What is the one issue that you would choose to have addressed FIRST, over all others, to make FFXIV a more enjoyable experience? Please only discuss ONE. I am aware there are countless flaws with this game, but we need a starting point.
For me, I want to see more direct control of my character.
There is just not enough responsiveness to my commands; if I move while casting I want my character to immediately stop casting. I want the entire thing to just abort, no misfire animation or any other further difficulty.
When I see a dodo or yarzon charging a TP attack, I want to move behind it and know for certain it won't hit me because I am visually and physically behind it. Instead, about 20% of the time I am a fraction of a second too slow and they hit me anyway. This is usually while I'm casting a spell, and then move to get out of there. The spell either resolves and casts, or my character stumbles about while failing it.
I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but the cast bar is basically useless. It never seems to accurately reflect the timing of my spellcast; most of the time for spells 2 seconds or less it flashes once and disappears halfway full. For 3 seconds or more, IF the bar displays at all, it also usually just vanishes around 50-70% full.
See how complex one issue is? So please, only discuss your one worst gripe about FFXIV for now.

Final Fantasy games have always been about the journey. FFXI did what FFXIV has not, and that is creating a journey or adventure or whatever you want to call it for players.
FFXIV's journey was more like... spend 50 levels in the same zone. Maybe go explore the other ones, then go do dungeons in the same spot for 3 months, get loot... repeat. -

in before "coming in 2.0". Responsiveness will come with new servers. IMO this is the biggest problem, you've hit the nail on the head, but it's already being addressed.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it's the miracle fix. But logic dictates that the new server structure, which is designed to address the issue of lag and unresponsiveness, will alleviate the problem at least to some extent. That's not to say that there couldn't be other problems introduced at the same time, most likely there will be. It's certainly risk vs reward here. I'm willing to hedge my bets though and take SEs side on this one.

There will always be some lag regardless of how responsive the server is.
Even if the server is the best in the world, the line between you and the server might not, nor can any of the nodes along the way guarantee speedy routing of your packets.
Then there is the off-chance that there is a strong gust of wind that just happen to damage your connection to the server somewhere else on the planet.
Put it simply, there is only so much SE or any gaming company can do.
I don't expect 2.0 to fix the legendary lag monster. It is legendary for a reason. -

Hm... In the grand picture of things it's pretty minor, but it's the one thing that continuously annoys me the most at this stage in the game. The inability to quickly switch between linkshells. We need a text command or a button on the UI for this or something.
It annoys me to no end having to navigate the menus just to respond someone typing in a linkshell you don't currently have equipped. Oh, and if you're crafting? Forget it, you have to completely stop what you're doing and stand up to switch the linkshell before you can continue. -

First the game has to have better graphical optimization.
Playing it on an ATI card is just sad day. My laptop has significantly better specs than my desktop, yet my FFXIV experience is worse due to the fact that my laptop uses a Radeon ATI card and my desktop uses an nVidia.
So first I'd like them to fix all the hardware problems it has, so that more people can play it in the first place. -

I'm the explorer type of player, and I just hate it soo much how FFXIV is restricting my every step.
Hills with the height of my ankle force me to walk around them because my character can't walk over them..?!
Interesting places in town are protected by invisible barriers.
EVERYTHING remotely interesting which can be seen in a distance can't be explored because there's a fence or some kind of water in front of it (lakes in the Black Shroud, mini castles in Coerthas, airship and dragon king in Mor Dhona, Blue Fog machinery, etc.).
I can't even walk into a tiny pond to play in my summer event swimsuit because ANOTHER invisible border stops me from going in deeper than my ankles. Yay-.-
All of this is bothering me more than anything else.
Although I'd also like the game to react faster to everything, especially buying, selling and trading. -
