Smoking emote.

Would anyone be interested in a smoking emote or am I in the minority when it comes wanting a smoking emote.

Personally, I am not a fan.... others might disagree, but it is a very unhealthy habit that I consider disgusting.... and while this is not a real world, I do think that it could be "glamorizing" it for younger players. I'm not trying to judge, I was a smoker for many years.

We have a drinking emote already, so I wouldn't see this being an issue. I wouldn't be opposed to having a smoking emote too, though I'm sure there's multiple reasons why they wouldn't add it.

I think it could be cute to have a LOTR inspired longbottom leaf emote. Not sure if anything else fits in with the fantasy world of the game.

I can see that, not a huge smoker fan IRL, but for some reason in terms of art I do tend to depict a few of my characters as smokers guess on some sub consensus level I did buy into the whole smoking is cool thing, even if I personally would never smoke.

Only when I get a fire extinguisher emote that neutralizes a smoker I target.

On a more serious level: I see no reason to promote such a nasty habit in the game.

If people want their character to be able to smoke for RP, I say let them. Not a fan of it IRL and nor does Oraina (smells bad); but let people do what they want.

On a technical level, the animation for such an emote actually already exists in the codebase; a fairly major NPC in the Stormblood storylines has and smokes a pipe. (That said, I suspect it only exists in there for the one gender/race—it's not like anyone else uses the animation—which means if they added it as an emote they'd probably have to make the appropriate variants for everyone else.)

On a social level? I'm not super fond of smoking, but I can also see the benefit for screenshot purposes and roleplayers and such.

I would be for it.

I could imagine it fitting other games but FFXIV has an overall aesthetic that's colorful and family friendly. Emotes that perform self harm on our characters would seem off.

I could see it working as a fantasy-pipe thing, but maybe not actual cigarettes or cigars. I utterly despise smoking irl as well, but we’re in a fantasy setting and we canonically have characters that smoke stuff out of pipes already (i.e. Tailfeather chocobo hunters with fogweed). I know in Japan broadcast television can’t show anyone under 18 smoking (*sideeyes JJBA on Crunchyroll censoring Jotaro’s smoking in Part 3 despite it being obvious that’s what he’s doing*) but I’m not sure it applies to videogames. And iirc, the WoL is supposed to be around 21 so it’s a moot point anyway. Probably as long as they don’t depict any kiddos doing it, they can get away with it.

/pipe sounds like a good rp emote for anyone who wants to play into a setting or be a tired old codger or wise old wizard like Gandalf.

Pipes were also used to deliver inhaled medicine anyway before the age of nebulizers, iirc, so it need not be legit tobacco or whatever.

She uses the same animation that goes back to an NPC in ARR who’s still in Rev Toll to this day. My memory is fuzzy but I think it’s been used by other NPCs as well. On top of that, there’s an ashtray with still smoking cigar and an oriental smoking set in-game that you can put in your home. Smoking is also brought up during one of the carpenter quests and you need to make said smoking set to allow tea patrons to light up.

I’m not a personal fan of smoking but I don’t see a reason why our characters can’t do it. There’s already precedence for multiple characters smoking in-game so it’s not like we’re in uncharted territory.

I don't know that SE would do it or could do it without violating rules in different countries (I don't know how different countries view that). I personally think smoking is disgusting, but I wouldn't be opposed to SE implementing it. I can see how, especially with RP, that it may fit some people's characters.

But the difference here is the same as the "teenage character" one. It's one thing for an NPC, and this case a villain, doing something within their control. But player charactes are not.

Smoking, the way a lot of people do it these days, is not very romantic or appealing.

On the other hand, I think pipes are part of the classical fantasy aesthetic. Like, if you asked me to think of a hundred things I think of when I think of fantasy, somewhere on that list is Gandalf smoking his pipe, making cute little images with the puffs of smoke. Not necessary to feel immersed, but definitely in place. I'd like an animation where we can at least hold the pipe like some NPCs do.

At least a bubble pipe could be fun.

Except for all the death, war, alcohol, drug use, the strip club in eulmore, human trafficking, child soldiers, prostitution, the npcs who can be already seen smoking.

Despite the fact we kill hundreds if not thousands of people, dance in a strip club and there's a drinking emote so eh a smoking emote would not bother me especially as Yotsuyu is seen smoking a pipe and one of the housing items you can get is an ornamental smoking pipe

You don't realize how many people smoke in MMOs until you get on voice with a good deal of 'em. Bad habit. It's true.

That said, if they wanna include an emote, I wouldn't be opposed to it.

I guess were also glamourizing the idea of going on quests and murdering gods too. Or I guess if were gonna get more down to things, there is the toast emote, along with the concept the game encourages you to take performance enhancing drugs for boss fights.

My flippant comment aside, games are not here to rear children. Thats for parents to do. And it's not glamourizing to kids. That was a bs concept from the 90s. More kids ended up getting on drugs because PSA programs like DARE and SANE than they did cause they saw a movie character once in a great while light up. The simple fact is some people smoke. In a game that does seem to on some basic level encourage our characters to be, you know, characters, allowing them to smoke would make sense since it is an in world thing IF that is in character for your character. I would be for it. More emotes for more people, even if you dont like it personally. Hell, I dont smoke personally, but I could see my character smoking socially as part of her thing.

Chances of them adding it though? Slim to none unfortunately.

lol...yeah, the game isn't what I would call family friendly in every aspect, but by MMO standards it is still pretty tame. It just has a few dark elements.

I'd like this, but I know why it wouldn't be added.

There are children that play this game after all. T for Teen, but I consider teens children. Public health and wellness is taken differently in different countries and in the States, there are anti-smoking ads everywhere from billboards to radio. Glamorizing smoking is not good, and while not the intent- it's impressionable.

Also, many NPCs aren't smoking fogweed, but Somnus since it can be taken at the pipe. You can RP your WoL doing the drugs, but Japan sure as heck isn't going to instill that.

Those are from antagonists and people you're guided to be against though. WoL isn't carrying off children to serve as Buduga soldiers.

We've had smoking NPCs since as early as ARR. Can't recall any in 1.0 but yeah we've had them forever.

I'm not an advocate of smoking, but Yotsuyu already has a smoking emote in-game already so why not?

She is an antagonist. NPCs that smoke are an example of abuse or non friendly. Yes the emote is in game, but it's like the bent over drunk emote. Just because it's there doesn't mean it's good.

Dang man, i didnt know all those npc's in tomra and the Buscaroon's Druthers and every other tavern in gane were all antagonists. You're right though, the drinking should have tipped me off. But, dang, didn't realize Kai-Shiir and all buddies were bad guys. Or that lalafell npc in Fallgourd Float. Or literally every npc in Tailfeather.

Theres plenty of things in this game that can be seen as 'unhealthy' and are part of the game. This is an arbitrary standard being applied. "This is bad because in RL, smoking is bad bad bad! Therefore we cant have smoking in video games (Unless its a villain, than its totally ok for them to smoke!)" then we turn around and have physical and psychological violence, sexual undertones, getting drugged, Using performance enhancing drugs for combat, etc etc.

Hell, I do wonder if it wasnt smoking like tobacco and it was smoking something like cannabis if there would be nearly as much push back, because lets be very real here: The lionshare of "Smoking is Bad" is aimed directly at tobacco products specifically, not cannabis. So its not smoking thats the issue in RL, its what is being smoked that raises eyebrows.

If you're an NPC who smokes, it means you're horrid or were raised bad.

Also I find it ironic that all the people I've seen outside the forums saying a smoking emote would be bad cause this game is colorful and child friendly....are the same people who used "certain" mods and want butt sliders.

I think a pipe that blows bubbles would be a good compromise for the smoking animation that people are asking for. I would love to see it implemented into the game!

Main different is, I can be sitting next to someone drinking and it won't effect my health while sitting next to a smoker does.

While I wouldn't be opposed to a smoking emote, I can personally see how smoking is seen as worse than drinking. Alcohol every so often is fine, but smoking is rarely seen as fine for your health even if done in very small amounts and infrequently.

They're referring to how it is in real life. People have gotten cancer from living with smokers or working in a place that allows smoking. And I suppose a smoke emote could be seen as endorsing such behaviour. Someone drinking next to you cannot affect your health.

That being said there is an ashtray furnishing with a lit cigar.
