I've seen it a few times now from interviews with Yoshida, and it could just be a joke he likes but it seems more recent to reference (or perhaps I only noticed it now), but he keeps mentioning things like maybe FFXIV might need another dalamud, summoning the meteor again, Hydaelyn Kick, and I feel a few times more but can't recall enough to reference.. but if someone knows cool lol.
Do you think he's slyly hinting at a huge event to come? Or just a use of language that's fun because eh why not?
I can recall at least three occurrences, although I can only find the source on two.. yay me .. lol. The one I can't find if I recall correctly was about needing another realm reborn to modify some of the early experiences (cataclysm).
Another being a recent interview where he talked about wanting to make the servers all connected (shown desire) but that they might need a Hydaelyn kick to get there. Obviously could just be "so much work we're going to need a god", but I felt at least because of past references it might also be a sly foreshadowing (like "we really want to do this but it's going to take a while... you'll have your servers joined when Hydaelyn does a universe bending super kick, cataclysm 6.0/7.0 look forward to it").
The third clear one I can recall is from a french interview where asked how he plans on topping 5.0, and he's like "maybe I'll drop another meteor" lol.
I feel like there are more than that but those are the three that have stuck out more clearly to me, and sort of relate to concepts that might request a cataclysm (huge changes, vs like more clear joke responses).
I'll admit I might have some bias because 1.0 Dalamud in the sky was so cool. Not saying SE took it from Majora's mask or that Majora's mask is the first for doomsday in the sky but both those game's experiences were really fun. That looming.. hanging by a thread dread is a unique feeling. Also looks cool.
Just curious if anyone else feels there is a slow growing shadow on the horizon, years off maybe but lurching forward still. Or counter point that it's just a joke :P.
Also if anyone can help me recall more examples that'd be fabulous ;).

Don't plan on responding to every it's a joke comments since I'm not sure I can add much but it's not because I think it's wrong lol, I even added it's a reasonable option in the OP. I believe it has merit, just not sure that it's the only truth (as I'll try to expand on sometimes if I can).
Personally I was suggesting 6.0 / 7.0 due to that reason (in OP I say 6.0 / 7.0). I doubt they'd drop a dalamud mid expansion, that sounds like work taken to the extreme. Though I could easily see them attempting something like that for another expansion (easily in that I can see it happening, not that it's actually an easy task to do).Quote:

Moogles not working on the server when the server down is clearly a joke because that's all it can be lol, "we've added more moogles to ffxiv" doesn't fix the servers (I think... :p).

The jokes you list can only be jokes meanwhile a calamity can actually not be, is what I'm saying I guess. There is potential features in a calamity that makes it potentially more than a joke. -

I think the game would improve if it moved from the source to a world more like the First but without the light having wiped out 90%...
But I can’t think if a good way to do this...
I like that the first feels more like a fantasy world:- No magitek. It is just too all over the place on the source
- No beast tribes. The races are not split into a “these guys are lessors” division. Races that on the source are “beast” in the first are just “that guy over there who runs the shop”.
- The new races are better mixed in
- The ancients are not sci-fi high tech, but actually ancient less advanced but still deeply mysterious
- The lore is just... better... it doesn’t feel patched together as a means to repair a broken game. It feels like a whole piece.
So I want some calamity that resets things and puts us on a first-like world. From interviews we know Yoshi probably also wants this. But I see no good path to get there...
Rather I fear ShB will go down as FFXIV’s worst expac because from here on out we will be running around instanced versions of Garlemad and Damascia (Or whatever Fran’s home was called) that resemble what we got for Ala Migo...
Right now 5.0 was amazing... but it also seems to have concluded the First... and it looks like 5.x is the Xenos expansion... No Calamity, no fully rich zones... just choppy plot wrapups...
Might have to drop a moon on that to get 6.0 out the door... -

Mostly I was thinking Majora mask first because dalamud in the sky reminded me a lot of the moon in Majora mask, the imagery was similar while that's not as much for FF7.
You don't really look at the sky in FF7 (top down view). Meanwhile the calamity of FFXIV and Majora Mask felt more similar, that moon present in the sky coming down at you (over a period of time vs cutscene).

Plus Yoshida has said a few times he's impressed with Blizzard and WoW, I suppose it wouldn't be that weird for him to see what does and doesn't work with that sort of concept and maybe produce a SE/FF variant of the Cataclysm with their own ideas and inspirations. It would be perfect for players to be able to use new game plus before introducing something like that, a huge problem with cataclysm was losing so much content and worse still if done in FF where MSQ is pretty meaty (don't want to loose all that meat to nothing).
I'm not sure, and it moves into a bit of conspiracy type thought, but at the same time if you laid out what's been said and done into like a puzzle, I feel Calamity could fit without too much effort XD.

FFXIV now is successful and making bank, that and the games original coding is already being pushed to the max. Between those two I doubt SE would do another calamity. The only way I could see one happening is when the games story is completely done and the game goes into perma-maintenance mode as a means to get players to move to the next FF MMO.Quote:

Reflect aren't fragment in the way Norvandt is a continent from the same original planet, they are if I get it right aetherical aspected copies of the same world. Ascians seems to make the element aspect of each reflect overflow to the point of no return until it devour everything else for it to go back in its original recipient when the trigger is pulled on the source by a "world ending event" shaking it. The black rose probably is the trigger for the first reflect to be merged.
I think the separation of the original world work a bit like color spectrum :
We had the white light and Hydaelyn separated them like a prism would do and Ascian want to add color after color to the husk until it goes back to pure white. -

ARR could use another rebirth, would be a good way to fix it. However, I doubt the devs would actually put that much effort into it. If anything it would just be what a new expansion could be about, and it would effect lands previously untraveled. Either that or window dressing.

I think he's just joking around for the most part about what it actually will be, but it's an idea. We'll probably be getting hints of something big that will be focused on mainly in 5.2 and go headstrong into 5.3 (Like the battle with Niddhog/Tsukuyomi as our story trial fight will be there). Then we'll probably focus on the upcoming Garlean Civil War that's been sowing it's seeds really since 4.2 which will be the focus of 5.4.-5.5
My guess is our next expac will be focused on heading to Garlemalde and from there we're going to have a big "Oh shit" moment. Shadowbringers gave us ours but there's still plenty more then they can do, especially bringing the Garleans back to light and Black Rose being such a crucial aspect to that storyline. -

I think it's inevitable we'll be threatened with another Calamity for the grand conclusion to the story, to raise the stakes and give us something urgent to be working against, but I don't know whether they'd go through with it. More likely that we'd successfully prevent it at the climax.

Not to mention Eden's whole plot kind of becomes moot if the First is rejoined. You gotta admit though, it'd be really bold (and have a lot of bad consequences if done wrong) move to destroy the player's ability to go to a zone entirely.
I guess worst case it could be handwaved as, post Calamity our visiting the first is in the same capacity we go back to Sastasha: a contained time bubble / memory visitation type thing.
Killing so many characters we've grown to know and love... Wicked White it'd be like losing dozens of Haurchefants at once. -

Considering the amount of DEV effort a redesign of the World (quests etc) would require and how they harp on and on being constrained by manpower when designing the gear in 3D I seriously doubt they have the necessary punch to pull off a calamity in a believable, not half assed way.
Also, keep in mind that after such a calamity the world would require years to rebuild to a point at which we would have functioning cities/infrastructure etc. -

In a game where we cant even have male stubble because its too complicated or too much work, such a calamity scale like event would mean that they have to redesign every map on Eorzea again while keeping it normal for everyone that is not at that point of the story. Which feels like way too much work for a game that already got done twice. Maybe we get something in a part that we have not seen before thus we will visit destroyed new parts of Hydealyn but I also find that hard to believe. (And it would mean that we just lost another shard with billions of lifeforms on it)
I just think and hope that its just a joke. -

I really hope they don't throw yet another great big "calamity" on us... It's getting old at this rate.
* Meteor project takes place, calls down Dalamud and Bahamut to cause the Seventh Umbral Calamity.
* Mister "Sloppeh" calls for a primal that could rival the power of Bahamut in an attempt to create yet another calamity but is averted by Papalymo's sacrifice.
* Our dear Minfillia heads to the First to prevent the Flood from destroying the world but we're later tasked with traveling there to avert yet a third calamity, the Eigth Umbral Calamity, from coming to pass.
* Meanwhile on the Source the Black Rose is still very much a thing that could cause a calamity anyway.
And that's not counting other near events that could have ended in some form of a calamity. Preventing Bahamut's resurrection in the Burning Coil, stopping the Illuminati from harnessing the power of Alexander, and while I haven't done it pretty sure Omega was going to wipe the world out should the Warrior of Light fail to win. While I totally understand the need to have some grave threat to the world the player must overcome (It's a staple of just about any RPG out there after all.) the calamity card has been played a little too much for my liking. Yes I know that's the intent of the Ascians, but I'm hoping they focus on something else next expansion other than yet another calamity threatening to eradicate all life.
Let us work on defeating the Garlean Empire once and for all or somehow turning them into an ally in the ultimate fight against the remaining Ascian(s). There's already been evidence that there are those within the empire trying to fight back, I say let us work together with those forces to "liberate" Illsabard from Ascian influence. -
