And people thought he was killed by him.

That just sounds like not only has he got a good chance of dying where nobody will notice him (because... you know, a coward is wont to hide), but that the remnants of Garlemald probably don't want him even if he does turn back up. Garlemald's in a real bad state right now, the last thing it wants or needs is a total coward turning up out of nowhere to declare himself their leader by birthrite.

For narrative reasons Titus coming back except for one reason just doesn't make sense when instead any role he could fill makes sense for a new character. Garlemald controlled by the Galvus family dictators has been done and through Varis, Zenos, and Nerva, firmly killed off. Nerva especially was the last blasphemy personification of trying to hold onto that seat of power and empire and political form of Garlemald even after the other remaining Garleans admitted it no longer existed and only some holdout former colonists from Corvus held onto the delusion that it could be restored, falling prey to the Blasphemy's tempering. The role quest hammers home that whatever rebirth there is for Garlemald, a Galvus at its helm isn't it.

I could see very old man cowardly Titus kept alive solely to do a small scene of 'old man reacts to new societal order' plus 'you'll never have power, confirmed one more time' - but there's plenty of Garlean characters to use for that.

What's far more likely is among the factions in the Garlean Senate trying to rebuild their country after the decades of Galvus (mis)rule culminated in the rubble of their country is another surviving Garlean noble family trying to set itself up as the new imperial family politically and/or the legatus-turned-warlords doing the same militarily, using the Might Makes Right legitimacy that Solus did to change the government. New character who could do everything narratively that a surviving Titus could without any of his implausible survival and Nerva's existence and completed storyline is far more likely, if the writers decide that's the direction the Garlean conflict will turn to.

I wouldn't expect much in the way of garlemald related storylines in the future. The devs seem insistent on sweeping them to the side as quickly and as messily as possible.

Sadly I don't think I'll ever get my Nuremburg Trials for any of the remaining Garlean higher-ups. Quintus offed himself so he can't faced trial and there's very few remaining high command and the only remnants are the few surviving Senators. And even the ex-Garlean slaves living right outside the city have only one side-quest bit before being brushed aside. But there's still four patches to go and later expansions - we returned to Ishgard, Ala Mhigo, and Doma to continue to address their lingering social problems after overthrowing their old oppressive political systems. Only the places in Norvrandt have a 'done' feeling to their political status.

I've generally had a feeling that I'd really like to see a Fantasy Nuremberg Trials storyline to really sit down and work through the various crimes done in Garlemald's name. And honestly, the lack of surviving higher-ups isn't the biggest hurdle; the surviving Legions are still around (even if we don't know them you could use them for worldbuilding and analogues; condemn Varros by having someone a lot like Varros, something like that), we've got ex-soldiers like Fordola and Lyon, and... hell, I honestly don't think the world we've walked is entirely above 'exhume the corpse and put it on trial', Pope Formosus-style. You could definitely write said story.

What I don't think is that said story would be fun. Sure, it'd be fun for us, people who voluntarily argue on forums about this minutia, but it's not exactly a concept with a lot of actual gameplay segments or comedy bits, and that's what most of the playerbase would need to get on board.

Where I suspect the Garlean story might be going is a bit of a faux-Reconstruction, giving us some quests about helping them get back on their feet a little while also taking the opportunity to learn a good 'what's next' from what amounts to the surviving leadership, to act as sort of a debriefing for the Garlean homeland as a story focus alongside the healer and ranged physical role quests acting as a debrief for their territories. The all-roles capstone puts them in a good position to be the crafting tribe, but... well, I don't think they'd make a crafting tribe that relies on getting every combat role to max level, so it probably won't take that train.

I had assumed Titus was the uncle that was killed in the war of succession.
I'm curious if it's a translation flub.

Honestly having most of the Garlean government due offscreen was a blessing based on how the story has handled the nuances of war crimes. Werlyt 2 electric boogaloo would’ve been an absolute nightmare to talk about.
