About *that* mysterious being in 6.1 (spoilers)

So, very unsurprisingly, Zenos's avatar will play some role in the upcoming storyline. I'm curious about people's predictions of how this will play out.

Is it evil? Friendly? What could its name be? Will it end up being an ally and maybe helping us fight Golbez or will it be an end boss itself?

Write your thoughts :D personally I think it will be an ally of some sort. "Bereft of saviors" makes me wonder if it was/is looking for someone to save it.

I'm expecting the avatar is probably going to be the critical factor that's going to inevitably make the whole Azdaja rescue plan go sideways. If it's really our shard as Yoshi hinted, I could see it being the 13th's equivalent of Ardbert; a soul who may have had direct involvement in their world's fate and is seeking to remedy it by any means necessary.

I do find it a bit strange that it mentions being "returned at last" because avatars were described as just being a manifestation of a voidsent's power as opposed to them actually crossing over to the Source. Perhaps it had somehow lost its physical body and ended up using Zenos' body as a replacement in the wake of his demise? It's also been stated that voidsent can't truly die while in their home of the 13th as they have no Lifestream left to return to.

As far as Golbez and the fiends go, I'm expecting them to be the plot for the trial series as opposed to having any direct involvement in the MSQ.

I think he appeared exactly like Artbert called by Hydaelyn at the beginning of ShB.

For me, he is the Azem of the 13th reflection.

He who lives will see.

Zenos intentionally making a contract with WoL's shard would absolutely be in character for him, so I agree that's probably what he is.

I won't be surprised if this Voidsent ends up being the 13th Shard of Azem. Considering they need a plot reason for WoL to get stronger in Season 2 storyline or atleast next expansion story, WoL having regain his/her 13th shard self will be one possible way for the WoL's power up moment.

And somehow zenos’ obsession with us got creepier. XD And this means he almost used one of our own soul shards to kill our friends. If accurate, of course.

I don't think so. The whole presentation with Golbez seems a lot more than just a side quest series typical of past trial questlines. There are good odds that this may be the lead up to 7.0 as the new overall threat. With the Paragons/Ascians gone (or greatly weakened due to all the Unsundered being defeated), there's no one to stop the Void from invading other shards since no one but them can travel from shard to shard. This would tie into Y'shtola's attempts at trying to figure out how to travel to other shards. But we'll see.

As much as I'd love another soul merger (let's go 10/14!), I have my doubts after the emphasis on dynamis in EW. Course, now that Meteion is (supposedly) not a threat any longer maybe it doesn't matter anymore.

I dunno. I'm sure Golbez will be in the MSQ after that setup but I don't think he'll be our main villain for season 2. FFXIV has had cameo antagonists before like Xande and Gabranth, but they've never been the main, big bad guy. I think Square would want the big bad to be 14-original like the Ascians.

The Fiends I feel absolutely are going to be the trials. I suppose it'll be more tied to MSQ than previous trials, like the Eden raids were in Shadowbringers.

For some reason I think Golbez will end up being a shard of Nabrieles or Deudalaphon, as they can survive the Void and their offices are unknown. Not to mention that'd make them Azem's "brother" like Golbez was to Cecil in FF4.

i think given their speech of "redeeming our world" i think theyre the voidsent former heroes.

Until told otherwise, my working theory and hope is that 'Golbez' is the elder brother of Cyvla(Cyella), who has wielded both a DRK and PLD weapons and has white hair.

Okay, I REALLY like this idea, it's awesome. Perhaps they'll incorporate her into the next main story thing, or there'll be special dialogue if you've done the ShB role quests.

Especially if they used the hint that 'Cylva' was also a false name and that her original name on the Thirteenth was something else -but as it starts with 'C' even if it stays Cylva it's close enough to a gender-swap Cecil stand-in. The other toss-up for me is if 'Golbez' (Theo-<em>something</em>?) carries over the dragon partner and is allied with whatever became of Azdaja. I agree that the new Trial series will be the Four Fiends from IV. The only drawback to linking 'Golbez' to Azdaja is just how optional to the MSQ said Trial Series would be.

if the theory I have about Season 2 focusing on the other Shards and each one represent a certain FF game by making them the FF14 version of that FF world ends up true then what we see now maybe just the beginning. Consider we are getting flashbacks to what Emet said, exploring the other Shards maybe the focus on Season 2 while also providing us new location on the Source as well. Considering how different each civilization is in certain FF game, it will even fit the part of Emet's words about surprising use how unique they are.

Entering the other Shards may even require the WoL to go to these new locations in the Source due to possible lore stating that they need to be at a specific location on the Source for the portal to X and Y Shard to open up and work.

This may even given them opportunity to introduce certain FF game special things as well such as Blitzball or atleast a Civilization that has Blitzball but we can't play it for game mechanic reasons.

With Y'shtola openly wondering whether or not Elidibus may have spirited away more folk from the 13th, I can't help but question if maybe the voidsent that became Zenos' avatar was one of them considering its mention of being "returned at last" implied that it hadn't been residing there.

If we're to assume that the thing is really one of our shards, that makes me wonder further if it was an act driven mostly by lingering sentiment towards Azem since Elidibus did seem to recognize our soul back in 5.3, but dismissed it and perhaps he simply felt it improper for a fragment of a former friend's soul to be left languishing in a place bereft of its natural order.

Can he really see the color of souls? Wasnt that a very rare talent which only a few Ancients could even use? My memories can be quite bad but I dont remember where exactly he recognized us?

About the topic: My guess is that there will be a rejoining if the voidsent is our soul shard. I am not sure though if its going to be a friend or foe.

Still I hope that we dont go shard hopping so soon...we still have so many things to see and do on our world. Also I am not sure how I would feel about us going to these unknown worlds, solving their problems too.

Remember 5.1? It did not only have a cutscene, but a whole solo instance which basically served as an introduction to the Weapons sidequest.
I think we will get one more MSQ scene with Golbez, the same way Gaius came for a cutscene in 5.2 to ask for our help against Ruby.

Regarding Zenos' avatar, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Zenos took possession of the avatar's "body".
His speech sounded more like a lament to me. I did not hear it as "Ah! finally back"
but more like "Oh no...I am back again...and my friend is not there to entertain me anymore".

Even though though most Ancients can't see our soul's color, a lot of them mention that we "feel" like Azem and assume we're a familiar made by them before we even bring up that excuse so they're likely sensitive to the aetherial signatures of different individuals.

I assume that's why Elidibus seems to briefly get a sensation of familiarity (And we briefly appear as an Ancient in his eyes as happened with Emet-Selch at the end of 5.0) as when he approaches us at the Crystarium at the start of 5.3, but dismisses it.

I'm not sure why he would refer to the 13th as "a realm bereft of saviors" or why he would say he was "returned at last" when he's only been "dead" for an extremely short period of time.

But for the love of everything writers, please just let him stay dead. I'm interested in this new story arc but that interest is going to be shot if they can't even keep their own word after blatantly claiming he's deader then dead this time.

My theory on Zenos' avatar is that it's somehow what remains of Azdaja.

I have no evidence for this beyond 'they're both mysteries existing in the same sideplot', but frankly, things that seemed even less plausible at the outset of a story have proven true by its close in this game.

I just wanna note that I love the design of the model.

I just rewatched the scenes, and their only words are :
"And thus I am returned
To this world bereft of saviors"

They are not saying "returned at last" or anything indicating a long time has past. (+ time between patches in XIV is always a bit vague)
And "world" could really mean anything. What is the world to their eye? Is it the shard? Or simply the world of the living?

At first I really thought Zenos would just come back as Zenos. But now I start thinking that we will never see his body anymore.
His soul surviving through the avatar would absolutely make sense to me however. I wouldn't even be mad. Even less so if the avatar is indeed our shard.

According to Y'shtola's explanation, summoning a Voidsent is very similar to the Scions' journey to the First (or Elidibus' partial summoning acts as the Warrior of Light). Their soul travels to the Source, where it needs to find a suitable vessel or host.

In Zenos' case, his body would have been the vessel for the Avatar's soul while enshrouded. When he died in Ultima Thule, the contract would be broken, severing the connection to the Source and forcing the Avatar back to the Thirteenth. Hence the 'And thus I am returned' line (there's probably a bit of the Mandela effect at work in how people remember this line, but this is the actual quote in both scenes).

There are still a couple of outstanding Ex trials still needing to be done, including Anima and the Magus Sisters. I'm sure that we'll get to fight the Four Fiends at some point, but if we fight them too early there won't be any opportunity to develop their characters properly. I think it's fine for them to throw out plot hooks and let them simmer for an expansion or two. I'd rather not retrospectively learn how cool or interesting they were only after we've killed them off. Also, Rubicante needs to heal your party as part of his encounter. His ethical fiendishness has always amused me as contrast to Scarmiglione's deviousness.

I think that Shard travel in general has a lot of potential, but doesn't necessarily need to be done in a structured fashion (i.e. this expansion will be about the Fifth). I think I'd appreciate it more if we started rift jumping to access other parts of the Source, encountering continents on other shards organically along the way. For example, what if an alternative to crossing the seas is to travel to a Shard where it's just landmass instead and to walk across? And given that the Source affects all the reflections (i.e. if the Source is destroyed, so too are its reflections), could you deliberately alter something about the Source to beneficially alter the reflections?

I'm almost certain that the voidsent we see in the stinger scene is one of the "champions" of the Thirteenth, although it may not be a shard of ours (or anyone we know). We've already met Cu Chulainn in Void Ark as another example, and this one seems more inclined to angst about its existence, much like Ardbert did during his hundred-year purgatory.

I'm curious if the covered eyes is symbolic of anything. It's an obvious "See No Evil" sign, which immediately makes me come up with a speculative backstory that involves the "champion" deciding to ignore some evil being done (perhaps the corruption of their comrades?), and their current form with the covered eyes is an expression of their regret.

If the patches go the same way as the previous expansions (not a given, since 6.1 to 6.5 is all supposed to be build-up to 7.0, rather than the usual of x.1 to x.3 being the clean-up ending of the x.0 expansion), there will be three Trial fights for the Trial series, plus one solo duty. It's possible for one of the Four Fiends to be fought in a dungeon (eg with Stormblood's Four Lords and Genbu), but given the "one dungeon per patch" we're going by now, I doubt the devs will do a full dungeon for non-MSQ. Unless, of course, that dungeon is in 6.2 and the MSQ introduction to the Four Fiends Trial series...

In any case, with the three EX Trials of the Four Fiends (hypothetically), and the three existing EX Trials of Zodiark, Hydaelyn, and Endsinger, that would be six EX Trials, leaving one more Trial plus EX version for the usual full set. This could be an Anima rematch, or a Magus Sisters rematch, but not likely to be both. Or maybe we'll fight all four Fiends as Trials, or we'll have more Trials that don't give EX mounts, but that would be far too different a workflow for the devs, I would imagine. Anyhow, I find it a little odd that the only significant difference between the avatar's "new" appearance and its original one with Zenos is that you can actually see its eyes now.

I still get the vibe that its circumstances were somehow different from that of a typical reaper avatar.

What I am confused about is: 6.1 is supposed to take place several months after the events of 6.0 (as said in an interview) but the avatar seemed to have *just* returned to the void? Wouldn't that have actually happened several months ago when Zenos died or are we seeing a flashback? The cutscene did say "Meanwhile, in the Thirteenth" and nothing to signify that it was a flashback. I suspect we'll learn more about this pact between Zenos & this avatar especially since Yoshi P said there was a reason he became a reaper in the first place. I wonder if this will make up a lot of the 6.x storyline with 7.0 maybe being more void stuff and/or Meracydia.

Makes me wonder if this has anything to do with voidsent being merely an "essence" controlled by the reaper and not the actual being, the being still existing in the Thirteenth even while its avatar is summoned to our world. "The Nullstone, which says it was used to destroy a voidsent's vessel and nullify any pacts made with it, severing all ties to the corporeal realm." Why was the avatar returned *now* and not after Zenos's death in 6.0. Did it have some unfinished business with Zenos first?

So I don't expect a trial to be tied to the MSQ this time around as they were previously included in order to provide us with a spectacular closing.
I actually believe each of the 4 fiends will be a trial. What I am more curious about is Golbez himself. Maybe he will stick around until 7.X...
Also worth mentioning: we have no confirmation yet regarding what the deep dungeon is, neither on what/if we will get new exploration content in this expansion.

Regarding Anima and the Magus, I agree I can't imagine them being left as those easy encounters only. My expectation is to see them again in the criterion dungeons. Or maybe those will actually be tied to the four fiends....

As Shadowbringers established, time doesn't flow the same way in each shard. It is possible that months on the Source is just a minute on the 13th.
Also, we have no idea how long it would take to travel from Ultima Thule (wherever/whatever that is) to the Void.

Ah right, that must explain it then.

They stated in one of the post-Endwalker interviews that there was going to be a " detailed complementary story" with ties to the Endwalker MSQ that is not Omega or any of others that were explicitly mentioned as patch content, so I'm thinking this whole void storyline is what they were referring to and that it's going to meet its resolution sooner then later.

I'm expecting Azdaja to be a void-corrupted dragon as a parallel to Golbez's shadow dragon from FF4.

Remember how Zenos runs off with our body in Garlemald? I remember thinking that shouldnt have worked since Ardbert's Corpse couldnt be posessed by Elidibus till after the end of Amaurot. Initially thought that was only possible because Zenos mightve been a fragment of Azem but if the AVATAR is the reason he was able to pull that off then it would make every bit of sense for that to be our missing shard from the 13th.

Some say it could be Azadja but I dont think so. Besides the fact that dragon scales can resist aetheric corruption and their eyes provide a wellspring of energy, a dragons soul expecially one of the first brood would be unsundered too being from the dragonstar originally. On top of that I could see Azdaja surviving in the void as dragons DO have the ability to evolve based on their enviroment so she could have adapted to be completely resistent to corruption.

As it stands its also shaping up that the 13th seems possible to be the gateway into cross shard travel since its the only other shard that has had at least consistent contact with the source (The first has also had lesser but still some contact with the 13th.) If the thirteenth becomes the next expansion it would be the most apt, its one of the most popular topics of FFXIV and it would also be the most immediate to deal with since the events of the first have shown just how a flood works and that its possible to reverse a flood with the right approach in Eden.

Or Azdaja saved Golbez and others and theres possible survivors in the void. The Throne of Flame (likely Rubicante) speaks of an oppertunity arising that they've been waiting 10 millenia for. Could be possible they're attempting something that could repair or reverse the flood of darkness on the 13th if it doesnt involve invading another shard or the source.

My running theory is the avatar is Diabolos with a vendetta.

As with other expansions, there has been a “need” to funnel players into doing older raids and..well.. Void ark series hasn’t quite gotten the Bozja treatment yet..

I suspect it will tie into the relic series for 6.0.


But hey, who knows! I’d be happy with anything else to be honest.

Was it Y'shtola who said they'd need to make multiple trips and not spend too much time at once inside the 13th? Or something along those lines anyway. Either way, my immediate thought was that exploration could potentially make for a really cool deep dungeon.

Personally I would be disappointed if 13th was downgraded to deep dungeon.

I'm curious if the covered eyes is symbolic of anything. It's an obvious "See No Evil" sign, which immediately makes me come up with a speculative backstory that involves the "champion" deciding to ignore some evil being done (perhaps the corruption of their comrades?), and their current form with the covered eyes is an expression of their regret.

I've heard a lot of people with the theory that this fella is a corrupted champion, and I am on board with this theory. I like your idea about the design, it's very cool! I'm excited that we're gonna be interacting with more "intelligent" voidsent, cuz we know they are probably more receptive to conversation than sin eaters. We'll see where it goes.
