I can almost see them keeping Patience and Mooching, except using them for increasing yield and/or collectibility rating. For example, if you want a collectible fish with X rating, you have to mooch with a different collectible with Y rating. In order to get Y rating, you need to be using Patience.
Other than a direct, simple, multiplier on fish caught, perhaps the HQ proc would give a free Identical Cast (?). -

It'll likely remain completely unchanged, only that the previous requirement for mooch (and mooch 2) will be a fish of sufficient size. It won't be HQ when it hits your inventory, but if it's above the size threshold that currently marks it as an HQ fish it'll still be eligible for the actual Mooch action.

Honestly nothing will really change that much. Whether something is NQ or HQ is independent of the size of the fish so instead of using the percentages to decide whether a fish is NQ or HQ, Mooch will likely be usable when a fish is in a certain upper percentile of its size range. Actions like Patience and Patience II will raise the floor of the size range so that the likelihood of being in the Mooch range is high, which is pretty much the same function as before.
The same size range could be applied to Ocean Fishing too, where sizes that fall into the Mooch tier are given double points just like HQ fish are now.
As for the achievements, they said these would be adjusted to work with the new system so you don't have to worry about them being removed. -

I expect them to change the name of Mooch II to Mooch and remove the cooldown while keeping the GP cost.
Ocean fishing scores will no doubt be adjusted.

I just like to see them finally deal with bait and create a specific bait storage, if the database is so stretched could even move bait to a key item list to reduce inventory.

I'd love to see them do away with bait entirely and just use lures. Have generic Freshwater Top, Middle, Bottom and Saltwater Top, Middle, and Bottom then call it good. The three different gig heads work better for different types of fish, so why not use different types of lures for different types of fish?
I'd love to see Goldsmith be able to make all the lures again with HQ items give an increased chance to get larger fish. -

Well, I'm working on bigfish, so I have a bait for every fish that might end up rotating in due to weather. Once I catch every fish that needs this bait, I'll be able to get rid of that bait.Quote:

I'm 100% with you on reducing baits and lures to FW or SW small, medium, large, and big game so perhaps certain catches from the various types of hole would count as a specific type of bait. Something like catch A from location X, catch B from location Y, and catch C from location Z all count as FW small, etc.
I'm cool with differences in catch rates between lures and bait, but I think we could do away with carrying multiple baits/lures *and* accumulating 5-6 different critters from each fishing hole/trip.
Perhaps I'm off my rocker with this. Something about the idea of having fishing be a holistic thing where it serves itself in a (mostly) self-sufficient cycle is very appealing to me. -

Size will almost assuredly be the thing that dictates if a fish is moochable or not. It's already the main metric for it, and would better align with existing skill descriptions/functions. Patience II's description will actually make sense with that change. (Its buff lets you catch bigger fish of any fish you catch... not big fish, like Cinder, Ruby, etc)
I could see a bait crunch happening, but most of the need would be in ARR baits and like, 30% of them you don't need anyways.
Don't think Ocean Fishing will change much outside of the double points being tied to the new metric they'll use for the fish. There's a desire for a Kugane boat with new routes on the opposite hours of ocean fishing boats out of Limsa. That would probably trigger an experience rebalance.
There's a lot of talk about what fishing could look like in 6.0 and honestly it's split in the "more of what we got" or "go back to SB/HW" which is considered some of the best fishing in the game so far. Some skills that have come up would be like, Double Hooksets to go with Patience, Single use Patience(s) (so like, Chum, but as patience). Even some more wilder ideas that lean into optimizations, like a skill that lets you Cut your line when a fish bites, so you don't have to do the Quit cancel or just let it go to save time. In the end, we really don't know what direction SE will go with fishing.
... that being said, Snagging should die and leave treasure maps to spearfishing.
Really, I'd like to see more investment in clearing up how fishing works and making the knowledge of fishing more approachable. There's so many things that people do wrong with fishing because there's no central in-game thing that makes certain mechanics clear.
Ex:
Patience II doesn't help you catch "big/legendary" fish, you just catch physically larger fish. I've seen this confusion a lot.
Chum/Release doesn't help in ocean fishing to trigger dolphins/gulls.
Fish Eyes only works on non-legendary fish in ARR/HW zones, and only removes time reqs.
... and the list goes on. I think a lot of folks frustrations with fishing would get addressed just with better in-game explanations.
