Hard to say. We are at the stage where we have more than FFXI almost, which had 22 (after this we should have 19 presuming they add two, not counting Blue Mage). Is 20, four per role, a reasonable stopping point? Kind of? We definitely are running out of major jobs not yet in. But we could easily double the roster to eight per role and still have jobs you could add, so a lack of inspiration is probably not what the issue will be. Balancing though definitely has to take up some time. I'm kind of hoping for a (relatively) even five per role, so 25 total (not counting Limited).
Two at the most.
With how tanks and healers are being handled (DPS with, MNK, MCH, and possibly others) I doubt they're really thinking about adding more jobs, which in-turn means more balancing / rework issues we are currently facing now.
Under Yoship's direction I'd say we'll keep getting more new jobs as long as we keep getting new expansions. FFXIV is able to get away with this because of the DOW melee/ranged/tank and DOM magic/healer gearset so the only work they have to do is designing the weapons; now, this will require an extra graphic artist or two but if the game keeps bringing in a lot of money it looks possible. The way Yoship talks about jobs it's as if he has a lot more ideas he wants to explore, so I get the impression he won't stop.
I've posted a lot of different places on jobs, but honestly, I fully expect an expansion(s) that do not add any jobs at all.
As we saw this last patch, a chunk of time was spent on TLC. As MMOs get older, more and more time/budget becomes needed to deal with TLC/bloat/balance yet their income doesn't necessarily increase.
They're already done with adding new races, so decreasing the number of jobs (if not outright stopping) is a possibility. That said, continuing to add jobs (maybe even at the same rate) is also a possibility as there will always be players who would want to try the new jobs. It's one thing that can be counted upon to excite some in the player base. Even BLU has its fans.
I think three. One for healer, one for ranged DPS and one for caster. If not counting Blue Mage, that will make equal 4 for each role (the other two being tank and melee DPS).
My prediction is that, if the game stays as successful for the next ten years (which I doubt), they could be aiming at :
6.0 1 healer + 1 caster
7.0 1 ranged + 1 melee
8.0 1 tank + 1 caster
9.0 1 healer + 1 ranged
And there you have it, 5 jobs for each "role".
I'm reasonably certain we'll get 2 more jobs in 6.0. It's totally just fan theory at this point, but SE was being pretty cheeky about teasing Apothecary/Chemist as a combat healer in the 5.3 story so I'd place bets on that being one of them. Some people are pointing to the new dungeon's 2nd and 3rd bosses as being possible teasers too since they'rebut I think this theory is much flimsier. Of the two, I could see Necromancer being a new caster job since that one is actually different from anything we have now. I'm comfortable getting tentatively getting behind this theory since it's a fun one. The berserker boss, however, is clearly just a warrior so that's not a tease for a new class at all. I also think we'll either get a new limited job in 6.0 or we'll just get another BLU system.subverted warriors of light from other shards
As for past 6.0, I don't see any reason for them stopping releasing new jobs aside from them just feeling like they're done. New jobs will probably only stop coming when they eventually transition from releasing full expansion cycles to doing all expansion via a purely patch based development cycle like they do with XI now. I also don't see them ever going down to a single new job per expansion. All of this leads to the obvious related question: when are they going to stop releasing expansions? They've been pretty clear over the years that 6.0 will be the finale of the whole ARR saga where we actually visit the empire, so 6.0 looks like a good candidate for being the final full expansion and was probably their long term "where do we see ourselves in 10 years" plan. That said, FFXIV shows no signs of slowing down so I imagine they'll keep going past that somehow. They have several other shards we could potentially visit and I'm sure there are continents on the Source aside from the ones we already can visit so there's lots of opportunity to. Since our world is vaguely based on the Ivalice geographical world from FFXII there's ample opportunity for something like the Rozarrian Empire on the Ordalian contintent to the west, for example. Given that each expansion takes roughly 2 years to release, I imagine that we're good for 2 or 3 more before SE releases a new MMO and FFXIV gets converted to a maintenance upgrade schedule.
I'd prefer we get some alternative playstyles for current classes. Yes we have a lot but there is only one way to play them. Every Samurai is exactly the same etc...
My money would be that we get atleast 3 more classes
1-2 more per expansion up til a certain point (7.0/8.0). I think we'll hit a point where certain jobs are close to being reskins of others though that mine Final Fantasy nostalgia. Not completely 1:1, but similar enough that they can be balanced in tandem. For example, unless they make them limited jobs, I think a future Beastmaster or Puppetmaster would play similar to 5.0 Smn. Off-gcd and instant cast pet actions (in addition to an auto), gcd weapon actions for the caster, an overdrive/sic type action similar to trance, actual skins for the pet etc.
Since they've added trusts like FFXI, reaching the end of the MSQ they planned so far (6.0), reaching the age that FFXIV took reigns from FFXI (not counting 1.0 time), have had comments about dropping another dalamud, could benefit from some core coding changes (for like glamour log, etc) and refreshing the gameplay loop / treadmill granting a change of pace (I assume a tighter more visceral combat system with better response and flow but maybe not quite action rpg but perhaps towards their recent sRPG with still many abilities). So I'm wondering if a new mmo isn't on the winds 1-3 years from now (could be cataclysm level expansion but the handling of the story would be interesting then.. I make a guess at maybe an alternate timeline where the shards combine and that makes the new mmo setting). In which case I'll guess 3-4 normal jobs and 2 more limited jobs over the next two expansions, 5.5 for the limited job and 6.0 with two jobs and the big story finale to send off FFXIV with closing chapters. And at least another one after it's already been sent off like FFXI (with the patches and such), I would guess perhaps to another planet (since we've got the dragons and Omega and stuff- so a lot of TLC and long term content and a job or two). Expansions after that based on demand.
Personally really would like to see SE create a fully fleshed out transformation based job, I feel the visual and lore vibe could be really awesome. Especially if they are inspired by their sRPGs they've made. (Fully meaning not simply a limited/mini game side content- not saying that can't be fun but I want to see the whole enchilada not the happy meal size lol)
I expect two more for 6.0. After that I reckon they'll probably only add one proper job per expansion, citing the work it takes to update all the old ones as the reason.
Probably a few more limited jobs too, I live in hope they'll revamp that whole system into something more worthwhile.
2 new jobs for next expansion, then 1 job per expansion until the game is shut down.
Until told otherwise, it's 2 per expansion.
I'd personally like to see eastern theme'd jobs as the next ones. I've proposed the idea of a healer centered around aura effects and thematically it could be centered around the chinese zodiac animals.
Then for casters there's a few things. My favorite would be one revolving around trickster spirits and other mischievous yokai from eastern folklore.
It depends really on how long the game goes, but I suspect that 6.0, if it gives us two jobs, will be the final expansion to do so before they cut back to 1 per expansion. And then perhaps eventually 1 every other expansion or just none at all.
Uhm what? No where has it been stated that 6.0 was the last of the msq they had planned. They said they were wrapping up the story of Hydaelyn and Zodiark, and the ascians specifically, but they have gone on to assure us in various interviews that they still have more stories to tell. There’s lore threads all over that have nothing to do with Hydaelyn and Zodiark.
I think it's not likely they'll stop adding jobs. Although people have made some reasonable arguments for reaching a stopping point once we hit a certain number per role/sub-role or other criteria... the thing is, new jobs are something people get very excited for at expac time. And everyone hopes their favorite one will be added next, and so on.
If SE were to stop, I think it's safe to say it would significantly slow the hype and sales of new expansions. When FF14 goes into maintenance mode I could see that happening, but as long as it's SE's breadwinner? I don't think so.
They might possibly need to hire/transfer more than 4 people to work on job balance & design eventually, and maybe they'll need to change less about existing jobs when a new expac comes, but I can't see SE stopping before FF14 begins declining for other reasons.
For this same reason, I think one of the new jobs (and perhaps the only new job if the rate slows) will always be DPS. There will never be a "new tank, new healer, no new DPS" expansion. They'd disappoint too many people if they did that.
Honestly, I'm both happy with the current roster, but I'm also excited by the idea of new jobs. Granted, there really aren't any "missing" that really stand out to me (other than "Chemist", which I only noticed because someone suggested it on the main page). But I honestly love having those new "themes" to look forward to, and Job quests are always a ton of fun (truth be told, the lack of meaningful Job quests is the ONE THING about Shadowbringers that was kind of a letdown).
The only things that come to my mind for potential character-types not already present might be a dual-wielding Barbarian/Berzerker type of Job (dual axes?), maybe a Pet-class that uses animals instead of Summoner pets, part of me almost wonders if there would be enough precedent to split the Bard and the Archer into two distinct Jobs, with Bards uses Harps and maybe leaning more support, with Archers *JUST* dealing damage?
Beyond that, I honestly quite like the idea of some type of "Gambler" type of Job. Maybe it would have to be another "Limited Job", or maybe something heavily RNG-based could still be balanced somehow, but even just visually, I kind of dig the idea of a Job that's throwing around cards, dice, just all kinds of big Casino/Gold Saucer visuals for their moves!
I belive Yoshida said once that the idea is to always add new Jobs with every expansion
Might have misunderstood me, but they have said they had the MSQ, the one as we know it, planned up to 6.0 and that 'that' story will be finishing around 6.0. All the that Zodiark jazz, all wrapped up. This doesn't mean there is no more stories to tell, not end of 'all MSQ' just end of the one we're on. It means the story line we've been riding all along will be done soon. That's all. Which they have said, story planned up to 6.0. But that was also said a while ago. Could be planned up to 12.0 by now, just have not said that to us yet.
If anything it seems you took end of msq as meaning the permanent end, which I didn't intend clearly by the fact I suggested there will be another expansion, and I meant it simply the chain we've been on all along- everything else you said I already said (that there can and will be more).
There are clearly innumerable amount of stories they 'could tell'. I even gave an example with alternate worlds, because we know those exist. If anything what I said was 6.0 is leading us to the end of the MSQ, as we know it, a new msq can be made, and then also said there will be another expansion after 6.0. Just like FFXI had one (two technically, one was near release of 2.0 and another in 2015). I would gamble on another expansion after 6.0. How many, I wouldn't though. lol.
I was just pointing out that a number of circumstances that might add a slight grain of weight to the scale that says they might be thinking of a new mmo (or large 1.0 - > 2.0 / dalamud level change at least) within a few years. Not saying it's for sure, wouldn't gamble on it, but just feel there are signs in the wind that say it's entirely possible. Time frames, game mechanics that add support to a smaller population, the actual main MSQ ending soon, number of jobs, bloat that can be best cleaned up with a new slate, etc, etc, etc.
Also one must pay attention to his words, as he actually means what he says lol. Things said years and years ago will come up again later. Like he talked about his order of sky, sea, moon long ago, or already well described how blue mage would be during the 2.0 beta. The dude plans and drops hints here and there over years of time, he be a real planner.
I think each new expansion will get 2 new jobs. 6.0, we're getting a healer and ranged or caster DPS next.
Question is, if not new jobs what would subscribers and potential new subscribers be excited about? The msq alone won't do it.
For me it would be them adding new weapon types and animation options to existing jobs or some kind of path system. Like Warrior can diverge into Berserker (with a hammer weapon); where the balance (potency/damage/rotation) is the 100% the same as Warrior but the animations and battle effects are different in some of the skills. But for the love of Hydaelyn they must stop feeling tied to making level 1 to level 80 weapon models; just use the same weapon model within 10 levels or even 20 levels.
1 more healer 1 more dps perhaps. I'm thinking the next expansion might be the last. At least as far as the Hydaelyn/Zodiark story goes. If they go beyond that I don't know.
We need to fill a few more niches first. We definitely need new healer. Then i would say we miss Spellsword, Gunner (current MCH is not a Gunner), and 4th caster.
New jobs are one of the highlights of every expansion, it's easy generated hype and excitement. They'll add two jobs/expansion as long as FFXIV is going strong. No more new expansions will mean no more jobs. The problem they're gonna face down the road is there will come a time when adding enough jobs some of them will feel quite similar and balancing will become harder.
We'll get two jobs with 6.0 for sure, and probably two jobs with 7.0 if 6.0 manages to be critically acclaimed and adored by fans as Shadowbringers was. By that time it's at least 2023 though, and at that point the question will be if they will do further expansions at all, revamp/rejuvenate the game (like a 1.0 to 2.0 shift) or just focus on the next Big MMO project.
