I mean what may have been a good name idea a few years ago might not remain so a few years down. I can understand not wanting people to constantly change their forum display name, but they should at least let us do it once a year.

I gave my chocobo most of my forum name so...it has some relevance at least. But yeah, I agree. Maybe when they upgrade the forums 10 years from now we'll have more options.
Allowing names changes is not going to result in a sudden explosion of trolls. Trolls are going to troll with or without name changes. You can just use a certain troll who-shall-remain-nameless and their bunch of alt accounts as an example. Even with multiple bans, they kept trolling. I don't see the harm in allowing people to change forum names one a year or something.
Maybe a cash shop product?
We don't need Titanman impersonating other forum posters with constant name changes.
As someone who takes breaks from the forum, it's nice to be able to recognize names at a glance.
Y'all just mad you didn't get your user name right on the first try.
The forum name exists so others can identify posts as coming from a specific account. The meaning behind the name you pick might stop being relevant to you but the name itself remains relevant to others who use it to identify which posts are yours. If people keep changing their name, even if months apart, that connection gets lost.
Pick a neutral name in the first place and you don't have to worry about the meaning staying relevant to you.
I wouldn't object to a one time only forum name change for those who initially choose a name they come to regret but I would be against any form of regular name changes.
Yes and no. There are things that identify the account besides the name. All past posts would remain connected to the account, more than likely the name would change on all previous posts. If not, search could be setup to return posts under previous names when the new name is used.
Make it a 1800-day veteran reward.
I'm forever stuck with my FFXI name. :(
On free name change token a year , good for a year. Otherwise from Mogstation with a 30 day cool down period.
Not really, as that's just how the world works. Many restrictions that exist (including legal laws) wouldn't exist if there weren't people that would abuse their power/authority/right and produce unwanted results. And besides, this forum isn't a democracy. SE will do what they want with it.
Character name changes are a necessity in this sort of game. They're invaluable to role-players, especially if they pop a fantasia and want to adhere to established naming conventions for their character.
As for forum names, I'd love to change mine. I just threw a random name at the screen when trying out the game at the insistence of a friend. At the time, I wasn't sure if I'd even stick around for the long term since many other MMO's had failed to capture my interest.
To be honest, I'd love to change mine too. I'm all for it if there's a limit/price/something-who-cares in it, so it won't be abused.
If anything, Forums need a serious upgrade for a long while by now, including either removing or increasing the daily limit of messages (I know why it was added in the first place, but seriously, with how big the community became in these 7 years, 20 messages per day often just aren't enough). Its UI is pretty outdated as well, though it's not exactly bad even today, I saw far worse things. Mobile Version... nearly nonexistent tbh, easier to write new one from scratch than updating old one. That said, a possibility to change your name should be available as well, with some restrictions maybe, like being registered on forums for some considerable amount of time first and then with long cooldown.
