How about just making it so the target reticle simply stops at maximum range, eliminating the possibility of failure in this move.

Already been confirmed for Endwalker, was talked about in the latest Live Letter.

Congratulations!
You (and all of us, too) are getting exactly what you're asking for, and in less than a month!
It's the double tap to use that I'm most excited for. That's how it works in GW2 and it feels so much better to use ground-targeting in that game because of it. Can't wait for both changes!
It'll certainly save my life in PvP for those times I lose my mouse, ha.
Fantastic. Now I can start actually using it in dungeons and raids. As it is now, I'd often fail to execute it due to being out of range, or waste too much time feeling around for the range limit.
They're adding a quality-of-life change to address this problem, which I'm grateful for since it means I might finally start using this action again.
Yeah, that's the Quick Cast I'm used to from League of Legends and Dota 2, and Guild Wars 2 has the same system contrary to what SkyCake said. It's not hugely different from what SE is implementing, but it still saves a button press.
Does it means the range will go at max and not further away, that will make it usable more easily even if the mouse is far more away than possible ? (like GW2)
