"Lack of content"... Minor housing rant

So the game philosophy has always been to not shackle the player to the game. God if someone says housing is a shackle I'ma go nuts. Yea let's remove the auto demolish completely, see how many inactive players get to keep their house. "Make instanced housing": so do people think in game instances are magical no-cost "things"? No, instances like EVERYTHING ELSE IN A PROGRAM has a size, a space it takes up. Please stop talking about instanced housing as if it's something that can easily be implemented without a hardware cost associated with it. (Yes I do have a technical background)

Sorry housing rant. Back on topic.

If you can't find the content, FFXIV is not for you. This game should not negate a core philosophy just to appease those who want this game to be something it isn't. You sound like the people who want a quest log in Elden Ring. Stop it. Touch digital grass in another MMO that will provide you with endlessly repeating content. Sorry to break it to you, but there is no possiblity developers come out with new content faster than people are completing it. Especially not if you want any form of quality.

What's worse is that I've seen those exact same words reguritated from other threads. Low effort will always be low effort.

Really. Whatever "meaningful" may be really doesn't matter much does it? You're still telling people who are complaining about content to move elsewhere. When in reality there are different ways of addressing this.

As you said, there's a limited amount of things they can do, technical-wise. But let's take Eureka and Bozja. Why stop at locking them at their respective expansions when they have so much potential? Why not continue the stories that they clearly want to continue in older areas? Why not add stuff like menus and all that to previous instances to not only liven up old content but also keep them relevant? Or, hell, why not try doing something that can evolve with time across expansions without them being a done deal? Blue Mage exists, it's a good start. Surely there's better stuff than Fellowships, yes?

You're going around being too defensive of the dev team. Just relax, realize that there's no point in making another thread and, idk, use your neurons? I'm sure you're gifted with some if you have technological know-how like you claim? You can come up with answers like those just as easily. And if you don't like anything I said, come up with some yourself. It really isn't hard.

Why would it need to be 'objective'? Any given poster can only ever petition for something that they, personally, would like to see added to the game or changed. Sometimes other people will agree. Sometimes they won't. That being said, I'd personally like to see more meaningful content that amounts to more than just a five or ten minute daily or weekly task. As someone with little urge to play multiple characters or go through the MSQ more than once I would instead prefer to see new expansions a little more front loaded with content along the lines of Relic Weapons, Deep Dungeons and Crystalline Conflict. I personally spend most of my time engaging in PvP these days simply on the basis that it's dynamic and fairly easy to jump right into.

It's not about the current content itself but what people want the content to be. I'm reading the threads as people wanting something to constantly do everyday, and not about what the content actually is. Basically my interpretation is "we want an FPS in FFXIV". That isn't what FFXIV is as a game. It's always been optional sides with the only "required" content being msq. I agree with your point on Eureka especially because I really liked the story. But to continue would require man hours, software support, story support, assset support, etc. Nothing you add to a game stops being technical and will have an associated cost. Their focus should be first and foremost the main story because it is the basis the entire game revolves.

And I absolutely will defend the dev team not because of a specific love for them, but because I know how long a development cycle on products is because I'm an electrical design engineer. I work on projects with year long timelines on just 1 aspect of a system. It is incredibly unreasonable to expect a system as complex as a MMO can easily churn out enough new content for those who want something new.

I apologize for my first thread being one that has been reproducing like a rabbit. I see now how widespread it is and I shouldn't have added another. Not a real frequenter of the forums if my activity didn't already show. I simply started reading and wanted to remind people what the core philosophy of FFXIV is.

And that is absolutely fair, but my post was about FFXIV lacking content which by numbers, absolutely does not. The type of content also shouldn't be one that requires daily upkeep either.

Front loaded content is a fair request but I also believe that it physically can't be ready at the beginning of an expansion without a massive shift in the development priorities which I believe CBU3 believes should be the main story first and foremost.

The find another MMO remark was specifically for those who wanted FFXIV to be filled with tasks and chores you needed to log in daily to complete, which is what I saw a lot of comments on. Because if that were to happen, they cannot abide by their own stated goal of wanting people to play other games.

If you're gonna be so insanely critical then don't whine when people criticize how you present that criticism and feedback.
I really don't think anyone has an actual problem with genuine feedback, the issue is how it's presented and how incredibly touchy and easily offended the same people are.

This thread is literally in response to Kizuya's thread, but yeah they definitely had 0 emotions thinking "hmm yes I need to make a thread telling people to touch grass, find another MMO" because reasons. If you truly think that I was being emotional then sure I won't convince you otherwise. My literal second thread ever and already you can see it as emotionally losing my mind. I will concede to you that it does annoy me when people suggest instanced housing like it's something that can magically appear out of nowhere without any technical support backing it.

And it absolutely is a response to Kizuya's thread along with the many comments within. My reasons for telling people to find another MMO is because the philosophy of FFXIV doesn't fit with what they are looking for. Playing an MMO and wanting FPS. If you are looking at FFXIV for a shooter, then yes I would say you should quit the game.

It's gatekeeping in the sense of it being a common tactic to try and deflect and downplay criticism. It assumes that people hate the game and I believe it has been pointed out by a number of posters across numerous threads that just because someone speaks up against one or some elements of the game then that hardly means they're eager to up and leave.

In short, many of the complaints come from people who care about the game and want to see it improve. Whereas, from what I've seen, a lot of the people trying to stifle criticism will seek to either maintain the status quo at all costs or they're so easily pleased that even blatant issues such as the Hrothgar hairstyle situation will not ruffle their feathers in the slightest.

Or they mistake their own lack of caring for a particular aspect of the game as the default stance everybody should take.

Its not Deflecting or Downplaying Criticism by any stretch of the imagination to suggest X game might not be for you. You are still able to voice concerns despite anybody elses thoughts. One side can have theirs, and the other side can have theirs. Both Sides are Valid.
Ill never understand why one side is able to criticize and tell people its ok to Criticize and voice their opinion, but then tell the other side they aren't allowed to have one for not agreeing with you, and act like them not agreeing with you is an attempt at silencing you. Everyone is allowed to be happy or unhappy with something.

But let's take housing as an example: some people are happy with housing as it is. Maybe they have a house so they don't care if someone else that really wants one can't get one. Maybe they simply don't care about housing at all and never engaged with that content in any way. So what would change for them that they should be against improving housing to make it more accessible for more players? Nobody rips their house from their fingers if they already have one. Nobody forces them to engage with it if they don't care about it. "But then my lively neighbourhood would die and be completely barren" is something that sometimes pop up but many people say they like they neighbourhoods. Maybe they'd even have a livelier one because the people who don't care for it have an instanced house and only the people who do have one in the wards?
What would change is make more players who want to have one happy.

Or let's take healers: some people don't want to dps and it doesn't matter if it means that in some fights they'll be very busy doing... well, nothing. They don't want to dps, they don't do it and are happy not doing it. Some people heal in a way that they end up spending a lot of time healing or overhealing. They are happy as it is. Neither of these two really engage with their dps kit.
So what would change for their gameplay if healers got more downtime options? They apparently don't even have said downtime so it could be a button that paints the floor in rainbow colours and does nothing else for all they care because they do not use it now and would not use it then. The people healing me with Cure in wall to walls in EW dungeons won't engage with their dps kit, whether it's 1 or 10 buttons. And the fearmongering with "but if we had 4 instead of 2 buttons everyone would flame me because my dps sucks and kick me from parties and I couldn't even get my roulettes done" is nonsense when we already had a lot more downtime options in the past and people were more understanding instead of less and ToS still forbid harassment in any way.
But what would change is that healers who face a lot of downtime and 1 button spam could have more to do during the downtime they have now and will continue to have then.

The problem is not being happy, the problem is being happy and not wanting others to be happy when it wouldn't affect them negatively. And "but resources" can be used as an argument for absolutely everything and nothing would ever improve because the status quo then becomes too sacred to risk it and that is one of the major problems many people have: SE is making more money with FFXIV than ever so it can be expected that they use some of that to polish things that have been a problem for years.

Oh, will this be more of the usual "I want to criticize the game, yet don't want to see my suggestions be open to the same scrutiny myself." ghetto?

Whether people like it or not the game direction and philosophy have changed, and if the apparent overall job design trend isn't an indication that they don't really intend on taking another direction in the foreseeable future then I think the proposal of play other games and try other games is only really logical. Granted, I would say they are oft' presented in the most dismissive way possible. But it's just logical, and if some of the vitriolic comments either on this thread or on others is indicative to players' enthusiasm towards the community at a difference in opinion then I would also argue that it is a healthy proposal.

You are correct. But I think it's fair to say if people are expecting FFXIV to have constant task farming like Lost Ark, maybe they should play Lost Ark instead? Atleast for me, using the phrase "look for something else" means the core philosophy of the game doesn't agree with what the individual wants. Obviously one game can't be so perfect as to satisfy everyone, which is why other options exists. It isn't to dismiss the other opinion but provide the alternative if what I believe the game is doesn't align with what other people are expecting out of it.

99.999999% of the time it's not the company not being able to afford it, it's the people who approve the financial decisions to purchase things like this that don't get why it is a good idea to do it(happier players spreading word, potentially bringing in more and more players who will sub thus giving more money to the big wigs). And for that, it falls on multiple layers of people to get it TO those people who make the decision to approve or not, and if the pitch it properly worded to get the request approved.

Please stop talking about instanced housing as if it's something that can easily be implemented without a hardware cost associated with it. (Yes I do have a technical background)

Do you really have a techincal background? Are you aware that the bits that make up your forum avatar's thumbnail is likely larger than the file size of a large plot?

A datafile containing a manifest of items and their associated properties (coordinates, dye, on/off, etc) would be tiny, no matter your housing size.

Instanced housing is an architecture issue, not a storage issue.

It's not because the game is currently boring for me that i don't want to come back when contents will be released and i certainly won't lose my house which was an investment of multiple dozens of million gils just because of that stupid system so yeah i alternate between sub and unsub from one month to another, luckily my latest resub was last week so i have the new dailies to do for now.

I love my house and i spend a lot of time and gils on it so i won't let it go so easily even though it's frustrating to sub to something i don't feel like playing.

Is there one example of people treating instanced housing as something that doesn't consume resources? I've never seen it.

Yes and I'm sure you're right because I'm not a network engineer, I'm electrical. My point is that there is a technical cost to making instancing. Whether it's storage or architecture, there is a technical challenge. People seem to think they can push a button and magically make instance housing which isn't the case.
