Anyone else think that housing should stay limited?

Having limited housing means that people will actually login and interact with their house making the neighborhood a lot more active.

It's also kinda like a status symbol you know? I feel a lot better and special than people without house even though it's just a small.

Plus think about all the effort it takes to buy out an entire ward especially in populated servers like in Gilgamesh? Wouldn't you feel bad for that person if everyone can buy their own ward without any effort making those people feel less special?

Asmongold would disapprove. What if he tried FF14 on stream and he couldn't get a house and talked sh*t about FF14?

you're the 1st person I ever saw thinking of housing as that. A house full of very rare or extremely expensive items can be, but the housing itself?

It should be available for all, mainly because of the unhealthy playstyle that it promotes when new houses become available.

I get that some people's neighborhoods are busy but many are absolutely dead. Many. In alternative words Wildstar, a completely instanced system, had a FAR more active housing environment. While a ward system may lightly encourage interactivity it is certainly not the only option in order to have activity.

If you want activity you do not under any scenario need wards.

As for status symbol I find that is best used for things that don't apply a potentially core experience, like an achievement is meaningful to some people but if you missed out on one you'd not be missing any actual game play features. Miss out on housing actually removes gameplay opportunity from you. In such a vision I see housing should have been like FFXI and started small / free and progressed into larger concepts (keeping the investments, but making the content more gradual and bite sized in approach). At least for a theme park game I think scarcity should be like that, in a sandbox scarcity can be more literal as you'd attract that type of audience more and better design such scarce concepts to the environment presented.

I think people who buy out entire wards, if the system was able to support every single player, is fine.. but of course it can't so that's sort of unfortunate sometimes.

Ultimately beyond the not everyone can have a house of X size / location issues most people have I also just think wards is a bad system / idea because it prevents a lot of creative potential. We could have had amazing Amarout designed houses if it was more Wildstar like, amazing Azim Steppe houses, underwater palaces, sky bases, chocobo ranches, whatever, but instead we're locked into 4 (likely soon 5) themes and heavily restricted on decoration options and tools (can't scale / float whatever you want).

Overall I think the system is a mistake. Doesn't meet demand, exceptionally inconsistency in providing actual player interaction with many reporting dead ghost wards (and systems in an instanced style could be used to encourage social interaction just as much as in a ward scenario), requires compromise on the player's part (unlikely to get the house size, house location, and house theme that you want- so you need to be prepared to compromise, compromising like that in a theme park mmo sounds like a silly proposition), heavily restricts features that can be introduced (since not all players can use housing, can't have cool features built around it without serious repercussions), heavily restricts player and dev artistic creativity... just.. I would never ever recommend this housing system in any situation given any core desires. "I want heavy player interaction" - I would still not recommend the ward system. Rather would suggest for a game where scarcity and heavy interaction is important that you design a sandbox mmo.

Theme park mmos shouldn't use FFXIV's ward system, ever, imo. Sandbox mmos have better systems than the wards. Originally before the system was out I had thought they might do a sort of Kingdom Hearts concept + instances where you had your own area but in the stars you could spot other 'worlds' and your friends and FC would be prioritized stars, with naturally the ability to hide the constellation until pulled up if you didn't want to see it (like a Skyrim skill tree almost). Such that players could easily travel to their friends house or they might see a star color change / glow brightly to let them know of a party or that they're home.

If one must use the ward system for a theme park at least do it like Lord of the Rings Online did where the wards automatically grow. But I'm not sold that the benefit is actually that great by putting everyone together. Since there is evidence that its about the community and supporting systems (like having a search-able houses, etc, icons to represent your house concept, these things don't need wards) that makes a housing system active rather than just if it's a ward vs instance (Wildstar for example having had a far more active community but being far more instanced than FFXIV).

Honestly I feel like a large amount of the demand for houses is simply because they are limited and that if they were made an unlimited resource there would actually be less people using them.

Yep. The demand is a huge element of the appeal.

Personally, I don't mind "aspirational" features in MMOs. I like seeing things that are inaccessible to me. It makes the world a little more grand.

There will be no neighborhoods with instanced housing. And they are already dead anyway. I was able to grab a house last patch and yesterday was the very first time I saw one of my neighbors. He was ERPing in his garden and I have seen everything from my treehouse.

To a degree.... yes.

With a bit of a rework of the system, expansion of apartments, separate garden feature, etc. They could increase the prices of houses, so that they were the premium option (while larger apartments would be the middle ground) and then their supply would more closely match their demand.

I thinking housing should be made available to all, but that the wards should stay. More wards and better apartments is my solution.

My masochistic tendencies are moderate, but even I can only get so much satisfaction from failing to snatch the house of my dreams. Again and again.

I usually see at least a couple people around my house in game. Though I think the cause of it is that one of the mansions was bought by an FC and a number of the surrounding housing plots purchased by members of that FC coupled with the fact my home is right next to a market board.

Whether it should or not is irrelevant. They're not likely to change the way housing is, ever. They'll just keep adding more.

I don't really care either way. I got a medium house in one of the ward expansions a while back and I'm happy enough with it. It's in a fairly secluded location so I would hardly notice if all housing was made instanced.

Yes, it should stay limited. No instanced housing and what not, that's not the original intent behind housing. Housing wards should have that neighborhood feel to them.

No, I do not believe it should be limited or used as a virtual "status symbol" in a videogame, I'm sure it's something you could put on a job resume. Having a house doesn't mean anything, just a way to fulfill a hobby and deal with the already headache inducing, poorly designed decorating system in comparison to games like The Sims or the amazing housing system in Wildstar- which was instanced- highly accessible and easily customizable- what helped it stay active before the game shut down, was that players could visit randomly and tour your self made plot. Trust me, no-one is impressed with the fact that people own virtual houses, and if they are - then clearly this person is sheltered and takes the game too seriously, or they're lying to fluff an ego. Likely, they're more impressed with the unique designs that players rarely come up with.

IMO the housing system needs to be updated or at least added onto what already exists to accommodate the larger player base, as it was designed for a smaller base years ago before the game took off so housing space wasn't really an issue then.
Also, full neighborhoods are already dead. People have RL and stop playing- but allow their sub to run so that they get to keep their houses. So, to say that limited houses = more activity is not true considering you would need a very active set of people to purchase the housing and want to be willing to interact with other players and never let RL get in the way.
I've ever seen other players during a plot war where they all scramble to click the fastest- really community driven content and interaction lol. I rarely see anyone in the neighborhoods or apartment areas, and if there are then they're AFK. It's a dated system that needs a revamp. I'm not saying change what we have now- it should stay for those who like it- but add onto it with instanced plots/housing. I have an apartment and share a housing plot, but I would really jump at the opportunity to have an instanced housing plot. I fantasize once in awhile that the instance could be placed anywhere around a major city but outside of the housing area- so that you appear to be a fresh build in a "safe zone" and with the backdrop of a forested area within the black shroud, or on the plains of thanalan, or the overgrown terrain of la noscea.
Feeling special or trying to get validation through a game by owning X item shows a lack of validation in RL- I'm not a doctor and can only suggest do things that are more fulfilling in life rather than trying to get it out of a game that has strict limitations.

I love a limited housing system. I’d just rather it be limited by gil rather than nolife-ing a placard.

I would love "large" setting on apartments. 400 item limit too with a veranda/balcony overlooking the neighborhood.

The exclusionary FFXIV housing system is so bad (I own medium guild and personal homes), I wish there was at least an instanced alternatives for those who aren't privileged to own purchase bots. It's not so bad on Spriggan, but I was on Zalera before and finding a house there is basically impossible.

Ignoring the troll status of the thread for a sec, I did want to point out that instanced housing doesn't necessarily mean that you can't have neighbors. Wildstar had a solo-housing option as well as a community option where you could have a gigantic island with 4 of your friends. Each person would still get their own normal-sized plot to do with as they pleased, but you could just run right over and visit their plot as well. I would opt for an island with friends in a heartbeat if given the choice.

There is a way to sell bound-furnishings, it just takes a bit of trust on both the buyer and seller's part. I think the best way is to be given access to a FC chest, so that way both parties don't need to be concerned about having other furnishings stolen. Could always add them as a tenant, or vice versa, but seems a bit riskier to me (unless your house is already emptied out..).

I had pretty decent success with this when I was moving servers. I had typed up a list of items in Google docs, did a couple of shouts in town, offered a nice discount and voila! Didn't take too long. But again, definitely takes some trust and your mileage will vary on finding decent people to do the trade. X:
