Just way more logical for people who have friends to play with before summer starts than wait till after it's over.
Just way more logical for people who have friends to play with before summer starts than wait till after it's over.
What are these "friends" you speak of?
I heard someone talk about them once. I'll let you know when I find some what they are!
It's all a ploy!
If you think about it, most people start working after summer vacations. That means less people playing. Less people playing = Less people overloading the servers. Which means they can better control\gauge the server load of the data center travel system!
/tinfoil hat
i dont know in what world you live... but.. it isnt even summer or it JUST started depending on definition(meterlogical, or astronomical being 31st of may and 21st of june in the norther hemisphere respectivly)
patch 6.18 is planned for July as far as we know.... thats smag dab in the middle of summer regardless of definition
Most countrys also have Summer holidays for schools starting end of May to end of july and going between 6 weeks and over 3months(germany and the US as examples here(latest german schools start summer holiday is end of july(or 1st of august), going into mid to late september and earliest is end of may, going into late mid july ) which OBVIOUSLY will only impact people still going to school. which isnt to ignore tho.
Case and point "summer hasnt even really started yet if we go Astronomical.
at worst it will be implemented at halway trough summer, smack dab in the middle of summer vacation for a considerable number of school goers.
It doesn't matter in the long run.
Hum... I may have missed the calendar for the expected release date of 6.18 but I thought it would released before end of June... Since 6.2 should come mid august with the 4 months delay between two major updates, no?
Have to admit, I've got Déjà vu on this one. We had the forum argument about seasons last year!
thanks for that laugh.
people really need to remember the difference between meterological, and astronomical seassons.
Meterological cares about the weather(aka "meteorology"), so summer starts earlier. at the START of a month(makes it easier for calculations and averages etc)
Astrological only care about the Earths rotation around the sun, so it starts later, regardless of what day it is, at the Summer equinox(spring at Vernal equinox, fall at Autumnal equinox, and Winter at the Winter solstice)and seassons arent quite 3 months long as well(but slightly under and over by a few days each)
Besides the whole argument of when "summer" or any other season actually occurs...
I think after summer is a good time for it. I'm assuming it's not just going to be visiting other DCs but doing content with other DCs too(maybe a queue merge?). To me, after summer when people start focusing on work more or go back to school is the perfect time for it.
I don't know if anyone remembers queueing for alliance raids or frontlines during the fall/spring during the patches in between expansions, but usually, there'd only be about 8-10 hours worth of time where you could queue into those(at least on Crystal). When I first started it took me three days to get into the three alliance raids required for MSQ because I was logging in too late in the evening(basically had to wait for the weekend). If Cross DC also merges the queue, maybe it won't be so bad.
from what was said it will be very similiar to the current world visit system, just more restrictive, you WILL be actually phsicaly going to the other DC to do content there, This will remove you from your FC chat and CWLS(you can join other datacenters CWLS tho it seems) and must be initiated from the Character select screen. it is, 100% not a "merge of ques" it also realisticly cant be without some changes in how they handel things.
The problem really is that, while the datacenter in each Region are on the same physical Server(or at least on the same cluster of physical servers) they are divided do to the logical datacenter structure they are using. For all intense and purpose the Chaos DC and the Light DC, while booth on the same physical DC/Server, are basically 2 seperate "Servers" structure wise.
imagine it like a virtual machine on your PC, (or well 2 in case of Chaos and light) Booth VMs run on the same hardware, act however as indipendent machines that, for better or worse, do not interact with each other nativly anymore then 2 random PCs in the same LAN(if even that depending on settings)
What is likely happening is that they simply copy your characters "important" data over to the new datacenter you are traveling to, and set some flags to restrict actions that could cause problems.
That also explains why FC chat is unavailable for example, because they would need to route the trafic trough booth logical datacenters and so forth.
after your done, they simply copy the data they need back over, and remove the flags
you're supposed to go outside for summer!
Outside? Under the accursed day star? Not a chance!
While as people have already shown it will release in summer and to claim otherwise is nonsense (though not in line with every country's usual summer vacation times since down that road lies only madness anyway with how many countries there are where these things vary), this is by no means tinfoil. The developers have publically stated that the reason for not releasing DC travel as originally planned alongside 6.0 was the high influx of players. If anything were to go wrong with it during 6.0, it would have affected a huge amount of people, on top of the server congestion issues they had around expansion launch. So you can be 100% certain the lower load around 6.18 is the reason they release it there.
However, this is due to the usual patch cycle and I doubt has anything to do with which country does its usual summer vacation at what time. There are just too many countries in XIV's area of operations to plan around that.
As for actual speculation, I doubt it'll be a problem of server load, since the system will have waiting times associated with switching DCs during times of high server load.
However, back when world travel was first introduced, they ran into a bug pretty quickly, that left some of us stranded on worlds other than our home worlds for a few days. While they will no doubt try to bug-proof the feature as much as they can, there is no such thing as 100% certainty no bugs will occur. If fewer people are using the feature when it is released due to it being at the end of a patch when no other content comes out except for that feature, they can minimise the people affected by potential issues during the first few days.
As someone who was stuck on a different world with no access to retainers for a few days back then, I will also be *very* cautious about using DC travel the first few days.
Thank you for explaining. Made me really disappointed.
I have another question though. The way you described it makes it seem as if we can visit any DC. Is that true? When someone else explained it to me last they stated that the DC visit would be limited to geographical locations(so Crystal can only visit Aether and Primal, or JP DCs can only visit between each other and so forth).
Bah, who plays MMOs with others these days anyways?
MMOs are just the new Single Player games that require online connection for regular updates since nothing is ever finished.
Im not sure if its just because its text but some of these replies feel very agressive.
Back in January, Yoshi-P posted a Lodestone entry that explained how Data Center Travel is designed to allow for travel between physical datacenters (NA -> EU, for example). However, he also stated that this will not be enabled on release of the feature, due to "differences in game economy and values".
Although the most recent lodestone entry, posted near the end of March, doesn't mention anything about travel between physical datacenters.
Keep in mind that they still used the 3.5 month release schedule during those patches. They've since shifted to a 4 month release schedule, as stated in one of the recent live letters.
Didn't they also say part of the reason for waiting was because they were waiting on extra hardware to help handle the player loads and everything was on super backorder?
should have clarified, for now DC travel will be restricted to logical datacenters in the same physical datacenter as your Home World
So Light can Visit Chaos, Primal can Visit Crystal and Aether, and vice versa etc.
they did mention iirc, that they do plan on including Cross Region Travel at SOME POINT, but at least at launch, it will be restricted to your own Physical datacenter.(which is logical if they want to test load on the Servers)
Mid Summer, not start (no matter what definition we use, early-mid july is "mid Summer" (or late early at the best) summer starts 1st of june, or 21st of june, and as midsummer is 100% reliant on the summer solstice making the 21st of june 100% midsummer, anything after is either midsummer or "late summer")
Start of Summer 1st of June(or 21st of june) Midsummer is 21st of june(or the time around this) ..... Seassons are hilarous to talk about. but yay, 6.18 will release midsummer(if not even somewhat late mid summer)
raid tier will release end of summer tho thats true
you are right, should have said "every definition in the Western hemisphere"
I didnt think about that because its so far removed from the point/discussion that i simply forgot i
Ah, you should know I am just teasing :)
Listing releases by season is always a silly idea. Quarters are better. 2022Q3
Realistically it just needs to come before a major patch, so they can work out the kinks before the population returns. So an .x8 is perfect for it, doesnt matter if its summer, fall, w/e, people still gonna play...
Summers goes from 21st of June to 23rd of September, WTF are you talking about with 1st of June ? Oo We have solstice and equinox for a reason so use it... Or are you one of those claiming that EW was released in winter ?
And with summer starting 21st of June, you have until 21st of July for the update to release it before we're really in the middle of summer. It will probably not be released later than 12th of July to respect their schedule anyways. So early in summer, and 6.2 would release 23rd of August if I had to guess the date.
And with "your summer" mid summer would start 1st of July. 3 months cuts in 3 makes one month per parts, not one month and a half.
When its ready
AND there we are someone didnt read my previos post about the fact that Summer has 2 beginings, meteorological, and astrological(so has every seasson)
which is why i, in most caes, gave 2 DATES the meteorlogical, starts at the begining of a month, its based on weather, and is thus used for averages of temperature over a seasson etc(hence it starts at the begining and ends at the END of another month)
Astrological is strictly relative ot the Earths rotation around the Sun, hence its bound to the Summer solstice.
HOWEVER the only actualy "date" for "midsummer" is funnily enough, as stated, also the Summer Solstice, making that time, booth the begining of astrological summer, and the Middle of Meterological summer(astrological summer dosnt really haev a "midsummer", sure it has a date that lies in the middle of it, but that isnt "midsummer") HECK i say midsummer is horrible misnamed anyway in english.
I prefeer for example the german term "hochsummer"(which means high summer) which dosnt indicate any sort of "timeframe" and just that its the hight of summer, where its the hottest.. Aka Summer solstice.
Anyway.... just because you dont like using it, dosnt make the meterological Summer any less real, nor does your argument make the time around june 23rd not Midsummer/midsummer day.
Meterological and Astrological summer just server different purposes.
And to your jab at Endwalker release... If we go Meterological, then YES it released in Winter, barely, if we go Astrological NO it didnt release in winter.
THat isnt a problem here tho, as in either situation it dosnt release "after summer" but early to middle of summer(which isnt the same as midsummer, because the english language is a mess)
The thing is, meteorological is not really used by people(I don't know for your country but all calendar use astrological in my country and people refer to calendar for season.), it's a recent change compared to astrological so when you plan to release something like a game, you plan according to the date that are accessible to the maximum of people, that's why devs use the astrological season when refering to season in announcement. That and the fact that meteorological make no sense in some country. And I will add, that I've never heard about meteorological season before all those debates on FFXIV because before those debates, I've never met someone who used meteorological probably or have never heard of it and this has the highest chance to be true.
