So yeah, I've been stuck in some jail cell for like an hour here with no help. What the hell is going on? Why have I been banned? Can someone help me out? This is crazy.
I don't know what's going on.

I don't know what's going on.
send a ticket to the support desk and a GM should come to see you. they will explain why you are in jail.
Thank you for posting in the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.
We apologize for any inconvenience that has occurred when playing Final Fantasy XIV. Unfortunately the issue you are describing is not a technical issue. We will be moving this thread to "General Discussion".
Good luck with your adventures through Eorzea!
the mods dont lock you up in jail in this game for no reason you obviously broke some kind of rule and they have proof of it hence why your in jail, all you can do is wait for a GM to show up in jail and to explain why your there and what your punishment is
You might have been banned for using bad language. Even if it isn't aimed at anyone in particular and even accounting for the mature language filter...if somebody sees it and reports it, you will absolutely be punished for it.
I know a lot of people who choose to play it safe, myself included, by keeping dialogue with other players to a bare minimum. It makes the game much quieter, but it also doesn't risk losing a considerable amount of invested time and money.
The ToS states that your account can be terminated for any reason or no reason whatsoever, you agreed to these terms by accepting to play the game.
It's very unlikely you've been "banned" for no reason. Understand that using inappropriate language, even aimed at no one in particular, is considered a violation of the terms you've agreed to. My advice is don't engage with people in this game at all and keep social interactions to a bare minimum, for starters. It's only ever safe when you personally know the people you speak to. Let's hope the GM will reveal the violation to you.
Sigh, players should be instantly told why they're sent to jail even if it's vague reasoning. It wouldn't be difficult for SE to put it in a dialogue box that appears when they enter the area so that players have -some idea- as to why they're there. Many players have ended up there having no clue what the place even is, and then have to wait for ages for a GM to explain what happened.
And as others said be mindful when you speak with people you don't know. For example you can end up in jail for dropping a F bomb even if you didn't say it with the intent to hurt or anger anyone. SE only care that you dropped the F bomb, not why.
Why do they keep throwing these to general discussion? As punishment?
I was joking. I just think it’s funny they keep being like “not a technical problem” and instead of closing the thread they just send them to the least helpful section of the forums so people can just tsk them for being naughty and then snowball the conversation so eventually it’s some obtuse conversation about morality.
Here's the thing. That they keep having to transfer these threads from the technical issues forums shows that the experience of being sent to jail can appear as if the game is malfunctioning. Your character is teleported to the location without your control, you can't leave, you're not told what the place is, why you're there, and you often have to wait a long time before a GM comes along and tells you what is happening. It's not surprising that many players think something is bugged. No where in the game are you told that the jail even exists. I was max lvl in HW before I even found out the jail was a thing, and I only did because of a post in reddit.
Which in itself is strange when one considers the sort of themes that the game seeks to explore and the way in which the development team pretend to be all for bringing people from all over the world together.
At the end of the day, I think that the current terms of service are simply not fit for purpose. They are very easily exploited by players with a grudge who can and do absolutely get innocent people banned due to claiming to be offended by specific comments.
I know people who have jokingly said 'don't be silly' on this very forum and been hit with a ban because a moderator decided to treat it like a deeply personal attack.
I hold the firm believe that the terms of service should be tweaked to account for different game regions and a 'forgiveness' system should be in place to ensure that all but the most horrific of acts are removed after a set period of good behaviour.
A lot of people like and enjoy the game but do not want to interact with the community due to the troubling number of individuals and groups who seek to weaponise the terms of service in their existing form.
I agree. They need to look into every law in other countries to adjust the ToS based on that regional difference. It's a crying shame some people are afraid to interact with others out of fear of getting reported or banned. I've had my fair share of individuals trying to set me up and report me but luckily I'm smart enough to understand what they were trying to pull off.
How can you say you’ve been wrongfully banned, but also say you don’t know why you’re there?
I think it's 3 strikes you're out but dunno if any of those could include a suspension. It's probably just a warning.
Just like this in game support item! I mean, if that is your problem, how you reading it?

Since FF11, SE's GM is known for quick act on player harassment and it is pretty much same here.
If subject of ticket you submitted is related to player harassment, the GM usually respond within one hour and usually quick action on the suspect.
If it is something minor the GM will give you a warning and they don't put people in jail for minor verbal insult.
So in OP's case, he is very likely cyber stalking like creeping in someone's house where house owner is unable to get rid of.
SE takes cyber stalking as very serious offense and always immediately have their GM taking action
I wouldn't waste time sitting there in a jail, log off and come back tomorrow. Only a fool would sit there are allow someone to dictate how you spend your physically present time.
I do think it is in super poor taste to not at least have a message pop up stating that a player is in jail, that there is no set timer, and this is a result of an undeniable, actionable offence.
The thread title here made me think of this movie...

I have also seen this but on if curiosity what can the GM really do regarding stalker like behavior.
End of the day the black list feature is your best line of defense. Sure it will not stop the initial response, and emote usage etc . . .
System is not perfect but blacklist is a powerful tool.
I have played many games and generally only extreme cases of harassment result in a permanent / IP / hardware bans.
Also with level boosts creating another account is quick and on the cheap side.
I really cannot think of many games I have played where people have been banned for stalker like behavior. Also if someone is willing to go that far with stalking that it results in a ban then sadly it probably will not stop them for long.
