Six-Sided Tornado Star - The 5.0 Monk TK Rotation

So I've been playing lvl 80 monk for a while and it did not disappoint! It got some major buffs to it's old moves and it's newer ones make the TK rotation even better! That said, a majority of the community seems to not understand how to make the most of the post 70 moves, so I made a guide on how I go about the 5.0 monk TK rotation.

Admittedly, given how much of the community believes the TK rotation is dead religiously, I expect a lot of backlash for this rotation/openers. At the very least, please give it a read to see the method to my madness before calling me crazy. I'd rather people read it and shoot me down afterwards than ignore it outright. Plus, some of the tips I include benefit even a non-TK rotation.

After talking with someone on the specific numbers of the non-TK rotation, along with gaining a better understanding of how damage buffs stack and TK's true potency (it's actually 430 as it does more damage than 6SS at GL3), I've edited the guide and adjusted the openers/rotations.

The short version is that the 5.0 TK rotation is a lot more of a high risk, high reward rotation due to potency buffs of all the GCDs (particularly Leaden Bootshine, which is guaranteed to crit most of the time), and the lack of the 10% debuff from DK (granted I still loved its current effect a lot more).

In the end, whichever play style you go with is simply a matter of preference.

After thinking on a bit more, I've come up with a priority list on when to use RoF/BH in the rotation depending on certain circumstances (PB or Anatman are up at the end of RoF duration, LF is up as RoF comes off CD, and both). I've also included a 6th usage of 6SS, along with more grammar tweaks to other parts of the guide, as well as better organization of the ToC.

And I'll be honest, after seeing them I would advise against this kind of rotation and wouldn't recommend it to players as it's just a huge loss of dps from the standard rotation of not using TK or 6SS except when necessary. I don't want to go over your logs and I appreciate the effort you put into making the rotation, but despite the guide, the DPS it puts out is within thousands lower than what should be expected in a fight from a MNK.

To give a comparison however, in your deathless Titania ex fight, you did roughly 9.1k using your rotation, whereas Monk in full i430 gear should have been able to do around 10.5k~ So while you may think it's high risk high reward, it comes across as high risk and no reward.

Funny story, I was at first going to include my logs, but then decided against it because I felt it'd hurt my credibility. Thing is, I hadn't actually perfected the rotation and were using those runs to do so. The first edits of the guide were after someone had given me numbers on a simulation, one that removed all variables like crit and dh (excluding bootshine) and after tweaking it slightly during the conversation, listing what all the GCDs would be up until the first 4m and 20secs, the fall-off damage became the same with the main difference being the opener, which is why I concluded that it was high risk, high reward rotation. Even after that, I managed to tweak it even further to squeeze out every bit of damage possible, which resulted in discovering the new All-Rounder opener (and replacing the old opener I used when listing GCDs in the simulation).

In the end, however, I won't deny that until I go back into Titania and Innocence using the rotation I've written down, or unless more people with high parses pop up who actually try it out themselves, it does lack the credibility to make people take it seriously. All I can say is to try it at your leisure if spamming the usual 1-2-3 rotation starts to get dull.

I had to change of main to healer, otherwise I would have tried it.

Just updated sections 3.3 regarding the Perfect Balance rotation, as well as the Openers section.

Essentially, whichever opener and Perfect Balance rotation you decide to use comes down to whether you have a NIN in the group or not (and if your group decides to use 4th/5th GCD openers or 7th/8th GCD openers depending on the fight/preference). If you do, go for the rotation that gets out more LF crit-Boots back to back as you should at least get both of those in at minimum under the TA window. If not, go for the TK rotations (if you're so inclined), as every other raid buff in the game lasts at least 15 seconds, so you'll be able to fit almost everything in those windows.

For the opener section, I've readjusted the Shoe-Shiner opener and have removed the Balance opener (the opener floating around the Balance discord and everywhere else), and all other references to the Balance Discord and "The Art of Not TK-ing" guide entirely (unless you count the change log in the beginning). When I first wrote this, I made mentions of them in general as an "if all else fails, go with this opener which I got from here" option, but I honestly don't think that opener is good solely due to the Anatman usage in the beginning (which is the only major difference from the Shoe-Shiner opener, along with Pot and oGCD timings, plus 6SS at the end). I've seen people mention using an ACT trigger to time it properly (which does nothing for PS4 users like myself) but think it's completely unnecessary so long as you use Anatman following 6SS at the beginning. You'll always get at least 1 stack of GL no matter what (unless you use Anatman too late), all without clipping the next DK (on one rare instance I actually manage to get two GL stacks before the CD ended).

SE made the skill gap a lot smaller with Leaden Fist Bootshine, which I don't mind but at the very least I'd like them to implement the change to Meditation I mention in this thread in 5.5. It will give 6SS more obvious usage and bump up the optimality of the TK rotation solely because you're likely to get more chakra stacks with all the 6SS uses (at least that's my prediction).

Just updated the 5.0 TK Rotation guide again. Made some adjustments to the openers and edited several sections. Here are the main changes:

1. Only use the 6SS+TK combo at the end of RoF or when under at least 3 raid buffs.
2. In the 6SS+Anatman combo, only use it to gain one GL stack (standing still hurts)
3. Always have a Shoulder Tackle charge available. If RoF has less than 10 seconds left on its CD, then hold ST, even if it caps at 2 charges.
4. PB has two rotation: GL stack recovery and Double Boot. For the latter, always keep three things in mind:
-You should at least get 2 LF crit-boots before and/or after you pop PB.
-You always need to use a GL refresh (Snap/Demo).
-You should end the PB window with DK somewhere so that the next Boot gets the LF buff.

That's pretty much it for this series of edits. Definitely expecting to make more if monk goes through any changes when patch 5.05 drops. Until then I guess.

Doesn't change the fact that your openers are just not good. The guide itself has a lot of even basic information wrong *cough*GLGives10%DamageIncreasePerStackNot5%*cough*.
This is not a good guide. This is misleading at best for those that actually want to pick up the job and this was probably not even peer reviewed in the slightest. They would've said the same things I'm saying. Thank you for the effort but you're just not there yet.

With the release of 5.05, after messing with monk and clearing a couple of Savage fights, I've made edits to the 5.0 TK Rotation guide. There are quite a few edits here and there, but they can be summed up as thus:

-There are 4 openers and 2 re-openers listed, each with an added explanation as to how they work and what works best depending on party comp.
-RoF and BH timings have changed. You want to pop the former after Twin/TS or Snap/Demo and you want to pop the latter after DK/Boot or Twin/TS a full cycle after RoF.
-Now that Savage is out and I'm taking content seriously, I've added my fflogs to the guide (even though people could look them up on their own). I'm not the best monk and things don't always go how I want them to (I mess up my rotation, I miss pot windows, lack of fight optimization, fight mechanic RNG, etc), but I at least want people to take a look and see how the rotation fairs in end-game content now that I've optimized it to this extent.

On a final note, as it seems there aren't any guides on extended openers that would work for the Neck Breaker and Break Dancer openers, I'll be taking some time to make another list of the openers for the rest of the classes. Look forward to some it! XD

Made some changes to the PB rotation section. Basically, it's ok to come out of PB without LF and just do two DKs for the next two cycles as the crit-LF Boot hits really hard. I've really been underestimating this when in reality, for a monk GCD, it hits like a truck. Also changed up the Shoe Shiner Opener, swapping the pot/tincture and FC and adjusting it so that there are 2 LF Boots within the the PB window.

Just made a complete overhaul of the TK guide, now renamed the 5.0 TK Burst Guide. Made a ToC for easier navigation, along with less text explanations (I think) and more visual explanations. Also included some notes based on my experiences from E1S through E4S.

Believe it or not, doing that is actually something I picked up today from the optimization guide that you can find on the Balance Discord. Basically, because you exit PB formless, your LF Boot won't be a guaranteed crit, which you want it to be at all times as the damage from that move is no joke. In terms of immediate damage, one crit-LF Boot does more damage than any combination of the other regular GCDs at a minimum crit multiplier value of 1.5 alone. And because crit increases in damage the more you have, using a crit-LF Boot is almost like using a Demo with all of it's DoT ticks applied at once. Most likely, it's the singular move that currently makes monks so powerful.

I have to ask.

Clearly, you are aware of the Balance and the number-crunching they do over there, plus the vet players who create the guides are regularly amongst world first raiders with 100 percentile logs. You absolutely have a right to play how you'd like to play with your own rotation, opener and such. But don't you think it's irresponsible posting your ideas as a "guide" when there are clearly better rotations available from people who parse much higher than yourself? Surely, as someone who'd want to mentor new players, you'd point them in the direction where the most widely crowdsourced and up to date information is, backed up by players who can demonstrate their optimizations with their own numbers?

I don't play MNK, so this is coming from an outside perspective when I say this. First off, I get where you're coming from, and I understand it. Secondly, I get where OP is coming from, and I understand it. The optimal thing isn't always the fun thing, and skills exist to be used, so you can't blame people for wanting to use them. Furthermore, plenty of things were considered consensus over the history of mankind. Many of them were wrong but that didn't stop a lot of people from agreeing with them. Not to say that OP is right and that the Balance folks are wrong, just that the argument of "lots of people agree with this" is not an argument. The data helps of course, but part any statistical or scientific analysis is to not discount possibility, and that means exploring every avenue. Theory is great but it's just theory. If someone doesn't go through and try this sort of thing out then no one will ever know the truth of it's efficacy. Even if all it does is prove the "null" hypothesis (that is to say, the standard MNK rotation is the best) then that's valuable in and of itself simply for the boundary that's been established via the conceptual exploration.

I agree with you that optimal doesn't always equal fun. Monk is a weird class where SE seem to implement actions that they don't intend Monks to use. Heavensward was full of theory crafters trying to make a Tornado kick rotation work and that didn't happen until unintentional changes in Stormblood. Anatman is not used at all for it's intended purpose, they nullified that with form shift changes. Six sided star is another frustrating skill that as a gcd, you'd think it would be part of the rotation. Instead, its Tornado Kick 2.0. Monk has had the same core rotation for 6 years now since 2.0 with only off gcds added so I get this, I get wanting to make something else work, I really do.

But it doesn't work like that :/

My problem is the advertisement of these ideas as a "guide". "The Monk 5.0 Rotation" specifically. If you want to play your own rotation, by all means, do it. But don't present it to the community as a finished product for those looking to refine their rotation or better themselves as players when this rotation is utterly sub optimal as demonstrated by hard numbers.

Which is why you'd go true strike dragon kick instead of double dragon kick.Double dragonkick is never a dps gain.There is absolutly no benefit to double dragon kick in your rotation.Please do some proper research before posting these guides.This is basic monk stuff.

This is pretty much the reason why I went through all of this trouble. I didn’t know using TK in the regular rotation was a thing until 4.5 and even when I did, because it went against everything I knew about MNK to that point, I adamantly dismissed it. However, once I realized that it actually was optimal to use, it reinvigorated the class for me and became a lot more fun to play and optimize (as well as making me more open to experimentation). It’s hard for me to want to go back to using 2.0 monk after that. Even if using the TK Burst turns out to be less optimal, knowing why and what gains you can get from it despite that is worth going through all of this experimentation and documentation.

The main issue I have with the Balance and it’s optimization guide is that it specifically advertises a playstyle that requires a third party program and low ping, and it’s literally the only guide in the entire Balance the does this. As someone who plays on the PS4 and has moderate ping (low enough that I can still decently double weave on other classes), this is akin to saying “LoL, sucks for you.” The fact that it also requires a specific sks tier and doesn’t provide any means to adjust for this also comes off as inflexible imo. Not only does the current BiS have higher sks than what’s considered optimal, it’s only going to get higher in future patches.

Honestly, I’m more bother by the fact that the Balance completely disregards using 6SS for anything other than disconnects, even though it has its uses outside of the TK Burst. I also believe that there is no point in double weaving for fast classes like MNK, NIN, and SAM. For example, take the Shoe Shiner opener, which is nearly identical to the Double Twin opener. According to the Optimization guide on the Balance, aside from requiring Triggernometry, it gives a “possible” method of fitting the final LF Boot within RoF. On the other hand, with the Shoe Shiner Opener, that same LF Boot is guaranteed regardless of your sks, plus you gain an extra use of Shoulder Tackle. The most ironic part about this is that using the 6SS/Anatman, probably the core of the entire guide, was something I picked up on the Balance Discord.

The Optimization Guide also downplays the other uses as being sub-optimal, which I find odd. For one, it suggests that using two DKs in a row is more preferred over using 6SS. While the possibility of earning two crits for more Chakra procs is a valid point, it’s very unlikely that this will happen consistently. What’s more, two DKs only equals 400 potency total if you hit both positionals, so if you can’t or don’t for some reason, it then becomes a dps loss. For the 6 Opo-Opo PB, which again, assumes that you’ll always hit 6 GCDs, it states that using 6SS after PB is a dps loss, which again is odd since you wouldn’t be able to use 6 Opo-Opo moves unless you use RoE or Anatman (while the former is actually a decent argument, there’s no guarantee that raid or player specific damage will occur during every PB window. And of course the latter requires Triggernometry, which doesn’t help PS4 players).

I’m not sure if I’ve said this before on the OF, but quite frankly, I never expected to get into theory crafting and guide making for FF14. Not only am I not, but never have been, the best MNK, I didn’t even realize that lining up raid buffs was a thing until 4.4. So as depreciating as it sounds, I’m really just some upstart rando. But when the only way to Optimized MNK requires third party programs and the best connection possible while downplaying the rest of the class’ new toolkit without even explaining why, I feel the need to do something about it. Had I not been in the overwhelming minority of people who thought using 6SS and TK regularly was worth it, it probably wouldn’t have taken me two and a half months to get to this point (and I most likely wouldn’t be the one writing the guide).

You're very much underestimating how hard a guaranteed crit LF Boot regularly hits for, which is a mistake I made not too long ago. And as I said, that piece of advice was something I picked up from the Optimization Guide on the Balance Discord, which most people use, so I figured it'd be a valid argument, even though the TK guide goes against a lot of points it makes.

You don't need a third party program, to optimize MNK, it just makes your life easier. You can manage all of those things on your own. And what you can't will be very small DPS losses if you screw up, where here you pumping out between 5-10% less DPS. Which is quite significant. Skill need to be adjusted, and if people complain I'm sure it will get adjusted, kinda like SAMs lvl80 skill. Although, since they are moving towards simplifying everything I doubt they would intentionally add anything like SB TK use.

I'm interested in where those number came from in order to make that claim. That said, whether you have a third party program as a visual aid or not, the issue with using Anatman between two regular GCDs in order to build GL is that it's a lot less consistent and is likely to cause you to clip GCDs, on top of the missed auto-attack(s). When using Anatman right after 6SS, along with the extra damage to balance out missing an auto attack, you're almost always guaranteed to gain one stack of GL, regardless of server tick (although there are rare cases of having to wait a fraction of a second into the next GCD to build a GL stack. There are also cases where you'll gain two GL stacks within 6SS's CD, though you should avoid intentionally doing this). I will admit, however, that using a third party program would indeed come in handy during PB windows in order to avoid using a Coeurl stance GCD and just spamming DK and Boot.

The only thing I can think of that could lower the skill needed to use Anatman mid-rotation (other than using it after 6SS) is if it gave you a GL stack as soon as you use it. While that alone would make the TK Burst slightly more powerful, if it ends up keeping it's original function of gaining a GL stack after 3 seconds or server tick, then that's make the TK Burst and every opener in the guide much more powerful as you'd be able to reach GL3 in about 6-8 seconds using a 6SS/Anatman combo and GL4 in about 10-12secs.

The second DK is basically filler. Just something to use so you won't waste a guaranteed crit LF Boot since you come out of PB formless.

Ok, let's do a bit of math here. If you do a True Strike, then a DK, you'll have to do another DK in the following rotation in order to get the LF buff (because PB leaves you formless when it's done). So it looks like this:

TS (240) + DK (200) + DK (200 = 640 total potency

If you use Boot right after DK, followed by another DK in the next rotation, because the LF Boot doesn't have the guaranteed crit effect, it looks like this:

DK (200) + LF Boot (300) + DK (200) = 700 total potency

If you do two DKs in a row, followed by a crit LF Boot in the next rotation, with a base crit multiplier of 1.5, it looks like this:

DK (200) + DK (200) + Crit LF Boot (300 X 1.5 = 450) = 850 total potency (and that's the minimum amount as Crit scales higher the more of it you have).

In short, it's an overall dps increase to do a second DK if the last GCD of PB was also a DK.

Basic math aside, there is, believe it or not, a more optimal method of making use of PB after the TK Burst that I've come to realize after taking a bit more time to contemplate it. I've updated the TK Burst Guide with this (as well as an extra use for 6SS regarding limit breaks), but basically what happens is this:

-The Demo placement during RoF becomes the same as it normally is without PB (before the second Boot)
-PB gets used after the third DK, making the subsequent PB rotation Snap -> Demo -> Boot -> DK -> Boot, followed by DK, an optional 6SS/Anatman combo, and finally Demo again.
-Twin ends up falling off after the fourth DK, but the Crit LF Boot should make up for this.

DK (200) + DK (200) + Crit LF Boot (300 X 1.5 = 450) = 850 total potency (and that's the minimum amount as Crit scales higher the more of it you have).

In short, it's an overall dps increase to do a second DK if the last GCD of PB was also a DK.

A minor update to the TK Burst Guide. The FoF placement in both the TK Burst and TK Burst Opener has been adjusted to bring more damage out of the last remaining GCDs, however it can still be adjusted to fit TK within the RoF window.

Neither is right or wrong and both are completely dependent on the encounter time and whether an extra leaden is gained prior to the boss dying. The SAFEST option is to DK twice. One at the end of PB to gain LF and one formless to not waste the potential non-crit, losing a potential 150 potency. As said though, the whole thing depends on the encounter and whether you gain an extra leaden or not.

Just did a quick update. The "Fight Tips" section has been removed. While it's easy to optimize and perfect a rotation on a striking dummy, fight optimization is another story and I don't feel that I'm really qualified to give fight advice as I haven't optimized each encounter in 5.0. ^^;

Some adjustments have been made after doing some potency comparisons between the openers I've listed in the TK guide with the Balance opener (particularly with the PB burst opener). Also made some adjustments to the non-TK burst rotation when PB is up at the end and you're able to fit in 6 GCDs in it's window (basically do a Snap at the end).

I swear, I'm gonna have a helluva time with these if 5.1 brings some monk changes, specifically with Anatman. ^^;
