Yep, sadly, tanking pets got the axe.
It gives you some kind of barrier now I think... Maybe? I hope? I really don't know
It's specifically been named a "support" pet instead since it comes with a defensive cooldown.
The summoner tanking pet never actually served the purpose of tanking, though - except for very few niche instances like job-quests. Other than that it has never been effectively used and was only called by inexperienced, leveling summoners and annoyed the hell out of the tank in question.
The tank-egi will now fill the role of a support-summon and maybe will actually be of some use in day-to-day life.
And effectively nothing was lost, because the Topaz Carbuncle and Titan-Egi haven't been effective tanks since 2.2 or 2.3. Pet actions are listed at the bottom of the page. Titan finally has some use again.
Titan-egi has been a running gag for years anyway.
Seems he's got a 20% of hp barrier when you use egi assault 1, which has 2 charges on a 30s recast.
Tanking pet was not axed, it's just no longer a Tank in the traditional sense. It casts a barrier spell to protect it's master, and for Titan specifically it drops a molten circle at the caster's feet to damage enemies.
https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/jobguide/summoner/ Has the new abilities for SMN and Egis...
Titan-Egi can give the SMN a shield for 20% of their max HP.
With the changes to how pets work, SMN is getting rather large changes.
It's not just group content. Titan's enmity doesn't scale at all, so by the time you reach the mid-50s at the latest, he can't hold mobs off of you. It only gets worse as you level further, get more burst damage, and then summoning Demi-Bahamut causes his aggro to reset completely.
Hopefully physick got buffed and isn't worthless to make up for losing him
Doubt it, but would be nice
rip chicken nugget
I prefer the new titan egi personally.
It all falls on the chocobo now. Titan is useless.
Quality time with the striking dummy coming up!
I never used Titan to tank lol but I'm sorry if some of you guys are upset about it.
If BLM is able to solo overworld mobs and solo quest, so is a SMN without a pet tank. If you're struggling without it you're doing something wrong. Titan never had a reliable enough enmity generation and damage mitigation to make it a viable option to replace a tank in any situation where it would matter aside from the very first dungeons if your tank d/ced or that one time on Ramuh where Titan was immune to the TB stacks and could tank the old man as long as people kept their enmity in check, but that was patched relatively quickly.
If you're on the overworld you can use your chocobo if you need a tank and solo instances can be cleared the same way any other dps class manage it without a pet tank. At least now there might be some times where you'll be able to use Titan in endgame to mitigate some boss ultimate moves in raid.
Even using both Diversion and Lucid, Titan was never able to hold hate even to the lowest level FATE mobs - the chocobo is a far more reliant tank than the nugget, so good riddance I say.
I don't disagree with this line of reasoning, and yeah, it almost seems like that's the direction this is meant to push SMN. But. It also causes me to wonder if this could be the first steps towards removing the heal/raise abilities from SMN. You'll no longer be able to justify a piddly Physick for keeping your pet alive. Raise may be harder to remove, due to synced down SCH.
Unfortunately, with RDM sharing that utility (and doing it better), it does also seem like it'd be unfair to remove that functionality from SMN.
Also reading the job guide, I guess Everlasting Flight puts that concern to rest. Extra healing utility there.
While I'm there, Emerald also brings up some worries for me. Spells are all AoE. I can see it already, fresh Arcanists catching aggro off of mobs they didn't intend.
The carbuncle is a glamour but when I read the the new updates on SMN pets it looks like if I use the carbuncle glamour then my pet will do less damage. I guess I'll know when I play but I was just curious.
My point was: how many jobquests with an instances in which you can and want to tank something with Titan-Egi instead of killing it faster (or the damn thing just not having an aggrotable) are/were there - and how many dungeons, raids, trials etc. are you doing, in which you dont want to use Titan-Egi?
While I agree that job-quests are an important part of not only playing your job (please do them, folks) and the game, in total gametime they still some short compared to dungeons (unless someone only levels their summoner through hunt-marks, I guess...)
For everyone who used their Egi for tanking mobs in the open world: you still have a real chicken to do that for you.
