Have we ever had confirmation this was happening?
I mean I'm sure it'll happen eventually, but is it in the foreseeable future or just an idea they're throwing around?
Hope so, but I don't think they've even confirmed marriages other than a "if people want it, we'll consider adding it" kind of response.
Considering they are going to reserve the ring finger for special rings, ya, I say it's confirmed
Either way I wouldn't mind a little BROMANCE in ffxiv :P
Honestly, I dont see the point of a marriage system in a modern MMO. They made sense back in the early days when people actually roleplayed, games had ONE server, and your reputation and social interactions actually mattered.
These days no one would do it unless there was some in-game tangible benefit, effect, or bonus, in which case it would become mandatory in competitive play and lose whatever the original intention of the system was. Yeah, some people would still use it just to enjoy it, but that number is extremely small compared to the development time and costs involved in implementing the system.
I would do it without any type of bonus, I wont be getting married in real life so why not a game for kicks and giggles!~
If the Valentine event was any indication... *hint hint*
Yes please, I want to marry a yummy catboy.
That would be an MMO designed sometime in the current "generation" of games instead of something, say, created in the mid 90's when MUDs were still popular and games like Nexus:TK and UO were pioneering a brave new world with a type of game that nobody had conceived before, and names like Richard Bartle and Richard Garriott were still prominent designers.
If players want to act like they are married, fine, but theres no point to adding any official in-game recognition of it.
FFXI marriages added enough drama to that game. The last thing I want to see is this game become a fighting ground over social issues.
Its a game people, lets keep the RL drama and hot-button issues out of it.
Marriage in any form: Do. not. want.
I hate to agree, but yeah MMO gamers these days don't know the beauty of what a real MMORPG was like. Even RP aside, marriage systems was generally utilized by couples who ended up as RL couples or RL couples who wanted to extend their marriage to the virtual world, which I can guarantee you'll have a group of people see this as "pathetic" in this day and age.
in b4 prop8.
I explained that in my original post. The player demographic is entirely different than it was 17 years ago. Back then, games had one, *maybe* two servers, and having 200 players online at once was a groundbreaking milestone. Content was not easy, and accomplishments were not handed out like candy, rerolling a new character was a huge issue you avoided unless it was absolutely necessary, most players never even hit the level cap in many of these games and that was totally ok. You were constantly surrounded by the same people, and as such your social interactions and reputation held considerably more weight than they do in modern MMOs. There was no deleting your character and recovering your progress in a weeks worth of dungeon runs, nor could you spend $15 to server transfer to one of 400 other servers. People also roleplayed and engaged each other outside of the base number crunch of the game.
As such, two characters getting married had important social connotations, kind of like how it does in real life. You were much more invested in your character, so what happened to it, and how people though of you was considerably more important. It was a different time, and it worked under the context, but that same level of intimate attachment with your character and the players around you just aren't the same today with how the genre has changed.
I hope not.
It would basically be, "Everyone gets a free wedding set" since you just lock tongues with any other member of your LS pretty much.

Imagine this but server wide.
~~~DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FAST YOU WERE SCROLLING?~~~Don't forget to check out the Tail Option Thread. Vote for a brighter future for all Roegadyns!
I look at it this way. Those same 200 players/server are still playing some MMO out there, like this one, and they're still trying their hardest to enjoy the game the same way they did back then. These kinds of players will role-play, invest time with friends in game doing whatever, and make the game something more than the designers intended.
For these gamers, they'll be doing weddings whether or not the Devs invest the time to design a marriage event. This has no effect on whether a marriage event would be made or not. What will in XIV's case is whether or not the majority of players want it. Not because XIV is a "Modern MMO".
You're absolutely right, those 200 players are still doing their own thing to this day.
The point is that those 200 players are maybe 1% of a modern MMOs playerbase. The developers see that those 200 people think this would be really cool, and the other 20,000 only care about it if it gives a stat bonus or something. You're right that if enough people want it, maybe it will happen, but the bottom line is that development costs time and money, and these days not enough people *do* care about that sort of game content for developers to be willing to put resources towards developing it.
Tons of people faking a relationship in front of the GM's so they can get pimping Tux's and Frilly dresses without being serious about the entire affair. FFXI weddings were big news and an even bigger deal. No one screwed with them and if you did you would likely find yourself ported to Jugner for your efforts by a friendly GM. The percentage of people who would legitimately use the event for its original purpose is outnumbered by those who could just pull a hood wink for a chance to get some rare ceremonial gear.
Let's be honest there are WAY more Straight players then Gay players. By a large margin. It would upset the traditional tone they set in FFXI for the benefit of a small minority of the player base.
Not that there is anything wrong with that lol
However you must admit that the likelihood for abuse is much higher in a virtual setting with clear gain then someone setting up that kind of capper IRL. Some things are just not ready for a video game setting yet.
Careful, you might ruin the sanctity of marriage in a videogame.
I dunno, but I really don't think anyone playing FFXIV is really upset that there's already NPCs of all orientations in game. Not to mention inter-species relationships. And the valentine event basically steered in the same direction, free love for everyone.
To be honest, to me it seems like the MMO players are far more likely to tolerate it in game than IRL, simply because they don't have to reaaally deal with it. Besides, not like everyone boycotted Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Skyrim or other single player games out there because of the inclusion of such relationships.
Meh, if they wanna add it, let them. . . . no difference to me. Prolly never going to utilize that option as I don't want to get just anyone to marry me :p
I seriously tried to apply for a wedding date with my then girlfriend at the time. They had a lottery system in place to reserve a day that was 4-5 months away, and you usually only had a small chance to reserve that spot. AND if you were the groom or bride, you couldn't reserve! You had to have a 3rd person do it for you. Needless to say, I never got one reserved.
Based on that, OF FUCKING COURSE FFXI placed importance on a silly event! Actually getting it was a triumph in itself! You really think with a system like that, players would dick around at the ceremony?
I think it'd be the only way to make a wedding important in a "Modern MMO". But I still see players on the forums complaining about, "SE, Y U NO MAKE WEDDING EASIER TO GET".
Serious, it was (is?) easier to plan and book a wedding IRL during peak season than it was/is in FFXI.
But along a different line of thought, I think adding an plan-your-own-event type area (instanced) where you can choose decorations, music, NPCs, food, etc. would be a good solution to the whole situation. Such a location could be used for everything from birthday celebrations, to LS gatherings, to marriage ceremonies (same sex or not). By doing this SE basically washes its hands and says "it's up to the players to decide what they want to do with the space we're giving them". This way, SE won't have to worry about any backlash for indirectly showing support for same sex unions.
Is there even a need for a marriage system?
I don't see why they wouldn't have same sex mariages if they added the system in the game.
Not sure if they would have a full blown event like XI did but who knows it's obviously in the pipeline somewhere farther down the road if it is though.
OMG ADD WEDDINGS! but DO make them expensive, WE FINALLY FOUND OUR GIL SINK FOLKS!!! WOOOT11!!!11oneeleven1!!!
*facepalm* I should have known this was a Rokien thread before opening it.
No matrimony at all, it is a stupid gimmick these days that give ppl yet another reason to harass the "supposed" opposite sex. I remember when ppl used to stage their own weddings. In any case i want that stupid marriage shit out of FFXIV. Has the be the most pointless thing on the planet; then again, you have a habit of making threads about pointless things lol
That opening thought was ... idk how to phrase it Rayna.... cuz... It goes like this:
Title >>>> posts/views >>>>> STARTED BY ROKIEN.
So ya, you definitely should have known it was a rokien thread before you opened it lmao
Pointless things really? In ffxi I always wanted to go to a wedding just to see what it was like. Shall we now define pointless for ya? Or better yet please put your definition of pointless.
I just think every here that disagreed is disagreeing because of their biased opinion towards me~
I think they are kinda quirky and hold no REAL meaning, just for fun ya know. Also who knows maybe a relationship or two can come out of it, that's worth it right there maaan! Also, I have a feeling they are going to have em, SO, I just wanna make sure the gays have a chance at it as well ya know.
There's nothing "holy" about same sex marriage. No thanks.
