It was a poor decision. It's broken the game for many people, and even after you fix that issue, it's very rude to those of us with high refresh rate screens.

100% agree. The game ran better than any other MMO I've seen at 144Hz, now it's capped to an ancient-era framerate, and nothing is as silky smooth as it once was.
Someone said they locked it due to bots using framerate with their tools.
Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.
We apologize for the inconvenience the framerate cap has caused. With the recent update, the FPS limit has been capped at 90FPS, as mentioned in the patch notes. However, I will be collecting and forwarding your feedback. I recommend checking the lodestone for any future updates in case this cap limit is increased once more.

Thank you for visiting the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.
Thank you! I look forward to the fix as I am currently unable to play without reverting to DX9.
Please change it back SE... please...:(
Can't believe that alongside an expansion SE includes an fps cap that is completely ruins the experience.
If people were exploiting it, target them. Don't ruin everyones experience to accommodate for the few.
Absolutely disgusting response. This is completely unacceptable especially in this current year.
No point in getting a 144hz monitor before expansion. Thanks
well if your monitor has a forced 144hz you can not play at all. So those of us with 144hz laptops are completely screwed.
I recognize and can respect that SE was attempting to mitigate exploits, but I have never heard of the exploits that they are attempting to prevent. A large number of people play with high refresh rates these days.
SQEnix, if history must be unwritten, then let it be unwritten: this tragedy must be undone!
I have now cancelled my subscription and will not be buying Shadowbringers until this is fixed.

Final Fantasy XIV was the only online game I've played that actually runs at high frame rates like a modern game should, and I refuse to play it at 90fps. My 240hz monitor is unable to display refresh rates bellow ~165hz well, causing severe pixel inversion, making the experience not enjoyable. I will be watching for patch notes which state that this cap has been removed.
This is so true. I'd rather play the game with the occasional exploiter as that at least doesn't impact me directly. Me being unable to play the game on my laptop is a far worse situation to be in.
If this isn't sorted by the end of early access I'll just jump ship to WoW 8.2 where I can actually log in...
The game is literally unplayable with G-Sync monitors with the FPS Cap... The Cap implementation is also so poor (fluctuates between 80-100FPS on Panel) that I get tearing on both of my G-Sync monitors. Also causes more input lag due to worse frametimes. Please Undo this Cap Square Enix.
Meanwhile some are glad managing 40 fps at most when being alone xD
I gotta say it sucks but if they have a good reason id understand... i rather wonder how that screens cant run on lower fps, i mean wtf just trash all stuf from pre 2018 or smt? Dam i was lucky with mine lol
It's not about FPS directly, but about refresh rate, and specifically how SE (poorly) implemented their FPS cap.
In many cases laptop panels only support one refresh rate, unlike desktops which you may possibly plug any type of monitor into. So, the option to adjust the refresh rate is not available to us in the laptop software.
While it does not cause me any problems, there needs to be some sort of compromise with SE here, because if this is rendering people problems, people are just going to walk. This is not a "oh I hate content and/or changes" it is having a negative impact on other player's gameplay.
I'm also a G-sync user, the frame rate is capped at a pretty consistent 90FPS for me but I can't get G-sync or V-sync to enable as a result of the changes (using in game settings and Nvidia inspector). This has resulted in micro stutter and tearing when before the patch the game ran perfectly smooth. Here's my specs:
Gtx 1080 TI, I7-8700k stock, and 35" 3440 x 1440 monitor with a VRR of 48-100hz. I also had to remove my side panels because my video card is running 20 degrees hotter with the same utilization. Has anyone else noticed similar issues?
G-sync user here. My monitor is a 2560x1440p 144hz TN panel. My build itself is running a I7-4790k@4.5ghz and a RTX 2080. I haven’t noticed any issues with screen-tearing, pixel inversion or micro-stuttering. I use MSI afterburner and RTSS to lock my frame rate at 85 FPS. Which is what I currently have the monitor itself set to display as it’s one of the display options available to me in the nvidia control panel. I am using the 1/1 option for the in game frame limiter as well so the game itself respects the global 85 FPS cap. Hopefully this helps folks in here having issues with the new in game frame limiter.
Yup, mine is forced at 144Hz. I've tried the half-dozen fixes people have posted that have worked for them to no avail. Now I can't play the game except on DX9. I invested in a very expensive laptop 2 weeks before the expansion came out only to not be able to use it all for the game. I'm extremely upset.
I am happy with the new FPS cap. With unlimited, it effected other apps not running correctly such as video stuttering in a browser. I play at 1080p on a 60Hz monitor. Maybe they can keep the 90 limit as well as a 144 limit in future?
G-Sync is now working thanks to Nvidia Inspector. Pretty sad that we have to go through 3rd party apps (Such as Nvidia Inspector or Afterburner/RTSS) to get the game to function properly. I doubt it's the 10FPS loss but the game still doesn't seem as smooth as before and my video card is running 20 degrees hotter than pre-patch, with the same utilization.
*Edit*
The G-Sync on indicator is now turning on thanks to third party software, however it is clearly not working. I'm still getting the same micro stutter and tearing as before. I can change the refresh rate, problem is I can't break the hard cap of 90FPS nor can I get G-sync to enable. I'm going to try abandoning G-Sync and enabling 60 FPS V-sync when I log on later today.
Did you try turning off free-sync / G-sync. That may enable you to change to fresh rate.
You could already cap your FPS to whatever value you liked before this change. The 90fps hard cap is a slap in the face to people with faster monitors. It's not 2014 anymore - high refresh rate panels aren't niche, exotic tech. Lots of people have them.
Just adding my voice to this as well. I am not really hindered by the FPS cap but my hardware is capable of reaching higher than 90 FPS so I would like to. Please remove the FPS cap.
Yes, remove this asinine cap. Its ridiculous to think this is a decent solution to anything.
I join the forums to see if Square Enix is able to uncap the fps. I have a 144hz monitor and sadly since early access. I've been suffering from motion sickness. I wasn't sure what was causing it until my friend told me about the limited frame rate. I know it has affected me before with games like far cry and nier automata on pc.
Apart from the very good early access. :D
hmmm ill have to check that didn't know they limited the frame rate wasn't looking at the number but I did notice my cards were running hotter then normal. I have a 120fps 144hz monitor. Dual 1080ti (Preditor Monitor)
Yes this needs to go.
After fighting with the game just to get it to launch using DX11, my fps doesn't seem to be capped? I can still get like 110+ sometimes. :confused:
Square Enix... why... why would you do this. Please reconsider this FPS cap. I use a 240hz monitor and with this fps cap I'm getting some of the worst screen tearing and stuttering I've ever seen in a game. Please find another solution to whatever reason you decided to cap fps..
Would preffer to get back real unlimited FPS. I'm using a 144hz screen and screen tearing is soooooooo bad. D:
This is a big mistake on Square Enix's part. Locking me and every other player out of high refresh rates is wrong and needs to be reverted asap.
Whatever your reasons for this were, it's not worth it. Find other ways to punish certain exploits if blocking them was your goal.
To expand a bit on how poor the idea is, and even worse how poorly it's been implemented (keep in mind I play on a 144hz monitor):You need to revert this ASAP. this isn't the year 2000 to implement such terrible ideas and code. This is embarassing and something I'd expect of FFXIV 1.0, not 5.0.
- Locking my game to 36fps actually locks it to 7fps (I wish I was joking, edited to add a pic as proof: https://i.imgur.com/hieCK66.jpg);
- Locking my game to 72fps actually locks it to 10fps;
- Locking my game to 144fps actually locks it to 90fps as intended, yet sometimes it goes down to a 60fps lock;
- I can't remember if I had it set to "up to 144fps" or "maximum (90fps)" but one of them introduced terrible screen tearing, completely ignored by Freesync;
- On top of all this, the game suffers from poor frametimes and/or microstuttering, as seen by myself and other players I've spoken with.
On another note, 3rd party fixes exist, yet I refuse to use something that is possibly against the ToS, to fix an honestly dumb mistake on SE's part. Meanwhile I know people using these fixes and playing the game at 144fps. Is this what you wanted? I sincerely doubt it.
Don't make players resort to grey area measures to play the game how it should be played.
Thanks for listening.
I too support reverting this change. I'm just coming back to the game, but I can recall that FFXIV ran very well at 2560x1440 on my 144hz FreeSync 2 monitor (even with an Nvidia card, for now!). To see 60hz and 90 FPS being capped is very disappointing. Please revert this change ASAP!@
I wholeheartedly agree. I'm personally not impacted by this change - I run a pair of 60hz 1440p monitors - but there are a lot of people who are. There's a lot of hyperbole floating around about the subject, but regardless of why someone is impacted or whether they're exaggerating their argument, SE needs to remember that these are paying customers who want to play FFXIV in a certain way. It's SE's job to do everything in their power to support that, which certainly implies they shouldn't actively sabotage things like framerate. What's next, limiting resolution? Removing higher detail settings?
Revert this change. It's not worth it.
In another thread, I read a translated response from the devs. They do plan to revert this change.
Square-Enix: Thank you! I do hope you are able to solve the clipping issue in the future without framerate caps.
Please hurry with the emergency patch. My wife and I would like to enjoy Shadowbringers together, but I am unable to play on my laptop until this is resolved. =)
