Hi all! I just got my MacBook Pro 13'' with Apple Silicon (M1 chip) and 16GB RAM.
I downloaded the MAC version of FF14 directly from Square Enix (I didn't do steam originally) and it worked flawlessly.
I obviously still need to do more testing than simply running around and attacking a few mobs. I'll update this thread if I find any issues or crashes.
This includes the warning from SE to not upgrade to Big Sur. I didn't have a choice here with Apple Silicon but I'm glad to report it seems to be working. I noticed people struggling with the steam version so I don't know what is different about that version but downloaded directly from SE shows it works fine so far.

I'd be curious to know what sort of FPS you're getting in various environments and window/fullscreen resolutions as well as what graphics settings you're going with in XIV itself.
I'd also love to see the activity monitor graphs for processor load while playing, considering how many layers the game has to play through (32bit win directx9 client -> TransGaming/Wine wrapper -> Rosetta 2) to run on M1.
And of course, we all need to know if the bottom of the M1 MBP will sear the flesh off your legs if you play XIV with it on your lap, or if the M1 really does run as cold as reviewers have been saying. -

Sounds like Apple is trying again to pull gamers into their world of planned obsolescence and forced product replacement with their computers. Gamers are one of the largest electronic consumer markets they haven't been able to really make a splash into. The main hinderances being Mac OS which results in either having to partition a windows OS part of the storage drive or running a virtual machine within Mac OS to run windows in order to play most titles at launch coupled with most PC gamers being smart enough tech wise to see through the gimmicks they use to sell to other markets while having the knowledge needed to know they can match the actual performance playing game software on a PC for less money initially and can simply upgrade specific components as they want to or need to in the future rather than toss the whole thing out and buy a whole new system.

So it's been a few days. Generally got 30fps and never had any heat issues or instability.... until today (Nov 27 2020). No idea what changed but now it won't even start the application. I go to console (Mac app) and check the logs and find multiple lines of the following:

I don't pretend to know what that means but it doesn't even open the launcher anymore. Not sure if I messed up the rosetta 2 emulation settings for it when installing other things or if square ran an update and the latest version of the launcher doesn't work with it... either way I'll keep looking around for a solution but I'll be using my windows desktop for FF14 until this is resolved. -

I pulled a typical Mac user and assumed the lack of rebooting my Mac since I installed the game would have nothing to do with these issues. If I were on Windows it'd have been my first instinct...
So I uninstalled it from the Mac and then the issue kept coming back up while I was trying to re-install. I also noticed that a couple other apps started acting unstable so it clicked and I rebooted the Mac.
I'm successfully at the download portion of the re-install. I'll post again if I can get back in game. -

Another update:
As of today (Dec 24 2020) the latest updates haven't broken any compatibility with the M1 chip. Still playing the game just fine. :D I play with my wife who is running an intel windows system and we have the same experience in terms of dungeons, events, quests, etc. I haven't found any bugs other than what I mentioned previously, and I haven't had that issue since I last posted about it. -

So let me get this straight – you are running the existing intel macOS FFXIV client (which uses the crossover middleware to run the Windows client) and it runs just fine using the Rosetta2 translation on an M1 Mac?
That's great news for anyone who has an M1 Mac.
Personally I've found the macOS FFXIV client (which is basically the Windows client running on WINE/crossover) to be about 50% of the FPS of the Windows client running in Boot Camp on the same hardware (MacBook Pro with discrete GPU) with the same graphics settings, but it's definitely playable at lower settings and I like not having to reboot into Windows. -

Having now installed it on mine, it works rather well. I am surprised at the acceptable FPS from what is effectively an integrated graphics chip.
It won't be my main driver, but now I know I can quite successfully play the game away from my desktop quite reasonably.
Still amazes me just how long the batteries last for. -

I wanted to try the game on my base MacBook M1 Air today (the 7-core GPU with 8Gb of RAM). I needed to tweak some little things in the settings to get it to run OK but SE really should work on the compatibility with M1 chip and MacOS in general.
I play on 1680x1050 fps caped at 30 because the MacBook Air does not have any fans so it can get really hot (almost 100 Celsius !!) when I uncap. At 30 FPS I get about 87 Celsius at most. The heat it generates does not bother me when I put the MacBook on my lap. My settings are on middle since there is almost no difference between standard and middle.
Depending on the zones in Eorzea, I usually keep my 30 FPS when doing beast tribes. When I try uncap, I get between 35 and 60. It really jumps for some reason. That is also why I just cap at 30 FPS so it stay stable. Now I did tried Eden 11 Normal and mostly got 22 FPS because of all the animation of the boss. I turned down other players animation except for mine but it did not help.
Lowering the resolution to 900p and standard setting did not help.
Knowing playing through MacOS client cost us about half the FPS we should have is disappointing. From that, I can say the game is ''playable at best'' but Square Enix really should give us Mac user an updated client and a good compatibility with M1 chip. I mean, they are literally selling a broken client right now and people with Intel Mac prefer to just use bootcamp and play on windows since the Mac version is crap. Unfortunately M1 user cannot bootcamp. If Blizzard updated WoW to run on M1 on Shadowland release, Square should at least give us a proper client on Endwalker release.
