I hate dungeons! They stress me out very very much. I've tried as WHM, SCH/SUM and BARD. I suspect I will never enjoy them and I'm getting so stressed when the storyline needs a dungeon. I have managed to get myself to level 53 and it's been a mix of joy and horror. I really am struggling. Do I really have to miss out on such a great story-driven game just for hating dungeons so much? I love all the pve outside dungeons and even manage the duty instances fairly well now. I love gathering and crafting. I love exploring and having a quest show me a gem I had no clue was there when I explored an area originally. I LOVE this game... all apart from dungeons!!!

Why are they stressful? The vast majority of them are pretty much faceroll, and DPS is the most stress free class in normal content. What's causing you stress?

Ask your FC to get you past those hurdles you hate. I know a couple of players in my FC feel the same when it comes to dungeons and forced participation of those dungeons in order to get certain aspects of the game unlocked that they enjoy far more.
With friends at your side, all you would need most times is to stroll along side them in a dungeon to get the clear. Afterwards you can sit back and enjoy the story afterwards. -

Forgot to thank you all for replying! I really wish there was an option to bypass the dungeons. Force me to do 10 quests instead of each dungeon and I will happily do so, even 20 quests. I love doing quests. I would happily do every single side quest in the game if it gave me to option to skip dungeons. I even considered buying the MSQ skip but it does not give you all the story in cutscenes to watch, only some bits.
At the end of ARR, between that and truly starting HW, which is where I am now, the dungeon mechanics are ramping up and I cannot remember them and it scares me and stresses me out. -

Well - there is also the option to do dungeons with your current level and not the level that the game suggests.
e.g. you could ask friends to help you with their level 80 characters.
Then you would only go next to them and enjoy the dungeon while they do the work.
They also get bonus if they help you to finish the dungeon the first time - therefor no reason to feel bad. :) -

Just one more quick thought. You only ever have to do a given dungeon/trial for story once. Until SE adds an NPC system to all of them, if you can just get through them once, the rest of the time you can play solo. And it's almost certain that all new story dungeons will let you use the Trust system, so once you catch up to that point you should be in the clear.

Buy a second monitor or tablet then watch a guide before each dungeon and write down bullet points. Read the notes before / while doing the dungeons / bosses.
You can do the same for skills. Just make a quick reference to follow.
Bad memory can be overcome with preparation. -

Fights in ffxiv are all about learning generic mechanics (like don’t stand in the fire, stack when stack markers appear, usually stand behind the boss unless you are a tank, kill adds quickly) as well as specific mechanics for fights, and then just doing your job. If you can make a genuine effort to do those things, you are doing as well or better than typical dps players on duty finder, so don’t worry if you die occasionally. Or frequently. You will get better with practice.
Also the easiest way to make dungeons easier, besides repeating them, using videos or guides, or doing ones that are lower level or ones that you already know, is to make sure that your gear is up to date. I find that I get a lot more dps commendations with better gear. I see a lot of players with bad gear, often lower level or wrong accessories, and that makes things harder. -

Try to find one or two people on level 80 to help you out and carry you through the dungeons. This should be enough to finish Stormblood and once you reach ShB you can then do the 71 dungeons with the trusts.

Honestly, dungeons are not a big deal. Generally the mechanics are simple and forgiving. Rarely should you have a dungeon that is anyhting to stress over. Especially for old content since most players will be overgeared.
I feel you just gotta run more of them and you'll realize they are nothing to stress over. -

You and my old FC leader are peas in a pod. Easiest thing to do is just focus on leveling your character. Once you hit lvl 80, you can pretty much solo anything lvl 60 and under and 2-man the lvl 70 stuff. 71+ you can do with Trusts.
Leveling is slightly harder to do if you cut out roulettes but with Palace of the Dead/Heaven on High, Squads (15-50), levemetes and Fates, its nearly soloable with Palace/Heaven being extremely forgiving, skill-wise.
For everything else, just throw up a Party Finder. Plenty of us are bored and certainly don't mind helping out, especially with the Trials. In extreme cases there's Shareplay but that should only be with people you trust. Try not to sweat it too much. Thankfully the story bits are often short. Once their done, they're done. -

It's also worth more explicitly clarifying here that the option to do dungeons without syncing your level down is called "undersized party." More importantly, as the name suggests, this allows you to do the dungeon with less than four people. So you could even go in solo to explore it (or even complete it if your level is excessive enough). And if you do find people you're comfortable doing them with, you could limit it to just you and them without having to fill out a four-person party with random others.

I just restarted and have a dread of doing the dungeons. I always avoid dungeons and pvp in every game I play. So despite getting into ARR at the beta stage and when it went to full release, when I got to the run of dungeons between level 15 and 20 I quit the game.
I would love to play this game without dungeons but know that isn't an option. Thing is I really like the rest of the game. Questing is really enjoyable and I especially enjoy the fetch quests (I know right, a lot of you will think I'm nuts for that). I also enjoy gathering and especially the crafting system.
So with a new char what would you advise as a planned gameplay to learn to tolerate or even enjoy dungeons? Thanks -

Doing them specifically with friends always helps if that's an option. A lot of the stress people experience with dungeons is centered around the people they're randomly matched with having different goals. It would help, of course, to know precisely why you "dread" them.
If you spent much time on your previous character, I'd also recommend resuming play of that and just starting a new class rather than making an entirely new character. -

Honestly? Maybe. Probably not, though; in all but the absolute worst cases you can ask some friendly people to carry you through the main story dungeons. Even if that fails, there are complete playlists of the MSQ, down to every line of dialogue if it truly comes down to it. There's no reason to be denied the story itself just because the gameplay doesn't work for you.

Terrible piece of advice: Why not just hide chat while running? Can't let any criticism get to you if you can't read it. Sure, you might end up getting kicked once or twice if things are really bad. But hey, you can just treat it as if it's like failing any solo duty.
Bottom line, nobody really cares all that much as long as you're not just leeching. Make it look like you're putting some effort in, have some reasonable understanding of your job beyond the bare basic combo, and try your best not to tunnel-vision too hard. Probably the hardest part right there, getting too focused on doing good that you don't notice the incoming bad. -

Hi Mirindi, know exactly how you feel. ShB has helped a lot with my experiences in duties because the DPS for healers is simpler now - I can focus on learning mechanics while I can still contribute some DPS - but I often experience times where I can't face dungeons at all. I'm on the same data centre as you, so my friends and I will happily jump over to Spriggan and run you through the story dungeon/trial. We are level 80 so we can do it unsync'd if that helps your stress levels!

I'm not a huge fan of dungeons either. I tend to do them mostly with my FC or my LS. I suggest leveling dps then all you have to do is follow the group and kill stuff. Just make sure to use aoe skills if there are more than 3 monsters.
