Just thought it might help when a server gets DDOS'd by giving a sort of reward to players to promote some of them to stop trying to log in over and over (in effect players become part of the attack).
Now I don't have a networking background so perhaps players barely make up part of the attack and its not worth it to SE to lower the power of the DDOS but also I think it could help players who are able to take a break but not sure to feel better about doing so (now they'd take a break because they can, and feel better doing so).
For those wondering why I say players can help lower the power in that if X is the number of bots attacking the server (very quickly), then Y players get disconnected an now Y - Z players are actively pinging the server in order to relogin joining X pinging the server (making the DDOS larger, even if X are doing it much faster). Z being the amount of players that decide to give up / take a break.
So now if the server gets struck like it is now when a player get's disconnected the server will inform the player there is an attack (or other wording saying the server is being heated into a melted flan), it will allow them to attempt to login or accept a reward to wait a bit. Even if this idea isn't used I still think the launcher could use with a notice that the server is being attacked (or just way too full lol), just to help players understand what is going on.
If you choose to wait you'll have a short timer on login before you can login again, that timer will be removed entirely if the server melting ends sooner than the timer itself ends (so you can rejoin as soon as it's declared better, even if you have time left). If the timer ends earlier you still get to keep your reward. Ideally the launcher updates itself every now and then so players can just look at the launcher (without trying to login) to see if the dust has settled.
I think the timer could start out small and grow as you reattempt, both for the server's sake and player sanity.
Say:
- 1st reward - 15 minute timer - 10 free teleport tickets, 15 glamour prisms
- 2nd reward - 30 minute timer - 5 more ticket/prisms, 25% rested exp bar (will go over limit if already capped)
- 3rd reward - 2 hours - 5 more ticket/prisms/retainer tokens, 25k mpg, 25% more rested exp
These rewards are just random concepts, obviously can be whatever.
Perhaps the timers could be slightly offest too to encourage when people come back that they log back in at slightly different times (your timer is 15:30, mine is 15:45, another is 15:05).
Just a thought, may help the servers or may not help them at all - I'm unsure if the scale of players trying to login is anywhere near the power of the DDOSer's (like if it's 1% then it wont help, but if more then it could). Also of course it can help encourage people to take a break :).
This system can be used whenever servers go down unexpectedly, not just for DDOS of course. So if a server just crashed for whatever reason players can be encouraged to take a break.

The system intention was to encourage you to not to.. and the reward isn't big enough that you'd want to ddos the server just to get the reward (like if you put a relic in there then yeah they would). -

While I'm sure the people trying to get back in aren't helping matters, I think you're underestimating the sheer scale of the traffic a DDOS sends by at least a couple orders of magnitude. The players' traffic is likely little more than a drop in the bucket and largely irrelevant in comparison to the botnet's traffic.

Mostly I just wanted to see a system that encouraged people to take it easy when everything is up in flames. Go eat, sleep, family, whatever, don't worry and come back later.
Of course I don't want to see more attacks lol; though, I find it hard to believe more would come of it but I also don't know the people who do this sort of stuff - I guess it's possible they'd think they're hilarious for making it rain tickets. If it increases attacks then it definitely shouldn't be done, but if that's true then people bewilder me lol. -

The ddos wasn't even our fault. Or SE's... It was a random group ddosing a. Group of lines that happen to host ffxiv servers along with many many other places.
Also, you say people wouldn't ddos just to get rewards and your crazy to think that. A few years ago a group of people ddosed a bunch of servers(cod/destiny/battlefield/steam/etc) for no reason besides the fact that they thought it was funny to mess with gamers. (look up lizard squad) if you throw in rewards for it it'll happen way more often. -

Yeah no. The servers were only funky for like 2 hours. This is an amazing reward in itself over two years ago. No rewards for downtime that's a free to play thing that should be delt away with cause let's be real people will play anyway.

It downright sucks that this happens but why make them have to incentivize players to be patient? As mentioned players spamming back in is a drop in the bucket compared to what a DDoS attack entails. I don't know all the details about what a DDoS attack makes up but my understanding is that those responsible spam the servers with information on a large scale continuously far beyond what the server can handle. If a player gets disconnected and cannot get back online they'll usually give up after a period of time, unless they're that stubborn. And even then being rewarded for waiting until it clears up probably wouldn't be enough of an incentive for them not to keep trying anyway. Best course of action is to just step back and go find something else to do. Find a better use of your time than having to type out your information each time it fails.

If the downtime is caused by internal SE (like maybe some SE employees "accidentally" cut all the server wire caused server down) i agree the player should incentivized.
But if the cause is external, they should not.
the reason is simple, because it's own player could do that.
Imagine this example: some player will ddos just because he cannot play at the time (weekdays at work for example) for the rewards. This player thinks it wouldn't affect his playtime at all, afterall when he comeback from works, he could just deactivate the ddos machine, the game become playable again, and he get rewards for ddos-ing the server.
Now Imagine that example happen all around the globe, with different players in different time zones, suddenly we got near zero uptime.
Maybe this is a bit extreme, but when i remember how many so called "hacker" cracking website just for bragging and "lol i hack this", i could see this will happen eventually when they implement this ddos-reward system. -

If you want to be compensated, then go after the fools who are instituting the DDOS attacks.
SE is already suffering far greater financial harm trying to fight off those attacks than you are by losing out on your 15 cents of game time. -

Bit sad many people are assuming the worst, I didn't make some big speech on players deserving compensation - in fact the reward required you to take a break. The whole point was to get players to stop stressing at the start screen and to just go take a break.
I'm fine with people thinking it'll cause more problems than help, but please stop assuming the worst about me and assuming I'm demanding SE refund me my 15 cents or whatever (not everyone has done so, but a few have and it's a bit disheartening). I'm aware it's not SE's fault and I don't hold anything against SE for people attacking them, and I don't think SE needs to bend over for rare abnormalities (DDOS being one that is not even being their fault). I was only trying to smooth an experience out by encouraging people to take a step away when the servers were under attack or some weird server crashing bug (and I can see many people think it would just end up making worse- so I'm totally fine that the concept dies too, which surely making it worse would be reason not to implement something lol).
