Has nobody told Stephanivien his outfit is an injury waiting to happen?

Don't get me wrong, Stephanivien's a pretty capable guy, but those big, loose sleeves are just asking to get caught in machinery, and that wide-open collar is practically an invitation for hot sparks, metal shavings, and spent firearm cartridges to find their way inside his shirt. He's got goggles, gloves, and closed-toed shoes, so he's not a complete liability working in his beloved skysteel manufactory, but his shirt is the exact opposite of personal protective equipment. Ishgard clearly doesn't have any sort of Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or else all they would have had to do if they wanted to thwart the machinists guild was Report Stephanivien for dangerous workplace practices.

I wouldn't mind if he tripped and fell into one of his machines. I'm sure there would be a satisfying crunch and squish as the metal gears made quick work of him. Maybe Hilda and Joye can try and rescue him but get pulled into the machinery as well.

You're right. We should make sure everyone only wears skin tight clothing. It's only safe, after all.

You leave Hilda out of this. She's done nothing but struggle!

This is the same city where female dragoons wear armor that exposes their bellies for no apparent reason, despite A: being locked in a perpetual winter and B: fighting dragons all the time. They do not understand practical clothing in Ishgard.

That's just how it is in the Industrial Age. You should see just how they disregarded safety back then. The workers would wear hats that were just begging to get caught in one of the belts.

I remember reading how movie starlet Veronica Lake had to ditch her trademark hairstyle and start wearing it up, even do a bunch of photo shoots with a "safe" up-do style, to promote factory safety during WWII because so many women had machinery accidents with loose hair. Urban legend is that the change was at least partially responsible for her decline in box office popularity.

The other glaring issue with Miss Lake's hairstyle was that it covered one eye. Women's productivity across the nation reduced by half because of that. Unfortunately for her career, uncovering her second eye doubled the number of alcohol filled glasses she could spot.

That only increases his resistance because of all the damage it causes, just like how blacksmiths and armorers like to increase their heat resistance by wearing open chest clothing.

Fantasy art may sometimes depict a blacksmith as shirtless, a sleeveless tunic under the leather apron was more likely.

You encounter Brithael with a sleeveless tunic that is designed with a Fantasy flair.

And my favorite armor is the Coliseum gear set ... and my crafters glamour using the South Seas Talisman.

Shirtless is great, just don't want folks out there thinking that "body sweat" is the only protection an IRL blacksmith uses.

I did research into blacksmiths for a writing project long ago and they did indeed go shirtless, but for the express purpose of protecting against sparks. They indeed wear protection during the smelting process.
