Do you think SE gets bought by Sony? I hope not since Sony is more on the exclusive side and try not to multiplatform IP's sometimes.
They wont be getting bought by Mircosoft thats for sure. Lol
SE is only being sustained by a few products now.
the rest are not making the company enough money to warrant holding the rights too.
I say you should expect them to sell off more things and maybe suspect them undergoing another possible rebranding.
If Sony did buy, I can see Playstation being the console exclusive but not the sole platform. I don't think they'd want to abandon the potential profits from the PC audience on the higher profile titles.
There's a lot of speculation that SE is selling off those less profitable IPs to make the company more attractive to Sony.
As much as more money, resources, and less stress would be better. The more that I consider the current state of sony the more this is actually a bit scary. With Sony being more..... critical with Japanese titles that Nintendo has been seen as a better place for Japanese titles we might get more conservative with certain areas, which might be a win for some.
Also as western side of Sony has taken a bigger role in Sony I would worry that they might take a bit if Yoshi P's power over FFXIV as a whole.
Goddess this ancient rumour is like a stubborn Ascian.. it just doesn't die no matter how many times it gets quashed/debunked.
SE likes being multiplatform - they're not going to throw that away if Sony does come calling with a fat pocketbook.
SE's ethics department plus Sony's new stance on anime after they moved to califorina equals disaster for FFXIV. That said, this game is going to die one day; if it gets bought by Sony then I have a hunch that it will die in a pretty funny way, lol.
Maybe SE is just shifting theirs priorities to a few strong IPs instead of many mediocre.
That would free up resources to make the strong IPs even stronger. But I'm no expert and it is just my guess/hope.
I just know that FFxiv is generating enough money to sustain itself easily and even have spare resources to make other games (FF16).
Therefore I don't worry to much about the xiv future.
You know you're an IT person when you read the thread title and think of internet protocols and not intellectual property until you open the thread and go "oh" lol.
In a way if Sony does buy SE maybe they can give stronger servers for 500 wards XD. Also maybe better UI and other much needed QoL changes
Depends on what Sony chooses to do. Will they give the game a budget increase? There have been any number of times where YoshiP has said he wish he had access to WoW's budget so they would be free to do things they can't with their current budget.
Short of that, Sony would be smart just to leave the game alone and focus on any problems areas within SE. Mess with a successful game in the wrong way and you lose players. WoW's an excellent example of that. As much as the current players give Ion grief as Game Director, much of the decline really extends back to decision making that happened back when Tom Chilton was Game Director (and part of problem decision making was made over his head higher up in management).
That's one problem with a game's player base. They tend to set the most visible member of the development team as their target and blame them for all decision making when parts of the decision making are outside of the developer team's control.
Ghostcrawler (Gregg Street)was a good example of that when he was with WoW. He was just a Lead System Designer, very middle of the road position with a limited scope of job duties, but he loved to engage and talk with the players so he ended up the development team's mouthpiece. He then got blamed for every problem with the game even though he had nothing to do with the design decisions in most cases and Jeff Kaplan followed by Tom Chilton had been the Game Directors.
Kudos to both YoshiP and Ion for standing up to be that visible member as Game Director so their teams can work on their jobs.
That never will happen because the large PC playerbase will just stop playing.
At least I would because a discission like that would mark the beginning of the end.
Cross play is a big selling point of XIV and if MS would not have bought Activision Blizzard then a Xbox version would have been possible too.
I dont think that would be a smart move, unless they can both Provide PS5s and have Metric Data that suggests a MASSIVE amount of players have gotten off the PS4 and Jumped onto PS5. Otherwise that would be a complete alienation of their console playerbase.
It COULD still happen. Just if its still relevant today, I heard the big hurdle is that Microsoft would want/require GOLD in order for Xbox plaers to play online, and YoshiP doesnt want that. You dont even need PS+_ to play on Playstation. Just pay the Sub and have the game registered and Boom good to go
Whether it is smart or not, if you come out and say 7.0 will be the last expansion on PS4 and give the console players years to purchase a PS5 to continue playing on console, I think that could work. That being said, if CBU3 continues to be profitable to SE/Sony I hope that they will let them just keep doing their thing without injecting themselves into decisions.
While technically not wrong, consider the following...
WoW has been going for 19 years.
FFXI has been going for 17 years.
Dark Age of Camelot has been going for 21 years.
EverQuest has been going for 23 years.
Ultima Online has been going for 24 years.
ARR is not even 10 years old. It'll just about turn 10 next year in August.
So.. sure, the game may go away someday, but we may be talking about the 2040s or later, depending how the next 10 go for XIV.
SE selling well-known IPs to fund NFT projects is the equivalent of a respectable franchise owner throwing away entire chains of businesses so he can make slightly more profit on the crack cocaine market
It could maybe be a boost for XIV if the team then gained access to Sony's support studios such as Nixxes, Valkyrie, San Mateo and Malaysia studios. Recall Yoshi-P saying that one problem they have is getting new devs in and having the time to train them. Some support studios could off-load some of the work giving the team time to recruit and train more devs.
If it happens, I would imagine it will be similar to the Bungie deal, basicly acting like an independent publisher rather than a studio under Playstation. Can release games on any system they want, but could see a rule that they have to release all games on Playstation.
It's ridiculous Xbox players can't (and probably will never) play XIV without a PC or a PS just because they're affiliated with MS. If this happens when SE is a third-party, then I don't know how ridiculous things will get when they're owned by Sony.
If I'm not mistaken. Sony's working on a single (If not a couple) of MMOs games. I'm having full expectations they're going to be PS exclusives, which will tell us what might also happen to XIV if Sony decided to buy SE.
Again, this is just a rumour that's been constantly bandied about for years and never actually happened, then fades away until given another run around the block due to games journalists needing to fill a slow news day/cycle with some whisper they happen to hear, and the cycle repeats itself. Unless it's outright stated that a takeover is officially planned by either SE or Sony, take such rumours as just hearsay.
And for what it was worth, SE selling off a few NA developers they owned is not 'proof' Sony is circling. Nor is SE plugging NFTs proof either because, pretty much every company has jumped on the NFT bandwagon with little success so that's nothing new?
Never say never. People said the same thing about Beth and Microsoft. I'm leaning towards it happening but I'm not holding my air about it. Lets just say I won' be the one who's shocked if it does happen. And personally.. I rather sony buy them then the green box if I'm being honest.
It's done if Sony buys it. They corrupt and sink everything they touch. They own Crunchyroll and we all know that dumpster fire which just bought out Right Stuf Anime a big manga and merch store and banned adult content day one. If Sony buys SE expect all the sexy cat, bunny and dragon girls and anything with even a slightly based humor to it to be banned and replaced with cookie cutter woke saltines.
I hope SE stays as it's own. Sony has shown they don't really like their Japanese audience all that much with many decisions they've been making over the years. As the post above said, they corrupt much of what they touch now
I love Crunchyroll....but lets be real here, that website has been a broken mess for YEARS. The apps are still extremely outdated and crash constantly and only got worse under AT&T. Whatever your feelings are towards sony, I am personally glad Crunchyroll got bought out by them.
