Sick and tired of aiming gear designs

Sorry, guys, this is an overdue rant that has been accumulating over years now. The last straw was today’s 5.4 new gear.

Can physical ranged DPS please stop getting maiming and tanking gear? I’m so sick and tired of getting armored gear that doesn’t suit the classes BRD/MCH/DNC. Like, please give us nice-looking gear for a change. I’m fed up with being disappointed with every normal raid gear BRD gets. We always get the short end of the stick. Physical ranged classes are supposed to be agile, yet we’re the ones stuck with armors. Like, seriously? And even when we get sets that look like striking/scouting (the tome gear, for example), they get the better colors and small detail differences (have you seen that hideous aiming head piece?).

I’m also sick of this stupid style that SE keep recycling. I don’t want unisex gear all the freaking time. I want something feminine for my female character from time to time. We rarely get skirts, sandals (dunno if we ever got ones), or anything flattering for females. I was so hoping to get better-looking gear when I learned DNC was gonna share the aiming gear, but alas, that class is now stuck with the same shit as BRD and MCH.

I always look forward to new gear they add. I love clothes and putting together nice outfits in real life, and this passion got transferred into the game. But with aiming, I find myself disappointed most of the time with the gear we get. And before someone says "Go play a class that has the gear you like," no. I shouldn't have to change the class I enjoy because of uninspired and lazy recycling of designs. And before someone else says "Then stop complaining about this since you choose to play your class," also no. I'm allowed to express my frustration with something I'm passionate about.

Please tell me I’m not the only one this frustrated with the aiming gear in this game.

I think a lot of the more recent gear has been pretty bad. I do like some of the glam available but would be nice to see some gear come out looking cool. There hasn't been a whole lot of gear in any one patch in particular that just floored me as far as I remember.

I main DNC and the gear I feel just does not fit the job at all. Its heavy looking and I want something pretty and feminine.

I love the look Rydia has from the earlier FF games I feel they have really stopped trying with gear and hairstyles too :(

Honestly gear design is trash tier since mid-SB i would say. I'm not sure what is the problem, i don't think that gear design team lacks skill, maybe they lack imagination. Either way it's a problem that gets ignored for some time now.

As a MCH main I don't see the problem. Every class gets hand me down recolors from other classes not just rdps, and honestly when 70% of the community is going to glamour 2b's pants and a bikini top over everything I don't blame them for not putting in more effort sometimes.

Probably because the armors that come out actually do not look good. Everything has turned into a damn trench coat look. People will resort to things like this because that's about all they have left to use for a glamour, as the base armor just isn't appealing anymore. They'd rather look at butt cheeks because it's the only thing left worth looking at. This complaint has been an issue for some time now, and it's not just aiming gear - it's the entire armor set for the jobs.

Whoever is creating the armor sets have lost their ability to be creative and keep repeating the same look, or had an episode of some type to make them just look bad.

I don't mind the recolors, but my issues are a) the shitty colors aiming gets most of the time, and b) aiming getting the maiming/fending instead of striking/scouting or casting/healing.

Sorry but why is this an excuse to be lazy (even if you're saying this as a joke)? While I do know a lot of people use the pieces you mentioned, they're hardly 70% of the playerbase (even if you were exaggerating there). But like the post above me said, the gear is starting to look so same-y and uninspired/boring with them reusing the same styles over and over and over again.

If they made gear that actually looked good more people would use these pieces as glamour, rather than resorting to butt armor.

What about Ninja who only gets robes or Red Mage who gets robes which do not fit the class at all :S

As a DPS, I only play BRD. And when it comes to glamour, I only invest in my BRD (don't really have inventory space for other classes). I won't claim to know what's going on with the other classes, but I'm sure they also have their issues. I just know healers are sick of robes and my own frustration with aiming gear since I experience it firsthand. That's about it. This is why I made a thread about aiming only ^^;

I like long coats, so it doesn't bother me much for the most part, but it does make it hard to find a decent dancer glam.

I tend to prefer armored looks in general, even for Ranged, so I don't mind that. what I do mind is that they are more strict with their fidelity when it comes to Disciplines of War, like where are their Armored looks?

Plus you have to noticed that everything being the same talbards and robes tends to be a little boring after awhile, much like spellslingers and their robes and Tanks with their armor.

I don't mind long coats, but when 90% of aiming gear is coats, it kinda gets boring ^^; I crave more variety. We always get coats, pants (almost no skirts at all), hats (still better than the occasional hoods they curse us with every now and then, I admit), and boots. Same style over and over. Sometimes I just want a short chest piece that doesn't cover the waist details of the legs piece (T_T).

A revamp for glamour system would solve this, but "legacy code" is still here so...

I dunno... My fav MCH glams came from this expac.

Don't get me wrong. There are some nice-looking gear sets/pieces in this expansion. It's when aiming shares the fending/maiming gear that I get irritated because I usually find those sets the ugliest (my personal taste) and they're the sets that don't suit the physical ranged classes at all. Can you imagine a clanking dancer thanks to those armors we keep getting stuck with? Many sets look nothing like what aiming gear should be. If we're gonna share gear, just please let us share the other ones instead. I'd have killed to get the new Eden striking/scouting (or at the very least the casting/healing) chest piece for my BRD. Instead, we got yet another armor-y set (and that abomination of a tomestone hood) -.- This patch's aiming gear was a huge disappointment to me. Both our Eden and tomestone gear sets were the worst compared to the other classes. I also don't get why healing/casting are the only classes with the privilege of getting feminine pieces (when there are differences between male and female versions). An example would be the leg pieces from the new Eden or the Bunker.

I'm rather fond of the aiming set from the GARO collaboration.

I agree! To add to your point, I so wish that aiming pieces had better hand/ arm gear. If i'm shooting a bow, I want an arm guard top protect my arm from the string. So many hand get pieces are just plain black gloves that end at the wrist. Like, why? Isn't the point of new gear, besides stats, that it actually looks new and different and opens up more glam options?

I agree, they need more diversity in designs. Here's the problem, you have BRD with one aesthetic, MCH with another, and DNC with another. You don't get your obviously BRD aesthetic, without annoying MCH/DNC. We never get a DNC aesthetic - and if we did, it would annoy BRD/MCH. Those three roles using the same gear, is a pretty big limiting factor.

I kinda enjoy the Magitek-punk look? But I kinda see what you mean.

So? Not every piece of gear is meant to fit every job in the role. Far better for there to be a set that fits one job, another for a 2nd and another for a third. Alternate between aesthetics (and this applies to the rest of the sets as well, Whether it be Tanks alternating between Plate Mail, Barbarian pelts, and suits, or Casters getting cultist black robes and swanky red suits)

If people wanted every gear to always fit their jobs, then they either play PLD/DRK/DRG/NIN/BLM/WHM or just want job-locked gear to be a lot more common than it is.

Tbh I quite like most ShB aiming gear design wise [Warg, Edengrace, Deepshadow, Crystarium, to name a few] but I must agree they don't look like something literal performers would use, even in battle, which is why I always end up glamouring over them anyways.

Have you looked at the crafted gear? Definitely a dancer vibe on that, and it shares with the striking and scouting sets.

While I agree that there doesn't seem to be enough lighter gear being added, and the increasing tendency to group aiming gear with tank/DRG designs is odd, I feel like if people genuinely think there's "nothing" available for dancers they are not looking far enough through the range of past designs and glamours available to us. There are quite a number of older gearsets with designs well-suited to dancer gear.

As for newer gear, of the three Lv80 crafted gearsets, the Facet and Exarchic designs seem particularly suited to dancer and the Neo-Ishgardian design also works well.

I would also like to particularly point out the Lv60 Torrent Sleeves of Aiming that can be used to add flared sleeves to almost any outfit.

I looked through aiming-equippable body pieces and made a list, erring on the side of including "fancy shirt" pieces that might be used more for male outfits.

If they came out with gear with a stronger aesthetic that players actually want, they wouldn't have to fall back to those choices. And the cash shop wouldn't be as successful if they didn't know what players want. Hopefully I don't have to spell out what I am implying here.

I'd actually love to have DNC-looking gear for my BRD. I love feminine and pretty clothes. I wouldn't be annoyed by this at all. MCH isn't really my style, but it can't be as bad as tanking and maiming gear and I'm sure it'll still give us nice pieces to work with.

DNC is a problem because it’s so thematically different from what a MCH/BRD would wear. It should really have got its own tier like DRG and NIN have.

Don’t really have too much complaints for MCH though, the Nier stuff was lovely.

This is not a solution, but as a healer, I'd rather get the almost always better looking aiming gear than an umpteenth boring robed healer set. So sick of this. This tier is no exception, another robe/long coat, with frills now. :(

One of the big reasons why I switched my main from BLM to DNC is because I was sick of all the robes, robes, robes, robes. But of course the time I switch is the time the designers start dishing out aiming gear that's just as underwhelming as well. Go figure.

No offense to the artists, but this is why I wish the devs would remove the role restrictions on glamour and/or try to shy away from the "trenchcoat/skirt" aesthetic that I've been seeing on so many tops, and the unnecessary belts/bags/trinkets attached to them too.

Also as an aside, I wish they weren't afraid of letting guys show their skin too sometimes. Getting kind of bored with the plain trousers. And the sleeves on the new Eden caster top were a huge disappointment too, ngl.

You know it’s been so long that I just think of Bard as an archer now to be honest. You’re right though, they could easily share the same clothes and MCH could get more futuristic stuff.

As it stands 80 percent of gear gives the impression of your standard fantasy medieval archer... which none of the jobs actually are.

Yeah, when you guys are continuously getting ugly armored gear, nobody is happy (shouldn't say that, somebody always loves everything SE releases). Dancer aesthetic would probably be refreshing. Never thought of it that way. Bard is a bard afterall, so a performer's aesthetic would work on both!
