Why can't there be an automated log-out after 60 min of afk?

It's getting harder and harder to log into my world each day, always having to wait because it's full. When I do get in, I see dozens upon dozens of people who are AFK. Some I have seen being AFK for hours on end. Why not have an automated log-out of characters after 60 min of AFK time? It does not take long to log back in, so I don't see this as a great inconvenience to anyone, I hope you consider it.

It exists, but only during big releases like expansion launches. I honestly don't know why they turn it off.

It's 30 minutes during expansion launches which is maybe a bit harsh the rest of the time, but it could probably do with being extended rather than turned off completely. Two hours maybe?

I think 60min is sensible enough... if someone is afk for that long, it's probably invested in something else rather than the game.

New player here. Trying to level.

It’s really disheartening to spend 5-30 min in q to pop into a major quest zone with half or more of the player base AFK.

Depends on the time of day. A lot of times people will queue a duty and then tab out and do something else or sit and watch netflix or clean the house up waiting for it to ding. And at many times of day it's easily possible to queue for over an hour.

That's why they turn it off..

There's also the problem of people circumventing the afk timer like back in SB where they had to manually restart the servers every few hours to kick off the people who wouldn't let their character get logged off.

This situation is getting rather annoying. Some of us have a strict playtime; waiting for 20-30 minutes stuck in login screen because the world is "full" is ridiculous, and it will force some players (that includes me) to skip several days each month or end up un-subbing.
I do get the excitement of the surge, but it soon will become an issue if they don't address the horrible queuing times.

I’d like to point out that the queue isn’t because of players NOT logged out, but instead of players logging in at the same time as you. Thats why when servers shut down accidentally, you’ll log in to queues of 2000+. 2000+ people are trying to log in at the same time as you.

Yeah it’s really weirdly worded but I figured that out a few months back when some EU servers were crashing badly.

Thanks for the clarification, however; my point was related to the limited login capacity in general and server population, they are already working on it as we speak because of this surge, which is great.
Worlds Congestion

They've actually turned on the afk log out thing, probably with 5.58 yesterday. I hadn't realized, had gone afk to grab a drink, realized I was also hungry so gone longer than I meant, came back to find myself logged out. Perfectly fine with that, cause I would have logged out had I realized I was going to be gone longer than a few minutes to grab a drink!

Oh no definitely. It’s just a tiny misconception like that has the ability to spiral - I’ve seen calls for people to be banned because they’re preventing people from logging in by staying logged in themselves (which isn’t the case at all! They’re two separate mechanisms that are both bloated right now)

Going by Yoshida's statement, servers are now hitting the point of capacity that people are stopping others from logging in now simply by being in the game, as a separate issue to the normal login queue.

They wouldn't be implementing the forced logout if it was just a matter of letting people in slowly.

Unfortunate. Typically, log in queues are staggered log ins to prevent server overload (as they mentioned). The simple act of just logging in temporarily ups the load to the server (like turning on a light switch temporarily increases the amount of electricity output before stabilizing).

I guess what’s going on now is all the lightswitches are being turned on in a megamansion, and only one is getting turned off every so often before being immediately turned back on.
