Instanced Housing. We're angry!

Too many of us have FOUGHT tooth and nail to try and obtain a medium or large house for our FC because we have too many members for a small house to accomodate our needs. Every other game with GREAT housing has INSTANCED housing. We still had that neighborhood feel to it so allow me to make my argument.

1. In the last four years, even after spending every day outside of my small FC house, only THREE PEOPLE have ever walked up and said hello. Only one of which I made friends with. What neighborhood feel? Staring at someone else's ugly paissa house?

2. XIV has seen a massive influx of players making it even more difficult to obtain housing. Mateus, Balmung and similar servers are full within minutes of housing becoming available and it will be months to a year before we see a tiny amount of new wards added. There is the funding for server space with the new influx of game purchases, store purchases and new subs. Expand server space to allow for VASTLY increased wards on full servers if you refuse to implement instanced wards.

3. You can have BOTH. If you are determined to keep regular housing wards, so be it. All that we ask is that you include ONE special ward of INSTANCED housing for those of us who don't care about seeing our neighbor's yard decorations. It would allow all of those homeless FC's to obtain not only -a- house, but the SIZE Of house that their FC needs to accommodate their play styles.
3a. How would it work? You would click the Plaque and choose who's house you want to visit. (You can allow visitors, or keep your estate locked.) Once you choose the person's name, it teleports you just outside of the front gate. You can still have your yard decorations! The door, rather than being the instance, will simply swing open like any other door (Or click to open it for the front door maybe.) The only challenge I foresee with this are the private rooms but I'm sure your talented team can figure it out.

This is flat out ridiculous and unacceptable quite frankly. ShB is amazing, so amazing that perhaps it's raising our standards for the game completely. Please stop letting housing be a blight. Please let housing be ENJOYABLE for everyone instead of the select few with lightning fast internet, SSD's and lucky enough to not encounter a server error.

Just without a street to walk down and instead, just staring into an ugly abyss. Yeah, brilliant trade-off.

Just because YOU aren't mad doesn't mean people aren't angry. There's lots of people, in game, on these forums, who are right PISSED. You can white knight all that you want for 'why it can't happen' and buy some crock of an excuse but I went through Cisco, did you? There are plenty of other games who have zero issue with housing allocation for EVERYONEYou have obviously never played RIFT, EverQuest 1 or EverQuest II because people are perfectly content with their housing system. No one here is HAPPY with the housing system other than those who were fortunate enough to not get server lobby errors, who have 100 million gil to get a medium house by buying someone else's FC, or just plain got lucky enough to get a bigger house.

The people who have been trying for literal YEARS to get into a medium and still don't have one (Today, they got eaten up by individuals. Not even FC's in the first FORTY FIVE SECONDS OF LAUNCH ON BALMUNG) - Those people? We're pissed. Don't call it a feature if everyone can't enjoy it as long as they've worked for it. We can't even get lucky to find one open after a demo because of the ridiculous RNG timer. You can spam click it for 24 straight hours and still lose it to someone who had luckier timing than you.

"This other game does housing better, so there's no excuse for FFXIV to suck so bad!"

This defense is so worthless, it's laughable at how often it's brought up. You realize that, out of all those games you have suggested, none of them exist anymore? Or the fact that they're run on an entirely different engine, with entirely different parameters and data-management systems to compliment said engine? I know it's quite hard to fathom, but FFXIV is still running on it's 1.0 engine, just with a fair amount of duct-tape on it.

You like housing in those games? Go play those games then. Simple fix.

As for "just because im not mad means X", I never said the system was perfect. Infact, I am quite on-the-fence with the current system and unable to truly say it's worth the headaches it grants. But everyone continues to ignore the fact that the system was a rushed job to try and stop house-flippers and, until Shadowbringers sudden surge in player-count, it was doing its job just fine. The surge, SE couldn't truly predict and so they have to make quick temporary solutions while a rework is on the docket. Wards 19 - 21 is proof of that.

And white-knighting? For pointing out the issues in your statement? Ok then.

Your main problem was being on a crowded server and not prepping a small house in advance so you could try and relocate. You can blame individuals all you want but, its your own fault that you refuse to settle for a small.

Most FFXIV players these days know the only way to get a Medium / Large house is via relocations. Its impossible to get one waiting out timers.

I haven't personally had an issue finding the occasional Medium house to relocate into by actively searching and Behemoth used to be congested not too long ago. If you're really serious about obtaining a Medium / Large house you'll probably want to swap out of Mateus since it is a congested server. You can be on the same data centre so you can still catch up with people you know but nowadays apart from FCs and housing theres no real need to be tied to any particular server since you can world visit.

My advice is to wait for Ishgard housing. That will open up at least 21 new wards of housing which is more than we got with the combined 19-21 wards in 5.1. There will probably be a lot of people attempting to purchase into Ishgard which should free up housing in other areas which can simple be relocated into.

Why yes, I have. But most of the "complaints" fall into two or three categories.

People not reading the fine print of the patch notes and being surprised things aren't how they wanted it.

People upset that housing is for everyone, not just FCs. So they feel that personal house owners shouldn't have the option to own X because it stops them from owning X.

People stating that housing is mandatory content and complaining that they have hurt themselves for trying to get a house, despite it clear as day that it's not mandatory in any regard and they have no real ground to say SE is bad because of their obsessions.

None of these are genuine "complaints" but people screaming into the void about how the game doesn't cater to their specific needs and wants. Once again, proving that nobody truly gives any amount of a care about anyone else but themselves. Something that is rather counter to XIV's main goal of being social and to bring people together. Not put each other at a knife's edge.

There are genuinely some people on this forum that give constructive criticism and actively try to help lessen the burdens this "housing crisis" is causing, but after trying to help people and getting nothing but venom back, I've given up caring. The same old "keep trying, you'll get it eventually!" or the usual "There's communities out there to help you!" just falling on deaf ears. But let's get a few misunderstandings out of the way, since people seem adamant on spreading misinformation.

I do not agree with how Housing is. You can see how many times I've said it's lackluster and needs a fix. This doesn't mean "Any fix" is a solution, however.
I do not tell people to 'get good' in any fashion beyond telling them to keep trying, or to take a break. Once again, the above statements of 'join a community' and 'keep trying, you'll get it' falling on deaf ears.
I do indeed tell people to stop caring about housing, should their argument truly boil down to them just ranting about how they haven't got a house and it's because of X/Y/Z reasons which are just above "Other game is better at this stuff, so XIV should change to do that!" like the OP in this particular thread.

There are definitely issues that need to be resolved, there are certainly things that need to be fixed. But at the present point in time, it's up to the playerbase to actually show they want things to change and go about it in a sensible fashion. Not screaming and tearing into each other, because player A has something player B covets and refuses to do anything but scream about.

Nobody has ever said housing is mandatory content, so stop making things up.

However, we HAVE said that owning a house is mandatory to access certain content. And it is! Despite your protestations:

- Some form of housing is required to use the chocobo stables. The stables give you the option to color your chocobo, train it with krakka root/thavanairian onion, buff it with other fruits, and I think even rename it. Luckily, the average person can buy an apartment now to do these things, but it is still housing-locked content.
- Some form of interior housing is required to grow flowers which are used to make the various headpieces. Again, we have apartments for this purpose at least.
- A yard is required for all cross breeding. Without a yard, any crafter who needs crossbred items must rely on the market board. This is unusual among crafting items, as for every item I can think of off the top of my head, it's not limited by anything except the crafter's willingness to go get the item.
- A house is required for free companies to access airships and submarines, which provide useful materials used for FC crafting. It also allowed Diadem access with an undersized party, which you could not do from the Ishgard airship landing (unsure of Diadem's status at this point in time or if it'll come back like this in the future).

All the complainers (or at least most) seem to be I didn't get a large house because mr X over here got it i'm more entitled than X so don't let X have a house. These complaints will never get support as most people want to opportunity to buy a house without having to be in a fc. Locking people out of content so your social circle can have priority isn't an excuse you get all the benefits from a small than with you do with a large and there's a ton of small plots out there.

The problem isnt individuals or re-locations its simple supply and demand. There's too much demand and too little supply and its clear people don't want smalls as servers are full of them especially in the new wards. Maybe if SE make more wards and instances down the road they increase the number of larges and mediums maybe even stop making smalls to add more medium and larges.

Imagine if they make Ishgard houses and it was just mediums and larges. They could have 12 Larges per ward and the rest Mediums that would be at least 252 larges and the fc's / Individuals that still somehow don't get one can get an individual house.

So in conclusion to this rant that I wrote because this topic keeps getting bombarded in the forums rather than Bash on people who relocated such as myself request SE change the housing structure to accommodate more medium and larges. That way we dont need instance housing (which imo is a terrible idea as all social aspects of housing would be dead) and we can stop having these i'm more entitled than that person for a property because I have a FC.

I see zero issue with instanced housing. As suggested u go to the plaque to bring up a list of the plots occupants and go inside. There is little to no community/neighbourhood feel in the wards as it is. Many of the large/med plots are being kept by players who arent even actively playing. They jus dont wanna lose the house so pop in now and again. If you have 10 FC's in one large mansion plot BOY are you gonna meet a lot of new people and actually feel like you have neighbours about!
Have a random house load in on each plot to keep things looking unique.

I would still say I'm a newer player, I'm newer still to housing even. And the struggle to buy my first small plot was horrendous. I only got my first one out of sheer luck waking up early one morning. Housing is a feature I really enjoy and it's part of what made me sub and buy the game, so finding out how rare and difficult it is to buy a large plot was really disheartening for me. Now before the 5.1 maint I lucked out and found a large plot free and moved to it. Hurray for me! But I have no intention of losing that plot. It's gonna be another that's locked down for a LONG time. And it's just not nice to know that while there are so many who would like this kind of house and can afford it cannot get it.

There is no issue with instanced housing this idea that it will kill a community seems absurd to me and the only other reason against I have heard was from my FC leader, "I want people to look at our FC house and say damn I wish I had that" It's pure selfishness.

SE could monetize housing pretty well if they tried, my old guild members from another game spent A LOT of rl money on housing items. They would happily buy all that mog station furniture they wanted, then ofc be paying a sub and buying the expansions. Make a lot of items, have em be cheap enough u can buy enough for ur large plot and all those tiny purchases will add up quick across so many players. So long as they kept new furniture availible in game first then adding to mog station later I see no issue with it.

I would love to like this post for this statement, but simply I can't. This is clearly draconian architecture meant to supply an "Elite system" similar to the worlds upper 1/2%. SE had stated this several times, and doesn't want to change it. Yoshi P may have used better words, but no matter how you dress something, it is what it is.



I feel bad for the OP, I really do. They fell victim to a draconian system. I worked in title Insurance about 11 years. The i's weren't dotted, and that information is there just not recent. I wish your other half for better wellness and I hope all of us keep them in prayers on that front.



I will say though, Many people would have slammed you for attempting to succeed and announcing it ahead of time with a post early, but always ask for help ahead of time. It's easy to ignore text on a screen, and you'll be shocked at who posts to actually help.

i have a medium house in the goblet, beside me is a small cottage and its sole purpose seems to be a rental honestly, players snag it and deck it out but soon as a new ward pops that place is plot again.

there is always a small house available somewhere, just like in real life you have to start somewhere.

Except when the only small house that's available is the first one to show up in a week and has 10+ campers using bots/macros to try to obtain it~ (Hello, Hyperion!)

It's not a case of people refusing to settle, it's a case that some can't get the small that they're trying for, and have missed out on countless houses and spent hours upon hours camping for it. I wish people would stop trying to claim that players are lazy when the truth of it is that there aren't enough houses for those that want them on some servers. Jumping ship isn't always an option either - they may have well-established friend groups etc. that keep them tied to a server.
I'm saying this as someone who started with a small, and ended up with a large house for myself and for my FC. I will be the first to admit that it wasn't "hard work" that got the houses - it was an obscene amount of luck, and that's not right.

I am not sure who "we" are but I agree with the server strain and the lag. I have played both Everquest 1 and Everquest 2 for nearly 10 years, the lag of the instanced housing was horrendous. Load times were a nightmare to even zone into the instance. People could put as much junk in their instance housing as they wanted, which was a worse mistake and contributed to make housing matters even worse in EQ1 or EQ2. Players of EQ could buy as many instances they had platinum coins for and you say that they had the way of things? Pffft, please!

Let me say, I understand the frustration, I don't understand why you think you should have what you want when you want it. Many of us have been through that same frustrations when it comes to getting the proper size housing for our FC. We started out with a small. The next time wards were added we moved to a medium and then a large, so yeah we did it in stages starting in 2016. We did it legitimately, without using the loop holes and deceptive practices that some others took to obtain their house(s). "Worked for it"? "My FC worked for it", not you. You want what you want in "an instance" literally., it seems No pun intended.

You have to start at the bottom and work you're way up if you expect to get things you want. The rest is a bit of luck and fate. Getting off your high horse, would be a good beginning. Start by getting a small maybe and then you can relocate. Expecting a large with the way you're going about it, isn't going to net you one.

Actually you are right Nix. I turned it into a personal attack since OP was referencing WE so much. This however is an old argument from way back when. The old fight I fought once long ago, but only for myself with my own opinions and ideas. Never did I speak for others. It's not my right. I also know two of the four games he referenced in regards to instance housing. I know them well. Very poor examples. Plus attitude toward arguments of others has no place here if they can't keep their anger in check. Kicking and screaming never really accomplished much. Also the many lobby errors I suffered through on launch day, when Shirogane housing was added, eventually I managed to get a large for my FC (started with a small). With determination it eventually will happen, since this is how housing IS for now. OP seems to want instant everything and now in his argument, just going about it all the wrong way, over one of the oldest arguments in existence. Very tiresome.

I honestly gave up on ever trying to get a house. It triggers my anxiety too much to fight over plots in the way that we have to on Crystal. I'm over it and going to be content with my apartment until a house is actually a lot easier to obtain. Maybe in Ishgard.

You don't make 100m a month growing Thavnairian Onions from a mansion either. If you ever do get a house and want to grow them without buying any seeds off the MB, I suggest you do your research first.

You might find yourself deciding that buying the seed off the AH and growing it in a flower pot in your apartment was the better option in the first place.

@OP, gonna reply specifically to your final paragraph. I play on PS4 and had no problem getting my estate. Many others have as well. In fact, every single person in my FC is on PS4 and they have their own houses too. Stop trying to use made-up hyperboles to try and prove a point; unlike you, I won't speak for everybody, but when I read stuff like that, I will NEVER take the post or argument seriously, it's nothing more than a rant littered with personal bias.

You don't understand how this works. The reason why people are able to make that money via T.Onions is because estates are required for them AND the crops that must be intercrossed for them, thus increasing its rarity
& value. If individuals were allowed to grow T. Onions with an apartment, the price would TANK, because there would be a surplus. Supply & Demand.

He was arguing against people saying that apartments are a viable option for those who can't get a house because you can't do the same things with an apartment, such as, growing T. onions. via crossbreeding. He never said that apartments should be able to do this, just that they can't, and that's why he doesn't want to settle for one.

He expressed his point very poorly when he uses an exaggeration that can't happen. Thavnairian Onion seeds don't appear on a whim and the onions don't grow overnight.

Not to mention he's perfectly capable of growing the onions himself if he has an apartment. Growing an onion just takes the seed from the MB, a Potting Soil, a flower pot and the ability to log in for 10 consecutive days without fail to tend the plant as it grows.

What he can't do is intercross to get the seed. But if he really wants to grow the seeds himself, it would be nice for him to have the opportunity.

I just hope he understands that it takes 5 days of intercrossing to produce the seeds that then need to intercross for 7 days to produce the Onion seeds.

That those intercrosses are subject to RNG so you might get a different (and usually unwanted) seed than the one you need.

That you'll want to be using Grade 3 Thanalan topsoil or you risk getting no seeds at all (and it's still not a guarantee with the Grade 3 topsoil though I'd say it's about 90% successful).

That you have to log in daily to tend everything while it's growing. Miss logging in for a single day and you're likely to come back to dead plants.

You can shortcut the process a bit by buying the needed seeds from others but most of them are also fairly expensive on the MB because of the time needed to grow and the RNG factor of getting a different type of seed instead. And buying those things cuts into the profit margin if you're planning to grow for profit not personal/FC use.

There's a reason why so few players bother with intercross gardening even if they have a house.

That being said, he still makes a valid point - yes you CAN grow them in an apartment, but only if you acquire the seeds through other means, such as from the markets, which then drastically cuts into any profits obtained.

The argument isn't really about what you can/can't grow, the onions are just an example - but more of an argument against those who say "omg just get an apartment!" as if it's a viable substitute when it lacks the functionality of even a small personal house.

They are not going to make a new housing system without deleting the one already in game so I don't see this happening. Just like how they stopped multiple houses being owned by one player but they didnt take any houses away from people who already owned multiple plots. It's just a no go for the players who already have a house and they already have a system, they just need to keep fixing it.

True, but every time something comes up they give an excuse about how there isnt enough memory. I'm mostly saying this to people who think that they would replace housing with a new system completely, because they didnt get a house. If they did, then the other half thats happy with the system now would lash out to the change and no one again would be 100% happy.

There are many ways the system could be amended that will 1) allow those who already have their property to keep it, and 2) make it easier for people to obtain property if they wish.

If they were to add instanced housing, there's likely no way that they'd get rid of the wards - perhaps they wouldn't add more, but I don't see them scrapping the wards as they are well-established. Plus,. instanced housing could be added in a way that doesn't devalue the houses in the wards. As others have stated in the many housing threads; they'd be happy to get instanced housing added even if it were grindy/expensive as hell - perhaps even more expensive than what is already available in the wards because at least they would have a fair chance of obtaining it.

Housing doesn't have to be a one-or-the-other system; and I say this as someone who has arguably benefited more from the system than most.

Well, the general theory of restored Ishguard being instanced housing would solve the issue: everyone have have a 'lonely' house there or try their luck at one of the 'neighbours included' wards.

Instanced houses wouldn't have the need for demo, so many individuals would choose to relocate there rather than risk losing their house because they couldn't sub for a month or whatever, freeing up more spaces on the existing wards, to be used by FCs who actively need a Ward house for a workshop, or individuals who just definitively want a public house.

Gardening with crossbreeding could be done, but given it's an inhospitable environment, there's be a thematically appropriate ability to make it less likely to cross-pollinate or producee seeds and/or reduce crop yield. So yes, everyone can make T.Onions or whatever, but it'd take longer and more effort to grow there than it would in an open Ward garden. While the excessive prices would inevitably drop, that'd stop the market totally crashing, and to be honest it's already unfair that someone who lucked into getting a house can price-gouge someone who didn't so bringing the intercross market down a bit (and limit it to profiting off those who are impatient rather than just unlucky isn't a bad thing).

I'm lucky that my FC wanted a house, but I'm the only one who cares about decorating, so I effectively get as much from it as a personal house, just with added private chamber and workshop. I'm enjoying it so much I'd love to get a personal house, too, even with having the run of the estate. However, having spent so long failing to win the click-spam endurance race that is the housing purchase system for something we needed to access FC content, I cannot bring myself to buy myself a house knowing I'm depriving another FC of what we have finally gotten. Instanced housing would let me get a personal house guilt free, where I can grow stuff in the garden for me (not just T.Onions for my FC mates who refused to pay the "homeless tax" on them on the MB like I have it set up for) and do the silly decorations that they wouldn't approve of (much as they generally don't care, I was banned from moogle and choco themes outside of private chambers, much sad!).


So yeah, instanced housing as an addition would be great, and Ishguard would give a great opportunity to do it in a way that makes sense and restricts it in such a way that it doesn't undermine existing wards without it seeming arbitrary. I'll keep hoping, as I'm sure will many others who are still waiting for plots to free up.

However, we HAVE said that owning a house is mandatory to access certain content. And it is! Despite your protestations:

- Some form of housing is required to use the chocobo stables. The stables give you the option to color your chocobo, train it with krakka root/thavanairian onion, buff it with other fruits, and I think even rename it. Luckily, the average person can buy an apartment now to do these things, but it is still housing-locked content.

Apologies for the late response, but I feel it kind of needs to be said.

Nobody has ever said housing is mandatory, yet in the same post, say it's mandatory. So how am I making things up, exactly? You just contradicted yourself like a fair few others. But I'm not replying to poke holes.

Please post where any of these are deemed "mandatory" content, because I cannot seem to find anything anywhere that states you MUST feed / train your chocobo, grow flowers or do voyages. All of those are optional systems and yes, you do get rewarded for doing them. But they aren't mandatory, as you don't NEED to do them to progress to the final stages in FFXIV.

The cross-breeding is the only thing that is a system that a house grants you that an apartment doesn't. but to that end, you can also just buy the seeds off the MB, completely ignoring the cross-breeding factor and grow plants in a plant-pot in an apartment. Thus rendering the point mute. The voyages being an FC-only system. So I will concede the housing requirement for that, but still state it's not mandatory.

Nothing is forced upon the player. Infact, now with the addition of "community stables" outside of the apartment buildings, the chocobo feeding / training is a non-point. I do not reply with any hate or antagonistic intent, but more-so out of curiosity as to where this misinformation sprouted from.

Well yes, you are absolutely right, the housing is not mandatory to access the end game. But... is the end game mandatory ? Wouldn't you rather say that what is mandatory depends on one's goals in that particular game ? (And I'm not attacking you nor your answer, just some thoughts about why I / we play :).

You might argue that to access certain fights, you need to go through you MSQ and that is true. But then again, if your primary objective is not to do all the encounters, you could actually enjoy the game staying at level 50 with all your jobs if this is something that amuses you ; and never see any of the most recent stuff. Or you could do it for few months - the time you need to explore all there is up to lvl 50 (why not after all and not everybody is playing from day one) and continue with the MSQ later.

Of course, I'm exaggerating here and being demagogical but let's just for a second (and more realistically) put it all in the perspective of someone who might enjoy 4 man dungeons, maybe even the 24 man content and some more if that comes up but is not particularly looking for it (doesn't have the time, the motivation, the taste for it, what ever), who likes the leisurely part of the game - housing, glamour, side quests, maybe even RP (isn't it a mmoRPg after all ?). Couldn't the housing be then one of the main goals ? Or one of the main tools, thus as mandatory for that person as having what ever ilvl is needed to enter a dungeon for someone else ?

If you don't like the word mandatory (and indeed, I don't) may be we could talk about the "important part of the game" or about "something I enjoy". And what is important or enjoyable might be radically different from one person to another. Having a nicely decorated house could be as important fore someone as having the first kill of some terrible enemy for someone else.

And yes, housing is part of the game. Maybe a lesser part compared to the MSQ but SE is constantly working with it, adding new items every now and then, new crafts, new trophies etc. Enjoying housing is as legitimate as enjoying other parts of the game. For instance, the only reason I'm doing FATE for pixies is that butterfly on the wall, you see. It works for me, motivates me enough so I do something that I consider highly tedious. I could buy it (I think ?) from the MB but where's the fun ? There's a certain balance here. I'm prepared to make that effort. Instead, I wouldn't go to Eden savage with a pick up party to upgrade my equipment because… well because here, the fun factor is weight down by all the pain (may be bad experience :p). Others would do the opposite and this all it is about.

And still I'm not fond of the instanced housing. I do love the dimension system in RIFT but let's face it, SE would never allow us to play with all their building blocks (would he ? Maybe if it's all hidden in an instance…?). But I do think we should all have the possibility to buy a property without all the hustle. Even if it's a small one to start with. More wards, that's the only possible solution.

SE is not a newly founded start up operating from one's kitchen ! How come they don't have the means to finance it ? The actual system is a shame and well, I guess they know it by now. They should be deeply embarrassed. It is beyond my understanding how can they let it go on for years and years. Would it be technically impossible to open up new wards on the bases of need server per server for instance ? Was the last addition enough ? I doubt it but wait and see before going on with the fight for more housing !

They really need to do something to fix the issue and they need to start by making apartments a lot more viable for many in the community. They talked about small, medium and large apartments which could potentially be upgradeable back around 4.2 if I'm not mistaken and that really at the very least need to do that. The issue of outdoor gardening and airship (perhaps housing them at GC like they do Squads) also needs a solution given many want access to those features.

For some people they only want to stand in town and talk to others, the game contains nothing else. I hate to be trite but "you don't pay my subscription" might be the line here? Everybody plays the game differently, and everybody has different requirements of what they feel the game needs to have.
