Remember the FFXI mentor system?

I'd like something like that implemented. I like helping newbies and explaining them the ropes. A lot of them seem to find FFXIV to be pretty complex and frustating.

It'd be cool (but not necessary) if they could link some achievements to it too.
Like the helped player could review the mentor by the end or something like that with a simple thumbs up/down menu.

I think that'd be neat.

That might be a nice addition for 2.0

I miss my mentor flag... I would turn it on at Fafnir camp to show my opponents that I was serious busines

Most people on FFXI just used the mentor icon to make themselves stand out...

Thus I mostly see that happening again if it was in this game.

a reputation system would be kind of cool.

maybe if you had good feedback you could get a special icon. different tiers and such. or titles!

I would love to see this make a comeback!

I would like this to make a return too. On my first day playing FFXI a mentor helped me out with learning the basics of how to fight when I hadn't a clue how to. Although the tutorials in this game will hopefully be teaching new players the basics, it is always nice to know there are others around that you can see that you can ask questions to make something clearer or even just to answer how to get from one place to another. ^_^

Most mentors wasnt that useful when i was still playing. It was just kinda there and nobody gave a single fk.

remember how 90% of people who kept the mentor flag up just did it to feel important and actually didn't have any idea what was going on half the time?

...could be easily abused by people telling their friends to give them good feedback or whatnot. It would need a more in depth system to determine authenticity and that is more work than it should be.. lol

Would be easier just to leave it out.

as for the mentor flag, i would like this in game as i like sharing what knowledge i have of the game to people who are seeking it +1 for the OP

On FFXI the first time I got helped by was from a Mentor, he helped me learn how to play the game and also gave me 10k with some gear. It was a really fun experience, the only problem with it though, nobody used it how it should have been used. So, if they put something in this game that is like it, but made it work, I would be down with that.

I already help people when they need it. If I need to have a special symbol by my name to feel important while doing it, so be it.

I remember not using it lol

I used to love that system. Always used to flip it on when I was bored.

I don't think there should be a feedback or achievement thing though. Helping for helps sake is enough :)

This. The mentor system really wasn't touched much after 2005-06. Aside from my joke on the 1st page of this thread, I used it in a serious manner quite a bit in the early years of the game.

In the elder days though, I would get bored and turn the mentor flag on and help people get to different cities. I would help with SJ quests, yada yada yada. I enjoyed it so much because helping these new people reminded me of the sheer "awe" and "wonder" that I had when I was new to the world of Vana'Diel. Also just gave you a good feeling tossing them 10k and buying them some Bone+1 gear for their level 21 jobs :)

THIS! I love newbies because they are so filled with awe! It'd reminded me to when I started.

I always have had my mentor up, but not once get asked for help from any newbie.

With the amount of new players I've found and stopped to spend an hour or two helping them out with various things and answering questions in the following days that they play, I wouldn't mind having the mentor system again ^^ I do it now without the system but if I had the flag up and a new player saw it they'd know they could message me and I wouldn't dismiss them.

The system is fairly self explanatory, it gives base training already so a mentor system wouldn't be that needed, and getting into a Linkshell more important. I would mentor on and off for 6 or so years on Xi when I was bored and got most of what I needed between LS events. But often new players got ignored and complained noone would help, I tested this out and 90% of the marked mentors never responded.
