Please do not ruin summoner! I heard that summons are being removed

I am being told by multiple streamers that summoner is getting a rework and Bahamut and Phoenix are going to be removed from summoner.

Please do NOT remove those from summoner. Currently, those are the backbone of summoner. I absolutely love the summoner Bahamut and Phoenix and it would totally suck for those were to be removed. What is the point of summoner without these summons?

I main summoner and played through the entire game as summoner. I was really looking forward to be getting phoenix all throughout the game and was excited when I was able to start using her. Now I am worried because I hear that Phoenix and Bahamut are going to be removed.

Not only that, now I am going to have to entirely relearn summoner after 6.0.


DJDogba Gaming told me that there are multiple summoner mains who are pissed about that. Me included. He mentioned one streamer who spent 20 minutes complaining because he mains summoner and hates the fact that they are removing these things from summoner.


If you remove anything, most summoners would rather have the Egis removed, NOT Bahamut or Phoenix. I put a poll up online and 97.3% agree as of 3 PM EDT



I was told that Square Enix listens to the fans, but obviously they are NOT listening to all the summoner main's cries out there since this news spread.

I am going to wait to see what happens and what, "Summoner is at the breaking point.." means or if it is just a miss-translation, if it relates to the crunch they are doing to the damage on all jobs but I am nervous!

SMN does get a rework, probably even from the ground up, but there hasn't been any details on it leaked yet since it is far too early for that.
I expect it to happen along with 6.0 which would mean that any details about it will happen by the time Squeenix uploads their "job showcase trailer" which usually shows arround one or two months before release.

Also, don't believe anything people tell you on the internet, take it as you will.

Mr.Happy's e-mail interview suggested that there would be major reworks coming for it.
It didn't necessarily mean that the pets themselves would be removed, although most people thought as much (it's just supposition at this point).

Thus, we shall see in the coming months what they're actually planning for it.

Personally, as long as Egis themselves remain (not necessarily as pets), then I'll be satisfied.
Especially if Egi glamours are still in the cards.

I am the other way around. I would rather have the big summons. Bahamut and Phoenix look so cool. I would gladly trade in my Egis for more DPS from Bahamut and Phoenix and also summoner spells

It’s okay OP. I don’t think they removing Bahamut and Phoenix. I do believe Summoner is getting a major rework though. The job hasn’t been in a good place for years. It’s very clunky and all over the place. Summoner has an identity crisis and I hope after this rework we will finally know what summoner is in ffxiv.

Maybe they don't play it because they feel it's "broken" to begin with?

But broken is not the right word... I'd say clunky is the best way to describe. But then, even the notion of "clunkiness" can vary from person to person.

I mained SMN pre ShB, and was really excited to see the Demi-Phoenix added in the job action reveal... But in practice, the job's rotations, actions feel disconnected, disorganized... It's even a struggle to set the keybinds in a way that it makes sense with muscle memory. And then there's the whole situation about ghosting and the weird demi-Enkindle movement thing, those just add up to the convoluted playstyle.

The idea of 2 trance cycles with downtime between them actually sounds great in theory... And maybe it would be amazing for a job created from the ground, but they inserted that in a structure that was already too busy to begin with.

But again, that's my personal impression. Despite what I think about Egis, I don't know if they are going to be removed or not, but given the hints on Mr. Happy' interview, it's heavily hinted that they won't work or be presented as they are now if they stay. The fact that they had to stop developing a cosmetic system in lieau of an alleged "breaking point" possibly means that they don't want to make something for a system that is bound to change.

Leveled SMN to cap in ARR (as I wanted to learn it and SCH, but I had a worse computer so I didn't feel comfortable using it as a main), eagerly started to main it in HW once I figured out how to abuse DWT. Loved how it played in that expansion, but wound up hating it vehemently and playing it regardless in Stormblood (swapped to bard a lot and hated that for Stormblood Bard-specific reasons. My static went through a lot of weird swaps but we cleared everything with Triple Caster + SAM). Kept it as a main because liked where it landed at Shadowbringers launch. Feel it doesn't take much to fix from where it is now.

Yoshi-P saying that "Summoner's mechanics are reaching a breaking point" implies to me that they're going to do something between a button trim/merge down and a full rework in Endwalker. They also confirmed they've postponed Egi Glamour to fix pets, and that the Avatar System they used for Reaper will NOT be used for Summoner at all. That does NOT mean they are removing pets. It does mean they're focusing on them specifically.

I've got a lot of recent posts going over what's wrong but suffice it to say, current summoner works. The changes it needs now when compared to how god awful it's been in the past are not even in the same league. We all want Egi to improve, so if they're finally focusing their attention there then we're likely to see the glow up they deserve soon.

Just don't bring back SB Bahamut and we're golden.

Re-learning a job's functionality is something that comes hand-in-hand with big reworks, there's no way to avoid it other than... not doing the rework to begin with. Happened with MCH into ShB, and will probably happen with SMN, and MNK at some capacity. It's not like raiding or Savages will be available right away, so there's time to adjust... Or even adjust to the new abilities across the board, as there are cases of jobs, like BLM, that despite not having a heavy rework, has its playstyle changed a lot through the level tiers.

MCH did it and it had a clunky and complex rotation, the job changed completely.
The ammos were removed, the heat gauge completely changed and what remained was the 1 2 3 combo that wasn't random anymore and the Wildfire that was a bit more consistent.

I think you don't understand "Breaking point" and "Broken".
SMN is clunky like MCH with SB Flamethrower or Early ShB Anatman.

People complains a lot about Egi (Or SCH Fairies) and how slow they obey the commands. Sometimes even ghost it.
SMN has instant casts, which means you should be able to freely move, right?
Wrong, Bahamut is lazy and prefer to follow his summoner rather than stay idle and attack.

This is definitely what I think Yoshida means by "breaking point", SMN currently works but adding more could make the job unplayable or with a rotation that will not be fun anymore.
I played a lot of SMN during HW, summons were slow but you could work with that. SB was better, but ShB... I don't want to touch it anymore.

I saw the title of this thread and was reminded of one of those phising scam tells you get in game from time to time. "Square Enix should not be doing this at such a sensative time!"

Breaking point does not mean they're saying it's clunky, it means they're saying they can't add any more skills without making the class feel incrediblely bloated

I went from level 1 beginning of ARR to MSQ completed from August 17, 2020 to MSQ completed Early-March-something, did extremes until 5.5 dropped, did 5.5, all with using summoner. I did not even touch another job until I completed MSQ in March. And then I did a little with Red Mage. I really prefer summoner and how it works now—especially in high levels. I will give you that now since doing 80 content, now lower levels summoner feels boring, but that is what Red Mage is for.

Summoner did not really get anything new from 60 on other than upgrades to Dreadwyrm Trance and Firebird Trance. They could keep going with that. How about the third stage be Lunar Trance? Perhaps with Lunar Bahamut at 90?

Basically, that is what I was hoping for anyway since Lunar Bahamut came into the picture at the end of 5.whatever-it-was just before 5.5 and in 5.5. Lunar Bahamut is absolutely beautiful.

If you really want to add a new ability to SMN, just combo off ruin

I think what you're not understanding is the danger of adding a 3rd trance, summoner suffers a lot from dying with it having a two minute rotation that resets to the begining if you fail, also combos could be an intresting mechanic but it's definitely not enough to keep the average raider satisfied. And yes most people agree that there classes suck at least a little before level 80, that's a deeper problem because FFXIV has trickle-down balancing, where balancing is focused on the high end.

That'd be dope af. Like Ifrit as an actual Hellhound, Garuda as a winged hawk-woman much like her smaller adds, and - well forget titan, or make titan a cone based DPS summon and looking like a proper golem because at this rate there is never use of one during any high level combat, which makes it obsolete.

I can't see them getting rid of the actual summons, given... y'know, the class is called Summoner.

But, I can see them nixing the pet system and just having the Egis appear when you use oGCDs. I'd honestly like it if they just made it so that Carbuncle was part of our character model that sticks to our side like a well-trained dog would in real life while our weapon is drawn, and instead of having Ruin and Outburst, our basic GCDs are instead Carbuncle's attacks. When Arcanist becomes Summoner, they get access to Egi Assault I, which is a single-target oGCD, at level 35, you get Egi Support, which is a defensive buff, and at level 45, you get access to Egi Assault II, which is an AoE oGCD. You can then assign whatever Egis you have, from the Primals you've already encountered in game, to those abilities as you see fit. Instead of making your summon do a powerful move, Enkindle can instead make your next Egi Assault/Support transform into Demi Assault/Support, the Egi becoming a Demi Primal for that move at an increased effect.

When you unlock Demi-Bahamut and Demi-Phoenix, Carbuncle gets replaced with them and they move about as if they were part of your character model, just like Carbuncle does. I'd also just make it so that Demi-Bahamut is summoned with Dreadwyrm Trance, to make it consistent with Firebird Trance, and replace your GCDs with similar moves to Fountain of Fire and Brand of Purgatory.

SMN feels at the same point that MCH did an expansion ago. A bit bloated, a lack of clear priority and overall not as streamlined as it used to be. That being said, the last things the devs want to do is ruin a job or make it less fulfilling to play.

Summoning Bahamut felt like a huge OSHI moments for most SMNs that they were proud of. Phoenix probably less likely so but still a cool thing to have. With pets not being able to take enmity (or damage) like chocobo companions, they lost a lot of their uniqueness.

If Reaper has any inclination of where SE may go (often times new things / items show the devs are trying out something) then maybe the EGIs will be more temporary summons and Carbuncle be the star of the show. I doubt it but its a potential.

I do like how the three egis play a bit different (Ifrit - melee DPS, Gaurda - AOE ranged DPS, Titan - balance of both) but the fact that titan can no longer "tank" kind of made him less viable compared to just DPS. I think this is mainly where SE needs to decide on the identity of the job for the future.

I would like to see the job keep its DOT nature (vs BLM bursting and RDM fast casting) with the pets and oGCD stuff keeping the burst damage up. As for Bahamut / Phoenix yeh they are super cool but they are an extra step at this point. Phoenix is super nice to have the AOE healing regen though (coming from a healer).

I hope summoners get the ability to also have the (6) base avatars as either glams or upgrades (Ifrit - Levithan, Gaurda - Shiva, Titan - Ramuh) or something of the sort if their lore is based on the main "terrestrial avatars" . Having (6) different avatars with unique abilities would put the job in a hard spot to develop and balance for the future.

I wish they could have their identity follow the expansion themes a bit more to keep things fresh. But who knows, I hope they get the love they deserve. I miss playing my SMN but right now it just doesn't feel as fluid as the other casters.

It's exactly this. The rotation is already over 2 minutes long, so adding more to it just means more bloat. They need to trim back the job substantially so they can develop it further. Adding another trance just means, as was said, extending this already very long rotation even further, when it already has one of the longest rotations in the game.

This being said, it's too early to tell what they have planned for summoner, they only thing we know is that egi glamors had to go on the backburner because any changes they make now would not be compatible with the plans for the job in endwalker.

So this could mean that skills like egi assault are one and done summon animations and that your carbuncle or whatever else doesn't follow you around anymore. This would be easier for them to balance than a traditional pet class and more in line with most final fantasy games where summons are just spells rather than controllable creatures. But it also doesn't mean that egis are also going away entirely either as they may serve some other purpose or be brought about in the code of the game differently so that it would just cause more work to add more glamors now that then have to be recoded when the job is reworked.

Dreadwyrm Trance reworked to summon Bahamut at level 70. Summon Bahamut removed. Trances become generic 60 second cooldowns and no longer reduce cast times, 90 if another Trance is added, with no resource cost. Trance buffs and Bahamut and Phoenix have 25 second durations and only one trance can be active at a time. Summoner reworked to become Bard 2.0 with you cycling between Demi-Bahamut and Demi-Phoenix, and a third Demi-Summon if they are added.

Enkindle Bahamut and Phoenix cooldown increased to 15 or 30 seconds and share a hotkey and cooldown.

Wyrmave potency increased. Ahk Morn potency decreased. Scarlet Flame becomes an AoE and Revelation potency decreased.

Egi's removed and Egi Assault I reworked into summoning Emerald Carbuncle/Garuda Egi to do some AoE attack. Egi Assault II reworked into summoning Topaz Carbuncle/Titan to put a barrier around you. Egi Assault III added where you summon Ifrit to do some single target attack. Enkindle reworked to change effect depending on the last Egi Assault you used.

Ruin III's and Miasma's cast times reduced to 1.5. Ruin II and Ruin IV both become an ability with a 15 to 30 second cooldown with 2 to 3 charges and reduced potency that no longer reset upon using Egi Assaults.

Aetherpact removed with Devotion taking it's place. Devotion used by the Summoner now.

Sorry, the context is a little confusing here. Are you saying you started playing summoner at the beginning of 2.0 when the game re-launched and have stuck with it through every expansion, or that you started in 2020 with Archanist as your class and you have stuck with it through the entire plot?

They're beginner, a quick intrusive glance at their minions/mounts/gear show they mainly played normal content.
Last event mount they have is from December, last event minion is Ardbert so it's safe to say they started during 2020 summer or before.

Whole topic is a "Nuuuuh don't remove this I like it despite 3/4 of the community hate iiiit". With a bit of "I heard it from this Streamer whose uncle works at Nintendo".
Summons won't be removed, pets might be heavily reworked. That's a safe assumptions since Egis are not working properly.

I'm hoping they rework SMN since it is pretty borked. I am a SMN main and did Savage (took a break this tier). Been playing since 4.3. SMN should not be doing as much DPS as BLM and even with the potency reworks I think it isn't enough with the amount of mobility we get. Not to mention it doesn't really feel like a SMN class compared to other SMNs in the FF franchise.
Also I would laugh if they took pets out and made them into a glamour item for the class.

Currently summoner as a job is reaching somewhat of a breaking point when it comes to the overall play mechanics, so we've halted work on Egi Glamour for the time being in order to shift focus. There is a reason behind this, but we can't share the details with you at the moment. When the time comes, I'll be sure to properly share that information with everyone.

So let look at the first sentence: somewhat of a breaking point when it comes to the overall play mechanics. As the jobs evolution has moved on, they have just added on mechanic on top of another; DoTs, Pets, Aetherflow, Trance, Demi-Bahamut, Egi Assaults. Some of this mechanics are showing their age now. Some are most likely on the chopping block.

• Aetherflow has gone from the jobs tempo keeper to just Energy Drain that is a resource for Fester and Painflare.
• DoT went from Miasma, Bio, Bio II, Shadowflare to a condense single cast Tri-D Miasma / Bio combo doing background DPS.
• DWT and Demi Bahamut are a hold over from 4.0 but not as grand and somewhat disjointed when paired next to FWT/Phoenix.
• Egis have evolved from Garuda / Contagion, Ifirt Auto, Titan Solo to Single Target / AoE pet with more interaction but still feels weak, unimpressive.
• Devotion still is locked to Egi and makes it limiting.

Clearly we can see some items that could be cut from the job in this list.

Now consider that Summoner playstyle since 3.0 has always built up to something. Heavensward was AF + Fester + Fester + Fester = DWT.
Stormblood was (AF + Fester + Fester + Fester = DWT) + (AF + Fester + Fester + Fester = DWT) = Demi Bahamut.
5.0 lost that playstyle with Trance replacing Aetherflow as the tempo but has no big payoff, yes you have Phoenix but it's just a part of the rotation, not the big finally.

The next sentence we can focus on is: "we've halted work on Egi Glamour for the time being in order to shift focus. There is a reason behind this." Very vague to be sure. We can gather they are shifting focus from the current Summoner build as mentioned above but to how is unclean. They've halted Egi Glamour, the system to assign a new palette skin over current Summon Spells 1, 2, 3. One possible answer is they found a way to add new Egis, maybe by cycling through Egi pets in something of a rotation. Maybe Egis are going to be just a burst damage spells. Or as some suggest maybe they are just going to toss Egi into the trash bin.

We got and answer to a question that only opened the floor to tons more question.

Also not even considering the fact that Egis are heavily themed. It works for Carbuncles to replace them as a glamour, sure, because they don't scream "elementlal"... But think how weird would be to see a Ramuh-Egi casting wind spells, or a Sephirot-Egi using fire abilities. They would also have to glam the skills themselves if they want to add anything other than more colors of Carbuncle. And I suppose this would be a novelty.

Just a quick observation and someone can correct me if I am mistaken; from a narrative sense, The Demi summons can be cut from the kit without changing the lore and the content of the Summoner story, the Egis cannot. Demi Bahamut is something that you get without mention in the plot. I haven't gotten to the end of Shadow Bringers yet, but I doubt Phoenix is any different.

Not that I think they should be culled, just that they could be without any changes.

The reason I say that should be the core is in spite of what you've described being SE's 'intended' design for Heavensward and Stormblood, the mathematically best rotation in both 3.0 and 4.0 reflects that exact core loop. And 5.0 also reworked Summoner to establish that exact loop, albeit with some holes here and there. Every cooldown and mechanic Summoner has been given since ARR has been adjusted to best 'fit' that exact core. SE refused to commit to it in a meaningful fashion until 5.0, where they took out Aetherflow and used Energy Drain/Siphon to pad out the usage of Fester/Painflare to lower Summoner's burst potential (which is exactly what that core relies on), and the manner in which they did that is what made the rotation feel disconnected, because Aetherflow itself was the foundation on which everything else was built.

That said, I've gone over those details three times in the last three responses I've made to your posts, and I do not consider any of that controversial. Upon further reflection, here's what I think is what Yoshi-P is actually gesturing at: Pets need to be and are going to be standardized.

What does that mean? Well:

• All Autoattacks, Egi Assault Actions, and Enkindle Actions need to function similarly to one another.
• Mechanically, actions will reuse the same Ranges and Area of Effect shapes as much as possible, so that swapping animations is easy and can be plugged into the rotation cleanly.
• The animations can be different between pet types, but the goal here is to keep the total number necessary to make for each pet as low as possible.

What are the ramifications of this?

• Unique actions within each pet are going to be removed. This means we'd say goodbye to the following: Inferno, Slipstream, Earthen Fury, Earthen Armor. This I would consider a virtual guarantee as they make things awkward to glamour over.
• All pets will be remade into a single type. In other words: No more melee/ranged split. Demi-Summons are all ranged already so I would expect Ifrit-Egi and Titan-Egi to undergo major reworks into ranged Egi if this happens. Doing so removes half the animations that have to be made for glamours period in the long run, so I would consider this to be the most likely change.
• I wouldn't be surprised to see the return of the split-damage mechanic that originally featured on Machinist's Richochet in Heavensward. The way that worked is it applied a baseline level of potency, plus additional potency that was divided evenly amongst all targets within range. This would be used on the single-target DPS pet only, and that's only if SE wanted to eliminate single-target animations for Egi assaults as well (which I do not expect in the slightest). It saves about 2-3 animations per pet but the scalability of that is a problem given there are over two dozen candidates for primal-egi.
• Titan-Egi might be straight up removed. I don't think this is likely, but it's a possibility. More likely he will gain 'utility' that can be slapped on a regular attack, such as a Slow or Stun.
• If we don't lose Earthen Armor, then we're getting it as a seperate cooldown next expansion. Please look forward to it.

Remember, this is purely to cut down on development work. As it stands, a complete pet usable as any Demi or Egi currently would need the following animations:

• Auto Attacks: Three (Ranged AoE, Melee Target, Ranged Target)
• Assaults: Four (Melee Target, Melee AoE, Ranged AoE, Ranged Ground AoE, Shield)
• Enkindle: Three (Ranged AoE, Melee Ground AoE, Melee Cone)
• Other: Devotion, Summon, Dismiss, Movement.

That's Thirteen animations total, and I'm assuming duplicate actions there too. Ifrit/Titan EA2 and Auto Attacks are reusable.

If they rework pets as I would expect, we'd see the following:

• Auto Attack: Two (Ranged Target, Ranged AoE)
• Assaults: Two (Ranged AoEx2)
• Enkindle: One (Ranged AoE)
• Other: Summon, Dismiss, Movement.

Doing so cuts the number of animations down to Eight. That's a third of the potential work on new pets gone in an instant. They could probably cheat and enable/disable the use of extra particles to simulate AoE effects or enhance the animations for Demi-Summons if they wanted to trim it further too.

And if they're going to have to remake Ifrit and Titan to make this happen, then they might as well glam up Garuda too, and give us demi-sized Egi like people have been asking for.

That is the rework I'm expecting to see come to life in the job action trailer for SMN, and it's purely to make Egi Glamours easier in the long run. None of it has anything to do with altering Summoner's current rotation, but it's perfect within the context of Mr Happy's interview.

I can also see Dreadwyrm Aether going away... I think it's a bad design to have a mechanic - especially one that is displayed in the job gauge - completely negated by a lv72 trait.

If it would stay as it is, the most elegant thing to do is to have that level 72 trait straightforward saying "You don't need Dreadwyrm Aether to summon Bahamut anymore" and taking that element out of the gauge.

You... have seen or at least heard of the massive threads of salt every expansion in the healer forums, right? I dunno about other jobs, but they definitely don't listen to healers. =p

That said, a SMN rework could do wonders for the class. How they will do that is anyone's guess, really. Hopefully they won't screw you guys over like they do to the healers every expansion =p

Though it may work for right now, it is expected they are going to add something new in 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and so on. I honestly expect them to drop aetherflow on SMN and replace it with timed charges for Fester and Painflare. DoT may be on the chopping block as well. I do believe Tank Egi is on the chopping block but should be replaced with a summon type spell that cast a shield on the player.

As for one Egi, though possible it seems like a step backwards from were we are today; two egis' with a clear distinction as to what situation to use them on, something that has been need since 2013 in my opinion. Further more doing a one Egi system would be a reason to have new Egi Glamour ready by 6.0, not put it on hold. I've made feedback on this years back, that it would require the devs to decide which Egi they want to be Range and which is Melee. For example: aside from Enkindle, Pre 5.0 Titan was ready to place into Melee Glamour because Ifrit and Titan had very similar attack animations. Ramuh Egi is very close to being able to add to Range Glamour by adding an Electric AoE zone and Enkindle design.

Reality is we are just guessing at this point and won't know anything until the media tour and 6.0 comes out. Even job action trailer doesn't tell the whole story. Guess I'll see you in 5 months to discuss this again lol.
