Derplander adventures

Hey, all!

Been trying to work this out on my own but I think it's time I ask the lore masters of the XIV world about it.

What jobs does the Derplander use in 1.0? And in what order? I doubt the devs even thought about it much back when the game was being made, but I was just wondering because in the Shadowbringers trailer we see him as an archer from 1.0, and so that got me thinking because we clearly see a large sword in one shot on the trailer.

What job in that? Gladiator? But, there's no shield and the sword is massive to boot. And I know dark knight wasn't a job back then.

And then some people have said that he was never an archer, because he only saw through another archer's eyes POV style, but this was spoken about years ago as not being the case.

I also think that the massive sword is just too big for a gladiator and that it was simply put in a standard default weapon for the trailer and doesn't actually belong to any job in 1.0.

In my head I have archer > warrior > dragoon > monk > samurai > dark knight. But I can see gladiator being taken out as it's very sketchy. I like to think he started as an archer and that's why an archer was shown in the Shb trailer before warrior. Would be super simple to just say that and get it out of my head. But, what do the experts say about all this?

Obviously I'm overthinking it all but it's fun to try and work out a timeline of jobs for him, even if there isn't an official one pre 1.0.

Well, the thing about 1.0 (and 1.0's opening movie only reflected that) was that many things shown in it, never ended up actually being inplemented into the game itself. The large sword Derplander was shown strapped to his back in the prototype Drowning Wench (before his Echo trip to the Battle of Silvertear Skies) seems to reflect that. However, numerous propaganda artwork for 1.0 (one such image was even also used for the US 1.0 game cover) shows Derplander clearly wielding a normal sword single handed, all but confirming his original class is GLA.

And for what it's worth, although the classes of his elezen and miqo'te pals in the Adventurer's Guild is unclear, in the Echo scene it's easy to see the classes of the party he joins who fight that malboro (the roe is a MRD, the elezen a GLA, and the lalafell a THM - based on the wand she has - and remember, this is the original 1.0 Armoury System being depicted here - any class could equip any ability freely, thus the odd casting of Protect by a THM or a GLA using Esuna was actually justified. Incidentally Derplander's 'Enfire' arrow was actually a planned spell for 1.0 which alas, was never implemented in the game itself (although the scene was also meant to depict the long scrapped 'Battle Regimine' system that 1.0 had at the start).

Either way, he really started as a GLA (with a shortcut into ARC within his Echo trip), then went MRD upgrading to WAR, then LNC-DRG, PGL-MNK and then SAM and finally DRK.

For what it's worth, back then, the "gladiator" class covered every bladed (but not every edged) weapon, including daggers, so GLA is a very safe bet.

theres also the classes that never made it into the game back then like the class they eluded to that could use every wep in the game.

Wow, thanks for this. Looks like he really did start as a tank, which now makes sense seeing as the elezen sitting at the table with him is called a bard by the miqo'te, so Derplander being an archer wouldn't make much sense for party composition-wise.

Though, that does bring up another question I didn't think about until now... Why do they have 2 (MRD and GLA) tanks in the echo scene? Was party composition different back in 1.0? And even in the Battle of Carteneau's CG movie, we see Derplander as a warrior and his friend as a paladin. And there's 5 in a party! Same with the Warrior's of Darkness for that matter!

Looks like it was original concept of gladiator, before sentinel got mixed in with it. That pose looks odd though, iike....where is that hand at? Oh I see it now, hes like. "stop right there, ima get scooby on this monster thing"

Well, it was going to be a tank... damage... ish... thing.

Class design in 1.0.0, circa September 30th, 2010, was godsdamned wild. You had near total freedom to cross-class, and by the Light and Darkness you were going to use it.

As one little clarification (for my own knowledge as much as anything), though, I thought it had long been confirmed that the lalafell was originally intended to be a CNJ, and that En[element] was going to be a keystone of CNJ before being cut? I'm happily open to correction, but I remember it being discussed ages ago.

Well, if she was meant to be a CNJ, then SE Visual Works messed up (as usual), as she was clearly equipped with a THM weapon in that scene (a metal single handed rod, not a wooden branch staff). Again this was the original version of the Armoury System being depicted in that scene though, where you could equip abilities freely irrespective of class (hence why she could use Protect as THM, and why the elezen GLA could use Esuna to heal the roegadyn MRD's poison). Or why the lalafell could also cast Blizzard for that matter, as Blizzard at that stage was a CNJ spell (1.0 THM was all about using Astral and Umbral spells like Dia and Drain to inflict negative status on enemies or drain HP to heal).

Either way, as I mentioned much of what was shown in it never actually made it into the game anyway due to changes Tanaka made at the eleventh hour (the Drowning Wench was completely altered for starters to how it was depicted there - the aetheryte was moved to somewhere else in 1.0 and was not in the centre of the Adventurer's Guild as shown in that scene), and besides, such discrepencies can easily be handwaved away anyway by simply saying "It was all an Echo scene based on someone's memory and memories are imperfect after all".

Or maybe I'm just overthinking things again. :P

Was he really an archer though? I didn't think the Echo worked like that. We never actually see him as an archer outside of the Echo vision.

Drplander was an Archer in the 1.0 cutscene. We see him with a bow both before and after the Echo vision.

Not when he's in the Adventurer's Guild though - he had a sword on his backpack when he leaves right at the end, but he's not equipped with any weapon at all inside the Drowning Wench (and he's also wearing a completely different outfit to the harness he appeared in when he went off on his little Echo jaunt - in the Drowning Wench he's wearing a stylized tabard).

So it's unclear what class he is in the Adventurer's Guild, although GLA is as a good a suggestion as any (he's probably not ARC as when he falls down into the water and notices the bow the look on his face is surprise, showing that he wasn't actually that class to that point. It was meant to show the Armoury System at work where you could equip a class at any time).

And interestingly enough if you map out the classes/jobs you get this nice little pattern with the original job requirements...

Gladiator
Marauder > Warrior (GLD lvl 15 needed- check)
Lancer > Dragoon (MRD lvl 15 needed- check)
Puglilst > Monk (LNC lvl 15 needed - check)
Samurai
Dark Knight

It's almost like they planned out his first set of jobs because surely it's not a coincidence that the secondary classes needed at level 15 just so happened to be his last class. And you can see why archer sticks out again here being the odd one out.

I'd just add that Visual Works need to work far in advance of the release, so things will always change that cannot then be reworked for the cutscene. See: Miqo'te's eye's in 1.0 opening, Hraesvelgr attaching the Steps of Faith in 3.0 opening. Development will always take precedence over the CGI, so inconsistencies are basically inevitable.

Clearly he took Archer to cross-class Raging Strikes.

Saying that though, I would still say he picked up archer before warrior seeing as the Shadowbringers trailer has him switching between all his jobs in order. Even though he was a gladiator to start with, it seems SE either doesn't see it that way or just plain forgot. Or just didn't want to add more jobs to animate. Or adding archer to the trailer was just a nice little callback for 1.0 fans.

Someone should message SE's official XIV lore master and ask for an official timeline of jobs!
