It's called switching to Legacy mode.
You'll want to turn on legacy controls. System > Character Configuration)
Legacy Type, then uncheck auto-fly/auto-dive so the camera isn't annoying.
Legacy mode, as the above described.
For added measure, using Back + Strafe left / right still causes diagonal backpedal, but if you don't mind giving up Q and E for movement you can use Back + Turn left / right. Turn left / right essentially mirrors what a controller is doing.
WASDQE gamers rise up.
Wishes do come true.
Legacy movement comes with its own set of problems, even if nitpicking.
Left clicking while moving now turns your character rather than just your camera which is worse for situational awareness or when roaming around trying to track down a beast mark. The A and D keys also now make your character run left or right in a wide circle as the camera follows rather than turning your character where as Q and E still strafe just fine. It does have its advantages though: No backpedaling for one, and when you initiate an attack as a ranged dps while moving, your camera doesn't swing around to face the enemy and your character's movement isn't completely reoriented and unresponsive to movement controls for a moment. With Legacy you just keep moving freely in the direction you were intending to go.
Honestly I wish we could have either a hybrid option or a little bit more customization. I prefer the camera control and character turning of standard but all the other movement of Legacy.
Swap the AD (Turn left/right) with QE (Strafe left/right), problem solved. ESC/Start button -> Keybinds -> Movement. Regular left-right strafing on AD and optional camera turn + movement on QE. If you hold your camera, then Turn left/right actually lets you run omnidirectional - helpful for a handful of things, like making your character face sideways without having to turn your camera.
That's all well and good, but I'm looking to keep both regular strafe Q&E as well as character turning in place without additional diagonal or forward movement A&D as the standard control model offers. Basically, I'd love the standard control scheme but with the option to run backwards rather than backpedal, and for the camera to not automatically reorient on its own when using a skill which his how it behaves in Legacy. What you describe in your post is something I have tried and is not what I'm looking for.
Indeed. I'm just agreeing with the OP in that it would be nice if backpedaling was a toggle rather than something exclusively on in Standard and exclusively off in Legacy.
Turning on Legacy control is the first time I give to anyone getting into the game.
I'm in the Legacy or bust boat. You will never convince me to use standard, unnatural to play the forward-bias and backpedal game.
Legacy was only annoying for one fight in the game and it's considered one of the worst in the entire savage series, E7S. You had turn your camera into the arrow direction and it's easier to turn the camera a little earlier or turn and move a step. Add phase made that a chore.
That's interesting, E7S is the only fight in the game where I enabled legacy. It made it so I could just tap WASD to instantly and accurately face for the teleport mechanic, which made it easier for me to greed casts/gcds.
I'm a Standard enjoyer, and even use the backpedal on purpose during some trio mechanics in DSR B). But I also use my mouse for 90% of my movement, so I sidestep most of the common issues with Standard.
So much this, as a healer I need to keep an eye on other people and run in another direction. I can't do that in legacy. If I want to run backwards diagonally and keep my camera looking behind me at the rest of the arena I can't do that. I would love a toggle purely for backpedal as I want the camera control you get in standard but wanna be able to do gaze mech etc without needing a 180.
If you want both options first turn on Legacy movement and then if on controller you click in the Left Stick whenever you are targeting anything. Now you have a toggle for both.
I'm used to just changing which WASD I'm pressing to create the effect of it only turning your camera.
If you want to turn around that much you can press S, one of the biggest benefits of legacy because it gives you significantly more time to start avoiding an aoe.Quote:

Here's your fix.
Legacy plus controller.
Camera and character movement are completely independent.
You're welcome.
Since this is a thing: Quick reminder that Legacy Camera needs a toggle to turn off automatic camera adjusting.
This thing, basically: https://imgur.com/a/a9OQBML
Standard control enjoyers rise up. Only occasion where I'll switch to legacy is Solo Deep Dungeon for kiting on a ranged job. It let's you fire at a mob directly behind you without spinning or having to mouse wiggle. Aside from that its standard all the way. I feel it offers way more control, especially if you mainly move using the mouse. Also legacy on a flying mount feels really strange to me.
My ideal control scheme would be standard without the backpedal but cant have it all I guess.
There are some good solutions here for controller users but nothing that works for Mouse and Keyboard unfortunately.
How are you managing this? Because when I hold down the left mouse button while moving in Legacy mode, my character moves forward in whichever way I swing the mouse rather than just moving the camera around me. Only Standard mode allows the camera to move independently of my character.
I can upload a video, give me a few minutes.

One thing I will say is make sure you're not accidentally holding down both of the buttons. I do that a lot (as a default) and it makes my character swivel to wherever my camera is looking. So long as I hold down left click only, my character doesn't move along with my camera.
I wish there was a true hybrid mode that combines both legacy and standard movement settings.
NP. I never really use WASD for movement unless absolutely necessary so it never crossed my mind that it might not have the same functionality XD Honestly my hand is on my mouse more than my keyboard for movement regardless. It might help to start using auto-run if you need that extra view-ability.
