I feel bad for BLU mage and I really want to like it more. But it just feels so irrelevant all of the time. Its pure novelty and I dont feel thats a good thing.
I'd really love if the devs would take the time to reconsider the job and rework it into something useable for all content. Even if that means it stops being broken or over-powered for the content it can access. Or if it has to lose some spells/etc.
It deserves better. I know this has been brought up many times before, but please, in the future I hope you'll reconsider it and not bring out anymore limited jobs. I'd hate to see anymore jobs fall prey to the same treatment :(

Keep this thread alive and Bumped, its dauntingly long, but it predicted exactly how BLU would go down.
Honestly for BLU to be my main has been my main wish since I started playing in ARR, the fact this was thrown out to attempt to satiate people asking for BLU is kinda insulting, and the fact that Yoshi-P can only see this as the way to implement it sucks. -

This isn't an easy fix, the current idea is Solid....for a start. But then its limited afterwards. If they're absolutely against DF Blue Mage then I'd like to see Blue Mage become the solo god- in that way I could feel more use out of the job existing as limited even if I'd be sad I couldn't main it. As currently it does worse what I can already do, and is a bit more time consuming to do it too lol. But if it started getting more power and ridiculous spells like being able to molt (shed) skin such that one of those boss target mechanics hit the molt rather than the player, able to reliably X status inflict like instant kill (I'm fine with it not working on everything, but I'd like a mechanic to increase chance- like cast Faze first to greatly boost % or guaranteed but on long cooldown with no cooldown triggering if target is immune), all of that truly wild jazz, and also bundled in a more tightly bound package.. Then I think it might be fun if not a bit sad I can't main it. On people playing together I've seen some ideas that the more spells you know the more power your character has, such that you could play with friends to avoid collecting them all but you could also gather skills in an order that allows you to basically solo the entire time (by climbing the power ladder in order of difficulty to obtain).
At the moment spells feel too disconnected which imo makes it not as fun to "play" compared to other jobs. I'd also recommend avoiding naming any future limited jobs after iconic jobs that might have been envisioned DF (like puppet master or beast master), perhaps call it tamer instead- things like that. So even if it's technically a strong message to the players (if tamer exists beastmaster is probably a silent no) there isn't really lost hope or at least a ruined image of what could have been.
Although at the same time I do think there could be some fun in having advanced jobs that hold both limited and normal components, like blue mage having to go learn their DF spells but they level much faster, and they also gain access to a plethora of other non-DF spells that have some restrictions but are a bit ridiculous. Or Beast Master comes with a series of DoL like mechanics (shepherd/tamer concepts) in the wild but and they could level in a sort of DoL mode (unique to them) but also is set with a kit that works for DF.
Anyway it'll be very interesting to see what happens to blue mage in 5.1 (or whatever sub patch it comes out in of 5.1). I think we might get a sign of what's to come for Blue Mage then, like they said they're going to introduce some new mechanic(s?) and spells. Maybe this new mechanic glues blue mage's spells together to create more interesting interactions. Or something, not sure, but it'll be interesting to see- might get a hint at if they're interested in our feedback or not. -

So, you're asking to cut down Blue Mage to, what, 20 or so buttons to push at level 80, and a strict leveling order to get them, complete with a new series of job quests? And, I assume you want them to be viable in PvP, and balanced for the Duty Finder?

In an ideal world wed have limited BLU for the side content and duty BLU for endgame with both sharing the same base. Optimal BLU at level 50 only uses less that 15 skills anyway. Blu from FFXI worked fine, though more effort would need to be put towards balance considering the roller coaster it was. I know they don't want to risk Blu entering dungeons with a bad skill set but you can make a baseline skill set through job quests even if Blu requires more than others, then have flavor abilities through learning them in the wild. -

I think they should keep BLU as a special case, but make it an "advanced job" instead of a limited job.
Require that certain extra conditions are met before allowing advanced jobs to enter duty finder. Must've learned X spells, must set spells to Y amount of slots.
Market advanced jobs as jobs that require some extra effort to play, for dedicated players. They'd barely even need to change BLU's mechanics apart from that, it's not like it's overpowered anyway. -

My usually unpopular idea is work it as a Healer. It already gets a bunch of heals and shields and some minor dps. Plus I honestly think some of the self-sacrificing heals and skills could be a cool mechanic to be used in clutch situations
But yeah they’d definitely need to take away the boss abilities BLU gets cuz why do we get those anyway? -

What I'm more curious is SE's insistence that it must hold the gimmick job aesthetic via the amount of spells it can learn and fear that it might be pressured into forcefully learn some skills to be viable.
As if SE didn't force both of those things onto the playerbase already. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news SE but all the years of putting BLU in all those games, your playerbase managed to trim all the useless ones all the time and kept the good ones. The only reason we went out of our way to collect those spells is for the completion, not to toy around using a less powerful version of mighty guard against some endgame maps/bosses for the lulz. That's number one. Number two, if you want to avoid the "forced learning" aspect, it's simple: you resolve issue number one by trimming the excess and making the useful skills learned in the same way a regular job is.
This might be the first time I found myself actually wishing SE had never developed BLU. I would've taken pokemon style BST mini game over this. At least it would've made more sense. -

Before the current iteration of the job came out, I suggested tiering blue magic into "lesser" spells learned from common mobs (with a system that required the player to kill specific mobs to learn their respective abilities) and "greater" spells that come from iconic FF monsters (Bad Breath, Grand Delta, etc) that have to be learned during the job quests (each quest that rewards a monster ability would involve said iconic monster). Systems would be designed around those two tiers of magic. Back then and today I still think that would have been a good compromise between learning spells on the field and the structure of classes in this game.
I was thus surprised to see that SE put the gimmick above everything else and implement BLU as a side activity. Given the current design, the best one can hope for is to decide on a set of spells that are allowed in duties, and disable everything else while in dungeons/raids. The problems with that, however, are that this is not easily justified with lore (something SE seems to really care about), and the job is still devoid of gameplay systems beyond spamming one spell. -

I feel like they could just make you have to "unlock" BLU as a normal class by simply learning all of the abilities that could be considered essential to maximizing its potential and disabling/nerfing abilities that would be OP in current content.
Aside from the instakills/percentage HP damage, the only things that are particularly overpowered for on-level content are Self-Destruct/Final Sting (These deal more damage then a LB 1 when fully buffed up with Moon Flute, Bristle, etc), Eerie Light (30% magic vuln is a bit excessive, but 5-10% would be more reasonable), White Wind (The healing potential of the move is leaps and bounds past what actual healers can put out at the same level even if you're at 50% HP), and Bad Breath (It's essentially Reprisal but with no cooldown and a longer duration if you exclude the other resistable status effects it induces).
