Am I bad for preferring White Mage?

This is going to sound really stupid; I know that right up front.


I've been reading over some of the threads here, especially the one that talks about which healer is easy and which is more difficult.


There seems to be a dump on White Mage. "It's easy." "It's for noobs."


I like White Mage. I feel like a real healer, as opposed to someone who puts up barriers.


Does that make me a bad?


tbh, I've been co-levelling both White Mage and Scholar. I like Scholar because I like pets, but don't like the shield healing.

You're not. I like White Mage's class fantasy too. I just dump on it all the time because Astro is more powerful without any of the drawbacks in almost every single way, and it's legitimately frustrating how few ways the job has been allowed to grow over the last 8 years because "it's *~supposed~* to be so simple!"

White Mage is a job that anyone's allowed to enjoy because your fun is -your- business. The only way the average FFXIV forumgoer's opinions on White Mage would matter to you is if you aren't enjoying playing White Mage as much as you'd like and either 1) really want to see if other people feel the same way, or 2) want to figure out what it is you're not enjoying about it by seeing other complaints. If neither, don't sweat it!

If you feel bad that others seem to be upset with how it plays, understand that most criticism you see, whether it be White Mage, or another aspect of XIV or any game, is criticized out of love, or investment. Games are for fun first! We're just invested in making it the most fun it can be. It might differ, it might not, but I do think most of the longtime forum goers do have the average player's experience in mind to some degree, despite how it may appear.

Some people get very salty if WHM is considered tenable at all, even with the amount of time it spends at the bottom of the meta.

Ignore them. Play what you like. Even if you're planning to do savage raids, healers are in short enough supply you likely won't have issue getting a party.

Whilst I have a tendency to switch to other healers as and when it's needed. WHM has always been my favourite because it feels the most 'Healy' if that makes sense. Less emphasis on subtleties, more direct and straight forward potency.

Play what you enjoy. I played dragoon back in ARR when it was considered a meme (loldrg, floor tank, etc) because they frequently died due to the massive animation locks on the jumps, but that didn't stop me from loving it.

Don't let other people decide what you can or can't play.

Well white mage also really feels like the definition of the traditional healer, unlike clunky scholar or unorthodox astrologian.

People in this game really like to say something is easy to put others down and put themselves up.

"WHM is so easy, I play SCH instead"
"healing damage is so easy, I just cast dps instead"
"dungeons is so easy i do savage"
"savage is so easy, i cleared ultimate"
"ultimate is so easy now, it was harder in 2018/19/20"

There are things you can say is easier or harder for analysis purpose, for example WHM is easier to learn but playing well is pretty hard, while AST might be harder to learn but easy to play once you learn. But if someone says "xyz is easy", it doesn't make sense, where is the line for easy or hard? It is only a meaningless phrase to make themselves feel better, and you can ignore it.

And anyway, picking something hard when there is something easy is the actual bad decision

Is it about that other thread asking which healer people find easiest to play with? You're not bad to prefer something, like anything at all, and WHM isn't bad because it's approachable. People playing more "complex" Jobs obviously feel an even bigger rush when their opener or clutch pays off, but that by no means gives them the right to say they're objectively better just because of their Job choice.

Play what you want and play it well. Mastering something you like is easier and more fun.

I don't think many people have said "WHM is for noobs".

Most of the comments on WHM being "bad" are from past WHM mains who enjoyed the class, wanted to master it but as they got better at the game they discovered WHM doesn't have enough depth and has multiple conflicting issues. They just want the class to feel enjoyable and rewarding at all levels of gameplay.

WHM fills a gameplay preference for players who prefer a focus on raw healing and dps without juggling cards or pets, in the same way SAM and BLM satisfy players who just want raw dps. The difference is BLM and SAM are engaging, well designed classes that are very rewarding to master, while WHM doesn't really do anything special even if you play extremely well. It doesn't shine at anything.

There's nothing wrong with liking WHM. Lots of people here like WHM. I used to main it myself at one point. They just know it could be even better and want to push feedback for that.

It's fine, good even. I see so many ppl max leveling all classes and lording it like it's some kind of actual accomplishment (Amaro mount is the only reason lol). Anyways, I see far too many folks that do not focus, and are tolerable at best on any given class/job. I'd much rather focus and master one, and be gloriously epic at it (well, as glorious and epic as I'm capable of :/). For me it's SCH, for you it's WHM. I'm fine with all manner of gameplay within reason but new players are not the only reason for "DF hell", lots of all-80's out there just blindly smashing buttons...

WHM's hella fun. So is WAR. Neither one is hard to play. I love playing both.

I will say, I've been playing this game for eight years and I've never once felt that people honestly disapprove of me playing these Jobs. Like, not even once.

My preference for pretty much every role is the "simple" job. I main Warrior, have mained Dragoon for years prior and my go to Healer and Caster are White Mage and Red Mage, respectively. I've never had the slightest problem getting into content, PFs or statics.

So, no. Don't worry about it in the slightest. Play what you enjoy and strive to be good at it. You'll offer more to your team playing a job your enjoy than forcing yourself to play the "better" job.

When people criticise aspects of certain jobs, that doesn't necessarily meant they suck but rather they feel improvement can be made. I've been quite critical of WHM's new additions in Endwalker; specifically Lilybell because I worry it won't be nearly as useful as the dev team thinks. None of that criticism is to say WHM won't be able to handle content though. It absolutely will.

Yes enjoying WHM definitely and objectively makes you a terrible player as well as a terrible person.
You should feel ashamed to enjoy a job in this game. In fact changing role wouldn't be enough to make an amend for your dispicable joy of playing WHM. You should uninstalle that game and reconsider your life choice and the impact you have on others.
Liking WHM... what's next? Enjoying the game?

But to answer your question; No, absolutely not. There are aspects of WHM I find harder than SCH/AST, mainly weaving windows/mobility compared to those two, but everyone has their preferences.

Don’t follow along what most others would say, especially with EW changes.

WHM is beautifully designated to deliver raw heals at little to almost hardly focus on your other abilities. Which is why I like to call it the gift of “situation & spatial awareness” that we can relate to tanks; predict & when is convenient to use powerful abilities to counter that.

If anything, it’s one of amongst my mains that I’ve no regrets choosing on.

No job is objectively bad based on class fantasy. You pick whatever you like to play. People have different preferences in gameplay, and sometimes choices also depend on APM, straightforward style, proc-based gameplay, and animation effects. That's completely fine. Don't let others affect your opinion on what you want to play.

The only complaints about healers I see these days are how the job itself evolves in relation to the expected encounter design. That's a completely separate problem that's not tied to any one healer in particular.

its a game, and you are supposed to enjoy a game and have fun. so, shouldnt matter what you play, since we are all playing cartoon characters in a fantasy setting... dont let what others think get you down.

at the end of the day, maybe they are just jealous they cant enjoy it as well

Same here. I play all 3 jobs but do the MSQ/dungeons/trials/Ex and savage on WHM first. It's just my favorite.

Sometimes WHM just suits your mood. Whenever I want to relax and heal a trials roulette or normal raids roulette I'll go WHM. It's definitely not my usual choice but I don't ignore it by any means. It gets the job done just fine and Im okay with that.

No, class fantasy is a good reason to pick a class. You want to enjoy the animations, flourishes, and style.

Besides the differences in challenge between healing classes is very low; they're all easy compared to the easiest DPS role. It's like a child in a Power Wheels Corvette telling a kid in a Power Wheels Jeep that they're pathetically slow, while real cars zip by on the road. Indeed WHM can be tougher to optimize than the other healers due to more limited mobility.

People like to insist that they are "better" for playing a "tougher" job in MMOs, ignoring how every MMO is designed so that thousands and thousands of people can clear tough content on every class.

Nobody is bad for liking a class. Fun is subjective and everyone has different preferences.
So if it's fun for you and you keep playing it, it's a good thing.

But fun and in need of improvement isn't mutually exclusive.
People criticize WHM for good reason and while some of it has been taken care of with EW, like extremely limited mobilty and awkward weaving, WHM has a long history of getting neglected because it has to be *~simple <3~* - by constantly bringing down the skill floor AND skill ceiling so nobody has to feel bad just because they can't play at skill ceiling level in casual content. Although playing it at high level like 95+ is challenging, the fact that WHM is forced to do less the better you get makes it feel braindead. You're even discouraged from using Lilies for healing unless absolutely necessary because they are a dps loss without a transition dump. AST and SCH still feel decently busy at highest gameplay level, especially AST.

Objectively speaking, WHM is "bad" as in poorly designed.
But it can still be enjoyable. WHM is my go to healer for roulettes because it not only gets the job done, it's a freaking dps powerhouse on steroids in dungeons and regulary out-dpses proper DPS classes on big pulls.
I may also occasionally do Ex/ Savage on WHM if I haven't healed in a long time because there is not much to remember. As long as I remember what the boss does, it's easy enough for me to use my Asylum, Lilies etc. accordingly while performing well enough. Not 95+ well, but well enough to be an asset.
AST and SCH has a lot more to keep track of and is not as easy to go back to after a long break from endgame healing.

Not at all. People will have their opinions on how a job for them feels to play, what they like and don't like about etc. and what they feel works and doesn't work.

By contrast for all my complaints, problems and issues with what they've done to SCH and how it has not been addressed in 6.0 (except some of the fixes are on Sage instead), I am not bothered when anybody says they enjoy playing Scholar.


Not everybody wants complexity and to me that's always been the advantage of having multiple jobs for each role. Personally, I like complexity, but I'm not going to call anybody a "noob" for preferring something that is less complex.

Nope, at the end of the day healers are more or less the same. WHM was built for some people. These days i lean towards AST or SCH just because i like to have things to do between GCDs to keep my mind busy while not much is happening, but WHM is what i default to when i'm back from a long hiatus and need the extra throughput while i remember how to play again.
